Is this book being published by the OPEC? Seriously, could sombody explain please this price- this is not the way to stimulate the economy.

One thousand, nine hundred and ninety-five dollars for a 100 page paper back book? I bet they are just flying out of the store.

A very readable book; ideal for learning elementary electronics either in school or on one's own. This is a text for use in the first course of an Electronics Technician program. It is well-written and has very few errors. Hazen succeeds in making things understandable on an intuitive level (where other authors, e.g. Floyd, seem to assume a year of college physics for the background understanding of more abstract concepts). The pub date of 1990 should not put you off, because the fundamentals really have not changed. What has changed in books which have gone through more regular updating are the graphics, which are fancier, and the prices, which are proportionately higher (funny how the same hard to follow explanations are repeated from edition to edition by other authors -- a weakness not improved by pretty graphics). This book also comes in at just under 650 total pages (supplementary material and index are paginated seperately) where a competing book weighs (heavily) in at 1008 total. Which one would you rather carry around for a year? Few 2 year tech programs will use all of the material in the 1kp volume. This book can help open the doors to something more advanced, such as the excellent _The Art of Electronics_ by Horowitz and Hill.

Fundamentals of DC and AC Circuits - Hazen has done it again with a winning book targeted exactly right for the Vocational and Technical School markets. This book is the very definition of adjectives such as readable, understandable, practical, applied, and complete. Many students say this is one of the few textbooks they were able to read and actually understand. All parts of the book and available ancillaries were written by Hazen, providing the all-important continuity that students need and expect. This is a definite buy for anyone wanting to learn about electricity, either on their own or in a formal classroom

This is an excellent book on all properties of semiconductors -electronic structure , phonons , transport and optics . It primarilyfocusses on bulk properties ,but extremely succinct and relevant comments on hetersotructures can also be found interspersed throughout .

Many books on semiconductor physics err on the side of breadth at the expense of depth . I found this book to be a pleasant exception . I believe this leaves other similar books like Physics of Semiconductors and their Heterostructures by J.Singh far behind .

Cardona (of course) is at his best when discussing otical properties , especially optical diagnostic methods . I have not seen a similar book at this level which gives the same level of description of light-matter interaction in semiconductors.

I recommend it highly to all fellow graduate students .

Measuring voltage impulses of 1 million volts or higher is a tricky and complicated business. Frank Creed, who for most of his career, worked at the Canadian National Research Council, developed the techniques and equipments used for these measurements. This book is the only one in english which covers the complete field. It is a primer which can be used by engineeers in the field and which not only shows the theory and flow charts but also the actual equipment and processes.

Creed has spent his life at the National Research Council in Canada working with high voltages. This is the book to have if you need to know about this.

First I quite agree with the reviewer jnhrtmn... , so I won't repeat what he said. Physics in universities seems to be taught with little real reference to the history-- as if quantum mechanics and relativity sprung brilliantly out of someone's mind fresh out of the twentieth century. This book shows the importance of history in the development of physics-- and anyone seriously studying physics should read this book, to see how much the ideas of physics have evolved and been influenced by the past. Much of it requires a good math background--a knowledge of calculus is needed for much of it. It is sad that it is out of print--a publisher needs to make this available.

I am an amateur physicist that thinks modern physics is more of a belief system than a science. This book is the most objective account of why science is where it is today. It is raw and readable. It leads you through the evidence as it happened. Hundreds of references. Meaty stuff, not just fluff for a book. You want insight into science you never had before, this book is a very good step.

This book is an excellent starting point in the study of modern power electronics. It will definitely give you a solid foundation of the subject. It covers all types of power conversion with an emphasis on pulse width modulation (PWM). However, the reader should have some background in calculus and circuit analysis to fully appreciate the topics of discussion. Understanding the design issues in the field of power electronics will be so much easier after going through this book.

This book introduces the often esoteric subject of power electronic conversion via a sensible and simple generic switching converter and goes on to include a very comprehensive coverage of modern conversion circuit topologies and modern devices. This book does not 'tangent' off into extraneous detail which is the quagmire which bogs students down in this subject, but maintains a very equitable intellectual level throughout. Inclusion of numerous SPICE files of typical power conversion circuits is also particularly valuable. Most students nowadays accept SPICE for modelling low power electronic circuitry so why not power electronic circuitry also.

This book will be valuable to all with an interest in power electronics but especially to undergraduates, as it is one of the least intimidating texts I have ever encountered in the interesting but 'oft' shied clear of' subject of power electronics.

I read this book in 1977 following the publishing of it. I have just reread it in 1999 and it is more pertinent today with the sealed office buildings that people work in daily. This subject needs modern attention by medical people.

I loved this book as this book is with facts collected from author's experience. Many hidden treasures of nature can be analysed using his findings. Many solutions can be found for many medical problems.

I have searched for quite some time for a good thourough text on transformers that would take me past the 2 chapter simplified presentation in most machines textbooks. This book covers all aspects of transformer design (with lots of great photos) and operation in detail. ;--)
