The experiments are written in a clear way so every reader might understand them; it is a useful text for science fairs projects, and an electric and magnetism demonstrations guide, also. It may be recommended for 6-12 students and teachers, but is a useful tool for parents, too.

This book should be read by everyone. It describes, in a lucid, clear, and level-headed style, the discoveries made by inventors and engineers over the years, in their quests to find a free and non-polluting source of energy, and why their inventions are still not out on the market. It makes for very sobering, not to say chilling and even frightening, reading. Infuriating is another word that comes to mind. In his foreword to the book, none other than Sir Arthur C. Clarke describes this as, "almost certainly the biggest scandal in the history of science."
This is not a "conspiracy theory" book. It does not describe grand conspiracies and cover-ups (although it does touch on those subjects). Tutt simply lays out the facts as they are, gathered from news stories, interviews, and the personal writings of the people involved (from both the pro and con camps). It is clear that with adequate funding and support, a source of limitless energy would be within our grasp in a matter of years. Yet very little funding is forthcoming, continued ridicule abounds, and our tortured world is still subjected to a year-by-year massive increase in pollution caused by the burning of primitive stone age fossil fuels. Not to mention the continued dependence of the Western world on the oil supplied by the fundamentalist Arab world.
There is no organized conspiracy, I certainly hope, but there is a "momentum" against change, and what is desperately needed is a paradigm shift. People with vested interests, and people whose livelihood and careers depend on the continued use of our primitive and backward energy technologies, are, independently of each other, actively working against the new technologies, and collectively they form a massive resistance that does indeed look like a great conspiracy. And in the scientific establishment we have all the "experts," whose careers and reputations depend on the continued discrediting of cold fusion and all other alternative free energy sources. The result is the world as we see it today, with its massive pollution and energy problems.
For those with no technical background, this book is heavy going at times. There is a lot of technical detail, and Tutt relies heavily, at times, on extracts from other sources, which interrupts the flow of the narrative. But the stories told are, nevertheless, interesting ones. Here is the original "mad scientist," Nikola Tesla, and his several free energy devices. Here is also the Radiant Energy Device of T. Henry Moray, and the tragic story of his futile struggle to find acceptance for his technology. Here is the mysterious N-Machine, and the Thesta-Distatica, developed by a sect of Christian fanatics somewhere up in the Swiss Alps. Here is the very tragic story of how the promise of cold fusion was destroyed, as Tutt delves into all the popular misconceptions about this important technology. And here is the story of Randell Mills and his BlackLight technology, currently in development. Tutt also describes some of the free energy scams that are continually being pulled by various con artists who usually claim that God has given them the technology, with the predictable result that long lines of evangelical Christians immediately form up to give the "inventor" their money.
I give this book the rating 4 out of 5 only because, as I said, it is not an easy read for those who are technically challenged. But the book is more than well worth reading. People with closed minds will no doubt scorn and deride, as such people always do, but for intelligent and open-minded individuals, this book gives an important insight into what is really going on in the field of free energy development. Highly recommended.

GaAs and InGaAs compounds are already widely used in many commercial applications that take advantage of the ability to make solid state lasers and light emitting diodes out of them. But if it is possible to make these smaller and cheaper, then the economics may enable even more applications.

Hence the practical emphasis of this book. Though, of course, it is meant for the researcher.

The self assembling property offers a glittering [pun] chance to make cheaper devices. Hopefully, this might eliminate a few lithographic steps and hence help push up device yield. Plus, of course, the small size of the dots leads to novel quantum effects. For example, if the current thresholds could be lowered due to this, it might reduce power consumption, which is no bad thing.

While the book is presented mostly at the research level, you should expect, since the authors are from a company, Fujitsu, with large interests in this topic, that not all the experimental steps might be fully described. The science is. But, for proprietary reasons, experimental steps which cannot be patented might be not disclosed, and held as trade secrets. Which actually is not too different from papers written by university researchers, anyway.

Brings together under one cover a diverse compendium of physical, electronic, magneto-optical and other properties of the most common semiconductor materials, including of course silicon and gallium arsenide.

There is also data on less frequently used compounds, like other 3-5 and 2-6 materials. Typically, these might be more of interest to a physicist or chemist than to an engineer, as these are more research oriented.

Various semiconductor devices are also described, like tunnel diodes and Zener diodes. Here, perhaps, this book faces more competition from other books that are explicitly on semiconductor devices. In this book, the descriptions are mostly just that, descriptions. Whereas other semiconductor texts would give lengthier, explanatory passages.

The book claims to describe the transitioning from Si to GaAs in MOSFET manufacturing. A bit of a stretch. Yes, GaAs is heavier used in certain, high speed devices. But the vast majority of MOSFETS are still Si based, and there is no indication of that changing.

In summary, the book is more of a reference than a text. Its best value is in the gathering of the material properties and the references therein to the original papers from which these are collated.

A well written book on semiconductor optics.
A good supplement to Klingshirn's Semiconductor Optics.

Excellent treatment of bipolar junction transistor (BJT) physics in a very tutorial, readable style. Covers many topics in a lucid, intuitive and insightful manner, such as space-charge limited currents, surface recombination velocity, and ohmic contacts, where the discussions are a large cut above other introductory texts. Also covers MOSFETs and PN junctions, but nothing unusual here. There is little information on heterojunctions, optical and microwave devices. Overall, it is the "light" version of an earlier work "Transistors" by Warner and Grung, Wiley, 1983.

Jorg Schlaig, professor at the University of Stuttgart and one of the initial developers of the solar chimney concept, is the author of this concise introduction to solar chimney technology. The work, originally produced in German, is an attractive and well presented argument for an energy source that is non-poluting and inexhaustable, and may solve many of our current energy problems. The ideas and concepts are explained in such a way that both lay person and expert may benefit of the many years of practical and theoretical work on which the book is based.Copiously provided with statistical and financial data, the book is a must-read for energy professionals, decisionmakers and politicians everywhere.

This book is one of the best I have read on the subject of photovoltaic (PV) systems. It has a good balance between all areas of PV system design. Most books with this level of technical content are too skewed toward semiconductor physics and neglect system-level issues. This one covers everything from PV devices (solar cells) to power converters to batteries to system design, and includes useful sections on justification for PV, system application examples, and environmental impacts. The organization and flow are clear and logical. The only problems are some unclear typesetting, exclusion of background on some key equations (references to the literature are included, though), and a little bit of non-standard notation (i.e. G is used for irradiation, not irradiance). Summary: I highly recommend this book for technically literate readers interested in PV systems.

This book addresses those who are active in the field of power plant engineering and operations. Thus, it a assumes basic knowledge of power plant operation and jumps directly into discussions of instrumentation & control of the machinery, as well as instrumentation-based online diagnostics. These discussions are pointed specifically at applications of the Siemens'steam turbine product line. This level of specificity is just the ticket to provide a very tangible "how to" application, as opposed to a general theoretical discussion. I am an engineer and you have to "show me" so that I can use the information. That, this book does. The only fault I note is the lack of block diagrams to elucidate the control schemes that are described in the text (being a visual sort, myself).
