how electricity works
I teach 4th grade and found this book very good at explaining what electricity is and how it is generated. There are not experiments crowding each page, just clear electron models that clearly explain electricity theory.

Electricity, Fluid Power, and Mechanical Systems for Industr
Kissell's experience and knowledge are well documented by thisbook.

The key strength of this book is the compact yet thoroughcoverage of what matters most to the average reader of this book. That reader is of course, a maintenance mechanic currently working in industry. Many books on these topics are just too wordy and intimidating. Kissell's brevity is helpful without sacrificing content.

The content and graphics are simple and straight forward, not spending too much time getting deep into engineering level discussion. I also like the order in which the material is presented, it has a natural flow that keeps the average reader from having to flip back and forth through the book to make sense of it.

My recommendations to improve the book would be to:

1. Add some additional practice problems and also outline some practical laboratory exercises to reinforce the text.

2. Make references to other material that delve deeper into the theory behind the basics. Something similar to "For more information on this topic...Kissell's other works are equally well written, and prove his capabilities of deeper level discussion on industrial technology. With this book, he has succeeded in writing a book that provides the most essential theories and troubleshooting tips, and avoids material that does not aid in understanding. END

The classic power engineering book for oil & gas fields
This is THE classic technical book for power engineering as directly applied to oil and gas fields. It IS suitible for foremen, team members, engineers, anyone with any college experience. While it does include abstract, power engineering math, anyone working in an oil field can benefit.

The electric power aspects of oil extraction for primary recovery and waterflooding are well covered. This is down to nuts and bolts - what motor? what starter? what wire and field transformer?

This book was originally written in 1962 and updated in 1981. Some of the costs are out of date but the basic electric power information is still correct. Electrical power considerations for other forms of OER are not covered, since they were not common in 1962.

This book is hard to find, demand being low.

I would rate it 5 stars if it were updated and included sections on modern developments: progressive cavity oil pumping, steam flooding, higher effeciency motor types and applications, variable frequency drive applications.

Electromagnetic Wave Theory
Published in Paperback by John Wiley and Sons Ltd (02 September, 1987)
Author: J.A. Kong

Average review score:

Unique and Thorough Text on Electromagnetic Wave Theory
This book presents a unified macroscopic theory of electromagnetic waves. It covers a wide range of topics, including those which are standard in many engineering electromagnetics textbooks and some which are unique to this one. For example, standard fare includes transmission line theory, time harmonic fields, reflection and transmission at a boundary, guidance, and resonance. In addition, Kong also covers EM waves in media - isotropic, anisotropic, bianisotropic, plasma - and the kDB system which is something unique. Kong also goes into advanced topics such as dyadic Green's functions, light guidance in fiber optics, and special relativity. A great deal of emphasis is placed on the fundamental importance of the wave vector k in electromagnetic wave theory by Kong. This is the central theme of the text - if you understand k, then you can understand the behavior of the wave.

This text is mainly used for two graduate courses in electromagnetic wave theory at MIT. Essentially the text is a copy of the lecture notes. As a graduate level text, it has a great deal of mathematics. However, the author usually shows enough steps so that the student can follow. Anyhow, the math is tedious but not overly complex, except for a few horrid sections. The notation used throughout the book is not very consistent. For example, coordinates are switched and use of j is replaced with -i. All in all, however, the text is very good. There is flow and reason from section to section and chapter to chapter. Equations are explained reasonably well. Some of the more advanced sections can be hard to get through though. There definitely needs to be more explanation in some sections like the guidance and resonance sections. Be warned though - this textbook is definitely a work in progress. Kong continuously adds new material to every edition, since he'll still be fine-tuning his course material. One can definitely use this text as their first encounter with electromagnetic wave theory. However, exposing yourself to E&M with a text like Griffiths' Electrodynamics would be tremendously helpful as an introduction.

If one has the chance, one should definitely take a course with Professor Kong. He is a god of E&M. And his lectures are an experience you should definitely have - they're great!

Nice book
A good book, this presents a neat introduction to materials science as applicable to electronics. The book was written in a matter-of-fact way, and I quite enjoyed it.

You will also enjoy 'Physics of Semicondutor Devices' by S.M. Sze (Wiley); it's an excellent work in this line.

My Review
I like the way this book try to explain in easy to understand way, so I don't have to give full concentration to understand it, like other books. I recommend this book to those who have lack knowledge about electric physics and electric circuit, and this book is very good for those who are new / freshman in Electrical Engineering course.

Excellent for beginners in electronic circuit deisgn.
This is a very good beginners book on electronic circuit design using simple components like transistors, both bipolar & JFET, diodes, etc. There is a few beginning chapters dealing with electricity and transistor p-n junctions. There is a good discussion on the math computations on circuit design. Good also as a reference book on transistor amplifier circuit design.

Good Treatment of Band Structure
This is written by a longstanding expert in the field of solid state physics/condensed matter. The treatment is quite solid. He covers the differences between ionic and covalent bonded structures, using a depth of physics accessible to those at a junior undergraduate level or higher.

The differences between insulators and semiconductors are explained in terms of simple band structure, without drowning the reader in equations. The visual picture of band structure that the reader can derive from the text is straightforward and should greatly aid understanding.
