information and presentation
This book is strong with data and valuable information collected from various journals and reports. Taking this into consideration a reader can find easy to understand information on the political, social, economic, legal, and structural aspects of the European electricity market (in the first part of the book). The second part of the book presents studies of markets in countries including France, the UK, Nordic countries, and Hungary (I think the publisher forgot about hungary..but it's in there). The only weakness I have noticed in this book is the presentation. Having numerous authors may have made it difficult to avoid repetitive analysis and redundancies. Some sections treat similar issues in similar manners while some other sections treat them in very different ways making it hard to find continuity through the whole book (actually through any part at all). Although the reader will want to start with part-one before attacking part-two, he will be able to read chapters in each part in any order. Overall, the topic of this book is so broad and complex that a reader can only expect a good bigger-picture understanding of the subject. The appendix section containing definitions makes this book a challenging but feasible venture for a beginner in the field.

Ferroelectric Phenomena in Crystals: Physical Foundations

Not a bad book
Some parts are not clear enough especially the chapters on dynamic phenomena in ferroelectrics. Furthermore, I found some obvious printing mistakes. But totaly I would say not a bad book.

FINALLY! NOW THERE IS A GOOD TEXTBOOK ON FERROELECTRICITY
Finally the ferroelectrics community in particular, and the solid state society in general has a textbook on ferroelectricity! The book by Professor Levanyuk is absolutely written in a very elegant manner. It is a pleasure to read. Not only the phenomenon of ferroelectricity is described rigorously and logically but also in a "self-contained" form. It is self-contained in a sense that, although elements from the broader fields of phase transformations and statistical mechanincs are employed, the reader does not need to read many other books in "parallel" in order to understand the concepts presented in the book. That, unfortunately, has been the situation (in my experience) reading books such as the one by Lines & Glass (I still think their book is a good one...yet though to read). Macroscopic and microscopic models of ferroelectricity are presented and discussed in a complementary fashion and continuity is effectively maintained throughout the treatment. Eventhough the book is specifically written on ferroelectricity, the reader is exposed to the principles of phase transformations (first and secons order), statistical mechanics as well as lattice dynamics in a clear and thorough style. In short, with a great pleasure I give this book 5 *'s and highly recommend it. It would certainly make a perfect textbook for a graduate course in Materials Science, Solid State Chemistry, Solid State Physics and all allied disciplines.

Too simple for my liking
Nicola Tesla, the subject of the book, was one of the true geniuses of all time. His tale is of amazing innovation, with poor commercialisation. He made electricity travel for many miles when Edison could only transmit a few hundred meters. His radios could transmit anywhere in the world when Marconi could only transmit a few hundred meters. He completely designed the AC electrical system, which without the world would not be the same. Tesla is an excellent case of lack of business sense.

Lomas carries a grudge against the likes of Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, which is probably warranted in telling the story from Tesla's point of view. Much of the story is dedicated to describing the relationships between Tesla, Edison and Westinghouse.

This book isn't a great work. Lomas has thoroughly researched his book, although he has not referenced anything, although he does admit this. Some descriptions of engineering concepts could be a lot better. It is also relatively short. I found myself wanting more information. This book won't please the intellectual reader, who would be better off looking for a lengthier book. I enjoyed reading this book merely for the story of Tesla.

While I didn't enjoy this book that much it would be a very good read for children and teens, especially those with an interest in science. In general I recommend reading about Tesla, who is an amazing albeit forgotten character, and was responsible for the 20th century.

Brilliant
This book is very good. It shows how brilliant he really was. I would recommend this book to anyone. You go, Mr. Tesla!

Great for AB users
I have used this text in our PLC class for three years. I really like that it is specific to Allan Bradley products. The workbook that goes with this text has programming assignments to reinforce the concepts. As I train on AB SLC500s exclusively, it is almost ideal. I say almost becaue there are many references to obsolete instructions used with a PLC no longer manufactured. It is due for a new edition. But until then, it remains a very good text to teach from, or if you simply want to know more about the subject.

Excellent text for beginner students.
The text used in conjunction with the accompanny study guide were required text for an automation and control class. No errors noted, very easy and comprehensive reading. An excellent reference manual. One of the best required text books I have used.

Variable concepts
looking for a book that explanes in simple way the difrent areas of variable speed drives with no mathematical base, in a general way or for a introduction on the topic. Then this book is a good satrting point, it gives you a general idear of this technology, examples and a good base to continue searching variable speed drives.

Modern ac drives: explaining the practical aspects
Looking for a book about AC Drives written for technicians without mathematical background, I came up with this one. This text is clearly the result of an experienced engineer who tries to explain the fundamentals of modern driving technology in human language. Due to this attempt, mathematics had to be reduced to a minimum and most fundamental principles about electrical motors and driving technology have to be accepted as they are. Unfortunately, if you want to know why and how it happens, this book may not be the right choice. On the contrary, if you are purchasing a text with rule of thumbs, back of the envelope type calculations and practical aspects on motors and drives (AC & DC), this book deserves to be considered. A strong emphasis lies on the energy saving aspect of modern AC drives which is very important for all technicians using these drives. If there was an SI version of this text, I'd recommend it also to my colleagues/customers in Europe.

Small Houses for the Next Century
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (13 January, 1995)
Author: Duo Dickinson

Good idea, bad book
'Small House for the Next Century' is well designed and well written. Its photographs are excellent, and drawings well done, but I can't give this more than a 'so-so' rating.

It's probably just my own knuckleheaded thinking, but 'Small House for the Next Century' should have been called 'Small Vacation Homes for the Next Century'. Clearly the concepts applied here can be applied to other small houses, but the majority of the houses in this book are for wealthy people who can afford second or part-time homes. The designs (and costs) all play to this notion.

I would encourage anyone to look at this book, but if you're interested in small, low-impact, livable and economical homes, this is not the right book.

Building a Small House to Fit
This is no high-gloss, high-fluff content, coffee table book. It is, however, a great resource for anyone who is interested in architecture that keeps aesthetics, budget considerations, efficiency, and the personalities of the inhabitants in mind. I bought Duo Dickinson's book because my fiancee and I want to build our own home eventuallly. Reading this book has been inspiring and informative--it contains detailed descriptions, floor plans, hundreds of black and white photos and architectural drawings, as well as, a middle section of beautiful full page color plates. The main focus is the concept of "fit"--building the house to fit the occupants' needs. Many of the homes shown were built by the architects for themselves and/or family members. I really liked this book because it gave me a concrete set of ideas that my fiancee and I can use to build our own perfect home.

Huge Potential
Why is amorphous silicon important? This book explains its significance in a variety of contexts. To the researcher interested in pure science, its properties are sufficiently different from crystalline or polycrystalline silicon to offer nontrivial studies.

But the greatest potential for amorphous silicon is in vast pervasive applications. Firstly, silicon is very common in the earth's crust, so applications that can make use of it can benefit from this. But, as the book makes clear, it is the expense of making pure crystalline silicon that has driven a lot of the research into amorphous silicon. Crystalline silicon is the base material in most semiconductor fabs. (The only major exception are the fabs that use GaAs. But those are for niche applications.) Amorphous silicon can be made by inherently cheaper means, like sputtering, and under far less stringent particulate contamination limits.

This motivates the book's discussion on the use of amorphous silicon in various contexts, like for solar cells. If the efficiency could be pushed sufficiently high, without a concomitant increase in the cost of manufacturing, then this could be a huge commercial field.

Interesting and challenging readings.

Some comments
'Atom-Field Interactions and Dressed Atoms' is a useful book for graduate students and reseachers in the field of Quantum Optics. The interaction between atoms and electromagnetic fields is a research area which demands strong backgound in mathematics and numerical simulations. From this point of view the authors give a very good approach of the subject. Furthermore, modern topics in Atom Optics are highlighted. This book could be a guide for researchers dealing with Atom Optics.
