A most concise and integral reference on MH applications
This highly rated manual, covers just about every practical and tangible theoretical introduction to the full design and/up to implementation cycle of MH projects, all in about 370 pages. It is important that it was written and amply illustrated not only with detailed schematics, but also with actual pictures from original installations in developing countries, which makes a viable aid in comprehending the "actual picture". The chapters covered detail a syllabus in: Components and Design of an MH Scheme, Cost benefit estimations, Hydrology and site survey, Flow prediction, Civil works and operational parts (all aspects from Weirs to Penstocks), Commercial engineering, Turbines (including reverse pumps), Governing, Drive systems, a very thorough presentation of the -cumbersome- Electrical Power System aspects, along with Operational, Maintenance, Financial and Commissioning aspects. Should there be something more for an engineer to wish for, would be more info on turbines -something you would expect to find in a specialized book on the subject anyway. The book should provide a valuable asset not only to MH engineers, but to Renewable Energy Technology engineers as well, since it is progressively becoming apparent that a combination of RET along with Pumped Storage and MH, presents a highly attractive opportunity for both developed and developing countries

Superb work, Nobel-Prize worthy
The insight given in this book is, without a doubt, beneficial not just to mankind, but also and especially developing countries. I highly recommend.

Essential Reading on the Subject
This book describes all the aspects involved in gettting a micro hydro plant running. It has the right blend of "The birds eye view" on the subject, very useful to people, new to the subject as well as "earth worm view": You can use this use this book as a guide to select the right kind of drive pulley for you plant.

by a long way the best in this field
This book is broad, general and extremely thorough, by far and away the most thorough and easy to read of the six books I have read on this subject. The introduction says it all by claiming that the most difficult part to understanding semiconductor materials is the quantum mechanics, and Loehr gives the reader an extremely firm grounding in the necessary quantum theory. Also the sugested reading at the end of each chapter is a superb idea.

Outstanding
Cohen-Tannoudji move over, the new big dog of quanum mechanics has arrived. This book illuminates the mysteries of quantum mechanics like no other that I have read.

Brilliant!!! Quantum Well Laser Physics is so clear now!!!
This Loehr guy is a whiz! This book filled a much needed void in my education. I barely finished high school but now I'm performing the multiband envelope function approximation on my own. This is what I call solid state physics for the masses!

If this guy wrote a book about Stonehenge or Druids I would probably understand them too!!

Essential reading for Western Australians
I very strongly recommend this book to fellow Western Australians. It details how and why our State Government is currently lying to us about how and why Western Power is to be 'reformed'. The section on electricity privatisation in Australia is one of the most detailed and thorough in this detailed and thorough book and deserves very careful reading. In general, this book demolishes many myths about how globalisation and capitalism are supposed to work and explains clearly how modern economic management really works. Enron was the highest mark of that system, and this book explains how and why it made so much money, and how so much money was made by the rich and lost by others in its collapse.

An articulate critic of corporate power
Hegel once remarked that the only thing people learn from history is that people have learned nothing from history. To that end, the philosopher no doubt would have been intrigued by Sharon Beder's outstanding book "Power Play." In it, the author shows how the neo-liberal ideologies and financial self-interests that once conspired to create chaos in the electric power industry in the 1930s have been resurrected in our own time to produce similarly disastrous results. Importantly, her analysis helps us understand what needs to be done to restore order to an out-of-control system that garners most of its profits at the public's expense.

In my estimation, Sharon Beder has established herself as one of the most articulate critics of corporate power. As a Professor of Social Sciences, Media and Communications in Australia, Ms. Beder has demonstrated in prior books such as "Global Spin" a remarkable knack for deconstructing propaganda and uncovering the agendas that are often hidden behind corporate messages. I found "Power Play" to be a carefully reasoned, well-supported and convincing piece of research that makes for compelling reading.

The book is divided into five sections. The first deals with the history of power politics in the U.S. for most of the 20th century. We learn how private interests used the media and political influence to promote deregulation, and how the industry's eventual implosion was a major contributing factor in the stock market crash of 1929 and subsequent Great Depression. The second section discusses the push to deregulate in the latter part of the century to the present day. We see how legislation enacted in the 1930s to protect against corporate abuse was eventually rolled back, which in turn set the stage for companies like Enron to suffer a fate similar to that which befell Samuel Insull's energy empire in the 1930s.

The third, fourth and fifth sections deal with deregulation in Britain, Australia and other parts of the world. The global perspective provided by Ms. Beder is useful. Clearly, ideology and financial interests have been the driving forces behind the privatization agenda; interestingly, we learn that the outcomes in various locales have been remarkably similar. Ms. Beder relates how large corporations are often able to exercise market power in order to extort unusually large fees from their customers. The winners are large industrial users and the banks, investors and consultants working on behalf of the energy companies. The losers include taxpayers, farmers, the poor, small businesses and the environment.

In my opinion, although "Power Play" does not explicitly tie the economic inefficiencies of the deregulated power industry with the current economic downturn, it provides ample evidence that the crisis in the power industry significantly contributes to job loss and siphons capital from other productive sectors of the economy. For example, the author explains that privatized energy companies often cut payrolls in order to boost bottom-line profits. Ms. Beder also shows how obscene profits earned by a few large corporations such as Enron often act as a drag on local economies. The leading example of course is California, where escalating prices forced many businesses to shut down. Moreover, the payments that the state was forced to make to greedy suppliers during the energy crisis easily exceeds the state's current budget deficit, causing hardship for many.

Interestingly, "Power Play" was completed prior to the 2003 blackout in the U.S. and Canada. This unfortunate event validates Ms. Beder's work. The author points out that the dynamics of an unregulated market and the quest for instant profits provides a disincentive for producers to maintain equipment and transmission lines, resulting in more frequent failures and service disruptions. Ms. Beder goes on to point out that the expense and risk associated with added capacity is increasingly borne by the public even while profits accrue to private interests; this assertion also appears to have been prescient, as witnessed by the huge subsidies that the U.S. government has recently proposed to pay for upgrades to the country's electric grid for the benefit of many privately-held energy producers.

By cutting through the smokescreen of self-serving corporate propaganda, "Power Play" serves as a wakeup call for citizens everywhere. It helps us understand how we might be able to reverse this trend for the better before more damage is inflicted on us all.

The best book on why U S electric power is in chaos
Beder has written the indispensable account of why the American electric power industry is in extreme disarray. This is an account of deregulation, Enron, artificial prices and gross exploitation. It is the book of the moment: timely and relevant to the electric blackouts of August 2003, easy to understand, and really essential. Extremely informative.

PRACTICAL ELECTRICAL WIRING - 18th Ed.
This new (18th) edition of Practical Electrical Wiring is an excellent guide to basic (and also not-so-basic)residential, farm and commercial electrical wiring. It has been completely updated from the 17th edition, and reflects the latest changes in the 2002 National Electrical Code.

The text covers an astonishing range of subjects, from the basics of volts and amperes to some very solid material on grounding, wiring methods, residential service, and conductor sizing.

This book is quite different from the typical Sunset do-it-yourself guides that one picks up at Home Depot. It will not tell you how to rewire Aunt Sophie's favorite lamp. It will tell you about residential branch circuits, overcurrent devices (fuses and circuit breakers), outlet and switch boxes, residential and nonresidential lighting, special appliance circuits, safety, wiring methods, electric motors, and a great deal more.

It has an excellent section on how to modernize old work, including how to run wiring through ceilings, walls, and from floor-to-floor. And in case you've forgotten how, it also has a clear illustration of how to tie an Underwriter's Knot (see page 355)!

This really is an excellent book, obviously written by a person who has many years of practical experience and knows what he is talking about. It would serve well as a vocational school text and as a fine general reference book for the homeowner and for journeyman electrician.

To round it out, it is well illustrated, has useful NEC ampacity and load tables in the appendices, and has a very comprehensive index.

Recommended.

The only book you need to wire your house
We bought this hoping to get ideas for wiring our new house. With only this book we were able to wire our entire new house - from setting the power at the street - to wiring our well . Not only were we able to wire our entire house - it passed inspection on the first try with no corrections . A very valuable book for home owners and builders.

Focuses on fundamentals and provides good applications
This books focuses on the fundamentals of electric circuits. It walks students very carefully through the basics of electric circuits. What I liked in particular was that the book provides examples of things like: "why would you place resistors in parallel" or "why would you place resistors in a series".

It has a CD in the back that I haven't tried yet, but looks interesting. The CD has more experiments with circuits using a simulator or two.

This book is da bomb
Once again.... THis book is da bom

A guide line for the problems in the book
Hi. principles of electric circuit book is very usefull book.but I would like to have a guideline for the problems in every chapter, like step by step, or problem solve guide line. plese e-mail me with the information about that. thank you.

QED and the Men Who Made It

Great book
Love it so far. Brilliant insight into not just the men behind the theories - but also physics itself.

Superb overview of the development of QED...
This book is a superb overview of the development of QED. The slant is geared towards the major personalities involved in it's development. The key players of course were: Feynman, Schwinger, Dyson, and Tomonaga. The text is quite detailed and is directed towards the academic community and assumes a cursory knowledge of quantum mechanics. That being the case, I got lost in much of the math. However, I kept at it and got much out of the book. If you are a physics major then this book will be a jewel to own. What an experience to "see" the human mind come up with ideas which at first glance seem impossible but later turn out to be perfectly true. The writing is quite turgid as is the case with books put out by Princeton, but the material is just fantastic. If the math overwhelms you, as it did me, just get the main idea down and forge on. Later, if time and patience permits re-visit the portion that got you lost and try again. I did this but still am lost in many areas. Nevertheless, a great read!!

Thorough Coverage of the Pinaccle of 20th Century Physics
This is a very technical and historical review of the creation of the 20th Centuries most accurate of all physics, QED. The work is very complete and besides the mathematics, it provides excellant yet terse backgrounds of the 4 major players: Tomonaga, Schwinger, Feynman and Dyson. The backgounds of these personalities is weaved into their astounding developments leading to QED. This book should not only serve as a historical timepiece, but I beleive it could serve very well as an adjunct to even graduate level physics.

Practical IS good!!!
Carol Fey has a magical talent: she can take a complicated subject and condense it into 80 easy and fun to read pages. Although this is a short, mini-text, do not be fooled; it is not a kids book: novices to experts in the HVAC field will benefit. Ms. Fey has written 3 such books; all 3 in my opinion are must-reads. Each can be easily and completely read within 2 hours. I learned more from her than the 3 semester courses I took over the course of a year in HVAC!! Probably the only book I have ever read that I wished was actually longer!! Thanks Ms. Fey; PLEASE WRITE MORE TEXTS!!!

National Electrical Estimator, 2000
The National Electric Estimator 2000 is a great resource. I have used several of the National Estimator books from Craftsman in the past and have been more than pleased with the quality, this one is no exception. From the estimating tables to the information about various aspects of the electrical trade I was impressed repeatedly with how easy it was to access and use the information. An added bonus is the cd which is included with the book. This cd is the National Electrical Estimator program and contains all of the information that is in the book. This program alone is worth the purchase price of the book! All of the tables are fully editable, from the tax rate to labor and materials costs, this program could be a valuable estimating tool for any small business. I highly recommend this book!

an excellent, graduate level book on electric machinery
A graduate level book. It talks about the detail model and behavior of induction machine, synchronous machine and etc. The book gave me quite an idea of machinery. It was well written and explained in a detail and clear way. Since it is the first textbook I bought at USA, after reading, I cannot help wonder: that's the reason why American has advance technology, because they have good books. In my coutry, China, the authors likes to write hard, tough things in a small thin book and we can hardly understand them.

Excellent Work!
Excellent work by excellent authors. Simply the best you can find in this field!

Basic Mathmatics for Electricity and Electronics
The best book of electronics in the world

Basic Mathmatics for Electricity and Electronics
This is without a doubt one of thee most detaild but easiest books to follow in the field of elecronics. It gives detailed information on everything from the very basic resistors, and Ohm's Law, to Thevenin's Theorum. I can't say enough about this book, it is my bible for everything I do.
