Foundations of Solid Mechanics
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (June, 1965)
Author: Y. C. Fung

Used price: $57.95
Average review score:

very concise and thorough
this is a great reference for the theory of elasticity. it's very easy to read and plenty of problems let you test your understanding. if you are starting to learn the theory, this is the book for you. fung also provides chapters on thermodynamics, thermoelasticity, viscoelasticity, finite deformations, and a number of mathematical techniques applicable in special cases.

that said, fung focuses on formulating elasticty in a form used by engineers and scientists to obtain explicit solutions to selected problems. some physicists may find this form of elasticity somewhat abstracted from reality. if you're interested in an analysis of how elasticity came about and what were its motivations, you'll have to look to tymoshenko, sokolnikov, or love. on the other hand, if you're a practicing engineer, you're likely more interested in numerical solutions or the finite element method. for such applications, better references are holzapfel or gurtin.

This book IS in print!
Foundations of Solid Mechanics is an excellent text on solid mechanics. Its content makes up the first 15 chapters of Classical and Computational Solid Mechanics, by Fung and Tong (published 2001). In addition to all of the content from Foundations of Solid Mechanics, Classical and Computational Solid Mechanics contains 6 chapters on computational methods, emphasizing FEM. The book is very thorough and a real deal at ...for almost 1000 pages.

From the preface: "The classical part is mainly a re-issue of Fung's Foundations of Solid Mechanics, with a major addition to the modern theories of plasticity, and a major revision of the theory of large elastic deformation with finite strains."

Please, please revive a print of this book
I (and at least two dozen people I know) would love to have this book on our shelves. Right now we are reduced to borrowing copies from older and wiser friends and colleagues. Quite simply, in my opinion one of the best solid mechanics texts ever.

Excellent introduction text...
If you want to learn the non-linear theory this is the book to start with for the following reasons: - It devellops in the same way as the book on classical elasticity, by Love. - It does not use tensorcalcus to derive the formulas, exept for one paragraph. - The derivation of the equations are very clear and precice, omitting only the easy (obvious) steps.

The only drawback of this book is that there are few practical applications, it's sole purpose is the development of the theory.

Good old book.
You can find the references to this work in any paper in nonlinear mechanics! Book is small, but it's cool! I like to have it my home library.

classical and complete
absolute bible in elasticity, every professor who teach elasticity would list it among the reference books. But you have to invest much time to understand it.

A very complete book on elasticity...
Though the original print goes back as far as 1927, the foundations of the theory of linear elasticity aren't changed so this book is still up to date.

Though this book is an introduction text, as it devellops the theory from the very basics, it covers a wide range of applications that are hard to find elsewhere. For example, the equations of Hertz for contact stresses are develloped, the elasticity of a gravitating rotating sphere(earth), torsional deflextion of thin beams in bending and shell- and plate theory. This all in considarable detail.

The style of writing is not oldfashioned at all and is easy to read. Not as easy is the amount of math and time you have to invest to really understand this book. It's does not use tensor represantations but still demands a ready knowledge of advanced calcus (determinants, multivariable calcus, line-integrals, etc.)

It's text only and has no exercices, it's a very enjoyable and rewarding book. It even has a brief chapter on the development of the theory through the centuries.

My favourite collection
Excellent book in solid mechanics. It provides a comprehensive, readable and organized introduction to elasticity, viscoelasticity, creep, plasticity for graduate students in solid mechanics field. Many top universities in North America recommend/use it as a reference book.

In a word,it is one of my best collection in my shelf.

Excellent book
A mechanics book by a great mathematician, Mathematical Theory of Elasticity by Sokolnikoff is the right one that could bring you much deep insight. His style of writing and his lucid explanation not only give you knowlege of mechanics but also distill you much mathematical confidence. I have dozens of Elasiticity books, and this one obviously belongs to one of the best I collected.

A masterpiece
For those who are involved in any way with the mathematical theory of 2-D elasticity, this book is really a must have. Though the first edition goes back to 1949 (English edition by Noordhoff Ltd in 1953), it still contains everything that is known in this field. It actually employs the theory of holomorphic functions, Cauchy integrals and conformal mapping in order to solve the various boundary value problems met in plane elasticity. It is almost self contained as far as it concerns its mathematical background. Its results can be used to treat numerous applications of practical interst, such as cracks, inclusions, holes, contact problems, etc. Its a pitty it is out of print (or in print-on-demand only). It can be used along with the same author's "Singular Integral Equations" (another masterpiece on the subject) and Gakhov's:"Boundary Value Problems". Basic knowledge of complex analysis is a prerequisite. It covers 700 pages, contents are: 1. Analysis of stress 2. Analysis of strain 3. Basic Equations 4. Basic eqns of the plane theory of elasticity 5. Stress function-Complex representation 6.Multi-valued displacements. Thermal stresses 7. Transformation of the basic formulae for conformal mapping 8.On Fourier series 9. Solutions for regions bounded by a circe 10.The circular ring 11. Application of conformal mapping 12.Fundamental properties of Cauchy integrals 13.Boundary values of holomorphic functions 14.General solution for the fundamental problems for regions bounded by one contour 15.solution of the fundamental problems for regions mapped onto a circle by rational functions 16.solution for the half-plane and for semi-infinite regions 17.some general methods for solution of bouundary value problems 18.The problem of linear relationship 19.Solution for the half-plane and the plane with straight cuts 20.solution of boundary problems for regions bounded by circle and the infinite plane cut along circular arcs 21.solution of the boundary problems for regions mapped onto a circle by rational functions 22.Torsion and bending of homogenous bars 23.Torsion of bars consisting of different materials 24.Extension and bending of bars consisting of different materials with uniform Poisson's ratio 25.Extension and bending for different Poisson's ratio. Appendix 1. On the concept of a tensor Appendix 2.On the determination of functions from their differentials in multiply connected regions. Appendix 3. Elastic stability
The most up-to-date and lucid text in a very large field of study.
Incorporates nearly all of the original British and Harvard schools of study.
Has fundamentally interesting problem sets where there have not been many before.
