False Economy: Australia in the 20th Century
Published in Paperback by Fremantle Arts Center Pr (March, 1998)
Author: William J. Lines
Amazon base price: $19.95
Collectible price: $62.55
Average review score:

Unusual blend of family and economic history
This subject of this book is listed as economics and business. I don't know why. In fact, the book tells the story of the author's family, from the time his grandparents arrived in Australia. It goes beyond a nostalgic tale of pioneers and interweaves the intimate story of his family with the broad scale economic history of the country- and in particular, its dependence on exploiting and desecrating nature. Among Lines' targets are economics (in general), Keynesian economics in particular, materialism, bureaucracies and (some) environmentalists. Its general approach is, I think, a deep-ecology one.

This is a challenging book that has no simple message about how we can change our lives for the better.

A provocative collection
No matter what you think about environmentalism, nature, and ecology, this book has an essay to challenge your assumptions. More than that, though: these essays don't merely challenge, but rather expand your viewpoint.

The essays are arranged under five categories: Finding Home; The Geographies of Home; Other Walls, Other Wildness; A Child's Sense of Wildness; and Metaphors of Desire. There are magnificent and evocative essays by such well-known writers as Barry Lopez, Scott Russell Sanders, Terry Tempest Williams, and David Ehrenfeld, but also some wonderful pieces by writers who are less known. One of my own favorites is Wallace Kaufman's "Confessions of a Developer", an essay I found so fascinating that I wanted it to be an entire book of its own.

As can be expected from any work originally published by Orion Magazine, the writing here is uniformly excellent. Even if you have no interest in the ideas and philosophies behind these essays, you can revel in the beautiful language of most of them. It would be a shame, though, to ignore what these writers have to say.

Excellent info about wild blue-green algae
Dr. Apsley has done his homework. This is a wonderful source of information about the nutritional value of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (wild blue-green algae). A huge proportion of the food raised for consumption is radiated, or grown with chemicals. It contains a fraction of the vitamins and minerals that are needed for optimum health. Dr. Apsley offers hope and a solution to those of us who want a whole food supplement that has not been genetically engineered or altered in any way. Wild blue-green Algae has a high profile in the three basics: proteins, carbohydrates and fats. It is easily assimilated and used by the body. Nature's superfood is one of the richest known sources of B-12, which is especially important for a vegetarian like me. It is also an excellent source of the Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. According to Dr. Apsley, the people who consume wild-blue green algae on a regular basis (at least 1 gram per day) report numerous health improvements and benefits as their bodies de-toxify and heal on a cellular level.

Finding delight in persistance of place
Written in 1972, by the eminent microbiologist, this work presents valuable perspectives on todays ecological crisis. Not one to despair of events, Dubos seeks positive values in man's relation to nature. He emphasizes the particular and the regional differences, the "Spirit of place" that symbolizes the forces hidden beneath the surface and the persistence of a psyche of place. He does not conclude that mans relationship must be negative, and takes heart in human altered landscapes such as Britain's moors and in evidence of sustainable agriculture in Japan and Amish societies of America.

Dubos does not blame the Judeo-Christian tradition, but rather sees hope in Benedictine stewardship (as opposed to a "unrealistic" Franciscan view) that make it possible to maintain nature in a humanized condition.

He is not Pollyannic and recognizes the "Demon within" .. the thrust of technology and institutions that may run counter to living in harmony with nature. I recommend this book not because it offers simple answers, but because if offers a well-read source of different perspectives.

clear, easy intro.....
....to the principles of ecology. This book, if you can find it, is logically organized and very easy to understand. It moves gradually from the foundational dynamics (energy flows, eat-or-be-eaten) to entire ecosystems.

Some readers will be distracted by the dated references to outer space and the cute chapter headings--"Methods for Mission Impossible," etc. Most of the first chapter, Wonder and Anxiety, was a teaching device that seemed to me to take forever to get to the point; other readers less familiar with ecology might find it useful, however.

Bottom line: I'd buy another book from this author. It's always nice to find clear voices in the sciences.

Inspired and Impressive
Although I, myself, am not deaf or hard of hearing, many of my family members are. It was due to this that I took my first "real" job as an Audiological Assistant at REM Audiology in Philadelphia. Through my work I was inspired to learn as much as I could about hearing difficulties. This book was one of the first that I read on the subject, and I was thouroughly impressed. Not only did Kryter delve into the causes of loss, but also explored ways to prevent common problems. I reccomend this book to anyone who wants to learn about their hearing, and it is on our Must Read list at the office.

More Than Just Light, the Rainbow of Health
John Nash Ott in his breakthrough book warns of the dangers of the overuse and under-regulation of modern electromagnetic technology. He also discusses the negative effects of digital watches, certain man made fibers such as polyester and vinyl, ionizing-type smoke detectors, certain types of fluorescent lighting, video display terminals, electronic fetal monitoring equipment in hospitals, and other high technology items. The book has easy-to-do demonstrations showing the relationship of colored lighting and the positive and negative effects that it can create. He links light, color and health.
