Excellent perspective on life...very down-to-Earth

The courage to say what we know . . . and what we don't knowThe book consists of two parts. An overview of the history of WAO regulation and a careful inquiry into the conditions that affect the likelihood of exit from the WAO. The overview of the history of the Disability Act is interesting in its own right. It brings across an image of a government struggling to reverse a development that should have been dealt with at a much earlier stage. Any government, even the Dutch, can learn from viewing the process of mistakes and quasi-solutions that are painstakingly collected by the author.
The explanatory part addresses several questions, all of which have to do with the factors attributing to being able to leave the WAO once you're in. That this question is an important one is convincingly shown using a multitude of figures. Heart of the matter is: when you're in, you're stuck. In fact, when you're a woman and you're in, you're certainly stuck. The author meticulously pinpoints all possible factors attributing to this process, thereby exhibiting the nature of the true scientist. Sometimes you learn something, sometimes you don't, and the author is honest enough to acknowledge not only her victories, but also the occurences where the cold facts slay a carefully deduced hypothesis.
This is a carefully written book on governmental policy and the way in which it affects the decisions of people, of interest for those who want to more about the Dutch social security system, for social scientists interested in regulation issues, and for anyone who wants to see a proficient social scientist at work, trying to make sense out of the messy world around us.

A fascinating look at radar, government, and August

Even the most skeptical reader will be forever changedIn this remarkable and eminently readable book, Dr. Janus presents evidence from a variety of sources that documents the reality of preverbal, prenatal psychological life and the enduring effects of prenatal experience later in life so convincingly, that even the most skeptical reader, be he scientist, philosopher, theologian, professional helper, parent or child, will come away from having read it forever changed. The reader reviews with Dr. Janus the facts that intrauterine life entails the experience of both bliss and danger, that birth inevitably involves both trauma and triumph, that all humans are born prematurely compared to other animals, and that both the unborn and the newborn need an all too often lacking compassionate social womb to soften their approach to and arrival into this world.
To read this book is in itself a therapeutic experience, both disturbing and exhilarating. It is impossible to immerse oneself in the massive information Dr. Janus presents without having one's own prenatal memories stirred, and without examining one's own assumptions and prejudices about prenatal experience. As one reads the material Dr. Janus presents documenting the deleterious consequences of primary trauma in individual dysfunction and in re-enactments in intimate relationships, one must also review how one's own prenatal experiences, and those of others, may have influenced one's own development, one's career, one's relationships with one's family of origin, and one's personal relationships in the larger society. Dr. Janus gives numerous examples to show how mankind has attempted to cope with the fears and wishes derivative from prenatal and perinatal trauma through myths, art, music, sacrifice, concepts of death and renewal, rites of passage, the hero, ideas of omnipotence, war, religion, and totalitarian government.
Particularly important is Dr. Janus' emphasis on the need to dissolve social and professional resistance to considering and examining prenatal and perinatal psychology so that destructive re-enactments, both individual and social, or fixations related to very early trauma can be avoided or remedied when they occur. Several examples illustrate the remarkable therapeutic results which have occurred when the principles of psychoanalysis were extended beyond the examination of early childhood into exploration of the underwater world of the unborn or half-born patient. As increasing knowledge of prenatal and perinatal psychology filters into the culture, it is helping parents and others to relate more intimately and respectfully to the unborn and the newborn. This knowledge has become part of a movement toward more aware relating to the unborn, more gentle birthing and more tender neonatal care. Hopefully, this will influence the development of a more loving, less defensive social structure and will decrease the likelihood of the effects of primal trauma being acted out on succeeding generations.

Plants in our EnvironmentAs professional environmental consultants, we need to understand the global impact of these situations, as well as our own local issues.
Anyone with a science background, working in this industry can benefit from this careful review - even those without the hard science as their background can appreciate the significance.
I advise you to read this book, and understand how even as locally focused environmentalists, we impact the global ecology.

STEADY FLOW OF SIMPLIFIED ENZYMOLOGYThis handbook will suit anybody whose preoccupations include offering or receiving nutritional advice. It clearly outlined and defined the basic principles of enzymology: focussing on both their nature and their clinical applications. Without delving into the complex kinetics aasociated with catalytic reactions, "Enzymes: The Key to Health" did shed light on the biochemical and physiological pathways connected with each enzyme it discussed.
It also did a good job in describing the multicomponent forms of these globular proteins. The same could be said concerning the way it classified each enzyme group.
This is an interesting book to read, if you want to get a good understanding of enzymology with little or no biochemistry hassles. It was written in such a way that non-scientists could understand. It provides a steady flow of simplified enzymology gists.

Good content, unfinished editingThe author believes that the VR (verb + resultative) construction had its origins in the separable resultative structure with an order of VXR, in which X could be an object, adverb, or negative particle. Subsequently the V fused with the R so that there could be no intervening material, thus yielding the modern VR form.
The key factors Shi posits in the formation of the resultative construction are (1) the emergence of disyllabification in Chinese, which promoted fusion of the V and R elements; (2) idiomatization of the most frequently used collocations, which first produced individual lexical items but eventually a generalized syntactic pattern; (3) elimination of the _er2_ 'and' connective, which produced both resultative constructions and serial verbs; and (4) establishment of a verb-result relationship in the construction, in which telic states followed and other adverbs preceded the verb.
Shi believes the VR construction was the motivating cause behind several major changes in Chinese syntax, including the _ba3_ disposal construction and the verb copying construction. One of Shi's many interesting observations: unlike English resultatives, such as 'to lick the platter clean', a change of state indicated by a Chinese resultative does not have to immediately follow the V action; e.g. _chi1pang4_ 'to eat until fat' takes place over an extended period of time (p. 30).
It seems that this book went to press without much editorial or typographical quality control at all - there are many misspellings, incorrect Chinese characters, and 'Chinese English' translations of examples. And it is overpriced. Still, the merits and original findings of this book, which are many and noteworthy, should not be overshadowed by its shortcomings. It makes a significant contribution to the study of resultatives in Chinese and their historical development - I personally gained many valuable and useful insights and ideas from this book - and it should be available in any institutional research library with a linguistics section, especially if it were carefully edited and reissued...
