A Dialogue on Chemically Induced Nuclear Effects: A Guide for the Perplexed About Cold Fusion
Published in Hardcover by Amer Nuclear Society (July, 1995)

Science at it's best
This book so easily explains the "hoopla" concerning the whole cold fusion issue. Great reading!

cold hoopla explained perfectly
As a daughter of a scientist, I could relate to the skeptics out there who question the theory of whether cold fusion can be proven or if it should actually just be called hoopla as Dr. Nathan Hoffman would say. If so, I could say that after reading this book, you will lay the book down with a strong view of optimism for cold fusion, or perhaps a stronger appreciation for scientific study. Either way, the impact of science regardless in what field will amaze you and leave you hungry for more!!!

CALLING A SPADE A SPADE
Hoffman explains how so many scientist could have erroneously concluded that cold fusion worked. He describes processes that were heretofore misunderstood and led to the fiasco that became the "Cold Fusion Hoopla." His remarks were right on the money, for as we see five years later, cold fusion has not become the panacea that it was made out to be.

Interesting AND informative
I bought this book to study for a quiz-out test for my Psych major. I read through three chapters the first time I picked it up. I usually have to force myself to complete an assignment, but with this book I just kept reading with no pushing whatsoever! I highly recommend this book to anyone taking a class in this subject, whether or not it is the required text. It would be a great additional information source. It is helpful if you or someone you know may be going through any type of drug or alcohol treatment--from caffeine to heroin. I also enjoyed the online quizzes you are allowed to access once you have the book. It really enforces what you have learned.

Excellent source of information!
I thought this was an excellent source of informaion. I used it for a class and earned an A. Very thorough and easy to understand. Lay terms are frequently used and I found I learned a lot and found it very valuable.

Informative and Strictly No-nonsense
This book is the source for unbiased information on the sociological, psychological, pathological effects of "drugs" - this compendium covers everything from caffeine to antipsychotics to alcohol to psychedelics and everything in between. A review of the history of each drug introduces each chapter. Careful attention is paid to not only the effects of the drugs themselves, but the effect which they have on our laws and the way in which treat addiction.

As a former student of Dr. Ray's I can attest to the thoroughness of this work. It is the one book that doesn't tell you what to think about drugs - it provides you with the data to be informed to make your own decision. In fact the DEA uses this book in training! If you are looking for a comprehensive resource for school, your own interest, or just to be informed to talk to your kids, look no further.

Warning: This Book May Be Hazardous to Your Blood Pressure.
Let me say right up front that I am a steadfast supporter of the free market. However, it serves neither the free market nor humanity when giant corporations are run by people who are no better than mass murderers. Exaggeration? Read this book and see if you still think so. I read "Fatal Deception" because a friend of mine and his wife acquired a vacation cabin in Libby, Montana a few years back. When newspaper reports began appearing about the widespread asbestos poisoning there, I asked if that was the same town. "Yep," he replied with a disgusted sigh. "We call it our own little Three Mile Island, Montana." (Fortunately, the relative who'd given them the cabin later demanded it back.)

The straightforward language, excellent pacing, and suspense-building structure of "Fatal Deception" make it a hard book to put down. Author Michael Bowker skillfully weaves heartwrenching victims' stories with damning excerpts from documents proving that for over sixty years the asbestos industry and the U.S. government concealed scientific evidence that would have prevented thousands of agonizing deaths. At least as far back as the 1930s, industry higher-ups knew that exposure to asbestos was extremely dangerous. Yet not only did they fail to warn their workers, they brazenly lied and assured them all that dust they were breathing and taking home on their clothes was harmless. Faced with growing medical evidence to the contrary, the asbestos companies conspired in a long-lasting cover-up that successfully hid the truth from the public so that asbestos workers and their families wouldn't discover the dangers to which they were exposing themselves. The industry had help in this cover-up, of course, from good old Uncle Sam.

"Fatal Deception" is not merely a sickening portrait of coldblooded corporate greed, but a wake-up call that vividly illustrates why the U.S. government will never behave with integrity until Americans stop electing politicians willing to prostitute themselves to whichever special-interest groups stick the most money down their pants. Angry? You bet I am. By the time you finish this book, you will be, too.

The information in this book surprised me.
This book caught my attention because my husband just died of mesothelioma. I wondered how he got it because he did not work around asbestos. I learned from the book that, contrary to my assumption, asbestos has not been banned because of the powerful influence of the asbestos industry on Congress. The book reported that many products contain asbestos - things like brake pads, floor tile, shingles, insulation that my husband came in contact with because he was a "do-it-yourselfer". And the book outraged me in describing how many companies that mined or manufactured asbestos products knew of the dangers to their employees and did nothing to protect them. The book was very informative and well documented and yet it was a real horror story of big business completely disregarding human life in the search for the almighty dollar.

Profits Over People
Michael Bowker has done a thorough and compelling job of telling how asbestos has ravaged the American work force in the past half
century. 'Fatal Deception' not only provides an insider's look at the history of this dangerous mineral, but wraps it around an epic disaster which has been occurring for decades in the small town of Libby, Montana. I know this story, because I have produced a documentary on the town called 'Dust to Dust', which Michael Bowker has generously credited in his book. 'Fatal Deception' takes the reader behind the headlines and reveals the disbelief EPA investigators had until confronted with the awful truth of Libby.
The book is like a good suspense novel, but unfortunately, the story is all too real.
I highly recommend it.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Effects: Strategies fo
Ms. Malbin provides insight and strategies that are effective for both professionals and families living with and loving children exposed prenatally. A FASD classic.

A must read for professionals and parents
This is an excellent book for social workers, rehabilitation counselor's, drug and alcohol counselor's, mental health therapists, teacher's, doctor's, and parent's of FAS/FAE children. The research-based studies showing behavior and life=skills improvement after trying the new strategies of treatment is an eye-opener. Basically, it encourages a new way of thinking in treatment for this population.

Wonderful
I have two children with FAS. This book has helped in so many ways. When my children first came to my home, I lived in a rural area that did not know anything about FAS, from the pediatricians, the schools, the psychologist, etc. I bought one for all of them. I have recently moved to another state, and just last week I had a psychologist ask if I had a spare copy for her. Excellent for the professionals and for the parents!

I have been searching for an authoritative text like this for a long time, and finally here it is. This complete book is an invaluable resource for every medical and research library, professor, doctor, and student. Don't wait to add this one to your shelf. You'll refer back to it time and again. I recommend it without reservation.

Lasting Reference Book
This textbook is a welcome addition to the field. I have been searching for a definitive reference for a long time, and finally here is a smart, readable text which I can go back to time and again. I recommend this book with no reservations.

An Important Work
This is an important work that has clearly been written by a thorough and thoughtful scientist. Ms. Gore brings a cohesive understanding of and a unique perspective to GnRH neuron research that has heretofore been lacking. If you are in the field of endorcinology, neuroendocrinology, repreproduction, or molecular endocrinology, this is a must read.

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy Pepsi.
I like this book because it's a learning tool that gave me exactly what I was looking for. I was tired of looking through Make-up effect books that had two pages devoted to doing horror effects. Stephen King and George Romero (or just horror in general) will really enjoy this book. As will make-up effect artist.

Awesome book, Great for FX students & fans
This book is a manual for every horror fan, FX student, and lover of Savini around. I was lucky enough to get a copy of this from my schools bookstore, and might i say, what a find! Explained in gory detail, every effect is uncovered. The book has many hpotos, most in black in white, some in nice bloody color! Lots to look at, and plently to read about, this book is THE BEST! Even if your not into special FX, I'm sure you've seen the horror movies he's done, and its worth reading to find out how this talented man created these effects.

Great book for special effects fans.
A mistake was made during my recent review on this book.Instead of me giving it a 5 star review like I intended,I gave it 1.I am correcting this mistake and I am giving it 5 stars. It deserves it.

Must Read
Wonderfully informative & warmly inspirational; professionally written, and with a great deal of love; a must read for anyone personally touched by or professionally involved in adoption

Real-life solutions
This book does a great job of telling the reader about what really happens in the adoptive process.

In my own family (2 adopted siblings), I know that if adopted kids' issues are not addressed in a healthy manner, the issues can become time bombs just waiting to explode. I wish my parents had had access to this book when my siblings were younger. I think it would have helped both my parents and my siblings realize what was going on and how to address issues unique to the adoption process.

This book is not techie - it is very straightforward - like you're talking with someone over the dinner table.

Very helpful book...

Compulsory Resource for Adoptive Parents
This book is a must-read for all potential adoptive parents. You can't possibly know the questions to ask your adoptees as they go from babyhood through adolescence because you have no idea what they are thinking and feeling. This book will prepare you for anything and everything.

I am a birthmom of 39 years ago. I have met my son's adoptive parents. They are fine people who have raised him with all the right spiritual and moral values. I have sent this book to them and hope they will read and perhaps be able to understand and learn from it.

Barbara raised both adoptive and biological children so has seen life from their very different perspectives. She is truly able to advise and counsel on the experiences all families deal with in adoptive families.

Make Your Medicine Safe
Dr. Cohen has written a book that can help individuals avoid most probems with medications- while at the same time being sure to get the most benifit from the lowest dose of drug.

I have often had problems with medication in the past- and this book gave me a simple and clear technique for avoiding those problems.

Problems with drugs are responsible for more deaths each year than autos and guns combined- and most of those deaths can be avoided by using the simple plan given in "How To Make Your Medicin Safe"- I give it my highest rating!!!

Ask Dr. Cohen to be your 2nd opinion on all meds
Dr. Cohen's book is an excellent resource for doctors, patients and family members. The information is current and the writing is easy-to understand. At selfhypnosis.com we always recommend that people learn relaxation, meditation or selfhypnosis for the selfcare portion of their treatment. Of course, medicines are an important part of most conditions. I have been working in healthcare for over 20 years and Dr. Cohen's book is my #1 choice for people to be intelligent about what they are getting from the pharmacy for themselves or their family members. If you take medication, you need expert advice. We all need and will benefit from a 2nd opinion. My recommendation is Dr. Cohen and his book, Make Your Medicines Safe.

A highly informative book
I thought this book made a lot of sense. I finally understand why I have had so many problems with medication. I highly recommend this book for all physicians and the general public. This book is literally a lifesaver. Those people who have experienced side effects from medication will find this book invaluable.

Herb Contraindications And Drug Interactions, Second Edition
Published in Paperback by Eclectic Medical Publications (01 December, 1998)
Authors: Francis Brinker, Nancy Stodart, and N.D. Francis J. Brinker
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Useful reference on botanical safety
This book vastly improves on the 1st edition, which had some questionable listings of various herbs, the basis of which are now explained. Overall this book covers a lot of herbs in rational categories and references everything. I have used it as a textbook in my drug-herb interactions courses and students have consistently found it a handy reference. Excellent work from a true botanical scholar. The only flaw is a tendency to extrapolate too much from in vitro work while occasionally failing to cite relevant human literature, and a tendency to ignore beneficial interactions in favor of citing negative ones (understandable but it gives a somewhat false impression).

A must have to save your life
I know that my review title may seem dramatic, but I have personal knowledge of supplements endangering a loved one's life.
My sister-in-law's mother is extremely into natural supplements, BUT she would only read the gushing, wonderful benefits described by those who promote the supplements. She gave her 75 year-old husband a supplement, which in and of itself would be okay. BUT, the poor guy was on prescription medicine which adversely mixed with the simple supplement. He was admitted to hospital and was critical all due to the mix.

SO, IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE, ENSURE THAT YOU VERIFY THAT YOUR NATURAL SUPPLEMENT ARE NOT CONTRAINDICATED PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES.

This book is a LIFE-SAVER in that respect.

Valuable reference for both physician and home use
This is a much-needed and very usable reference for the health professional and educated lay person alike. While natural substances are generally very safe, it's important for both physician and patient to be aware that there are potentially serious effects from using certain herbals along with prescription drugs. As a Doctor of Naturopathy, I refer to this book often.

good for patients too!
This book is intended for physicians but I recommend it forPill-using women.(If you're the type who likes perusing PHYSICIANSDESK REFERENCE, you'll LOVE this. It's much more user-friendly.) The past nine editions(first published in 1977) have been popular with clinicians and the book is a kind of "secret weapon" in the drawer of many a student health service or family planning center. You come in with a certain health history or certain side effects from your current Pill, and the doctor peeks in here to see what brand of Pill to start you on or switch you to. For example, according to Dr. Dickey, if your breast size increases that might mean you have estrogen excess whereas continuous bleeding and spotting suggests an estrogen deficiency. On the other hand, progestin excess might be signaled by appetite increase, depression, fatique. So in theory your doctor relies on this publication for guidance on dosages and brands. It includes various kinds of useful information that you are unlikely to find elsewhere; for example, what kind of interactions occur with other drugs you might take, what symptoms of deficiencies of which vitamins and minerals to watch out for on the Pill, the relation of side effects to hormone content and how to distinguish symptoms of a potentially serious nature.Problem is the oral contraceptive manufacturers are so aggressive about promoting their brands, the doctors are so busy and distracted etc, that, for her own protection, its really a good idea for the OC user to familiarize HERSELF with Dr. Dickey's continuously updated material. Let's be realistic-- this drug is unlike others in that healthy women take it for the longterm,( not being pregnant is not a disease,) and while some may benefit from the Pill, others may be harmed. Some vigilance is called for. If a woman feels comfortable letting her doctor "do the worrying for her' - well, that's fine. But if she's not so sure about that, if she wants to learn this stuff for herself, here's a fine way to begin. I don't expect that the author will appreciate this review. He doesn't aim his manual at patients, but since he started writing and publishing it, the health care delivery system has been falling apart, fewer people can rely on trusted long-term doctors who know them well, and - like it or not- patients are often required to take healthcare decisions into our own hands. If every student health service has this publication, I say so should every women's dormitory at every college. Power to the people!

Managing Contraceptive Pill Patients - 11th ed. (2002)
An excellent reference guide and teaching text for every clinician who has a personal relationship with patients of reproductive age. The book fits in a lab coat pocket and has a unique design, which enables the user to find critical information quickly and easily. It is strongly recommended to physicians, residents, nurse practitioners and all other medical professionals in an OB/GYN clinic or teaching hospital. The 11th edition includes the new patch, ring and all new pills available 9/02.

For patients, not just doctors
As a pill user, I have found this book to be extremely valuable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who like to be informed about her own medical care. This offers enough information to allow you to be involved in decision making.
