OK first-generation book
Mentions or shows effects including the SansAmp Classic, Yamaha DG-1000 rackmount amp simulator guitar preamp, Roland VG-8, Rocktron Hush, Tube Driver distortion pedal, Morley JD10 D.I. distortion box.

Mentions using a guitar amp's FX loop on p 56, and the challenge of combining a preamp/processor with an amp on page 57.

Page 61-64 has valuable wisdom about testing used gear (I bought two pieces of gear that turned out to be broken).

There are no real amp tone tricks here -- nothing about pre-dist EQ, phaser before distortion, EQ and distortion interaction, and no mention of power attenuators or dummy loads, essential non-amp items in many rig processing chains of the 90s through the present.

This book is good, but makes all these standard mistakes of omission -- pedestrian and conventional; a decent inventory of the obvious, it won't help you dial in a basic amp tone voicing. It isn't really helpful in integrating effects into a practical foundation of amp tone, such as examining the fundamental chain of amp tone: pickup EQ, preamp distortion, amp EQ, power-tube distortion, power attenuator, speaker/mic EQ.

The distortion section says nothing about combining stages of distortion, or the relation between preamp distortion and power-tube distortion. It doesn't mention shaping distortion voicing by pre-distortion EQ. The EQ section says nothing about pre-distortion EQ versus post-distortion EQ; it says nothing but the totally obvious. The Phaser section says nothing about where phasing can be placed, before or after a distortion stage. Same with the Volume Pedal section.

These effects sections don't integrate the effect within a rig chain, but that's one of the most important things guitarists should know. It's rather obvious, by demoing pedals in the store, what each effect does on its own -- we really don't need a book for that, so in this sense, the book is superfluous and doesn't add value. The issue of effects order is covered in a vague and helpless way on page 71 -- "different pedals behave very differently depending on their order". Do people buy this book just to be told what they already know? No, they need specific advice, but the book doesn't have any, just "try it" -- tellingly, page 72 starts with an implicit admission of the lack of content in the book's main sections regarding effects placement: "Instead of letting you leave empty-handed, it only seemed fair to offer some old family recipes for the road."

The book is basic in the wrong way; it could have presented 80 pages of insight and tricks for integrating various processors with a distorting tube power amp, comparing different sequences, and showing how to manage the loudness problem. Instead, it's an inventory of the obvious. Let's hope the next generation of guitar effects books studies the better, more professional-level books such as The Recording Guitarist.

Bonehead's Guide to Effects
By far the most usefull tool in understanding and tuning up your multieffects. the only downfall, too short.

Very informative
I found alot of useful information. Especially in the business aspects of Concert Lighting. General History of concert lighting is very indepth. As for the art and techniques in the book, I found the book to be very basic. I'm not a lighting Designer. The only experience I have. Is hands on experience. This business is very secretive. This book has alot of the answers.

Fabulous!
"Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" is one of the most useful books on lighting. I have been a lighting designer for a few years now, and have read many many books on lighting, theater and concert. "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" goes into great depth for designing with intelligent lighting, as well as using fogs, hazzers and pars. "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" also gives great information on all companys from which to buy these items, and the many different ways to control them. "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" is a definite winner with my company and I. I will continue to refer "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" to all associates in my field, as well as in others.

Create Your Own Stage Effects
Another in the popular series of 'Create Your Own...' theatre books, Create Your Own Stage Effects is aimed primarily at the small scale or amateur level. The main theatrical effects topics are covered including lighting, sound and scenic effects, costume, fast changes, transformations, projection, make-up, properties, pyrotechnics, weather effects, fire, smoke and water, as well as historical and futuristic settings.

The effects are well covered from a practical standpoint with step by step instructions and safety measures. Budget considerations also feature, with many cost-effective and ingenious methods explored, though production values and professional results are not sacrificed to achieve this.

Like the other books in the series, Create Your Own Stage Effects offers a good foundation for the student or less experienced in an informal and accessible format that also lends itself well as a teaching aid. A useful and versatile book

A Invaluable Asset
This book gives easy, simple inexpensive ideas on designing and making really good quality effects for the stage. A must have in my collection.

COMPLEX AND DETAILED
These lectures were delivered at The Hague in 1913. In them, Steiner attempted to elucidate the modifications that the human being undergoes when practicing the exercises provided in his books Knowledge Of The Higher Worlds and Occult Science - An Outline. He thus goes into the minutest of detail in describing the physical changes, which includes becoming inwardly more mobile and more vitally alive. Different kinds of foods are also discussed. Lecture 3 deals with the etheric changes with special reference to the senses, whilst Lecture 4 deals with time and the seasons. Lecture 7 contains an interesting look at the Manichaean Bishop Faustinus, the 16th century personality Johannes Faust and Goethe's Faust. Lecture 8 deals with cosmic consciousness or the paradise imagination as Steiner calls it. He concludes with an encouragement to those pursuing esoteric development, that it is the right thing to do and in harmony with the evolution of the universe. I found the book to be very technical, detailed and a bit long-winded, perhaps because I do not understand all the terminology and references. I have the highest regard for this writer, but unless you're familiar with Theosophy this book will be difficult to read. Many of his other works are more accessible and digestible to the average reader.

Road map to the next stage in evolution.
It is of practical importantance to know in advance the effect that esoteric exercises will have on the souls of those who choose to practice them. This book could only have been written by a master, for it gives complex details of the spirual changes that can occur in the soul when exercises in esoteric development are practiced. It allows one to recognise when real changes are occuring, to trust them, and grow with them. This book can serve as a sure guide for the seeker in a world where true masters are in short supply. The descriptions are brillant in their completness and invaluable for those pursuing inner self-development. I am personally grateful that Dr. Steiner gave so much detail, making possible the journey of our spirit to its home a more sure one.

The term "decorative" as applied to paint techniques can have a number of meanings; in this case it refers to faux finishing. This book provides excellent coverage of the subject with demonstrations, step-by-step pictures, and instructions for 27 different techniques, from antiquing to verdigris and including combing, graining, pickling, tortoiseshell, and marbling, among others. Some interesting techniques covered here are not often seen in faux finishing books: imitation bamboo, sandstone and lichen, and something called sugi, an effect resembling charred wood used to age the look of a piece.

decorative painting
This is the first time that I bought a used book this way, I would do it again.

An excellent resource for faux finish techniques.
As a decorative painter, I use this book constantly to get ideas and practice techniques. I've found the step-by-step photos and explanations extremely helpful and clearer than in some other books on this topic. Also, the specific methods used here are interesting to compare to those demonstrated in other books on faux finishing -- especially the malachite look. I appreciate the fact that the authors use generic color names rather than commercial manufacturers' names (e.g. burnt sienna instead of "dried pumpkin"). Sometimes, though, I've had to slightly adjust the colors I use to achieve the "right" effect. And I do wish it included a more comprehensive assortment of finishes and effects. (Do the authors have plans for a second volume?) But, all in all, it's a great book and easy to follow for both professional and amateur alike. I'm glad it's in my library.

The definitive version is yet to come...
Being a big fan of Ray Harryhausen, I bought this book back in the late 70's for $17.50 (a tidy sum at the time). Nothing else was available on Harryhausen, and the book was much appreciated. However, its pictures are mostly black and white, and there is not much to read or revealed by Harryhausen, who was still making films at the time.
Be aware: there are three different editions of the book, the last covers all Ray's films.
In April, "An Animated Life" will be released, with full color and lots of text. But if you see this in a used book store and it's not too expensive, pick it up. Even now it's considered a collector's item.

Ray Harryhausen is king of F/x!!!!!!!
Mr. Harryhausen, Thank you so much for a lifetime devoted to amazing special effects films. You are truly the MASTER of stop motion and I'm very happy that you've given us, your fans, this book.As a 34 year old male, I grew up watching your films on TV and to this day I am still amazed when Sinbad battles the Cyclops or Jason fights the skelletons or Talos the bronze giant comes to life. You have inspired me to take up film making and stop motion as a hobby and I'm hooked. In your films, your magic will live on long after Zeus has called you home and your legend will grow like one of the great greek mythologies.Thank you. Joe Allen

READ THIS BOOK
Five Years After tells the story of what happened to the welfare recipients who participated in the influential welfare-to-work experiments conducted by several states in the mid-1980s. The authors review the distinctive goals and procedures of evaluations performed in Arkansas, Baltimore, San Diego, and Virginia, and then examine five years of follow-up data to determine whether the initial positive impact on employment, earnings, and welfare costs held up over time. The results were surprisingly consistent. Low-cost programs that saved money by getting individuals into jobs quickly did little to reduce poverty in the long run. Only higher-cost educational programs enabled welfare recipients to hold down jobs successfully and stay off welfare.

Intelligent, but SO boring
I find Foucault's work REALLY interesting, and I enjoyed the prequel to this book (Power/Knowledge). But unless you are a grad student looking for material to incorporate into some rigorous research, this book is just downright boring. The Foucault Effect professionalizes Foucault: the contributors appropriate his general methodological approach and use it to generate rigorous studies of political economy and government. The work by Foucault presented in this book is needlessly wordy and obscure, and yet it lacks the brilliant iconoclasm that characterizes most of Foucault's other work. Here, Foucault performs such banal tasks as explaining how he separates one discipline from another in his analysis, and it's just not particularly interesting.

Some of the stuff about liberalism, capitalism, and normality is fairly intelligent, but all of the work here is just "scholarship." It's well-researched, it's detailed, but it's not courageous or groundbreaking. In The Foucault Effect, Foucault is colonized by the professionalism of academic "research," and tamed. The Foucault Effect is a book that celebrates the efficacy of criticism, and yet its critiques are for the most part about as interesting as a journal on organic chemistry.

Academic researchers ought to buy it. People who are just interested in Foucault shouldn't.

Foucault and clarity
This is a key text for any of us wrestling with the epistemological change which Foucault created in his own, earlier writing. The work on "governmentality",for example, expanded here into intelligible and practical context allows each researcher to use Foucault's vision to generate the methodological tools which he had deliberately avoided.Castel's analysis of 'normal' by itself makes this book worth owning because it is both a guide to Foucault's own philosophical progress and a set of practical extensions of his unrolling vision. Buy it!

Good but something was missing
I read the book. I agreed with all the points. I was properly impressed with his statistics and anecdotes. But overall I felt something was missing, although I can't put my finger on it. After reading this book, rather than feeling charged up to go and do something about it I felt rather ho-hum instead. I don't think the book is polemical enough. It doesn't offer clear cut guides on what needs to change. The threat is always vague, "We can't keep this up or someday we'll run out." His discussion of the necessity of growth left me unconvinced, even though I desperately wanted to be convinced. The book is an interesting read, but it was just lacking something that kept it from being amazing.

Brilliant and informative evaluation of the consumer society
Has it ever occurred to you that Americans go to shopping malls more often than they attend church or synagogue? Did you know that, directly or indirectly, we consume our own weight in basic resources EVERY DAY? Half a billion people--those who belong to the consumer society--use up almost all of the world's resources and create most of the pollution. This is one of those books that leaves a lasting impression upon the way you perceive the society you live in. This book is not only a smooth read, but is PACKED with carefully researched information in a most wonderful way. Durning backs up all his statements with solid facts. What else would you expect from a senior researcher at the Worldwatch Institute? And aside from the conscientious fact-checking, Durning has another Worldwatch habit: he not only presents complex problems in understandable ways, but also presents multi-pronged, workable solutions. Overall, a concise book chock full of careful thinking.

Human Impact on Ancient Environments

Great ideas, long time getting there
Redman makes a very good point in this novel that should be realized by all, and makes it clear that going back to the new-age hyped "natural" way of living that humanity possesed before contact with the evil Europeans means breaking apart important characteristics of human nature (though he does show that such a way of living is possible and has been done). Yet the amount of time he takes to make his point clear, and the amount of needless background information he includes, makes this book a very tedious read. I recommend this book only to those who have a deep and motivating curiosity about humanity's impact on the world. (Tree huggers, this is a book for you)

Last Train To Jupiter
Of the 25 books I've read in the past year this is the one that will have the most lasting impact. The dominant media factions would have us believe that all native people before European contact lived in pristine eco-edens ruled by peaceful matriarichies, with no toll taken on their habitat. Guess again! Hundreds developed sustainable relationships...but thousands were horribly destructive. "Humans have had a role in transforming virtually every environment and locale on this earth"-(fact) no matter which continent they inhabited. If we as a species don't learn from our mistakes of the past...we'd better find another planet to relocate to.
