The Entropy Effect

The Trouble with Time Travel
Stories revolving around time travel are difficult to review. The Entropy Effect is an exciting novel to read, and it captures the feel of Star Trek, but in the end, the story is rendered meaningless because it takes place in a timeline that has to be corrected. I suppose you could compare this work to the Deep Space Nine: Millennium Saga, though I preferred that series immensely. Still, The Entropy Effect is a fast-paced story that keeps your attention, and if you enjoy stories about time travel and alternate timelines, it's probably worth your time.

Not a bad time travel story even if it is a bit "played out"
Different versions of the "evil scientist" antagonist are traveling through time doing both evil and good, trying to both harm and to protect. It is up to Kirk & Co. (mostly Spock) to set things right. Although there are some problems with the story - most notably a bad characterization of Mr. Scott (I doubt he would be so quick to take sides against Kirk & Co.) - it does have its moments. In particular, the interplay between Spock and McCoy, the subplot involving Mr. Sulu, the characterizations of the security personnel and the Captain Hunter character.

An excellent Classic Star Trek time-paradox story
This story is a classic time paradox in the true spirit of Classic Star Trek. Strange events occur on the starship USS Enterprise which result in a crazed Professor killing Captain James T. Kirk! First Officer Spock investigates this tragedy & uncovers an experiment that threatens to unravel the very fabric of the universe. He must, therefore, put his own life at stake to save the universe, & his friend, Captain Kirk, by travelling through time using the same experiment, attempting to repair, & prevent, the damage from occuring!

Compared with Photoshop Type Magic 2,this one is not useful
What I learn from this book is very little. You can only learn 2 to 3 methods to make your web photos more beautiful. This book is not suitable for expert user.

How Did They Do That...?
If you ever wanted to know how to achieve an effect and saving a lot of time, this a great book to start with. I would highly recommend it. Photoshop Textures is interesting too, but this one before that.

Exelent book
This book teaches you a lot, and although the explanations are made to make you think hard you wont regret it. Exelent!

Excellent, contents information on seismic isolation
I read it when developing a research on seismic isolation. It was very usefull and helped me on getting basic concepts of seismic design and related topics.

A thorough discussion on seismic design of various bldg mat.
This is not a review but a request for clarification. I was told that this book was revised and updated to include recent changes required in building codes. The latest printing should be 2nd. edition of the 1996. Is this correct and what will be the change of cost. Can you please confirm. Thank you. Yours truly, Chris.

What is true?
I have read many serotonin-related books and I am quite confused. In his book "Beyond Prozac" Michael J. Norden, an eminent Psychiatrist, states that the much-publicized high-carbohydrate diet may actually make you depressed and overweight. In "Potatoes not Prozac" a high-carb plus protein diet is advocated. Dr. Joel Robertson in his "Natural Prozac" states that protein is a dopamine booster. Who should one believe? What is true and what is not? Should one accept Dr. Wurtman's approach as correct? O.K. she is an M.I.T. professor but the other authors have impressive academic credentials as well.

I Don't Binge Anymore!
This book has completely turned my life around. I thought my bingeing on carbs was simply a matter of willpower. After reading this book, I now understand the biological reason for it. My body was screaming for Seritonin. This book explains how to enable your body to create more seritonin without bingeing. With more seritonin, i no longer have the desire to binge. The author Judith Wurtman does an excellent job of explaining why we get uncontrollable cravings and how to qual them. She also does a great job in explaining why the 'Low Carb Diets' only make you crave carbs more. Thank God for this book. It's helped me understand how your body works and why it craves certain things at different times. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Finally...a system that works!
I have been using this book's recommendations religiously since August, and I've lost thirteen pounds. This is the only diet I've ever been on that has enabled me to exercise at the same time, and not become terribly depressed. The only other way I could lose weight was with diet pills, and then I couldn't exercise because I didn't have the energy. It fits my eating patterns perfectly, and I have not had any near-fainting episodes from low blood sugar in months. I also have suffered from mild obsessive-compulsiveness in the past; I believe that this diet helps control that, too. I take vitamins, fatty acids, and kava kava in addition to this diet, and I am telling everyone I know about it. Thanks so much for all your research. I would like to see a sequel with a maintenance diet plan.

This book provided an overall view of glutamine benefits
If you are looking for a general book on glutamine this is your book. It did a good job of explaining the general benefits and processes of action of glutamine. However, I was looking for a little more depth on the chemistry and physiology behind glutamine. If this is what you are looking for do not buy this book. If you just want a general layman's description; I would recommend it.

Non-essential...HA, don't believe it.
Shabert and Erlich do a great job of explaining how this little amino acid is sooooo essential. They are brave to include in their title the words "non-essential" because some people don't read thoroughly and might miss out on a good, thorough explanation of how important this glutamine really is. After gaining a better understanding via this book, I did a search on-line for someplace that sold the product. I found iHerb to offer the best service and several choices of glutamine. Now, I am including glutamine in my diet for more balance in my amino-acid intake.

Glutamine, Plain and simple
This book does not try to complicated, and for the average person trying to learn about Glutamine, this is an excellent book. It is simple and to the point, but with lots of reference to back it up. I think anyone would be happy with it.

I used 3D Studio several years ago and wish I had owned this book then! It is a wonderful book and CD-ROM of special effects: loads of animated and still maps, cyclical light and atmospheric animation, startup files of maps, meshes, and other project files, and utilities (and a much more handsome book cover than our scan would suggest). Highly Recommended.

Good Book
This a good book for beginner and experienced users. You can learn a lot of new effects and how to use some new IPAS.

Opens New Vistas
As a professional animator I have always been interested in new ways to achieve particular special effects. This book has given me just what I want. Besides the excellent tutorials the book offers some great textures and object files on CD. But what I appreciate the most is the comprehensive approach to each effect, sometimes providing a whole new look into the power of the software itself. Be it faking refractions and coloured shadows, or cattails swaying in the wind, this book takes ample care of them all. Only if some tutorials were a little more detailed. Highly recommended

Feel better, the natural way
This little book deal with the natural alternative to anti-depressants like Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil. This is the amino acid 5-hydroxitryptophan which increases the availability of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Whereas the drugs work by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, 5-HTP raises serotonin levels in a natural way and therefore has fewer and less severe side effects.

The authors cite various clinical studies to show that 5-HTP may be helpful in relieving depression, alleviating anxiety, panic and obsessive-compulsive disorder, reducing the pain of migraine and fibromyalgia, improving sleep and suppressing appetite. There is also preliminary evidence that 5-HTP may be useful for treating the discomfort of PMS and for reducing aggression. The authors also discuss the safety concerns of taking this amino acid, its drug interactions and provide dosing guidelines.

There is growing evidence of the efficacy of a variety of natural substances in the above conditions; these include the amino acids L-Tyrosine, DL-Phenylalanine and Tryptophan. One drawback of the book is that the authors only discuss Tryptophan in some detail and make cursory references to the herb St. John's Wort, while other natural substances like Trimethylglycine, Essential Fatty Acids and Acetyl-L-Carnitine are also showing great promise.

The booklet nevertheless contains valuable information and serves to introduce this natural anti-depressant to a wider audience. For a more comprehensive look at all of the aforementioned and other nutrients, I recommend Ray Sahelian's book Mind Boosters: A Guide To Natural Supplements That Enhance Your Mind, Memory And Mood.

Enlightening Info. about 5-HTP!
I found this book to be invaluable. I had been on lots and lots of antidepressant medications and none of them worked for very long, nor without side-effects(in some cases the benefits didn't outweigh the side-effects). This book gave me HOPE! with no side-effects! I now take 5-HTP daily and feel much better.

Very good, but....
AE 6 is a revolution from 5.5, and I've only had it two days. This book is very well written and presented, and the examples and the project it has you create give a really good overview of the program.
BUT... Sadly, it barely touches on any of the amazing new capabilities of the program and is therefore pretty much redundant for experienced users. Far more useful and informative are the help files within the program itself - tutorials and examples of the new functions. I'd recommend this for new users only.

A thorough tutorial of the After Effects software.
A tutorial driven book whereas the student completes 11 lessons total with the end goal of creating an 18 second movie playable for either television or web. (Note: This book is compatible with either the "Macintosh" or Windows" version.)

These lessons are presented in a procedure-like fashion so ultimately the student learns this program with his or her "hands" rather than by verbal instruction or explanation. Each lesson is thorough and complete in teaching the student how to import various formats, manipulate them, animate, transform and composite them into a coherent animation. Also covered are lens flare effects, text effects, and adjusting live action footage. Ultimately, this book is quite competent in teaching all of the above in a step-by-step manner. Each lesson takes about a half-hour to an hour to do so if you are motivated you can burn through this entire book in a fast weekend.

My animation experience is primarily with Macromedia FLASH so I figured that when I opened up the "After Effects" manual it would all come to me in a "whooshing epiphany". This was not the case since "After Effects" is quite rich in content and complexity and it requires lots of practice and detail driven tutorials to really grasp this program. Subsequently, this book provided me with the understanding and tutorials I needed to really learn this program

The Shell Scott Effect
Shell Scott, the hard-nosed P.I. created by Richard S. Prather, tackled crime and solved mysteries throughout the 50s and 60s and through part of the 70s. After about a ten year absence Prather returned to the character that made him famous in a couple more novels, of which "The Amber Effect" is one. Scott finds himself involved in a case involving conspiracy and murder, that all begins when a naked woman turns up at his apartment. Nothing much has changed for Scott. He's still the same lovable big lug that he was in the earlier novels but this time Prather has provided him with a 1980s type crime to solve. Like earlier adventures, Scott is involved with a beautiful dame and there is a fair amount of leering sexism in the writing. To some degree it's anachronistic and no longer PC. This type of private investigator story belonged in the 40s and 50s. What sets the world of Shell Scott apart from his contemporaries however is the first person narrative with a tongue planted firmly in it's cheek. Shell Scott is a funny guy. Funny not just because of the predicaments he finds himself in but how he relates them to the reader. Here's a story that twists a tale about a secret scientific invention with a "Miss Naked USA" contestant. Leering sexism it may be but it's written in such a light-hearted manner that you can't help but chuckle along with Scott's observations. Prather's writing never oversteps the mark and allows the reader to coast through a breezy mystery which will bring a smile to your face more than once.

In his time, Shell Scott was the best!
This is not really a review of this particular novel, but rather a general review of all of Richard S. Prather's novels concerning his detective, Shell Scott.

What a nice surprise to find that in 1987 some of his work was still being published. I first became aware of these novels back in the early '60s, and have collected every Shell Scott novel (I think every novel--over 50 of 'em). I cannot tell you how much Mr. Prather made me laugh through those 50 gems--to the point I had tears streaming from my eyes! Mr. Prather was one of the most popular detective writers of the era. He has a unique brand of writing that includes a keen sense of humor.

His protagonist, Shell Scott, an ex-marine, is sort of a klutz in many ways, but is an extremely engaging character nonetheless. Prather's actions scenes are all first-rate, he has a great sense of timing, and all his characters are well drawn.

Although my favorite genre is science fiction, it was Richard S. Prather who got me reading novels. And it is he, and his famous detective, that I will always have fond memories of. Thank you Mr. Prather. If you can find any of his work, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

So how do I rate these novels? This is difficult, since it was so long ago. But I wouldn't hesitate to give his best novels 8 out of 10, or his worst 7 out of 10.

Informative
This book helps give the reader an idea of what tools are at the disposal of Visual effects supervisors. Good read.

A huge amount of REAL information in here
This book is fantastic, it's really just a collection of interviews but the amount of information you'll find in here is staggering.

It does help if you have some background in effects or at least understand the terms used .. but as a digital artist i learnt masses about the physical processes.

worth it for the interview with Douglas Trumbull alone
