The best
An excellent, full color and clearly laid out guide to nearly every drug on the market today, illegal, recreational, and medicinal. Lots of photographs, quotes from people who have used the drugs, side effects, addiction and safety information, charts and graphs. This book was a help to me both for researching a book I was writing and for looking up the drugs my 89-year-old grandmother is taking for her pain.

I highly recommend this book.

Review for 3rd edition of same book, pub 1997
Note: I have not seen the newest edition - I borrowed the former (3rd) edition of this book (published 1997)...but it's SO good I'm contemplating the purchase of my own copy...but it's a GREAT book...I have paged through countless books of this and other types - this one is vastly superior to anyting else I've seen. It is complete and honest. Quite admirably, it is executed without a pro or anti-drug agenda, it is (in my opinion) a truly unbiased and informative work on the subject of psychoactive chemicals. It covers their history, use, effects, abuse, dependence, tolerance, and withdrawl.
The '97 edition was very well organized. It included all the right details - a skillful balance between completeness, efficiency in conveying the necessary details, and ease of reading (agreeably medium density material). It is a comprehensive work, suitable for both browsing and reference.

I haven't seen the newest, 4th edition (year 2000), but the 1997 edition was bettered in every way, by the inclusion of anonymous, convincing, informative accounts of recovering addicts. Those really shed light on the drug experience, lifestyle, highs and lows alike...it is very easy reading - Dr. Inaba (and his colleagues) have written an excellent work: informative, comprehensive, accessible, and entertaining (with tasteful humor).
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about psychoactive drugs and their many facets; whether you're trying to understand your teenager, experimenting yourself, or self-educating as a policy-analysis primer... this is the book for you.

Note: this book does not include information on the preparation of any "drugs", it is strictly an educational reference, not a drug user's guide.

It is a 10/10...

From An Addiction Counselor
This book was used as textbook in my addiction studies courses at Oxnard Community College, instructed by Bill Shilley. It is an excellent source of information. I bought it again to update info from the second edition I have.

In a word- GREAT!
As an independent film maker making the switch from 16mm to digital, this book has been indispensable. Not only does it show how to set up your studio, but also gives you estimates of the cost to step into this brave new world.
And what I found truly inspirational was the CD included with the QT movies of other independent animators. Seeing other people's work has always been the best motivation for doing my own. Thank you for putting this together to save us from time wasted trying to figure this out on our own.

A Complete Animator's Toolkit & Inspiring Teaching Tool
What I noticed immediately, then continued to admire throughout my reading of this book is that this little yellow book is very, very well written. I am impressed. I will use this book to teach my Animation I students, who will benefit from the history of independent animators the book provides, as well as the unbelievably detailed descriptions of the projects this animator completed. Subotnick fully describes what a digital animation studio (at home, or in the classroom) is comprised of, and describes the hardware and software tools animators may need. The book left me without questions! The CD-ROM is creative and of professional quality, and the animation clips on it show a good variety of work. This book was a welcome surprise, and an essential addition to my animation skills library!

The book I have been waiting for!
I am an animator who has worked in 16mm film and have been an animation instructor for children and adults for many years. I have been interested in computer animation, but found myself spending most of my time learning new computer programs rather than making animation. Then I would discover that the program I was trying to learn was difficult and not so useful for what I was trying to do.

Finally I have been saved! This book is exactly what I have been waiting for. Steve Subotnick has cut through the unwieldy morass of information to get down to the basics. His book is easy to hold, clearly and simply written, with pleasant, easy to look at drawings of equipment and procedures by Tim Miller, and some exquisite color pages of animaion stills from animators around the world.

This book takes you all the way through the processes of making an animated work and finishing it to a CD or Video which can be viewed by others. Steve saves you a lot of time by suggesting a limited amount of basic hardware and software which is flexible enough to do different types of animation, and inexpensive enough for many independent animators and schools to afford.

The book is inspirational for students and teachers in that Steve has listed outstanding films and videos, considered works of art by the international animation community. The book includes a CD with samples from these films and the end results of the simple exercises in the book. He starts each chapter with a brief quote from different animators.

The book is very enabling. Steve discusses how he and others get ideas and techniques. He encourages originality and creativity. He recommends that you "be yourself" in your animation work. I am using the book myself now and would recommend it to teachers, schools and everyone age 13 and up who is interested in learning to make animation on the computer.

Aspartame (Nutrasweet: Is It Safe?)

Must reading for anyone who uses a lot of aspartame
While there isn't a lot of overwhelming published evidence that aspartame is horribly bad for you, there is a lot of empirical evidence from many people that it can cause headaches, temporary memory loss and other sypmtoms. Just like MSG, many clinical studies have been done to show that it DOESN'T have any effect, but a negative study proves only that THAT study revealed nothing. However, I know several people who, when they eat these substances unawares, get plenty sick. So it can't be all imagination.

Along with Russell Blaylock's book Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills, this book is very useful to read for you to decide if you want to consume this artificial sweetner. There is even some evidence afloat that substituting diet sweetners doesn't actually lead to any appreciable weight loss, and that the mere taste of sweetness is interpreted by the brain as having EATEN a real sweet, and weight gain can occur. There are other concerns that aspartame and MSG have neurological effects.

Aspartame has crept into so many commercially prepared foods; even foods with sucrose sometimes have added aspartame. It's also found in vitamin drinks, gums and many other products. In fact it is getting darn hard to avoid.

In any case, there are fine alternatives to aspartame: if you are diabetic, you of course must limit carbohydrates, especially sweets. If you just substituting something for sugar because you are dieting, try substituting stevia extract (a sweet tasting herb found in some healthfood stores) or using a small amount of raw sugar or honey and just limiting your sweet intake. The less sweets you eat, the less you'll want, and you'll start to notice and enjoy the natural sweetness of fruits and even vegetables.

If you read this book, you'll also get a lot out of Blaylock's book on Excitotoxins. Both are essential reading to anyone who is concerned about their diet.

A MUST for anyone who uses Aspartame
Just how safe is the artificial sweetener aspartame (more commonly known as NutraSweet), currently used in many thousands of products and consumed by hundreds of millions of people? Readers may be surprised to learn that a number of common medical problems are actually adverse reactions to products containing aspartame. Author H. J. Roberts, MD, a board-certified internist with impressive credentials, first became suspicious of aspartame when he encountered an increasing number of patients with a wide variety of symptoms, like headaches, mood swings, memory loss, dizziness, depression, insomnia, diarrhea and anxiety, among others. Based in hundreds of case studies, Roberts concluded that these unexplained symptoms were actually reactions to products containing aspartame. The book not only looks at the clinical picture of aspartame, but describes how it received FDA approval without undergoing testing in humans and how the U.S. Senate allowed this well-financed chemical additive to receive government approval.

Anyone with health probs who ingest aspartame should read
Reading this book informed me about the health problems associated with aspartame. Most people conclude that headaches are the only side effect, but there are many more immediate and longer lasting effects. If you or anyone you love is suffering from unexplanable health problems, read this book and become informed about the real dangers that come with ingesting aspartame.

A Must Read for Every New Parent!
Being a new parent, I was worried when my 9 month old had a high fever and a cough that lasted more than a day. The doctor told me to keep my child comfortable and monitor his symptoms. If he did not improve in a few days, I was to call back. I felt helpless. I had collected numerous books about babies and what to expect the first year: but none of these books had the information I wanted to know such as how do I comfort a coughing baby at night. Breaking the Antibiotic Habit is wonderful. I read it from cover to cover the day it arrived. Now I am more confident that I can take care of my child when he is sick. I know what to watch for and can communicate better with my child's pediatrician.

Great Book!
I just happened to glimpse this book at my local library and checked it out. What an informational storehouse! I am the parent of two small children, who just recently have been coming down with coughs, colds, ear infections. Nowhere in any of my "pediatrition handbooks" did I get such an in depth understanding of common childhood problems and how and when antibiotics can help and when they can't. I wish I read this book last winter when I needed the information. I am buying this book and highly reccomend it to all parents. Read it cover to cover!

A must read for parents interested in using less antibiotics
I am a pediatrician and am extremely concerned about antibiotic overusage. This book will help all parents understand the risks and benefits of antibiotic use and give them a greater understanding of when antibiotics should be prescribed for their children. Learn that it is alright to tell your doctor that you'd rather not use medications if they are not absolutely necessary. This book is well written, easy to understand, and a must read for parents. Makes a great gift as well for a new parent! I recommend it highly.

Humes does it again
Once again, Humes has mastered the ability to "show" us the moments he's captured in this read. The simplicity of his seasoned writing is as delightful as a light sigh of relief.

A poetry of symbol, myth, and physical experience.
In Butterfly Effect, experienced poet Harry Humes draws on the landscape of his native mountains, moving fluidly between the world of physical experience and the world of symbol and myth. Gladiola Man: Each spring he'd plant acres of them,/and not one for sale,/every day weeding, loosening the soil,/fluttering over the spears,/then the big blossoms./He'd kneel, almost invisible/in the rows where we knew/he was talking to them,/sobbing when wind snapped a stem./Each October he'd cut them back./carry the sheaves to the fields' edges,/then dig up the bulbs,/gently life them out,/lay them side by side,/as if he were Leakey at Olduvai Gorge,/standing alone at evening,/fitting together dry silence.

A touching, unpretentious collection.
So many poets recently want to make huge declarations about life and art that they sound more like preacher-philosophers than skilled practitioners of the language of poetry. So it was refreshing to come across this gem--a subtle, quiet (yet not so quiet) celebration of the images and epiphanies that touch and affect our lives. A small book (in length) but one with astounding beauty and depth.

Kaplan Review
I think this book is wonderful. It is probably the best source for information on anesthesia management of congenital heart diseases, perioperative management of ischemia and ventricular failure. It is a 1999 edition, so there are a few points which need to be updated in view of recent advances in both drugs and surgical procedures, but I would still recommend this book to all the prospective cardiac anesthesiologists.

The standard work in this field.
The interesting thing about this book is that it is read by everyone in the field of cardiac anesthesia. When discussing a subject, many people refer to what is written in this book, so you really need it! The book is easy to use because of the clear language and the modest amount of information on a subject.

I want to know the price of new edition of this book.
Please let me know about the availability of the fourth editionof kaplan book in India and the price.

Literally a lifesaving book.
Coenzyme Q10 (often abbreviated as CoQ10) is essential for human life. It catalyzes the formation and utilization of energy in every human cell. Fortunately, our bodies manufacture CoQ10. Unfortunately, some people do not manufacture enough CoQ10 to keep them healthy, especially as they grow older. Research has shown that deficiency of CoQ10 is the major cause of cardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure and these diseases can often be cured by CoQ10 supplementation. Even many heart transplant candidates have no longer needed a heart transplant after supplementation with CoQ10. Now it has been found that CoQ10 can also prevent -- and, sometimes, even cure -- cancer, as well a variety of other diseases. Dr. Stephen Sinatra -- a board-certified cardiologist -- is a world-renowned expert on CoQ10 and its health benefits. I beg your to buy and read this book and heed Dr. Sinatra's information and advice.

Aging? Try Co-Q 10
Again Sinatra has written an easily understood book. This one explains the body's need for additional enzymes to battle the effects that living in this busy, modern (and polluted) world. Co-Q 10 works with our immune system to rejuvinate our tissues. My father has been taking this enzyeme for his heart and is seeing improvement. It is becoming better known and discussed in the herbal/natural medicine circles. He buys his from a site, PapaNature, where he has had good service, additional information and other natural "medicines" as well. In fact, Sinatra's book is referred to there too.

A must for doctors and patients
This book has been a wonderful discovery. I think it's a must for doctors and patients, but especially for doctors as a starting point to develop alternative therapies. History has proved that conventional medicine is good but not enough. All-natural alternatives like this are the future of great health and a must for the aging. Five stars for sure!

They don't get much better than this!
Christopher Schink is a terrific teacher and communicator in this lovely, and invaluable instruction book. Complete with many colorful examples and exercises, this world-class painter uses work from many different exceptional painters, along with a few of his own, to show how wonderfully expressive your own work can be by utilizing some of these techniques. He also shows and shares his deep understanding of what happens to color as it's mixed and layered, etc. And at the bottom of it all is the message that painting is about communication of ideas, and not simply a series of techniques! This core message is the most valuable of all.

It's more that the typical 'technique' book
If you can only buy one water color text book, buy this one. For a change this painter focuses on teaching you more than just tecnical skills. He gives you excellent information on color history, and analysis of other watercolorists work. Deals with problems you may run into and provides great visual examples. Handles subjects like controlling pictoral space, simultaneous contrast, and well as composition and design. This is book to study, not just look at the pictures!

An Inspiration for Effects !
I found this book to be most interesting on the topics of Colour, Tone, etc. Mr Schink goes on to apply the initial principles he outlines at the beginning of his book, to show how different effects and appearances can be created, even from the same basic composition! It was a fascinating read, and provides a good point of reference for me.

Solid book that changed my beliefs in an afterlife
I was raised Catholic but by my teens had some serious doubts about the afterlife. As most of my friends agreed (they wanted tangible evidence) and the opposition disagreed (they didn't need tangible evidence), it was always a standstill type of argument.

After a few people died in my life though, I felt that the issue wasn't satisfying enough. So, I started to do some research not related to the Catholic Church, as the people I knew had convictions and didn't want to discuss WHAT IF questions.

What was great about this book were several things:

(1) He mentioned he did an NDE on children and retold over a hundred stories; I found it less likely children would be able to make stories up on the spot;

(2) No one has stepped forward to debunk the author so he must have at least got his evidence together correctly; and

(3) The NDEs were, again, over a hundred people, retelling their personal tales. They were from all over the USA with different backgrounds . .. and they had similiar experiences of seeing a light and feeling comforted and getting in touch with loved ones who had passed on.

So, this book has been the first step in helping me believe there is something after death, and I feel a lot better for it. For those who want something more heavy duty, you can also check out John Edward's CROSSING OVER, which airs every weekday in the mid afternoon. No one has really debunked that guy either so there has to be more to life than just death and oblivion.

The Transformative Effects of the NDE
I've read many books on Near Death experiences over the years. In fact, I have over twenty of them on the bookcase beside me as I write this. Yet, I keep coming back to this one volume (I believe that this is the third time that I've reread it.) The reason for this is that it is the most "scientific" of the studies available to the general reading public. One would expect this of a book written by a practicing medical doctor. It is scientific, yet it is objective- this is no deconstructionist hatchet job. It is a true research study conducted with impressive thoroughness. The results are presented in the text in non-technical, non-statistical language, though the full paper with all the statistical results is included in the appendix.

First of all, this Transformations study takes the existence of NDE's as a proven fact. The author's previous research with the near death experiences of children left no doubt as to that (see his_Closer to the Light_.) This book deals with the lasting, measurable effects of the near death experience on people who experienced it in childhood (less of a chance of popular culture contamination.) A comprehensive battery of tests were applied to both NDE survivors and control groups (Ellsworth Profile of Adaptation of Life Survey, Greyson Value Survey, Greyson Near-Death Experience Validity Scale, Templer Death Anxiety Scale, Reker-Peacock life Attitude Profile, Greyson Negative Near Death Experience Survey, Neppe Subjective Paranormal Events Questionnaire, Neppe Temporal Lobe Sensitivity Inventory, Etc.) In addition, the participants complete medical and psychiatric histories were examined, as was a survey of their complete lifestyle and personal history. This was a very comprehensive in-depth study of a type not attempted before or since.

The results showed that the NDE survivors had significantly lower death anxiety and a higher zest for life. Verifiable psychic ability was four times higher than the general public. There were also indications that long-term conventional intelligence increased as a result- as well as creativity increase. The anecdotal sketches also demonstrate especially clearly that humanitarian and altruistic behavior was nearly always at a high level as a result of exposure to "the Light."

Why should we care about such research? Well, it tends to comfort those who hear about it, especially the sick and dieing, even though they have not had the experience themselves. It also tends to drive home our interconnectiveness as human beings and the need to treat each other with fairness, justice, and respect. It refutes the mechanistic concept that life is without purpose or reward. Oh yes, there is also the fact that it is the objective, verifiable, truth....

Transformed by the Light
I just recently read this book and it shed light on what has happened to me in the past 15 years since my out of body experience.

I was transformed and went back to school; got my degree in therapeutic nutrition and have written & published four books. I have had a lot of help from beyond in writing these books, but Dr. Morse's book Transformed by the light has helped me cope with the changes in my life.

Thank you, Dr. Morse

Emphasizes the spiritual without discounting the methods
The Antioch Effect is a balanced church growth book, which emphasizes the spiritual condition of the church without discounting the importance of methods and strategy. Using the church of Antioch as his model church, Hemphill examines eight characteristics of an effective church. They are supernatural power, worship, prayer, leadership, fellowship, vision, evangelistic passion and discipleship. The book is written from the perspective of a Southern Baptist church consultant who combines the experience of both a practitioner and a consultant. At times I thought the book bogged down but it was worth the read. The Antioch Effect contains solid growth principles to learn and practical methods to implement.

Used As a Textbook in Seminary class
Dr. Hemphill's book is certainly valuable to pastors, college and seminary ministerial students. It was greatly accepted as a textbook for my class in church growth at Temple Baptist Seminary. All pastors who are interested in a Bible base for church growth will find this book very helpful.

An excellent book which focuses on biblical principles.
Hemphill has written an excellent book which focuses on biblical principles, not church growth strategies or techniques. This powerful book assists the reader to examine what kind of church has the power of God in it.
