Review of Radiation Protection in Medical Radiography
Having utilized Mary Alice Statkiewicz-Sherer's excellent text Radiation Protection in Medical Radiography through all three of her excellent editions I feel that I can well recommend this as not only a course level text book but an excellent review. The authors do not stand on the historic scare tactics of many others and yet cover this extensive topic with clarity and objectivity. My students have done well with this book as a text and study guide for the Radiation Protection section of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Radiographer examination. I find this is one of the only texts to cover the topic of radiation hormesis with truth and clarity that bespeaks the findings of the extensive double longitudinal study on radiographers performed by the University of Minnesota. With full knowledge as an educator of some 36 years I find this inexpensive paperback version excellent for student afordability.

This is a great reference for all types of questions regarding ionizing radiation. well written and easy to understand with excellent tables, graphs and illustrations.

common sense for adhd
I am the mother of Ben, who has had lots of labels...Adhd, Autism, PDD, brat. Somehow he has made it through to the fourth grade and basically is a bright kid.

Ben was languaged delayed and might not have made it in the regular classroom without ritalin because he was just out of control and I was clueless as to how to change. In earlier days, we literally had to "show" Ben how to talk, with pictures... he had to "see" it to understand it, as he didn't pick up language as most kids do. He was different from the beginning!!!

He is the most frustrating, and the most enjoyable of kids I have ever had the pleasure to love. But when it came to correction, I just believed I would have to spend the rest of my life ignoring his oppositionality. It was like I had no control...and just kept getting more and more frustrated, and giving more and more negative vibes off because I was just at my wits end. I don't like the idea of spanking or yelling at all, and it always just seemed to make matters worse. Ben took no responsibility for his behavior.

When I came across this book initially I ignored it because it was that crazy "anti-ritalin" crowd, or so I thought. You know, the "zealots". After having read it and applied it somewhat, I wonder if Dr. Stein hasn't serendipitously (sp?) come across a way to help our kids behave, in the same way Catherine Maurice's book helped provide me with a way to teach Ben language!! Hey, we're on this earth to help each other out!

I really do believe Ben has a difference that makes it hard to deal with some aspects of schooling. I don't recall anywhere in this book Dr. Stein saying that it's easy. But if I only give in and say, "He can't do it, he's handicapped..." am I really helping him? It isn't a matter of ritalin or not...what this book forces you to think about is how we as parents unfortunately handicap our children by having such low expectations of them.

How can a form of discipline that includes no yelling or spanking, no belittlement; that encourages positive behavior and encourages thinking of the consequences of actions beforehand; that requires us as parents to refuse to see our children as handicapped and to enrich their lives and show them unconditional love, be bad?

Got me....

(...)

Skip the drugs and the psychiatrist. Read this book first!
Did you know that there is no scientific test for the presence of ADD/ADHD? According to Dr. Stein that's because ADD/ADHD is NOT the epidemic biological/chemical/genetic/dietary disease that today's popular medicine would have us believe. It's what grade schools used to call poor conduct, and it can be corrected with a two-pronged, drug-free approach: increase praise to reward good conduct and use boredom--what I refer to as "Time Out on Steroids"--to correct bad conduct. The book includes a simple, well-reasoned explanation of what Dr. Stein believes causes kids to be inattentive (IA) and highly misbehaving (HM). More importantly for parents like me it includes a detailed, step by step, VERY PRACTICAL program for working with an IA/HM child in a broad variety of settings (e.g. at home, at a store, in the car). He calls this the Caregivers Skills Program (CSP).

The key to the CSP is that it helps the child understand that it's to his benefit to think...think about the consequences of his actions, think about the rules, think about the feelings of others, etc. This book is surprisingly short for the importance of its subject, reads very quickly, is down to earth and to-the-point. Dr. Stein includes just the right amount of the theories behind the CSP so parents can build on the specifics in the CSP to handle other situations not specifically covered by the book.

If you're considering resorting to drugs or professional counseling to try and help a child you suspect might be ADD/ADHD, you owe it to the child and yourself to read this book first.

Sleepers, Wake!

Future directions for information based economies
Barry Jones's thesis about revolutionary changes in the labour force, Sleepers, Wake! was originally published in 1982 and is now in its fourth edition. Jones explores the impact and future implications of the Information technology revolution on the labour market and society in general. The very fact that this book has endured the test of time provides a good indication as to the strength of Jones's analysis. An immensely stimulating and thought provoking read

Impact of Changing Technology on Employment
This book discusses the links between technological change and employment levels in developed countries, with an emphasis on Australia. Barry Jones introduces a five-part economic analysis to assist analysis of employment levels, as well as a good analysis of historical impacts of technology. The book also delves into the question of what we will do when the need to work declines as technology displaces more workers. Written in a very erudite style, with thorough referencing. A book everyone should read if they are at all concerned about having to work for a living. Now available in a 4th edition, which you should look at for the latest data.

An excellent beginners guide to Sound in Theatre
This book takes you through the basics of how to analize theatre from a sound perspective. It gives examples of system diagrams, run sheets, a sound plot, and includes a glossary of terms. Very insightful for the beginning sound designer!

A valuable investment
A great introduction to the world of sound design for the theatre. Not only does it have a chapter on the history and evolution of sound design but it also has a chapter on experiences of sound designers - on how they deal with their work. The excerpts of designers' ideas and comments on a particular concept was very enriching. Add to that, it's an easy-to-read book. Being a sound designer myself, I could say I could relate a lot to their experiences. I highly recommend this book to theatre students taking up sound (design) courses or who wish to try their hands on the field. I personally learned a lot from this book and I have to say this is a valuable investment.

Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on Mind, Body, and Society

State of the art in Traumatic sSress
Van der Kolk, McFarlane and Weisarth are world leaders on the nature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this volume they bring together a wide range of authors to present the historical development of and current approaches to the treatment of the ongoing effects of traumatic experience. There are 25 chapters which address the historical developments, acute reactions to and adaptation to trauma, the mechanisms of memory, social and cultural issues and, most importantly, treatment. Recent developments in treatment are critically reviewed, including reference to the popular Eye Movement Desensitisation, but Thought Field Therapy is too new to be included. This is not a book for those looking for 'quick fix' solutions or a 'how to' manual for the treatment of trauma. Rather it provides serious theoretical and research perspectives that might underpin professional practice. In this sense it is a fair representation of the state of knowledge on PTSD, a concept which provides a window for viewing and treating the effects of exposure to trauma. Having explored the current state of clinical knowledge however, the editors acknowledge that there are 'aspects of the experience of trauma that cannot be captured in medical and scientific models' and argue that 'in reality people are left to grapple with the human dimensions of traumatic experience'. They conclude that 'beneath the tidiness of emotional distancing and scientific classification lie the human vitality and energy to struggle against, and to create meaning out of, what appears to be random cruelty and fate'. The reader is left to ponder what the role of the researcher and clinician is in challenging the conditions and social contexts of the tragedy and violence that we observe daily in our world. If there is any criticism, the text could perhaps have been grounded in more case presentations that would allow the reader an insight into the complex process of grappling with and unravelling the experience of trauma and its consequences.

A must have for Intl field work with trauma
I recently worked with Kosovar refugees in Montenegro during the war in Kosovo and found this book to be invaluable in my efforts to determine what has been shown to work in the field and how to conceptualize the staging of interventions needed within a cultural context. I highly recommend this book to anyone working with trauma that results from ethno-political warfare.

Informative, eye-opening view of the psychedelic experience
Huston and Masters give a well detailed and extremely fair minded account of the psychedelic experience, primarily via LSD sessions that were recorded by observers who were trained in psychology. The book covers the myriad aspects of "the trip" from perceptions of the human body to the deep religious experience.

The book is somewhat more scholarly than the works of someone like Timothy Leary but this is what is needed if this movement is to ever regain its legitimacy in the eyes of the general public. While it does not condone the illegal use of the drugs, it decries their suppression and the utter halt of legitimate research into these fascinating and important substances. Read it with an open mind, but remember that the drugs are illegal and therefore also potentially dangerous. That aside, the book will almost certainly spark your curiousity.

Best Ever Work About The Psychedelic Experience
Brand new re-issue of the classic 1966 work.

If "The Doors Of Perception" was the most important work on psychedelics because of its influence, this then is by far the greatest because of its impeccable research, its far-ranging implications and its clear, lucid and compelling putting together of the evidence for the remarkable therapeutic and consciousness-illuminating value of LSD and other psychedelics (principally peyote). They don't, however, proselitize, and this is much to their credit. In fact, they go to some lengths to inform the reader that an active pro-drugs "for the sake of drugs" mindset is fraught with peril, and do so in a way that is both impartial and learned.

They're at their best, however, in their extraordinary recounting of the psychedelic experiences they conducted themselves as guides. There are so many instances where the subject, usually a person with a very intense psychological or emotional problem, arrived at a life-changing breakthrough, that it lingers long in the mind.

But the book is most of all a primer for their very lucid theory of the psychedelic experience and its various stages or levels. It is, in fact, so well thought out and explained, that this reviewer wonders why it had so little impact on the great body of psychedelic research, even after all these years. To me, it is the only theory that makes any sense and it's also the only one that could be used in a therapeutic setting so that the chances of errors or mistakes in guidance be effectively minimized.

Effective presentation of the views of ordinary Amazonians.
This book does a fine job of letting the ordinary men & women of Brazilian Amazonia speak for themselves. While it does not have the analytical or scholarly depth of some other books on the subject (e.g. Hecht & Cockburn's "Fate of the Forest"), its strength comes from the author's ability to listen to the people she meets. For both the general public & college undergraduates, it is a handy & accessible introduction to issues of environment & development in Latin America. It definitely stimulated discussions in my course on Global Environmental History, & it would work equally well in courses on Modern Latin America.

Brazilian peoples fighting to survive in the AMAZON
This very readable and well researched book explains the daily struggles of the people who actually live in the rainforest: the Indians, the rubber tappers, the loggers, the ranchers, the miners, and the river people. The author traveled across the vast Amazon areas to talk with the forest people and hear their stories. This book is very moving because it offers a real insight into the lives of the people that are suffering them most from the destruction of the rainforest. That the forest peoples trusted Ms. Lebreton is wonderful, and the stories they share are truly fascinating. Kudos to LeBreton for making the somewhat dangerous trek across the country of Brazil so that readers could have an accurate and honest view of the problems that plague the area.

Good Book, Good Look
Great book about nature and how humans impact their environment. It tells of Jonathan London's kayaking trips around the world, and of all the animals he has come acrossed on the way. He gives each animal a mind of its own. I would definatly recommend this book.

Definitely two thumbs up!
The message the story subtly tells is wonderful and my campers loved the personalities of the animals. This is a wonderful book to start off a lesson about the delicacy of nature and our relationship to it.

These projects work!
I found the instructions in this project book to be extremely useful and easy to follow. My wife and I have completed most of the projects with great results. Great Christmas gift for the home crafter! I gave a copy to my sister and she was able to transform her 60's rancher into a sanctuary.

Easy education; impressive results.
I had no idea I was so creative. Weekend projects not only added value to our [] starter home, they saved my marriage (and my wallet!) I am anticipating more great ideas and simple tips from Ennis and would gladly pay double for another book if it means more home equity in the future. Thanks for sparking my interest in home renovation.

Windows on the Workplace: Computers, Jobs and the Organization of Office Work in the Late Twentieth Century
Published in Hardcover by Monthly Review Press (August, 1995)
Author: Joan Greenbaum
Amazon base price: $26.00
Used price: $43.34
Average review score:

how heads and hands have been seperated in the workplace
Using case studies and insightful analysis Greenbaum not only looks at the way that corporations have seperated "brain work" from "hands work" but also how this is part of a much more widespread, cartesian philosophy of seperating thinking from doing, thought form experience.

As a programmer as well as a social scientist, Greenbaum is able to deliver some powerful Psychological and Sociological observations grounded in first-hand experience, her own and those of the people she interviewed.

Beyond being digital
Joan Greenbaum's insightful exploration of the postindustrial present contains little of the techno-euphoria that characterizes so much of the contemporary literature in the "technology/economics" genre. Greenbaum uses hers skills as an observer to see beyond the tall tales of how high technology shall improve our workplaces and our life worlds, and instead tells the harsh story of the economic realities that lie behind such emerging work patterns as telecommuting, middle management downsizing and ephemeral employment.

Being securely grounded in hard data and contextual observation, "Windows on the workplace" is a boon for researchers that are tired of speculation and hungry for facts, and a real eye-opener for blue and white collar rank and file who want to understand what they really are up to in the office of the future
