Excellent book but...
Great insights and practicle information. Written by a psychology professor who gives short stories about people who have gone through the problem of job loss. The only problem is that he has never experienced the problem as far as I can tell. I also read A Guide to Coping with Job Loss for Smarties:the emotional aspects of job loss and found it more beneficial. It was written by someone who has first hand experience at getting laid off. He was laid off, I think six times in over 20 years. He also got a lot of information from his web site that has a discussion group on it about other people. www.joblayoffsupport.com. It made me think a lot. Some info is technical but understandable with examples.

This book gives the reader a sense of focus.
Ann Stearns is a wonderful writer i feel as if she is writing from her heart. She gives an understanding of living through this horrible ordeal. Her book should be an inspireration to all of us. Stearns warmth makes reading the book so much more interesting

Fascinating--but obsolete
If you're a student of magic, technical theatre, or trick photography, this is an excellent historical text on how these things were done about 100 years ago. It's a fascinating period piece, and a limited amount of the material can be updated and applied to a modern setting, but much of the illusions it describes require gas lines, steam lines, and other non-standard stage accessories.

An armchair read of special effects
While this book may not have direct application, it still remains on of my favorite titles in my magic library. It discusses how larger effects are accomplished, from temple doors that open automatically, to photographic illusions. The material is dated, but can be cleverly adapted for performances.

Milestones in Mass Communication Research: Media Effects
Published in Paperback by Longman Publishing Group (January, 1983)
Authors: Shearon Lowery and Melvin L. DeFleur

Informative
This scholarly roadmap shows the path that has been taken by various writers from myriad perspectives. The milestone analogy is taken from ancient Roman times as a distance indication to travelers. This book seeks to do the same thing for mass communication scholars.

Chronologically various researchers and key projects are discussed and placed in historical context. Different elements of the communication model have been emphasized at various times in history. Furthermore, various media have been highlighted during different eras, e.g., sometimes film, other times radio, then later television.

This book provides an insightful overview of the field's development. Anyone interested in the cumulative growth of media studies as an academic area will find the plot to the story in this textbook.

An excellent summary text - good chronological review.
I have been using this text for a number of years in undergraduate classes. It provides both an historical perspective to mass communication and a review of communication research methods. It can also be used to introduce students to mass communication theory.

Excellent topic but eventually changing into a brochure
The book starts on a very informative manner but eventually changes into a brochure for a nutritional product. The information is greatly needed by people suffering from low energy and related problems. Brochures should be send free of charge or be clearly indicated as such. Of the 48 pages, from pages 13 onwards is a straight brochure. The author succeeds to highlight the importance of a very much needed topic. The book "Dreams for Fragile People" by Steyn and Verwey (1998) also deals about the importance of NAD and energy related concepts. The topic of biochemical energy is extended to include the psychological, intellectual and spiritual value of energy to mankind in general. Both these books deals with information about NAD and the importance of this to the general public and more specific suffers from low energy and related disorders.

the most vital guide on the vital coenzme
what makes the body systems works and brakedown foods?enzymes.nadh is actually a coenzyme that explained wonderfully and readably the actions that he involved in the human body in digestion, hormones production, dimentia, altzheimer, energy enhancment, anti aging, and much more. the content in foods are also discovered, and a very specific guidence with nutrition explanation is explained too, after all it is a coenzyme that do accelerate metabolism, and a production of hormones, and their affects on celular metabolism, function, and cocognitive functions as well.sounds complicated, not in the way this guide is wrriten. buy this guide now!.

New Approaches to Macroeconomic Modeling : Evolutionary Stochastic Dynamics, Multiple Equilibria, and Externalities as Field Effects

A stimulating synthesis -- physics models of social systems
Can statistical physics methods be used to help understand and predict the behaviors of groups of people over time? Aoki, a well-known expert in optimal control theory and dynamic models applied to economic models, suggests that they can. This book offers an inspiring medley of technical ideas and probabilistic models -- based on analogies to spin glasses, self-organizing physical systems, and key ideas of statistical mechanics -- to make plausible the idea that behaviors of aggregates of rational actors, too, can be predicted statistically. (Enthusiasts of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, take note!)

The book is worth studying carefully for its ideas and models, even though its main thesis may not ultimately be convincing. It presents and illustrates modeling techniques that will be useful to marketing scientists and quantitative social scientists as well as to economists. A central idea is that individual behaviors can be represented by transitions among discrete choices or microstates, while the rates at which these transitions take place may depend on the frequency distribution of the whole population (and/or of local subpopulations)among microstates. The result is an adaptive process in which individual choices define the aggregate macrostate (i.e., the frequency distribution of individuals of various distinguished types among microstates), which in turn affects subsequent choices. Whether this adaptive process will reach any equilibrium, and, if so, which one and how and when, are principal concerns addressed through various well-analyzed models.

The techniques introduced and illustrated are primarily, partition function and stochastic process methods, including jump processes, diffusion processes, and martingale methods. Other ideas, from critical process theory, stochastic epidemics, large deviations, and maximum entropy econometrics and physics, are introduced and exploited where appropriate. The practical value of such methods to modelers cannot be denied. Aoki's main theme, that such techniques can be used to predict behaviors of populations of individuals, is not buttressed by any real applications. The models presented may be too simple to capture what many social scientists would consider essential real-world complexities, such as the generation of new player types and roles and the effects of boundaries and spatial distributions of resources and environments on populations over time. Nonetheless, the collection of ideas and methods presented, and the overall vision of a social science in which inter-individual heterogeneities and choices are accounted for by discrete transitions, makes this monograph exciting and valuable.

Note: Readers who enjoy this book may also want to read T.C. Schelling's Micromotives and Macrobehavior. Schelling's book is much less technical, but follows some of the same big ideas and applies them to many homely, compelling examples.

A Bridge over the Digital Divide...
David Thornburg... Ian Jukes and other Marshall McLuhan disciples of the Thornburg Center for Computer/Media structured Education in what's phrased the Telematic Age...continues to wage war against THE DIGITAL DIVIDE. This is the abyss separating computer illiterates and New Adepts who are comfortable with computers and understand what they're for(and not for). Buzz words abound in this newest statement from the premier prophet of VIRTUAL SCHOOL, "the school without walls" which employs computers to expand(transform)what he labels THE CAMPFIRE;THE WATERINGHOLE; and THE CAVE. "Campfire" is traditional aegis of the Knowledge Expert. The "Wateringhole" is where peers share and "intelligent" listeners hear. The CAVE is private place of genesis: where new ideas are conceptualized and epiphanies intially tested. None of these ideas are radically new (nor claimed as such). BUT: the electronic(cyberspace)approach to them is...and consequences are epoch framing.

The Computer is electronic Pandora's Box. Problems(and pseudo-problems)it creates(will create)are manifest...to those to whom it is "alien" entity. Thornburg hopefully proposes children be trained/educated to use computers (so that computers do NOT USE them)and become adept in THREE FOUNDATIONAL LEARNING SKILLS: finding information(this requires ability to contexualize mere "data"); determining relevance & asessing accuracy. The latter two judgement faculties cannot be memorized--either through "olden days" books or blind application of robotic protocols/algorithms--but they can be learned. And they have become essential to succeed(survive)in the Brave New World of New( "telematic")work...

Socrates'story of THE CAVE condemned masses of mankind to abject ignorance or bondage before shallow illusions. "EDUCATION" comes from Latin "ex...ducere": to lead-out of "ignorance"...into TRUTH. Dr.Thornburg may exaggerate in projecting an uneducable underclass(with disasterous socio-political, moral crises inevitably resulting). But he is urgently proposing well conceived programs in Computer Literacy(which must be preceded by radical intervention in traditional literacy: if you can't read a book, you'll never negotiate "spider" Webs). Two CAVES are posited: an old one of ignorance and a re-newed one of life long learning and opportunity. Each cave is on opposite side of The Digital Divide. David Thornburg's book is a narrow bridge explaining why this BRIDGE must be expanded and digitally crossed very, very soon.(4 and 1/2 stars)

Right on!
This book was exciting! I really resonated with everything the author had to say. He's right on in explaining the flaws in our schools, and some ways to overcome them. A must read for every teacher, administrator and parent!

Good projects but could be found elsewhere
I bought this book with 4 other books from Amazon because I already had another book by this author from a local bookshop. I liked her projects so I wanted to look at more projects from her. To my surprise the book I already had (Practiacal Home Paint Effects by the same publisher and author issued in 2001) is almost identical with this book. This book speaks about the materials used, then described the techniques and then the projects follow.
Also, all other books give instructions to mix paint with glaze, but she is mixing paint with wallpaper paste. Unless in the US this is something we do not have here, in my country wallpaper paste is a type of glue and I cannot understant for what it is used for.
The little book I already had is the same except that it does not describe in detail the techniques. Also it is much cheaper and is also available from Amazon. The decorating schemes presented are exactly the same. No new projects are presented.
So if you are looking for ideas buy the other book. If you want details by this one but DO NOT buy both.

a must have
I decided to paint my own kitchen cabinets using the faux finish style that is so attractive and popular today. In order to decide on the perfect method and style for my room I ordered 3 different books on painting finishes. I could have saved myself alot of money and just ordered this one book. It truly is the only book you will need for inspiration and direction. The pictures are large and the text is easy to understand and follow. Ms. Cohen has a classic on her hands that I reccommend to anyone who is interested in the art of faux finishing for the home. It is a must have for all at home art libraries.

Comprehensive but difficult to read
This is a very comprehensive and thorough textbook, recommended for graduate students in pharmacology programs, and NOT for medical students. It has good examples and covers a wide variety of topics in depth. However, the major drawback is that it is not written in the most "reader friendly" manner (i.e., have some coffee before you dive in). A fourth edition would be extremely welcome. Even minor layout and font changes would make a vast improvement.

The best book ever for molecular pharmacology
This book is a tough act to follow. It's not suitable for med students because it focuses more on how drugs act, rather than organizing the available drugs and how they act on a specific organ or system (e.g., the nervous sistem). If you need that, you'll probably need another great book: Goodman and Gilman's, that it's more suitable for med students. Pratt and Taylor's is written for chemists or for M.D. students that needs an in-depth cover of the molecular aspects of drug action: classification of receptor (biochemical, physiological, biophysical, etc), structure-activity relationships (QSAR), quantification of drug-receptor relationships, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. The chapter about metabolism of drugs is amazing: it covers every reaction involved in reactions of phase I and phase II, clearly explaining what and why happens. Also, it covers in full, but very clear, detail, aspects such as chemical mutagenesis, carcinogensis and teratogenesis. It works fine not only with pharmacology, but with Toxicology as well. Indeed, a great book. Highly recommended!

Trends in Neurosciences review
This book has received a highly favorable review by Jack Cooper in Trends in Neurosciences, vol. 20, number 11, page 544. I am looking forward to reading it myself.

A must-have reference for any neuroscientist.
This book contains a very thorough and in-depth review of every currently known neural transmitter system including synthesis, release, storage, receptors and pharmacology thereof, localization in the brain and relevance to clinical uses. Also included is a review of most drug classes and their interactions with various neurotransmitter systems. The figures in the book are particularly good, of above average detail and easy to understand. The reference section of cited papers is very useful for finding original research articles and data. I found the book to be a great resource for such diverse topics as neuroanatomy, pharmacology, neurotransmitters, action of drugs of abuse and mechanisms of schizophrenia and depression. The amount of information can be overwhelming and a few chapters are not as well-organized as could be, but the detailed glossary provides a very effective means of searching for almost any topic, or even specific chemicals mentioned in the book.

Enlightening, informative, detailed, hopeful
There are many "miracle cures" that are hyped to the public without giving any proof of how it should work, proof that it actually does work for real people, or guarantees if it doesn't work for you. Not so with Pycnogenol.

This book introduces the reader to the neglected world of nutrition and how it affects the body. It describes how our modern day diets negatively impact on our health, and how correcting our diets can reverse the negative effects.

There is no hype in this book. It is not the easiest reading because it has to refer to the language of nutrition, micro-biological functions and processes. However, for anyone motivated enough to learn how to avoid or reverse serious health challenges, the reading will prove extremely enlightening. "Knowledge is power!" certainly applies here.

In a few of it's chapters, the book describes commonly known diseases that afflict millions of people, and how Pycnogenol works to correct the bio-chemical conditions that induce the symptoms of the disease.

This book is small but powerful in providing the information that everyone should have to protect themselves against unnecessary health challenges, and avoid serious problems that impact their quality of life. It also offers hope to those struggling with non-germ diseases that there is a non-drug, no side effects way out.

the most informative-scientific book on the amazing pycnogen
