Provocative and insightful glimpse into earth's future
Although nearly 10 years old this book is a very readable popular science assessment of the plight of our planet. It provides a provocative view of the forces that will shape our environment in the 21st century. I was inspired to begin collecting information on climate change that might one day form the basis of book of my own.

The Next One Hundred Years
Although written more than 10 years ago, this book lays out in understandable terms to the non-professional scientist reader the foundation of the current global warming debate. Jonathan Weiner{winner of the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction for "The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time"}, gives compelling evidence that although a complex issue, global warming, climate change, ozone depletion, etc., are very real phenomena.

For those who wish to read more about the policy debate within government, NGO, and business circles; I recommend another Pulitzer Prize winner, Ross Gelbspan's "The Heat is On: The High Stakes Over Earth's Threatened Climate[1997]." I suggest reading Weiner's book first because it helps comprehend the jargon that professional science types tend to use.

"The Next One Hundred Years..." is Essential
Jonathan Weiner's book concerning the Earth and its biosphere and what is imperiled by the major increases in the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of natural resources is one of the most important books for Ecologists, Environmentalists and leaders from all walks of life to read. This book allows the layman with a rudimentary science background to grasp the fundamental scientific facts supporting global warming. It tries to cover many different indications of global warming, from air bubbles frozen for thousands of years in Antartica to ocean temperatures, ground temperatures, carbon monitoring, and many other points of evidence. It introduces one to the history of the exploration of this phenomenon, giving a kind of personal tour of each major discovery and what its implications are. It incorporates actual weather disasters such as the drought of 1988 and how it affected farmers, people, politicians and news reporting. It takes you on the scene to the places where atmospheric composition is being carefully monitored. It covers the full range of toxic gases and what their build up could mean in the future. Most importantly, it describes the interelationship between toxic gases and air polution. In general, it seems to have a more detailed view of global warming than other books on the same topic.
Finally, it leaves you with little doubt that time is running out, and something must be done, sooner rather than later. This book should not become out of print, and should be read by leaders the world over. It resolves the ambiguities surrounding the global warming controversy.

The essential roadmap to transform feminine consciousness.
Compelling and controversial new author, Alana Lyons, has unleashed her timely and praiseworthy new book, NOW IT'S OUR TURN, in hopes of creating a new spiritual, global consciousness while conveying a grave warning to the inhabitants of the feminine planet, Earth. The book, subtitled "How Women Can Transform Their Lives and Save the Planet", urges us to acknowledge the reality of what is happening (and has been for years) to women spiritually, socially, and policitally, and addresses these issues and the challenges they impose on us personally, as well as globally. As women, it is time to restore the balance of feminine energies--qualities of nurturing and connectedness--after thousands of years of patriarchal dominance, beginning with reestablishing our roles at home. NOW IT'S OUR TURN discloses the mass extinctions of life happening as you read these words, and offers individual and group solutions to creating the gender balance necessary to the survival of our global family. This wonderful resource should be required reading for all earthlings. -- Kaera Anzalone Magical Blend magazine November 1998

Important guidebook for creating gender balance.
Brilliant and thoughtfully woven, NOW IT'S OUR TURN calls women to use their power to restore balance in the web of life. With sobering accuracy, this well researched book views the consequences of male and female energy imbalance and provides exercises for women to make positive life changes. I highly recommend it! -- Barbara Brachi, co-founder Institute for Contemporary Shamanic Studies

A multifaceted view of all aspects of women's relationships.
NOW IT'S OUR TURN ignites the remembrance that women's true nature and identity are deeply connected to the Goddess and Mother Earth. Ms. Lyons assists us in reclaiming the wisdom of our Grand-mothers and provides practical tools needed to transform the destiny, not only of our own lives, but of our beloved Earth. This is a spiritually powerful book. -- Sherry McCoy, Sisterhood Bookstore, Los Angeles, CA

Paul Blaisdell, Monster Maker: A Biography of the B Movie Makeup and Special Effects Artist

long due respect for a forgotten monster maker
For those of you who don't know, Paul Blaisdell designed and built some of the most memorable movie monsters of the late fifties operating under incredible time constraints and a budget laughable even for American International Pictures. Remember the carrot creature from It Conquered the World? How about the pulpish titular antagonists from Invasion of the Saucer Men or the anatomically correct She Creature? While other special effects men of the time, such as Ray Harryhausen, went on to acclaim and respect in the Hollywood establishment Blaisdell was ignominiously fired upon asking for a little respect in an industry that treats its unknowns even worse than its shining stars. The only information available on the man has been from an old article in Cinefantastique magazine and in the reminiscences of his friend and champion, Bob Burns. This well researched biography can be seen as a celebration of a forgotten special effects man and as another cautionary tale of the Hollywood fringe (a great companion piece to the Ed Wood biography, The Nightmare of Ectasy). Some of his notable creations may be so for the wrong reasons but they had more heart than a good majority of the slick and forgettable monsters made these days. Mr. Palmer's book is a wonderful addition to the bookshelf of any fan of fantastic films and their creators.

Great stuff on a limited budget
Gives a great insight into Paul's work, in some cases you'd think you were there with him. The conditions that Paul worked under was amazing and his commitment and materials used.
His wicked sense of humour and support from his friends in this
then under exposed art of effects and monster making. Still think Technicians behind the scenes should get more support and recognition - grin. This book tops up your enthusiasm to do more

Thanks Randy!
Randy Palmer eloquently invokes the fun-loving spirit of Paul and his funky, renegade creations. Paul certainly was a rare breed; capable of creating fiercely original monsters under less than thankless conditions. Paul's monsters are as endearing as they are memorable, imbued with a soulfulness that few possess. Technique can be learned - imagination can't! Like most gifted artists Paul possessed this and met a tragic end. Randy Palmer sets the record straight and Paul is finally given his due. Randy's book is a MUST own for monster lovers/makers everywhere! A big "Beulah" thank you to Randy...and of course Paul.

good but not perfect
Yes, this book covers the important topics, and overall it is pretty readable, but I wish the editors had not felt compelled to convert every single mention of Grays into rads. For example, here is a passage from the book:

"In 1964, a 38-year-old man, working in a uranium-235 recovery plant, was involved in an accidental nuclear excursion. He received a total-body dose estimated to be about 88 Gy (8,800 rads) made up of 22 Gy (2,200 rads) of neutrons and 66 Gy (6,600 rads) of gamma-rays."

The whole book is like that. The mental intrusion of such frequent parenthetical remarks would be irritating enough in any text, but in this case the conversion from Grays and rads is by a multiple of ten and so the conversion is comically unnecessary. Presumably radiation oncologists, radiologists, and radiobiologists are bright enough to be able to multiply a number by 100 in their heads. It would suffice to state in the front of the book or in an appendix the relationship between Grays and rads, and to make no further mention of rads.

Essential for Radiobiology/Radiation Oncology
Not only is this book the gold standard, but it is eminently readable. It "sticks". Having seen Dr. Hall lecture I can appreciate how his text reads very much like his class lectures. Makes a topic that a radiation oncologist might find odious rather enjoyable, without sacrificing high standards and scholarly quality.

A great book, by a great physic.
A must read book for radiation oncology and physics residents. All topics on radiobiology are explained in a comprehensible way. This book, plus "The Physics of Radiation Therapy", by Faiz Khan, are the basics of the knowledge for the people who are begining in the understanding of radiation physics. Great book, written for one of the best physics in the world.

Wonderful
I thought Jill's approach to scrapbooking was refreshing. The book is so well laid out with so much attention to small details, she brings fresh, unique ideas to the technique. The speacial effect ideas are stunning and alot easier to create than you would think! Overall, it is the accessibility of the book that impressed me the most, it is a must-have manual for beginners and pros alike.

Really original ideas, ahead of their time
I had the privilege of taking two workshops with Jill Miller at my first-ever scrapbook convention, way back in the year 2000.
Both classes introduced me to techniques we now call "Shabby Chic," all the rage in the scrapbook world at the time of this writing, but totally unheard of nearly three years ago. I wish that all my many scrapbook classes and workshops since those first two had been half as innovative as Jill's.

I was delighted to see that she would be publishing a whole book of her ideas, and waited eagerly for its release, which was quite some time in coming. Now that I have the book, I can say I was not disappointed. It's substantial in size and content, something one does not always get in the world of scrapbooking idea books, about 130 pages long. I don't really understand why it hasn't received more attention, because it certainly deserves it.

The book is lavish in its color printing and detailed close ups of the sample layouts, which cover every page. Jill comes to scrapbooking from the world of stamping arts, and this is THE hot trend in scrapbooking these days. She covers techniques involving the various pearlized powders and shimmering paints, metals including paints and leafing, all manners of distressing your media, and the newly hot textures, including molding paste, embossing and lacquers. Each project sample is clearly labeled beginner, intermediate or advanced, allowing the artist to choose which level with which they feel most comfortable. Materials lists are very clear, as are directions.

My guess as to the reason for its quiet entry into the market is that since it was a long time in production, some of the layouts look a bit "dated" in this trend of the week hobby. As scrappers, don't we all reflect back upon our earlier work and laugh at how far we've come? I would not let that get in the way of purchasing this treasure trove of ideas and instruction, though. The layouts are all lovely and timeless in their appeal, and the directions will allow the reader to venture into new territory using whatever level they are at right now. I can say that this really is one of the most comprehensive and innovative books I've seen in this industry--strong praise for a hobby that lately has at least one new "idea" book a week of late. If you like to experiment and do your scrapbooks for the joy of creating, you will not be disappointed with what you find in these pages. (Gwyn is a scrapbook designer for Fibers By The Yard and Scrapbook Impressions)

Beautiful, Gorgeous, If you only buy one idea book this year
Jill Miller is a magician. Not only has she made absolutely beautiful pages but they are easy to make. With her easy to follow detailed instructions, tons of tips and tricks, I plan on making just about every page she has. Since I am not of the creative mind I have to be a copy cat and I can't wait until my friends and family see what I copy from Jill's book. If you only buy one idea book or magazine, make this the book. It is filled with just about anything you could do on a scrapbook page. Thanks Jill!

Don't get too depressed when reading this book
This book is a concise atlas of every environmental woe our planet has. Great for reference and research, but try not to read it too deeply; you might get a bad case of depression. It's a little too pessimistic for me.

Human Population & environment: Earth in the balance
Human activities and population have increased so mathematically in the last centuries that we are now at a point of having over six billion humans wanting to consume essential for life, natural resources at 1960 levels when we were only three billion people strong.

Our global ecosystems:
oceans taking up 72 % of the earth's surface, used as a [garbage] dump, the origin of and essential for life, yet research on life in them and the possibility for human habitation nearly unfunded. In her chapter "Under the Sea" in 1995 we anticipated the over fishing, over polluting effects of human activities. Weather and wetlands cannot be understood without greater study and understanding of our oceans and human effects on their quality.
Wetlands covered in another chapter include vast swamps, marshes, tropical mangroves and flood plains provide essential buffers to human activities and filter the one percent of the earth's water that is drinkable and accessible.
Forests and rainforests cannot be understood in isolation from biodiversity, wetlands and oceans. Forests are disappearing at an astounding rate, as most of the North American forests were clear cut after colonization, the poor in Africa, South America and Asia are cutting and wasting these continents cleansing and breathing ecosystems.
Soils are essential for growing food, yet forests are cut and farmable land is exploited at nonsustainable rates with no alternative presented. Soon fossil fuel energy and fossil fuel dependent fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides kill wildlife and prevent sustainable farming, when organic and labor intensive alternatives are available.
As the United States heads into a campaign of war in Iraq over oil and political domination, we will again see how the poor and environment are always casualies and how hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on nonsustianable activities in hopes of extending the age of petroleum fuels.
This is just a sampling of the environmental issues that should be in the forefront of public discussion.

Joni Seager, with Clark Reed and Peter Stott's, 2nd, 1995 edition is now over seven years out of date and should be updated. It might be reused in textbooks as well with more research information presented. We can only hope that the Touchstone executives at Simon and Shuster will demand a new 3rd, 2003 edition.

Infographic data about ecology, nations, social life.
Great for anyone, even middle schoolers. Very sobering information for comparison between places. How far do YOU have to walk for firewood?

A great companion for the State of the World Atlas also from Penguin.

Interesting, informative
While the information in the book can be gotten elsewhere these days, Davis' text holds together quite well, and without caving in to any commercial artiface. The term "ethnobiology" seems a little much, however -- I am not sure that any new theoretical ground has been surveyed.

Fascinating, but why no follow up
This is an excellent well written and well researched book that gripped my like few non-fiction books ever have, yet, it leaves science minded people hanging. After all the research Davis conducted it makes no sense that he failed to follow up with experimentation using tetrodotoxin in a laboratory setting. It seems that he comes so close to finding a new use for this sodium blocking drug but fails to follow up. Maybe he has and I just haven't been able to find it despite extensive efforts. If you know of any follow-up please e-mail me

Great work - He also did the leg work
I actually met Wade Davis when he came to Haiti to do his research on his book, and I know personnaly manny of the characters in the book. Wade did an excellent job in portraying what goes on in the underworld of Haiti.

The chapter when he talks about the driver of the commandant of St Marc who was actually a secret society leader and actually had more power and influence than his boss is really key point in the balance of power in Haiti. Those who seem to be nobodies sometimes have more power than presidents

Pretty Basic Information
I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of this book, as I have high expectations of a book from Dr. Stoelting. However, I found that this book contains only basic information. It is good for a quick reference, but if you are looking for in-depth information about a specific topic, you will have to look elsewhere.

Another fantastic book by Dr. Stoelting!
I must agree with Dr. Alqasaim; this book is excellent. Diagrams are well-done, as are the chapters - en tota.

The book has two distinct sections. The first half of the book is dedicated to the subject of pharmachology, and the second, physiology. This is not a large broad-based text.

Additionally, this is not a book to take the place of the old basic science "stand-by's" like Goodman & Gilman's, or Guyton. However, this book is highly useful for review in those aforesaid subjects, as related to the practice of Anesthesiology.

Absolutely well thought-out and executed.

A must-have for your home/office medical library.

EXCELLENT
HIGHLY ADVISABLE FOR ANESTHETIST PREPARING FOR THEIR BOARD EXAM

The Ripple Effect : A Novel of Suspense

I really enjoyed this book!
I just finished this book and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It was different from the usual books I read (Grisham,Finder,Ect), the sailing terms were a little difficult to understand sometimes but for the most part the book keeps you guessing till the very end. Who cant love Morgan for her passion to find her dad win or lose. For a good read this book is a sure thing.

4 1/2 stars
See book summary above.

While consistently coming out with suspenseful novels, Garrison always seems to add an extra flare. The action takes place not only on the sea (thank goodness) but also on land. Some of his characters do have a tendency to be super human (a youngster sailing halfway around the world and a guy who loses an eye, which hardly effects him).

His knowledge of the sea comes through clearly in all his novels. Of course I have very little knowledge about sailing and the sea, so while I learn more from his books, much of it still goes over my head (ref: boat parts and shipping terms). Yet even with all the boating jargon it makes for a gripping thriller.

Recommended.

Kidnapping Pirates, Hurricanes, Terrorists and Lots More
I'm both a sailor girl and an avid reader. I'm also a huge Paul Garrison fan, so whenever he comes out with a new book, I know my day and most of my night is shot, because once you start something of his, you just can't put it down, and THE RIPPLE EFFECT is certainly no exception. In fact, if I may be so bold to say, I believe this is Mr. Garrison's best work. He delivers up people you believe in, puts them in unbelievable situations and makes you believe in them too. And he weaves the real world into his fiction so tightly that you can't tell what's real and what's not.

The story opens with Aiden Page in the Caribbean. We learn that he miraculously survived the tragedy at the World Trade Center on September 11, and that the world thinks he's dead. Because he was being investigated for crimes he didn't commit, because he was faced with losing everything and because he had life insurance, he disappears, leaving a daughter that misses him horribly. He has too much to drink one night and calls her, but he hangs up without speaking. However daughter Morgan knows it's him.

Aiden feels to the bone that his older brother Charlie also survived and just before the planes hit the towers, Charlie gave him a fake passport and told him if anything bad ever happened to run for the island. Blind Man Island, one of the many islands that make up Tonga in the South Pacific, was the island he was talking about and Aiden signs on as crew with a of couple gay nuns who are heading that way in their ageing sailboat. Charlie did survive and he's headed toward the island with a wealthy widow on an expensive yacht. And Morgan steals a small boat in California and is also heading toward the island.

But the island is not the idyllic resort local in the South Seas they'd been lead to believe it is. There are very bad people there who are plotting an act of terrorism that will make what happen at the Twin Towers seem like child's play. Plus getting there is no easy feat for the family Page. Rough seas, kidnapping pirates, a hurricane and more will conspire to stop them as they all race toward the exciting climax.

If THE RIPPLE EFFECT is any kind of gauge of the kind of thrillers we can expect in 2004, this is going to be a banner year for readers like me.
