A good overview but a few cars are missing.
Great coverage of TV's Batmobile and the Munter's cars. Authors also remind you about cars you didn't know Barris did: The Beverly Hillbillies truck, the Flintstones (film of course) cars, updates of the Knight Rider Firebird, the Jurassic Park Explorers, and the infamous sitcom "My Mother the Car" (the butt of many Johnny Carson jokes). But also taking up space are forgotten cars from forgotton projects...the Bugaloos dune buggy and a TV special "Romp". Cars I would have liked to have seen but didn't make the cut include the Monkee Mobile, the Green Hornet's "Black Beauty" and the Stutz replicas made for the TV adventure series "Bearcats!". Overall a good book, but I have a hunch that only the surface of Barris' career has been scratched. How about a large format book with lots of color and details on the surviving movie cars and "Kustoms" that made Barris the legend he is?

a must reading for the true custom car lover.
I had the opertunity to meet george barris at the Houston Autorama. He not only took time to autograph his book but to visit about custom cars. We visited for quite some time and he went to look at my custom car. I was impressed by his down to earth genuine interest in my projects. Movie cars built by Pegasus Motorcars he liked my designs and the wild wing on the back was his favorite. Thank you George Barris you are my Hero. Charlie Van Natter. .

detailed, informative, honest and up to date
DAVID FETHERSTON DID A VERY GOOD JOB ON THIS BOOK. EXTRACTING INFORMATION FROM KING GEORGE IS NO EASY TASK.

A solid, well illustrated history and explanation...
of all Boss pedals. You have to be a little obsessive to buy a book like this but effects are so poorly documented and described in general that I can see the need for this quite thorough document. Boss pedals were made in Japan (but now Taiwan) and enjoyed a reputation for quality sound and design and contruction. They are now battling (and involved in creating) large, low-cost, high-value multi-effects -- the book does a good job of pointing out the attractive simplicity of the earlier 2 and 3 control models over the new over-packed feature overloaded models and multi-effect units.

This book does a good job including personal accounts, reviews, lots of color and black and white pictures. Descriptions of each effect -- by model, not just type! There are also terse descriptions of Boss effects used by big name stars during different period (this struck me as rather superficial and not as interesting as I had expected).

Have you ever wondered how Overdrive differs from Distortion -- well the tables, graphs but especially the large number oscilliscope snap shots give you a pretty good idea of not only that but also how an OD1 differs from and OD2! They cover all of the main effects and some at several settings --- quite thorough. However, the actual implementation details are not discussed -- a serious oversight but perhaps understandable as this is their intellectual property. For example, I happen to know Boss use 3 diodes to produce their characteristic asymmetrical overdrive wave forms and the people looking for this type of book will often want to know such things, and that ODs put the voltage-clamping diodes into the feedback loop of an op-amp circuit for a subtle effect while a Distortion puts the voltage-clamping diodes across the output of an op-amp circuit to product hard signal clipping -- but you will not find that hear, instead you would need to go to the web (a guy in Australia has a great site but there are numerous others).

The other neat feature of this book is the enclosed *CD* which is great if you ever wondered what a particular effect sounds like (some Boss effects are now rare and some are fairly valuable -- supposedly). By the way, my favourite Boss effect is current the OS2 Overdrive/Distortion which you can set at either an overdrive, a distortion or something in between. The only drawback -- it actually costs as much as a distortion pedal plus an overdrive pedal(come on, offer us some real value!). The other thing is, with a Marshall tube amp, I find it hard to justify paying for a solid state distortion/ overdrive -- the amp does it all, at least as good and usually better. Most modern practice amps have distortion and OD capability built in - increasingly they offer reverb, chorus, delay and reverb too. There will always be some market for these discrete pedals though -- they contribute so much to rock and pop over the years.

You would probably be better off experimenting with the effects in a store but even larger stores rarely have a full choice available, so if you really must have effects (it could be argued that a good amp and a good guitar and is all that is needed) and Boss is your thing, then this is a really good book. It seems most guitarists consider at least one OD or distortion to be essential equipment (to allow the amp to be run for long periods without excessive "amp noise" but still allwoing it to kicked-up with the pedal for that big solo!). I would personally add a simple wah-wah (not covered in this book) to the list of essentials.

Great book, very informative, tons of photos
This book is for any guitarist, bassist or collector of BOSS effect pedals. This book reviews every Boss pedal ever made and gives information on dating Boss pedals. This book has interviews with the founder of Boss and a CD featuring the sounds of the pedals. If you're a pedal junkie like me, this book is for you. Now if Hal Leonard would only publish a book on Electro-Harmonix!!!!!!!

Guess who's BOSS
Just like my title says "Guess who's BOSS." Roland (the makers of Boss effects out did themselves with this book, it is must read or look at for anyone wanting to know the history of Boss effects and the accompaning CD (samples) is just beyond excellent.

Color Medicine
It's a well written book, but so it should be, based on all the information that is taken from Dinshahs'initial work on light therapy over 50 years ago. You can get copies of Dinshahs' material "cheap" from their website... Dinshahs' work was well ahead of its time. It's too bad certain organizations are"still" threatened by his work even though it was an array of doctors who had written most of the original testimonials backing up his work. "Color Medicine" is mostly Dinshahs' work with some good added info. on the healing powers of sound. It's nice to know a modern book acknowledges Dinshahs' work as opposed to many other "Color" books that don't.

Short and to the point.
This book expains color and it's use for healing. How colors effect us, and how they can be used for the betterment of man. What I really like about this book is that he tells specifically how to use color for healing. Alot of books just give you theory, without instructions on how to accomplish, what is being talked about.

Color Medicine
Excellent book. Easy to understand and use.

The Rickover Effect: The Inside Story of How Adm. Hyman Rickover Built the Nuclear Navy
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (11 August, 1995)
Author: Theodore Rockwell
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Detailed, but biased account of a Navy maverick
"The Rickover Effect" is a fascinating depiction of Admiral Hyman Rickover's efforts to build the nuclear Navy. This book is not intended to serve as a comprehensive chronicle of Rickover's career and private life, but as a chronicle of Rickover's accomplishments in bringing nuclear power to the Navy as viewed by a subordinate. Within these self-admitted limitations, the book succeeds, but Theodore Rockwell also attempts to turn Rickover's leadership style into some sort of management primer.

Rockwell examines various anecdotes and discusses the effectiveness of Rickover's management acumen in dealing with both political and technical problems. This attempt to explain "The Rickover Effect" is rather clumsy and unnecessary. The reader can judge for him or herself the success of Rickover's abilities.

Readers unfamiliar with Rickover's personality must keep in mind that this account is written by someone who obviously admired and respected Rickover a great deal. Rockwell's close association with Rickover has caused him to see the Admiral through biased eyes. Rockwell sees Rickover as firm but fair, which isn't entirely accurate. Although truly a visionary, Rickover was extremely difficult for most military personnel to get along with and prone to frightening fits of rage. Although he was often the target of attacks on his character, Rickover often treated his political enemies and detractors cruelly, and at times led his own vicious attacks. Rockwell appears sincere in his treatment of Rickover, but it is obvious he doesn't see the Admiral as an outsider would.

With these limitations in mind, this is actually a very entertaining account of how the nuclear Navy started.

Biased, but readable and interesting
The author holds Admiral Rickover in extremely high regard, so much so that the book reads more like advertising than non-fiction. I can't recall a single case in the book where Rickover is described as making a mistake, being unreasonable, or doing something dumb! People in a position to know tell me that Rickover was extremely difficult to work with, especially when challenged by a subordinate, but you'd never guess at such problems from Rockwell's book! Rickover is presented as stern and demanding, but always fair. Despite my nit-picking, this is still a worthwhile book for someone interested in the subject. Rickover definitely knew how to get things done, and deserves great credit for his work on making nuclear power reactors into a working concept. It is highly readable, and the Rickover quotes sprinkled through the pages are worth the purchase price. A lengthy, but more balanced account is in Norman Polmar's book, Rickover.

The Paradigm of Operational Excellence & High-Reliability
Many biographies have been written about Hyman Rickover, the father of the Nuclear Navy, which focus on his dictatorial idiosyncrasies and leave the reader wondering how anyone could have ever worked for him. In "The Rickover Effect: How One Man Made A Difference" author Ted Rockwell discusses how Rickover's leadership style created a paradigm shift among all of the organizations he came in contact with focusing away from the status quo and toward operational excellence and high-reliability. Rockwell, who worked for Rickover from 1949 to 1964 and served as the Technical Director of the U.S. Naval Reactors Program (NR) between 1954 and 1964 is certainly in one of the best positions to discuss his perceptions of Rickover's personality, work ethic, and style.

One of the quotes from the book that impressed me very much was that Rickover questioned how people who admitted they could never have accomplished what he had done -- building the first atomic submarine from abstract concept to reality in record time - could question his leadership and management style. Critics generally focus on Rickover's demanding style as ruthless and insensitive, when in reality he was building a committed organization and shaking out those that were not as dedicated as he was. It is quite obvious that Rickover would never had asked anyone to do anything he was not willing to do.

Rockwell's story encompasses his recruitment out of the post Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge until Rickover's death. While Rockwell left the Naval Reactors program 1964, he continues to write about how Rickover's influence shaped his management and technological paradigm and allowed he and two of his co-workers at NR to open an engineering firm delivering outside of the Navy the same operational excellence and high-reliability systems they had developed in NR. Rockwell also discusses how leaving Rickover's program changed their relationship.

Rockwell's book is a pleasant read, as his story is not overly technical and draws readers into an appreciation of how the Naval Reactors program influenced work systems and quality management. This book should be of interest not just to those interested in the life of Hyman Rickover and the Nuclear Navy, but persons studying leadership and culture management, technological advancement, and the career of Ted Rockwell - one of the unsung heroes of nuclear technology. I also encourage readers to check out Rockwell's new book, "Creating the New World: Stories and Images From the Dawn of the Atomic Age."

OK, Just Not Very Pretty
This is a great volume, for the reasons the other reviewers have sited. I just didn't care for her style because it seems too amateurish. It was not something I would want to imitate.

great resource for creating stencilled trompe l'oeil
This is a terrific resource for getting you started on trompe l'oeil stencilling. The book has MANY photographs and drawings to illustrate technique and finished objects and, after several introductory chapters that focus on the use of stencils and paint effects, is organized into a series of projects. Within the context of these seven specific projects the author describes various techniques, such as using a multi-overlay stencil, shading, stippling, creating woodgrain, pitfalls to avoid, freeform stencilling, etc. Each project is accompanied by a pattern that can be enlarged on a photocopier and then used to make the stencils you'll need to complete the project. The projects described are a rose border, teddy bear, keys, grapevine, shelf with crockery, umbrella plant and marble fruit bowl.

EXCELLENT!
It is a book u would like to own. Contains step by step stencling instructions & very good illustrations too. Painting instructions like overlaying & many beautiful designs have been provided in the back of the book. THis book has also covered the 3D stenciling with attractive designs & innovative ideas. U can just paint every where u want to.

This is a good book...
But you need to have a few comercial plug-ins and this means spend money, instead of this you can learn many tricks other people learn with experience and time. I really don't know if the book isn't good enoght or 3D Studio is very incomplete, filling the holes with expensive IPAS.

3d Studio &Hollywood Gaming Effects
First of all, I want to say that I'm from Sweden, so please be indulgence with my language. I've read the magnificant book of 3d Studio & Hollywood Gaming Effects. I used both 3d Studio and 3D max for the tutorials, and I was quite impressed. The book is based on examples and tutorials, made by pros'. The examples in the book are very detailed, and are understandble, even for an amateur like me. And the best thing is that, if you dont understand what they're talking about, just put in the CD-Rom (that comes with the book) find the chapter for the example, and run it. There you have it, step by step, all the exaples in the book on the CD-Rom are explained on the CD-Rom too. A book for both amateurs and proffesionals, that increase the flexibilaty you need to become a graphic artist. And even if you're using 3d Max, the examples in the book - and on the CD-Rom - works properly. Since Max and Studio are based on the same system. The examples in the books are well illustrated, and the layout makes it very easy to find and read. You learn new things every time you browse through the book. And just by watching the exapmles on the CD-Rom, you can load a project - and go through it - see for your self how it's build. And in that way learn some useful hints & tricks. A low cost educational book, that you can get useful hints & tricks from, that you cant get from anywhere else. As I said, my English is bad. I sometimes can't find a way to express my feelings in words. But it is a good book. I rated the book with a 9. Now that, is self explained. Happy rendering, Your Friend In The Jungle Of 3D.

3D Effects For The Experts By The Experts
When I first picked this book up I was expecting it to be another book on teaching the beginner how to do simple effects. I could never have been so wrong. Starting at an advanced level, the book assumes you not only have lots of experience with 3D Studio, but some additional software tools as well. Then, it shows you, in detail, how to create certain effects, all of which can be easily adapted to your scenes. Some of the effects include overlaying your animation with video so that it 'fits' together, or extended use of 'Bones Pro' and 'MetaBall Modelers'(which are plug-ins for 3D Studio) to create organic models.

For beginners, I recommend "3D Studio Special Effects/Book and Cd Rom" while this book is more for users with a solid grip on 3D Studio.

INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE
A very informative book about free radicals, anti-oxidants and longevity, focusing on the role of Alpha Lipoic Acid and its use in anti-aging in general, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and in neuroprotection. Other chapters deal with this role of this potent anti-oxidant in inflammatory disorders, HIV, and vision disorders like macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. I found the section on the main free radical culprits and the major protective anti-oxidants very interesting. One can even work out your own anti-oxidant profile in a question-and-answers section. There is a resource guide for buying it as a supplement, a section on questions and answers, a very extensive bibliography and a thorough index.

ALA worked for my elderly father
My father was suffering terribly from the effects of aging, and we
were all seeking alternative supplements to help him. Sosin's book
gave some very thorough information on alpha lipoic acid. We double
checked this information at a good site...We found out that ALA is
good for us younger people too. Thanks to Sosin's book..., my
father is doing much better. He's back with us now.

Great things I underline red. The book is red all over now.
If you start using a unsuspected pill to improve your life and it works you feel that the books are a gift. Where I live everything has to be scientificly proven. Pycnogenol is in the book and I use it against Restless Legs. The therapeutic recommendations are a great relieve for living on with Alpha Lipoic Acid. Not dangerous unless you take for 1000 US dollars a day. I started with 3 times 50 mg and are using now 9 times this doses. As my Glucose values dropped from average 11.5 mmol/liter to 7.5 mmol/liter I really feel fantastic. And I sleep the sleep of the innocent rather than the two hour Stressed naps. Great job by Allen Sosin. Great to have him via Amazon books on the Internet. Fred van Waaijen, 60 years old again going strong in Amsterdam the Netherlands, Europe.

Somewhat flawed
Despite the compelling tale, the poignant illustrations and the author's good intentions, I have some problems with this book. It plays too much into the "noble savages/thoughtless europeans/rowdy teenagers" stereotypes that are insulting to all those groups. Stereotypes, whether they be good or bad are not helpful to the intellectual development of young people and will cause many (especially in the stereotyped groups) to tune out. I love the story and the illustrations but would not read it to my kids or students unless a better option was unavailable.

A magical journey through history
My 5 year old son and I watched this story read on "Reading Rainbow". This book is about a turtle carved in a rock by a Native American in pre-Columbus days. The turtle remains watching as history moves on. It witnesses the immigration of the European's, who take over the land from the Native Americans and go on to build a big city. For many years, the turtle is covered by graffiti and then is finally discovered by an archeologist. I wondered if the subject matter was too advanced for my son. But, he was mesmerized. Like all good books this one speaks to all ages with many lessons and perspectives. Its a story of history, art, people, change, archeology and more. After the story was finished my son turned to me and said, "Mommy we have to get that book." And we did!

A wonderful introduction to Indians and archaeology,
What a nice way to introduce young children to the world before New York City and its environs were a busy, noisy sometimes polluted place! An Indian legend, an archaeologist and the importance of the environment are all packed in this charming short, exquisitely illustrated book. Great for those who live near the Bronx Botanical Garden but delightful for any child who wonders about the world around us.

Taking turns others don't
Meehan's book is nine chapters, nine stories beginning
with his freshman year at MIT in 1957. He goes in the
army, he goes around the world to Thailand, he goes
down the world to Chile. I could not stop following
him. He really has no extraordinary adventures; what
makes the book extraordinary is his power of observing
and reflecting on himself and what happens around him.
He has a special appeal as a subject since he seems to
occasionally go out of control but never out of focus.
Maybe his years investigating the stability of land to
hold dams and support buildings have benefited his huge
literary talents. There is something very special about
these stories. The book has a shocking ending where he
seems to promise the reader that he is finishing
himself off in a lucrative dreariness in Palo Alto, but
then if you remember the book's beginning you see that
he thrives by taking turns others don't.

--Steve Baer Coevolution Quarterly

Unstable Ground, Other Hazards of California
This is a detailed, well presented, superbly argued and absolutely fascinating account of one episode in the continuing interaction between science, technology, the law and the public interest. It once and for all puts to rest the idea that science uses a well defined and unambiguous method and speaks with a single voice. It makes it clear that experts participating in and testifying before a public forum are often outside their domain of expertise and therefore speak as laypersons, not as experts. It shows the need for public standards regulating the use of expert knowledge. Containing vivid portraits of the individuals participating in the debate, it shows how even very abstract considerations are influenced by the character and the temperament of those producing them. Required reading for historians of science and technology, philosophers of science, regulatory commissions and the members of citizens' boards dealing with scientific and technological matters.

Attempting To Understand An Unusual Experience
I can't say I intensely enjoyed reading this book but then I've never had a near death experience. However it does stay consistent with the title. This book is not about describing near death experiences although some are described, mainly the author's. It's about understanding the experience and making recommendations about how to deal with the affects of the experience. There's quite a bit of material about philosophy and making correlations between main stream religious or philosophical ideas and the near death experience. I would say a near death experience is consistent with the belief systems of most religions including Christian religions. The individual's entire life flashes before them instantly and they understand how everything they did affected any other person. The author came close to dying several times I think and describes her experiences and tells how she attempted to deal with and understand these experiences. She also tries to find similarities with others who have had similar experiences. These experiences are much more common today than in the past due to the ability of doctors to revive people who are almost dead. I believe nowadays for some delicate medical procedures people are almost put into a death state to greatly reduce blood flow. I'm still looking for a good book about people who went to hell for awhile and came back. However if I recall the author suspected that maybe people don't often talk about going down there. Going to hell is an indication that a person's life has truly been a failure and that the person is bad. This book is mainly positive. The author believes in God.

the best one I have found so far on the topic
Having myself had an 'NDE' in 1975 without any actual outer danger to threaten my life, and being on a spiritual path since 1972 without belonging anymore to any religion, I have been especially happy to find this book, which has the widest perspective among the many others I have read on this topic. I have also been very happy to 'meet' Mrs Atwater through her book, for her delightful sense of humour and her down-to-earth simplicity about it all are quite refreshing and encouraging for those who, like me, are trying to be honest and sincere researchers, without being stuck into sterile 'scientific' intellectuality. I would be most happy to be able to communicate with her personally, even though I could not yet get copies of her subsequent books on the same topic.

You shouldn't be dissappointed!
I very much enjoyed this book because it validated my own experience that happened due to a medical problem when I was young. The whole profile really fit me. It also presented other ideas to spark one's curiosity on the subject. This is one of those things that you almost can't fully appreciate unless it's happened to you, and that's one of the reasons why the scientific community hasn't treated it with alot of credibility. If you, or someone you know has experienced a NDE then this is a must-read.
