From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives

The director of the Lucasfilm Archives says that before Return of the Jedi, it just never occurred to anyone to formally store and catalog the accumulated "stuff" associated with the Star Wars films. Stormtrooper helmets and lightsabers were crammed next to models of tauntauns and sandcrawlers in closets and cubbyholes. Only when George Lucas was surrounded by all this junk for a Jedi publicity shot did the Lucasfilm folks realize what an amazing collection they had.

That collection only grew when Lucas scored with the popular Indiana Jones trilogy, which added all manner of whips, swords, and idols to the archive. This photo-packed book chronologically surveys the collection's highlights: props, models, storyboards, backdrops, and sketches, spanning all six films. Fans of either (or both) series will be gratified by a glimpse at these oh-so-cool artifacts. Unfortunately, the text isn't quite as edifying as the pictures. Behind-the-scenes insights, such as the fact that Imperial Walkers were a late substitution for Norwegian army tanks and that Indy's shooting of the swordmaster in the market was a fatigue-induced ad lib, often take a back seat to unnecessary plot recaps and equally superfluous explanations (for example, that the Force is sort of like chi). Of course, the artifacts from the archive are the real attraction, and they don't disappoint. --Paul Hughes

Great pictures
Fun book to peruse. I'd have liked more details about construction of props or pics of props being built. Also, more "Star Wars" than "Raiders" despite the title.

Great Collection.
This book offers an inside look at the huge collection of the Lucasfilm Archives. Conceptual art, models, props, puppets, masks, and various other movie making elements from the original STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES trilogies are examined and the last few pages look at three or four items from other Lucasfilm projects including WILLOW and HOWARD THE DUCK. The text is more than just element descriptions and some of the information is interesting and rather fascinating. A great book for any STAR WARS and/or INDIANA JONES fan and a must for a Lucas buff.

Why George Lucas will always eclipse the Star Trek Franchise
This book is proof positive why George Lucas and Speilberg will always be superior to the Star Trek Franchise with their brand of movies. The pictures in this one are a must have for any fan of Star Wars or Indiana Jones. The complete story boards. Not just crude renderings. The masks, the designs that didn't make it into the movie. The characters in all their films are not by formula. All the Star Wars aliens and models from Return of the Jedi are in this volume. You can see how closely the story boards match what would eventually would become the movie.

it just doesn't work
Orally taken, (supposed), 'homeopathic' HGH 'precursers', 'secretogogues', or whatever they're being called in the latest industry scam, simply -don't work-. Ask yourself this: where are the millions of satisfied customers? There certainly are millions who have tried this stuff. Klatz is known to have connections with manufacturers that he doesn't mention. This book specializes is making _incorrect_ assumptions, such as:1/ If HGH injections work , then oral HGH will work 2/ If certain conditions can be helped with HGH, then HGH can further improve the strength of those who aren't sick, and 3/'1' and '2', as applied to precursers. If you read this book with wishful thinking, the examples may inspire you, but if you read with a rational mind, they will seem like the rediculous exagerations that they are. GOOD NEWS! there is one safe, effective way to up your HGH: short intense weight workouts.

the most through and accurate review of antiaging hormonal
a through review of hgh and antiaging hormones in a well written and easily understood writing style. Abundant refrences and lots of how to get it and how to do it yourself if you are so inclined. This is the first and only book to be offically banned by the NIA ( Nat inst of aging), that should say something. Perhaps they are scared that the information contained within might put them out of work.

Fascinating book -- I could hardly put it down.
I received a copy of this book when I was introduced to HGH in an affordable form. It was exciting to learn that the "average" person now has access to HGH, rather than just the wealthy. Aging doesn't have to be inevitable, as we all previously thought. When a person reaches the age of 50 (and I am assuming that others feel as I did), even though we don't look "old" as 50-year-olds did a number of years ago, taletale signs of aging are evident: age spots, wrinkles, graying hair, hair loss, diminished eyesight and muscle tone, loss of vigor and sexual desirability. It is very exciting to learn of a simple and medically proven safe way to reverse the aging process and regain a youthful appearance and a more healthy body, as we had twenty years earlier. I've told all of my friends about HGH and the fascinating case studies presented in the book.

Users of Adobe After Effects 3.1, the professional compositing application for Macintosh and Windows, have an excellent guidebook in this Classroom in a Book offering. In lesson after lesson, you build increasingly sophisticated composite movies using project files on the book's hybrid CD-ROM. You start off by learning the interface and then use the product's layering, masking, matte, keying-control, and special effects features. Then you learn how to animate with keyframes; adjust interpolations and velocity; use motion tracking and blue-screen keying features; synchronize audio and video; integrate animated layers from Photoshop; and render your movies. An appendix provides technical information on issues relating to film and video, such as alpha channels, frame rates, video-safe areas, NTSC color space, video aspect ratios, interlacing, video transfers, rendering for film, and audio.

Well written with good exercises.
This book will teach you the fundamentals. The exercises work and produce the results expected. The book could use a more comprehensive index.

Gives you all the basics.
I've just jumped into the world of graphic design and all of the Classroom in a Book series have been extremely helpful. If there were only one criticism of After Effects, I'd say that the projects weren't really "modern" enough for what I want to do. It doesn't show you how to do fast paced commercial like effects, instead it teaches you slower, more simple projects. But all the basics are there which is the important part.

As always from Adobe-a must have learning book!
All Adobe Classroom In A Book series (and I've done many) have been wonderful. This is no exception. I only wish they would introduce them with their software release, only makes sense. I am now waiting for AE 4.0 Classroom in a book. Adobe has the best plan of any software company on how to educate it's masses. Thanks again Adobe, and now where's 4.0 and what did you do to the clone brush and eye dropper in Photoshop 5.0?

Even if you love art, love cool pictures, love computers, and love your graphics job, says designer and author Shane Hunt, you still want to get your work done quickly and painlessly. Hunt provides you with time-saving tools and tips on working smart in CorelDRAW 9 F/X and Design. This graphics- and content-rich book allows beginning or advanced users to take charge and master CorelDRAW 9, the powerful object-oriented graphics suite.

Almost every page includes a "tips" section--these range from bitmap explanations and exporting to duotone hints and tricks for color. Along with the manageable step-by-step projects in the book, Hunt includes a brilliant color studio and visual gallery filled with final images (these can also be found on the CD-ROM) that include corresponding sites in the book. For example, she directs readers to "find something you like, point finger, exclaim 'Cool!' then flip to the chapter that explains the process. Enjoy!" Some of the tutorials take you from past images--in one section, from the '30s and '40s--and show you how to add sci-fi pulp and comic-book style touches to your designs.

The accompanying CD-ROM is packed with tutorial files in native CorelDRAW formats, animation files, button and interface design samples, clip-art pics, plug-ins, graphics goodies, and f/x utilities. This is a great resource for graphics designers ready to plunge into the world of splashy creations and advance their careers with a deeper understanding of CorelDRAW 9. --Brooke Gilbert

Where's the stuff on the CD?
It is written that the CD includes suite of auto F/X Utilities plus Ulead software web programs, fonts, clip-arts and other goodies plus demos of popular plug-ins. Now, where has this stuff gone..? I have searched and searched and been looking all over the CD in the only folder that are on my CD but still nothing as meantioned above on the CD-ROM. Just plain files of CorelDraw following the chapters. Where can I get the rest of the stuff that suppose to be included or can I get another CD sent to me?

Please, may I have a new CD included the plug-ins/softwares..? I thought Coriolis was a good book as those Wow!-books becasue the wow!-books do include the files/plug-ins/softwares as they say on the cover/inside the book.

CD is incomplete
I absolutely LOVE this book. It's opened up a whole new world of possibilities with Corel Draw 9. By the time I've experimented with all of the tutorials, I'm sure I'll be quite the whizz kid. Unfortunately, I'll have to do it all without any help from the CD. There is no INSTALL.EXE on the CD. Therefore, I am unable to install it. Although I can access its contents through my CD-ROM, using it that way tends to freeze up my system and it's just not worth the aggravation. But the book itself is a real jewel and I truly enjoy reading and learning from it. Shane Hunt's writing style immediately puts the reader at ease. This alone is worth its weight in gold and is a rare and welcome commodity in "How-To" books. Thanks Shane!

Excellent Guide to Professional Techniques
This is the best how to book I have ever worked through. It is a must have for Corel Draw 9 and 10 users who have never learned all the hidden secrets and shortcuts to this program. After learning each and every technique in this book, my talents in graphic design have multiplied greatly! I find my self creating amazing graphics I never would have believed possible. Thanks Shane Hunt for writing this incredible book!

Some valid points, but....
overall the book isn't one that adds up. Walker seems to vacilate between suggesting ADHD simply doesn't exist -- that it is always the symptom of an underlying problem -- and saying that there may be something to it if no underlying disorder can be found, but Ritalin isn't the answer. I found myself getting confused in spots about what he really believes.

His points about Ritalin are well made. He's absolutely correct in stating that it can be a risky drug for children to be on, that we haven't done enough appropriate longitudinal research, and that the side effects for some children can be problematic, at best. The key words, however, are some children. I know children who are on the drug who aren't having any problems with it. The whole issue of what is a cause and what is an effect is a confusing one, and this book doesn't make it any clearer.

In terms of the safety of Ritalin, the research and studies Dr. Walker mentions are based on such small sample sizes that they can't be taken as proof. His writing suggested to me that he was attempting to suggest causal relationships when he only had enough evidence to point out a correlation.

Now, Dr. Walker's points about HMOs and the lack of proper diagnosis of children are ones I can completely agree with. It's in this area that his evidence and argument is the strongest. He does a good job of explaining the different possible non ADHD causes of hyperactive behaviour. I did find this part of the book a bit long, however.

The latter parts of the book, dealing with advocating for your child with medical and educational professionals, is the most effective and useful part of the book. I would give the book two stars simply for the chapter where he gives readers observation sheets to fill out and give to the doctor as a basis for a proper medical examination. His advice on dealing with these professionals is sound and easy to implement -- he takes alot of the mystery and fear out of working with doctors and teachers. I would have like to see him encourage readers more to press for wider societal change, such as loosening the grip of HMOs and relieving some of the pressure on our schools -- changes that can only occur on a legislative/cultural level -- rather than simply pitting parents against doctors and teachers, however.

This book is worth looking at if you know nothing other causes of hyperactive behavior. It's got some useful information, but I wouldn't make it the only book I read on the subject.

A Must Read !!!!
Put very simply, this could be the most important book you will ever read. It will change your life, your children's lives, your family life, and the way you view the medical and psychiatric community. If your child has been "diagnosed" with ADHD, ADD, or one of the other behavioral "disorders" or has been put on Ritalin, Aderall, or an anti-depressant, you owe it to yourself and your family to read this book.

I was his patient as a child.
After years of unsuccessful psychiatric work, school problems, and Ritalin, my parents found Dr. Walker. I was eight, and my parents and teachers were at a point where I was probably no longer going to be able to attend school and there was a possibility of being institutionalized. The rages that I would fly into would take a room apart. The animals and three other siblings in my family were continually terrorized. Babysitters refused to stay with us.

It is hard to talk about this stuff now, as I am a thirty-something adult with a very healthy and happy life. I have a wonderful husband, a 17-month-old daughter, and a baby on the way. Dr. Walker diagnosed me as being allergic to gluten and as being a borderline diabetic who with strict diet management would hopefully never have to take insulin. My diet went into effect when I was eight, immediately after my parents brought me home from Dr.Walker's multi-day visit. It worked. I don't know how long the diet took to work because I was so young, but my parents said that the change was like night and day. A normal, healthy, child without Ritalin. In adulthood I still do not need insulin.

It is not always easy to find out what the problem is. In fact, my parents probably spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars, many hours, and many trips to different doctors. (We visited Dr.Walker who practiced in CA, while we lived in AZ.) Boy do I owe my parents! But there can be reasons for such behavior that take some serious digging. Ritalin, often, is just a cover-up and a heck of a lot easier to do. But for sake of the health of the child please consider alternatives.

Not the best choice
This book's usefulness is diminished by the often heavy-handed techniques it demonstrates. The old age makeup, for instance, is poorly applied and would not register well with an audience. Swinfield is at her best with fantasy makeups such as Titania--but watch out for those techniques that can be done far better, such as the "troll's" latex nose. Beginners looking for a basic text at a reasonable price would do well to investigate Laura Thudium's "Stage Makeup"; those willing to bite the bullet and shell out the big bucks should purchase Richard Corson's "Stage Makeup," the bible of the field.

Good quick reference source
Although I'm only somewhat enthusiastic about this title, my high school theatre students are VERY enthusiastic about it -- and so I'll amend my previous review by saying that the book has excellent photos that provide good, basic guidelines. My students enjoy opening the book to the instructions of their choice and following them (as the title states) step by step. As I happen to be the school librarian as well as the theatre director, I've added this title to our library's collection in order to make it readily available for reference. Yes, this title belongs in every high school library, and colleges and universities would do well to consider it.

A fabulous general reference
For the person who wants to get an excellent grounding in stage makeup, this is the place to start. It very well may be the place to end, also, unless you need to delve more deeply into special effects makeup. Rather than giving you hard and fast rules, the author explains the principles behind good makeup design and application. There are tons of pictures, and it covers most basic makeup situations for stage, with a cursory treatment of other applications such as film and television.

Kind of Hard to Believe.
Well, it's a great book as fiction. I read this late last summer and thought it was cute, but it didn't change my preconceived notions that leprechauns simply don't exist.

When the author decides she will take a vacation to rediscover her Irish roots and take a break from everyday stress, we discover immediately that she has not had the best of mental health in the past, herself. Taking that into consideration might explain the commonplace descriptions of the leprechauns- as though she's been seeing them all her life.

Reading this would convince one that perhaps she HAS.

Tanis not only speaks to the family of leprechauns, but also the other spirits. She goes shopping with them, shares her cabin with all sorts of fantastic creatures a five-year-old would delight in reading about. As the book progresses, it just begins to irritate those of us who are "denser" than Ms,. Helliwell (I know not her current marital status). Because she's so willing to believe in the supernatural, she's therefore able to see and communicate with them.

According to her, the leprechauns have become her friends and still visit her periodically! They're the reason she's written this book. To tell us mortals (what does she believe herself to be?) that we should not eat lettuce because it screams when it's uprooted. (I swear to you, this is ACTUALLY in the book, mentioned several times.)

For what it's worth, the book is charming and quaint fiction. As a realistic look at the supernatural, it's simply not up to par. Read it if you'd like a refreshing work of fiction or a nice break from your typical gory Stephen King cold-blooded murder mystery. For something about the supernatural, keep looking. Even the most open-minded reader would find this exceedingly difficult to believe.

An Enchanting Tale from the Imaginal Realm
SUMMER WITH THE LEPRECHAUNS tells the story of how Tanis Helliwell met leprechauns while spending a summer in Ireland. If you understand that beings from the "imaginal realm" are real, then what would otherwise seem like complete fiction develops the rich hues and textures of multi-dimensional consciousness.

Much of SUMMER WITH THE LEPRECHAUNS consists of dialogue between Tanis and the leprechauns. One leprechaun in particular spends hour after hour describing the world of elementals, in order to improve communication between humans and elementals.

SUMMER WITH THE LEPRECHAUNS is a truly delightful book that will help you open your mind to new worlds and get you thinking about how magical this world really is!

Cynthia Sue Larson

-- author of "Aura Advantage: How the Colors in Your Aura Can Help You Attain What You Desire and Attract Success"

Delightful
This book has opened up a whole new world for me. The key to it's magic is "Believing is seeing". Both the story and information flow perfectly. The humor throughout made it a joy.

Thank you, Dr. Wright...
With conventional medicine so bent on testosterone as the "bad guy", bringing declining hormone levels back to healthy levels makes sense. Women have hormone imbalance from estrogen dominance and lack of progesterone production - are we guys exempt? I especially enjoy Dr. Wright's emphasis on natural testosterone supplementation at normal psysiological levels instead of synthetic testosterone at much higher doses with all the side effects. And he has the studies to back him up. Once one understands that pharmaceutical companies cannot patent natural products, then it makes sense why many doctors are not educated in using natural products when appropiate. Dr. Wright's work is timely, relavent, and a fun read. I highly recommend it to any man over 40.

Thorough Coverage of a Great Subject
Rarely does a book on a health topic report the full range of evidence so thoroughly and carefully as this one. Yet with all its technical depth, the text is eminently readable. Most anyone, from physician to ordinary literate person, can understand it and benefit.

And how great is the benefit! A simple substance, a testosterone cream, rubbed on the skin, is likely to improve a broad range of conditions, including sexual performance, cardiovascular health, energy, and strength.

Unfortunately, prevailing medical dogma sees testosterone supplementation as a villain, which will cause prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. The open-minded doctor who reads this book will surely think otherwise. The possibilitly, nonetheless, of promoting an EXISTING prostate cancer is candidly discussed and precautions are advised. One must know his prostate before proceeding.

To this end there are two chapters on the prostate, the most definitive and complete discussion that I have seen (and I have read hundreds of pages on the subject).

Most authorities will contine to withhold this information from the public on the pretext of its being scientifically unproven. What a shame. The reader should trust his own judgement as to the strength of the evidence and should find an unbiased, informed physician with whom to work.

Great book - get it.
I've read this book. It was an easy and straight-forward read. I liked the information it gave regarding testosterone injections. It would be most helpful if doctors started updating their knowledge on Male Hormone Therapy. Since reading this book and taking the natural supplement "THOR-Plex," I have been so much better off... I plan to buy a few other books on the subject here at Amazon and read up some more on this fascinating subject.

Useful if you knew nothing about the media beforehand
I read this book after reading Gerard Jones' _Killing Monsters_ and was disappointed. Much of the book is spent describing the intertwined homogeneous nature of mass media. However, this shouldn't be news to many people. We are supposed to be shocked and outraged that the people who are programming television "entertainment" are doing it to make money at the expense of our children. We are supposed to be surprised that shows like the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are parts of extensive, pervasive campaigns to extend brands across television, movies, toys, cereals, etc. We are supposed to be outraged that the mass media has close ties to government. Does he think we've been living in a cave?

However, Steyer distorts a grim picture to make it appear even worse than it is. Yes, Colin Powell may be friends with the chairman of AOL Time Warner, and maybe that had something to do with his son being appointed to the head of the FCC, but Steyer neglects to point out that Michael Powell served as an FCC commissioner for years beforehand, and that his father was a board member of AOL/TW until he resigned to join the Bush administration.

Furthermore, Steyer's suggestions of what parents can do lacks the specifics that would lead to action. He advocates increasing "media awareness" in our children, but doesn't suggest many sample activities that might help our children control their media intake themselves. Our children will grow in an environment where they will not be isolated from the mass media no matter what we do in our own homes. They will see and hear about terrible things, like it our not. We need to provide them with the tools to cope which they will use the rest of their lives.

A Left-wing Slant on the Tube
Steyer presents some interesting ideas and potential solutions in The Other Parent but his blatant ideological leanings and constant fawnings over the Clintons ('I will forever appreciate his [Bill Clinton's] personal kindness' - see the acknowledgements) will trouble all but the most ardent admirers of the former president. Steyer gives no indication if he would allow his own daughter to serve 'under' the former president as an a young intern some day.

As to Steyer's take on television and media programming in general, I still lean towards turning it off all together. Steyer believes that with improved programing, more regulation, more taxes (on media and on the rest of us) educational and meaningful television can be revived. This all sounds feasible although I have no more interest in paying increased taxes or creating a larger public television empire any more than being forced to watch Madonna, Britteny or anyone else gyrate, dance, etc in order to sell me more Coke, records, football games etc.

I encourage anyone interested in controlling the tube and computers to read The Plug In Drug by Marie Winn, a much more balanced and ideologically-free look at the issue. Bottom line, turn off the TV and spend more time with your kids reading, talking, or playing. And start early; once media habits begin they are difficult to break.

Insightful, Honest, and Legitimate
This is a must read for anyone who plainly sees that "market values are not necessarily family values" and that the media has abused its priveledge to use our public airwaves for their short term market value. Peddling a sexist, violent, and materialistic world view to our children is not in the public interest. This book is a must read for every parent with a TV set.

Not worthy of a National Book Club
Very disappointed. Bought this book because of the Today Show Book Club award. Very sarcastic, mildly funny, but I am disappointed because the family structure here is completely simplified and unrealistic. I find Chris and Cathy to be spoiled and unlikeable. They have the rebel without a cause syndrome of rich spoiled kids who have never had a real tragedy in their lives. Not horrible, but definitely not worth the $14 I spent on it.

Six Stars
I've given five stars to other books in the past, and now I'm sorry. I wish I had a sixth star to give to The Sleeping Father. This is the top of the line.

There is something lurking beneath the surface of this book that is so funny and true and understated and delicious. The point of view is bizarre to great effect. We are sometimes zoomed in, given glimpes of characters' deepest feelings and thoughts and other times zoomed way out to a very broad, distant description. Sharpe uses this technique brilliantly.

You will remember this book's characters--ascerbic, deeply teenaged Chris, Cathy the Jewish Catholic-wannabe, their father, Bernard who is the living personification of funny and sad all at once.

You may not realize that the plot is moving forward. It might feel like you're ambling through the pages, enjoying scalding commentary on modern life, but you're actually heading somewhere.

Enjoy the ride.

Literary Excellence
This book reads like a memoir, and I sop love real life stories of trial and tribulation, and yet has touchs of funniness within the pages. The dysfunctional family, trying to understand what went wrong and try and try and fix it...all leads up to a wonderfully well composed book.
