Excellent Overview of Theatre Sound
John Leonard's Theatre Sound is an excellent read for everyone from the beginner to an advanced sound designer. The refreshing material in his book isn't overloaded with technical jargon, but goes over everything for a full understanding of the subject. It's also loaded with thoughts on theory, from sound effect design to speaker localization. A very good read, and highly recommended!

Second to none! A classic text for the EE or Physicist
Regrettably too soon out of print after first published in 1970. The Bible for small-signal FETs (does not cover power FETs). Contains 3 Parts which includes 13 very-full chapters. Part 1: Fabrication. Discusses materials and techniques including JFETs, MOSFETs, and thin-film FETs. Part 2: Theory and Properties. Here's the meat unsurpassed by any book since published. Covers more than you want to know (or could absorb) about the abrupt junction FET, 3 & 4 terminal FETs, including charge analysis, small signal h-f properties, noise, capacitances, inversion, etc. and similar discussion of the properties of MOSFETs. Part 3 focuses on applications and nothing is left out! And all good books are known for their Appendices. This book is a must for anyone involved with small-signal Field-Effect Transistors.

This is bound to be a classic
This is a book of tremendous value for analysts and therapists involved in the practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. The collection of authors and their personal struggles in and out of the consultation room provides a rich and seldomly seen view of how life touches the therapist and the patient.

The Toxic Action of Marine and Terrestrial Alkaloids

A Masterpiece Of Toxicological And Ecological Work.
After perusing through the contents of this textbbok, I have two words to describe it: Superbly Written! Blum serves as the editor of this superbly written scientific text and it gives the reader more than expected.

Unlike many other textbooks and novels written on this same subject, this text goes deep and gives the reader an abundant supply of educational information in the Ecotoxicity fields dealing with terrestrial and marine organisms.

Moreover, this text does not attemnpt to bore the reader with a proliferation of huge words and non-connecting statements, but rather it breaks down each ecotoxicological reaction to its simplest form so that reader will be able to follow along as to what is actually taking place. This text also gives detailed explanation for all reactions taking place within a biosystem as to allow the reader the chance to experience what is actually taking place.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 5 being an average rating, this textbook rates an whopping 10+ because it leaves basis of ecotoxicity uncovered and it gives a scientific explanation for chemical exposure of selective agents in the terrestrial and marine systems.

Toxicants in the Aqueous Ecosystem
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (27 June, 1997)
Author: T. R. Compton
Amazon base price: $190.00

Valuable information
This book contains valuable information organized in a manner more suitable to an overview of various topics within the subject area rather than a ready reference format. In that regard, the Preface provides overviews of the subject coverage for each chapter in addition to a detailed Table of Contents. The book is indexed in detail and allows the user to search toxicant to organism and from organism to toxicant, however, it does not work as well going from organism to toxicant. The index uses general terms such as fish, sea creatures, and algae, and, therefore, the user can not look up a specific species in the index. For example, if users wanted to know the accumulation of "tetramethyl lead in rainbow trout" [table 2.3], they would have to look up "tetramethyl lead, accumulation of" in the index and not "fish" or "trout." The specificity of the information in the book varies considerably from table to table whether it is covering species by species, "organisms other than fish" [table 5.7] or taxonomic classes of "creatures other than fish," [table 8.13]. Additional topics included in the five appendices are: ranges of metal concentrations in water; radionuclides in fresh and sea waters; sediment composition; toxicants in sea organisms; and potable water composition.

Although thoroughly referenced, there are errors in the reference lists of this book. The format used by this book [author, title, volume, beginning page, and year] is less forgiving than some others when attempting to decipher partial or partially incorrect citations. This is further complicated by the fact that many of the sources are 25 or more years old leaving the user less options for searching electronic resources (with their more sophisticated field combinations) and more time culling through paper. It is difficult to expound on errors in this brief review. The variety of types of errors in the citations in this book include: incorrect spellings within primary and secondary author's names, omission of authors, incorrect volumes, incorrect journal titles, and inconsistency in format (most journal titles spelled out in full, but some journal titles abbreviated). In this reviewer's opinion, many errors look as though they are attributable to 'cut and paste' carelessness or optical character recognition software (OCR) limitations. This lapse in editing and proofreading casts doubt upon the reliability of the editing, proofreading, and information found in this book. This title is cautiously recommended for academic libraries.

The Truth About Your Height : Exploring the Myths and Realities of Human Size and It's Effects on Performance, Health, Pollution, and Survival

A much needed objective and empowring voice
Samaras' book is an invaluable and rare resource for anyone wanting to explore the truths and myths around human height. We are all familiar with the assumption that taller is better, and have all lived with the consequences and prejudices (internal and external) of this assumption but height is a subject that is rarely discussed studdied or addressed.

As an engineer turned height researcher, Samaras takes a methodical approach to exploring this subject, showing that there are inherent advantages as well as disadvantages to all heights. Some of the chapters read like technical specs (complete with diagrams) so I cannot say that the book is a FUN read, but it does give the reader a multitude of tools for evaluating and appreciating the strengths of her or his body type.

For myself as a short person who had been given the message that my body was inferior this book gave me the essential tools to turn that view around and take my body back.

The Mysterious Orphans of Medicine Problem
For 100 years-and still today-surgical, obstetrical, and newborns have been mysteriously burned in the best hospitals under the care of some of the best surgeons and obstetricians. The first documented case was in 1901 at St. Vincents in New York City. Back then hospitals had charitable immunity could not be sued for negligence (most hospital care was free). People only went to a hospital as the last resort because surgery frequently resulted in death from infection. The FDA medical device database is bloated with all types of unexplained burns. At this moment a lawsuit is being filed for a mysterious burn (how many is unknown). The problem is not confined to the US but is worldwide.

Frank May's "Myths" is a "Must Read"
In "Unraveling the Seven Myths of Reading," Frank B. May has achieved the near impossible-- presenting the latest in reading research in a form that is an absolute pleasure to read. May, in his legendary style, invites the reader along on a veritable walking tour of key issues in reading and literacy instruction. The myths explored (and effectively resolved) include-- All Phonics Methods Are Equally Effective, Poor Readers Make the Most Mistakes, and (my personal favorite) Reading and Learning to Read Are More Cognitive Than Motivational. This much-awaited book is in perfect sync with such leading research as the Report of the National Reading Panel from NIH, and the publication Preventing Reading Difficulties. Frank May's "Myths" is an enjoyable translation of research into practice for teachers and other professionals in literacy education. It is a "must read."

Unspecial Effects for Graphic Designers

Unspecial is Very Special
One of the best graphic design books of all time has been re-published! Almost 20 years ago Bob Gill (who was one of the founders of Pentagram) wrote a book called "Forget All the Rules of Graphic Design", and now Graphis has published an updated version. Why is this book so good? While most graphic designers since the 80's have focused on making things look pretty (or not so pretty) Gill was part of a generation who thought that the focus of graphic design should be to communicate - and be clever at it!

Unlike "Forget All the Rules of Graphic Design" this new edition is small and can be read on a subway. Gill has added a few new examples of his work, and he has revised some old designs (including the cover design of the old book). The cover of book reads "If this book helps only one designer get one original idea, then all of the months I spent putting it together will not have been worth it.", while Bob Gill may suffer a slight case of ego - he has helped many people find new ideas and inspiration.
