21st CENTURY SOLUTIONS!
For once, a book is all it claims to be. The Superhormone Promise certainly is the definitive work on DHEA, Pregnenolone, Testosterone, Estrogen and Progesterone, Thyroid Hormone, Growth Hormone and Melatonin. It clearly explains the power of superhormones to boost immune systems, increase sex drive, strengthen bone and muscle, relieve depression & stress, enhance memory, reduce body fat, reverse aging, and much more. And the best news is that these I can vouch that these claims are true as far as DHEA, Pregnenolone and Melatonin are concerned (I haven't personally tried the others). I have been experimenting with the above-mentioned three hormones for the past four years and have achieved remarkable results. Pregnenolone is the best safe substance for increasing mind power and lifting depression, DHEA is superb for increasing the sex drive and providing energy, whilst Melatonin is my choice for a good night's sleep and for strengthening immunity. I have also found that by combining these with the use of free-form amino acids, the results are even more spectacular and impressive. I strongly recommend this book to all people aged 30 and over. It is easy to understsand and written in an engaging style so that it answers every possible question. There are various indexes and a good bibliography. I also recommend "The Amino Revolution" by Erdman & Jones and the various books by Dr Ray Sahelian, all available here on amazon.com

profiles in courage - 2000
the story of jacqueline roemmele and her life and death battle with this little understood, but highly hyped disease is a modern study of profiles in courage. her story is riveting and compelling; told from the survivor's perspecive in a way that minimizes the medical jargon normally associated with such literature. each and every one of the people included in her book are heros and should be respected as such for their dealing with such adversity. they are an inspiration to us all.

I was fortunate to find this book.
I must say, I am indebted to Colin Wilson for leading me to this book. I read Beyond the Outsider a few years ago, and immediately afterwards was itching to read this book. A.N Whitehead is a clear and logical thinker. A genius of the 20th century, his idea of the two modes of perception: Immediacy Perception and Causal Efficacy. Finally, I think, refutes 'successfully' Hume's theory that causation cannot be perceived.

SMC Review
Douglas Strong does an excellent job of explaining the environmental history of Lake Tahoe in a straight forward manner. This book puts in context the numerous issues confronting the lake and how these developed. I found the book quite interesting and very timely, given the renewed interest in preserving the clarity of the lake.

Build your library on biology starting with this book.
If you must have only one book in your library on biology, this is it. A bold statement, but when you bring together researchers with such a range of interest to discuss a simple amino acid you get more than just interesting lectures on the "hot topic" of today.

Read the introductions for the chapters and you find a wealth of information, not obscured by technical jargon.

Follow the authors through experimental design; view their results; question their interpertations and see if your own conclusions agree with theirs. This is science at its best; based on observation, intuition, cleverly designed experiments and interpertation of results. And, a look to the future.

Taurine is Mother Natures best example of how to recycle. How else is it explained how taurine has involvement in so many systems that can be summarized under the term "environmental protection". But this is the environment of the diverse cells of warm and cold blooded species, from man to the beautiful star-fish.

Thalidomide and the power of the drug companies
Published in Unknown Binding by Penguin (1972)
Author: Henning Sjöström
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Thalidomide - lest we forget!
The story of the drug thalidomide is returning to public interest after a gap of three decades. This book tells the shocking history of the drug's initial introduction, and how the drug companies involved systematically tried to suppress the evidence that it caused permanent and serious nerve damage in patients who took it. Then it was discovered that it caused terrible birth damage, and all the countries where it was supplied found large numbers of babies being born with arms and legs missing or badly damaged, with damage to sight and hearing taking place as well. This book is the most thorough and powerful account of how commercial interests overrode basic humanity and decency. Profit mattered more than people's lives. A story as relevant today as when it was first told.

Surviving the Extremes: A Doctor's Journey to the Limits of Human Endurance

Medical case studies can be fascinating to read, full of drama, heroism, and sometimes tragedy. Most doctors' tales take place in clinics or hospitals, but those pedestrian settings are not for Kenneth Kamler, who practices medicine outside, patching people up with surprising success under harrowing conditions. Surviving the Extremes starts with open-air surgery in the steamy jungles of the Amazon River, moves to disturbingly detailed descriptions of the many ways humans can die at sea, and from there takes white-knuckled readers through the rest of Earth's extreme environments. Krakauer fans will gasp at the book's best chapter, covering the high-altitude medical feats Kamler has performed on Mt. Everest and other peaks. "No course in medical school taught me the proper mixture of oxygen, IV fluids, and Tibetan chants to treat a subdural hematoma in below-zero temperatures on a 3-mile-high glacier," Kamler writes. Instead, he has learned the fine art of adventure doctoring by doing it, and in the process, he's won fans among the world's most prominent risk-takers. Through it all, Kamler remains fascinated by the human body's ability to heal under horrifically dangerous conditions. His medical adventures are inspiring and thrilling, as well as occasionally bloody and disgusting. In short, perfect stories of human survival. --Therese Littleton

Not what I expected.
This is a book mostly on elementary anatomy. If you are looking for exciting and suspenseful stories, buy another book. There are a lot of fabricated scenarios and theories from past events rather than actual live experiences as indicated on the book jacket. This book was written in National Geographic style. The majority of the book describes the environment of each situation. I purchased the book to read about the real life threatening situations, not to read about the landscape or anatomy.

This is what "survival" really means!
I make my home in a place that can challenge the human body. Alaska is a land of extremes-altitude, cold, sheer geological scale. Human survival in the Alaskan outdoors is dependent upon proper clothing and equipment, careful planning, and physical conditioning. But even then, people make mistakes and end up in trouble. Sometimes, they end up dead.

How does the human body cope with the effects of exhaustion, the extremes of hunger or thirst, the crushing pressure of the ocean's depths, and the burning heat of the barren desert? Microsurgeon Kenneth Kamler, MD has forged a career out of understanding the body's reactions to these extremes, and the medical procedures that can help when things go wrong.

Dr. Kamler was on Everest in 1996 during the tragic climb profiled in the books INTO THIN AIR and THE CLIMB, and in his own 1998 book A DOCTOR ON EVEREST. He treated climber Beck Weathers, the climber left for dead near the summit who survived terrible frostbite to his hands and face. He has performed intricate hand surgery in the mud of a rainforest jungle, and has treated a patient in an underwater habitat on the ocean floor. In his new book SURVIVING THE EXTREMES: A DOCTOR'S JOURNEY TO THE LIMITS OF HUMAN ENDURANCE, Dr. Kamler writes compellingly of the mental and physiological elements that combine to determine who lives and who dies when the human body is faced with extremes of altitude, temperature, heat, cold and pressure.

This book is fascinating, compelling, and explains what the concept of "survival" really means within the context of the body's ability (and failure) to cope with extreme environments. Do not miss it!
