Authors: Jill Baron and Paul R. Ehrlich
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

A sober and comprehensive survey
Capably edited by Jill S. Baron (Ecosystem Ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University, Fort Collins), and enhanced with an informative four-page Foreword by Paul R. Ehrlich (Bing Professor of Population Studies and President of the Center for Conservation Biology, Department of Biological Science, Stanford University), Rocky Mountain Futures: An Ecological Perspective is a sober and comprehensive survey of the tremendous impact human influence has had on the Rocky Mountain ecosystems. Featuring case studies, cascading effects, human-driven changes and more, this seminal and authoritative compilation of researched essays by educated authors paints an accurate and documented picture of an ecology being pushed beyond its limits, and then offers succinct, practical, and occasionally inspired ideas on what to do about it before it's too late. Rocky Mountain Futures is an essential, fundamentally critical addition to any personal, professional, governmental, organizational, academic, or community library Environmental Studies reference collection and supplemental reading list.

An Interesting Collection of Ideas
This is one of the very few books that ever changed the way I look at things. I don't agree with all of the author's opinions (and he doesn't ask me to), but after reading this I doubt I'll ever look at humanity's relation to "Nature" - or even the idea of seperation of the two - the same way again.

Beautiful work
Although not everything presented here is incredibly scientific, it is all incredibly interesting (that is, if you are interested in what researchers have to present about marijuana). A great book to have lying around to look through when you get bored.

A Wonderful Look at a Precious Landscape
This book takes us through the year in the tallgrass prairie, from the first awakenings of spring, through the glory of summer, the last blooms of autumn, and the dormancy of winter. It helps us appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of this special ecosytem, both in its informative, well-written text and beautiful line drawings. It will appeal to both children and adults.

Secrets of 5-HTP - Winifred Conkling
This book was very clearly written and gives an easy to understand discription of the uses of 5HTP and how it effects you body, mood and behavior. the author discribes in layman terms the role of serotonin in your body, how it is absorbed into the brain, and how to naturally raises the serotonin level to effect weight lose, depression, insominia, anxiety and more.

In the writing the author breaks the chapters into subject areas, depression, eating disorders, and other health problems providing questions and discriptions to help identify if your problem should be treated and if 5 HTP can possibly help. The chapters include important addresses where additional information and help can be obtained.

The book includes appropriate warnings, description of side effects, as well as explanations on how to use 5 HTP. The last chapter includes specific health tips on diet, exercise and life style all presented in a clear educational, non-preaching manner.

This book is a good quick read packed with useful information if you are considering non-perscription alternatives (5HTP) for addressing weight loss, depression, insomnia, anxiety and more...... at $5.99 suggested retail price, go for it.

Select Topics in Laser-Matter Interaction (The Stefan University Press Series on Frontiers in Interdisciplinary physicS)
Published in Hardcover by Stefan University Press (April, 2002)
Author: V. Stefan
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Laser Matter Interaction.Up-to-date research reference.
In recent years, the study of laser-matter interaction has been without
any doubts one of the most rapidly evolving field in the physical
sciences. One of the main factor for such enormous interest and large
scientific production is certainly the invention, at the beginning of
the '90s, of the "Chirped Pulse Amplification" (CPA) technology which
has allowed the generation of very short pulses (in the ps and fs
duration range) with very high energy per pulse. Hence it has been

possible to produce laser powers in the Petawatt range, and laser
intensities on target so high that the free electrons, created by the
rapid ionization of the target material, practically do oscillate in the
laser field at the velocity of light. This has opened the new domain of
"relativistic plasma physics" to experiments, while just a few years
ago it just appeared as theoreticians' speculations.
New experiments and theoretical models have opened new perspectives not
only for the fundamental studies of nature, but also for fruitful
applications. Short-pulse high-intensity lasers appear to be possible
future sources of energetic electrons and ions and of radiation (X and
gamma ray). These might be used for a new approach to Inertial
confinement Fusion ("fast ignition"), for new schemes of accelerators,
for time resolved X-ray crystallography (to be used, for instance, on
proteins), and even as a possible tool for treating cancers (laser
proton therapy).

Since this field is still very new, not many books have appeared yet
which deal with such subjects. Therefore the book "Science and
Technology of Laser-Matter Interaction 2000" is an useful tool to cover
these new topics. It contains the reports from a conference held in July
2000 in La Jolla, California, in the series "Frontiers in
Interdisciplinary Physics". Of course, it is not a surprise that about
half of the contributions are concentrated on the topic of Short-pulse
high-intensity laser-matter interactions, in particular containing two
interesting reports respectively on the production of relativistic
electrons and the acceleration of collimated beams of ions.
The remaining contributions in the book do concentrate on topics which
are related to Inertial Confinement Fusion, reporting the last
achievements on implosion physics obtained at the Omega laser facility
(at the University of Rochester) currently the largest laser system in
the world, as well as some new scientific results on kinetic theory,
radiation-hydrodynamics, Brillouin instability, Thomson scattering,
fusion plasmas.

In conclusion this book is a valuable up-to-date research reference
which may be useful for active researchers in the field as well as for
graduate and advanced undergraduate students.
