all what you need
An excellent reference on neuromodulators and transmitters. The book provides the most comprehensive review of the field available. The concept of the book is to give in short chapters an overview of the biosynthesis of neuromodulators and transmitters, followed by a description of the localization of these substances and their receptors in the brain. Last but not least, the different subtypes and their biological action are described in a excellent way.
- a must have for neuroscientists !

A Remedy for Western Medicine
Following the concepts he presents in The Science of Homeopathy, theorist George Vithoulkas presents a new paradigm ofhealth and illness that goes beyond Western medicine's limited view of the human organism and the true sources of disease. This book is required reading for anyone having an academic or clinical interest in homeopathy and for those interested in the science and theory of a truly holistic oriented approach to illness and health. Although this book might be somewhat difficult to comprehend and digest for the layperson, it's well worth the challenging read.

In this text, Vithoulkas relates many of our current diseases such as cancer, aids, asthma, epilepsy, schizophrenia and dementia (along with many others) to the weakening of the immunity system and discusses the role of the overprescription of drugs such as antibiotics in this process.

I agree with Vithoulkas. Only when Western medicine incorporates homeopathic principles into its system and integrates the role of the psyche, spirit and emotions into theories of illness and health can we begin to develop more holistic forms of treatment.

Right to Quiet recommendation
The Right to Quiet group offers the following recommendation at their web site. "Is there evidence that noise can make us sick? Yes, though much of it is buried in scholarly journals. We know of only one book in print: Noise & Health, edited by Thomas H. Fay.... This book presents a critical and comprehensive review of available world literature on the effects of noise on all of the body's systems. It defines noise and its sources, documents the specific health hazards of noise on the body and indicates needs for further research."

Nuclear Weapons and Their Effect

Very informative
This little book explains in detail what nuclear weapons can do.

As casual readers, most of us have only the slightest idea of what an atomic bomb means. The deepest impressions may be only from the actual pictures of the little Bombs, back in 1945.

This book, based on extensive, in-depth, and up-to-date research, tells in exact detail of how a nuclear bomb works - from the basic physics to the various effects to how to do the best to avoid the damages.

This book is originally part of a series for the Royal Academy. It is also very good reading material for the ordinary reader who is interested in understanding the awesome destructive power man possesses. It is guaranteed to totally satisfy one's curiosity on the subject.

The book is kind of hard to find. But if you come across one copy, by all means, get it - you won't find a second one.

Nutritional Influences on Mental Illness: A Sourcebook of Clinical Research

A "must" for human service professionals and parents
This book contains a myriad of studies, case reports, theoretical discussions on the effects of nutrition on the major mental disorders. The author clearly points out that the book is not intended for self diagnosis and treatment. However, the ideas are so powerful that many can use some of the ideas for just that purpose. For example, ADHD children don't handle tartrazine (F&D yellow) very well. It chelates out zinc which is needed for many brain metabolic processes, including making omega-3 fatty acids available to the brain, which are also in short supply in ADHD children, in bipolar patients, in depressed patients, and alcoholics. So now we have a logical explanation why many ADHD children react poorly to food colorings and why omega-3 fatty acid supplementation doesn't necessarily help all ADHD children. Here is another one. Excess phosphorus in the diet increases aggressve behavior of ADHD children. This comes from processed meats, cheeses, and colas, among other things. The book is filled with so many mind wrenching surprises that any professional or parent who reads it with an open mind will be unable to continue with business as usual. Too bad the book didn't get published in time for Karen Carpenter. She could have increased her survival chances by simply taking a zinc supplement. After reading this book, I am convinced that the day is coming when we will be looking at today's methods of treating mental disorders and comparing it with discredited practices from a century ago. This book has changed my fundamental views of "mental" disorders which are not "mental" at all, but which are physical "central nervous system disorders."

On the Success of Failure Synopsis
This book is about the practice of grade retention in elementary school, a particularly vexing problem in urban school systems, where more than half of the students may repeat a grade. On the Success of Failure addresses the question of whether repeating a grade is helpful or harmful when children are not keeping up. It describes the school context of retention and evaluates its consequences by tracking the experiences of a large, representative sample of Baltimore school children from first grade through middle school. In addition to evaluating retention's consequences, the book describes the peers' dispersion along many different educational pathways over this eight year period, retention's relation to other forms of educational tracking (such as reading group placements in the early primary grades and course level assignments in middle school), and repeaters' academic and school adjustment problems before they were held back. Focusing on the experience of first, second and third grade repeaters, the volume finds largely positive effects for retention.
