Amazing.
I have been studying film history for over 30 years and never have I been privy to a more avant garde and well supported book. Bukatman certainly knows his material, and takes the genre of science fiction to a new high. Kudos, Bukatman!

Powerful Insights and Advice
A lot of authors talk about what's happening in organizations. But Gilles Robert actually conducted interviews and research with organizations and discovered the trends first hand. For me, that gives his book an added boost of credibility.

The book is divided into nine major sections that tackle different aspects of organizational dynamics. So you can go into any one that's of interest. He's got a great bibliography at the back and who knows? Perhaps soon other authors will be quoting him!

Finally, as a productivity consultant I could identify with his wisdom on measuring performance as the first step to making improvements. But even measurement isn't the first step. The first step should be to read Maximum Effect for some powerful insights.

Intensity is the key!
This is an excellent book for the serious or the weekend athlete or someone who works-out. It's not a book of follow my 12 week progarm, but for an experienced fitness practioner. It's insights, tips, and guides about strength, endurance, flexibility and how to achieve your best are very useful. Writing is very conversational and it's anecdotal examples give you the feel he is talking to you. In short, the book gives you the key to better performance--intensity, specificity, and consistnecy. Nothing new--but how many practice all three!

Meaning, not placebo: Moerman gets it right!
As a family physician and behavioral scientist with strong interest in the "placebo effect", I can say without reservation that this is one of the best all-around reviews available. The "placebo paradox" has confounded reductionist thinkers for decades: if there is nothing in the pill, then how can it cause health effects? Dan Moerman doesn't have to take us far out of the conventional box to show that - of course - it isn't the inert pills, but instead the meanings attached with them that have influenced outcomes in so many scientific experiments. Meaning, belief and understanding govern how we think and feel, which in turn effect our physical and psychological health. Empty colored pills, sham surgery and suggestion lead to real health effects, even under the most rigorous of settings: randomized, double-blind, controlled trials. While reasonably comprehensive and highly accurate, this book is also accessible, as it is written with a style and flair that should prove attractive to most readers. Highly recommended it is!

Great novel approach
This is a great new approach to determining the impact of information on the outcomes of military combat. The results of this work are well presented, allowing the reader to understand how the theory can be applied outside the example scenarios presented.

Book Notes by Keith Reeves
Book Notes by Keith Reeves from the Spring 1996 edition of the Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics (Volume 1, Number 2, page 134): "Employing a multiple-method research case study approach (a prescreening mail survey, in-depth interviews with a panel of registered voters, and content analysis of local and national media coverage), the author examines how 'attack journalism' influenced the candidate preferences of voters in teh 1992 U.S. presidential campaign. The central research questions concern the following: Do attack news items reach all voters regardless of political interest and media access? Does attack journalism affect individual vote choice? Dividing his panel of voters into four groups, depending upon both their interest in politics adn their access to media, Cavanaugh finds that attack journalism tends to catalyze interest of voters across each group rather uniformly; attack journalism, however, does not influence voters' candidate preferences across the four groups uniformly."

A Clinical Pharmacist from Boston
Medication errors is a virtual encylcopedia on medication errors. This text provides a strong theoretical background and numerous practical tips for reducing medication errors. The book expands the definition of medication errors beyond the well-known "five rights" of medication administration. Medication errors also include a failure to detect drug interactions, too rapid rates of administration, and poor patient adherence to treatment instructions. I highly suggest this book for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, hospital administrators, risk managers, and pharmacy technicians.

For as long as they've been in existence, horror and sci-fi movies have relied on special effects and makeup to make the unreal seem real. In Men, Makeup, and Monsters: Hollywood's Masters of Illusion and FX, Fangoria editor Anthony Timpone presents profiles a dozen of today's most brilliant practitioners of the art and science of effects. Artists such as Stan Winston, Rick Baker, and Dick Smith have made everything from aliens to dinosaurs to zombies come alive on the screen, employing a staggering variety of techniques. In their conversations with Timpone, Winston and company explain how they accomplished dozens of their most notable effects, which involve the use of makeup, appliances, puppetry, robotics, CGI, animatronics, and more. Abundant photos (including a color section) show both finished products and works in progress.

Men, Makeup, and Monsters is aimed not just at curious movie fans, but also at prospective practitioners of the trade. Timpone's introduction includes straightforward explanations of basic industry terminology and procedures, and gives a realistic picture of what it takes to break into this increasingly competitive business. Appendices include a glossary and a directory of makeup schools.

Movie fans who routinely leave the theater asking, "How did they do that?" will find this detailed look behind the illusions absorbing, and will come away with as much admiration for the artists as for the effects they create. --Mary V. Burke
