This book is a valuable resource for faculty and administrators who are involved in redefining learning, policies, and practices. Each powerful chapter focuses upon these choices and challenges that will guide us in building a new system of higher education.

The authors goal in writing this book is apparent in every chapter as he "assists the reader in developing a more complete understanding of how teaching and learning, knowledge generation and preservation, organizational design and evalulation, and leadership can all function together within a changing and increasingly competitive external environment to produce a new responsiveness and diversity within higher education". This, coupled with the information on advanced techologies for teaching and learning, makes this book one to read. It is a great book that will indeed enlighten you with the choices, challenges and changes necessary in Higher Education.

Donald Hanna and his supporting authors have done a fine job illuminating some of the interesting aspects and issues of the growing technological world of higher ed. I enjoyed the organization of the book. It is a compilation of interesting essays on various topics, all of which are relevant to the online university.
I found Chapter 3-Advanced Technologies and Distributed Learning in Higher Education by Chis Dede to be facinating. This sort of vision and creativity to picture what is possible is essential in moving us forward into new and uncharted territory. Dede offers "vignettes" to illustrate creative uses of technology for distributed learning and visions of how technology may be used in the future. These sort of changes have the possibility to make substaintial changes to the higher education model.
Other chapters such as Chapter 8-Who Owns Knowledge in a Networked World? by John Tallman offer current practical knowledge. As a professional engaged in course development, it is valuable to become knowledgable regarding such issues. As questions and debates arise as to the equitable ownership and allocation of revenue from distance learning materials, it is important that faculty are well-versed in the applicable laws.
Chapters such as Chapter 10-Global Access to Learning: Gender, Poverty, and Race by Janet Poley address concerns of equity and ethics. It is essential that these conversations occur now during the development of digital learning. Some choices and decisions can not be undone. It's important that each twist and turn in the growing path of distance education is subjected to thoughtful consideration. The potential benefit to everyone is great. But also the potential to further alienate certain populations exists. Only through careful consideration can the appropriate foundation be laid to benefit all.
Overall, this book addresses some facinating and pressing issues in the growing world of distance education. There are many facets to consider and various points of view. Hanna's book is a great place to start the conversation.

Higher Education in and Era of Digital Competition did an excellent job of explaining the current atmosphere of higher education. Although long, 347 pages, this book is very well organized and covers a wide range of topics, including emerging organizational models, leadership, and redefining faculty policies and practices. The overt theme of the book is to relate advances in technology to their current and future impact on Institutes of Higher Education from the perspective of the institution, the faculty, and the students. Yet, the book is also valuable for those entrepreneurs looking for opportunities and ventures in higher education.

Dr. Hanna presents the idea that universities need to evaluate, analyze, and evolve their current practices to reflect the current educational environment. Dr. Hanna has done an excellent job bringing together experts, such as Dr. Chris Dede a nationally recognized leader in Distributed Learning Environments, to contribute thoughts, views, and opinions to this book. The contributing authors did an excellent job of interweaving five main themes through out the book to organize and clarify the current educational situation. Furthermore, Dr. Hanna concludes the book with his opinions on educational impact as well as his proposed challenges to university administrators, faculty, and students.

I really enjoyed this book and have enthusiastically recommended it to our composers and sound designers. I consider it the closest thing to a "bible" for our work as it knits together the artistic and technical roles of music and sound in storytelling on the screen.

This is a fantastic book. David Sonnenschein is an oracle of sound. I really like the way that he covers both the commercial applications of designing sound and music for Film & Media and also the creative and even spiritual dimensions of working with sound & music. Speaking as someone who works within this sector, if one day I have anything like the understanding of sound, that Sonnenschein has, I will be a happy man !

From the effects of mantras, ragas and the subconscious chantings of the american indians to voice overs, step by step guides on building sound designs, advice on how to conference with directors, the film industry and a whole range of practical and technical applications within the field - this is a truly comprehensive book. Written by a man with an obvious glut of knowledge and experience right accross the board.

If you are new to sound design get this book - it is easy to read, accessible and extremely informative. If, on the other hand, you are an experienced musician or sound designer get this book - you will learn things that you may not have even considered before and find the inspiration to try new things.

If you work or are interested in working in this field - I cant recomend it enough. Carry it with you on the train, have it handy in the studio, go to bed with it under your pillow !

With my attempt at becoming a Sound Designer I've found that there are not many books that pin-point all the aspects as this one does. Mr. Sonnenschein has written my Bible! Beginning to end this book is packed with specific examples from many different types of film and comments from the top people in the bussiness. It also gives you projects that can be done on your own. It covers everything that can be heard on a soundtrack. An absolute MUST for anyone interested in sound design and should be required reading for anyone involved in film.

I had this collection of short stories thrust on me by one of my favorite ex-students when I was complaining that "there was nothing new good to read". She told me to stop whining & give it a try & I am VERY glad that she did. From the funny-but-heart-wrenching title piece to the wonderful portrait of Darwin in heaven (he is doing just fine until he is joined by a totally Tiggerish Richard Feynman!) Whitty never misses a beat. I read the whole book in one sitting & am waiting for more with some impatience. These are short stories for Thinking People who still have a sense of humor!

wow! I loved this book. Julia Whitty is an artist. She paints these lush, passionate, mysterious gems. I found her weaving of nature and chacters and story telling so compelling. I couldn't put it down until the end and even then I didn't want the spell to be broken. She is so orginial and so touching. Please, somebody tell me she has another book coming out soon!

Andrew Isenberg, professor of History at Princeton University, has produced a brilliant monograph documenting the relationship between the Plains Indians, whites and the bison that once thrived on the Great Plains.
Isenberg carefully presents the ecology of the Great Plaines, demonstrating how tenuous the environment is to begin with: drought and fires can easily destroy the short grass that the bison depend on, causing sudden fluctuations in the herds. Given the already sensitive nature of the bison population, Isenberg then discusses the effect of human hunting.
Many readers, accostomed to thinking of the Plains Indians as ancient cultures, practicing a lifestyle as old as time, will be surprised to learn that the tribes of the great plains were largly recent developments. The introduction of the horse in the late 17th century dramatically altered the lifesyles of the plains tribes. Now that horses could be used to follow the bison herds year round, many groups abandoned agriculture and became full time bison hunters.
Isenberg documents the rise of trade networks, and the material wealth that Indians were able to accumulate in the beaver and bison pelt trade. Isenberg argues that Indians increasingly exploited the bison in a non-substainable fashion, thus dramatically weakening the bison population by the mid 19th century. Thus white hunting, which escalated in the 1870s to fill the demand for bison leather machine belts, was merely a coup de grace for the already decimated herds.
Isenberg's thesis rather explodes the old myth that Indians were always ecologically sensitive people who cared meticulously for their rescources. Yet in the end, his message is one of environmental responsibility, as he narrates a tragic case study of unsubstainable environmental exploitation. The book is well crafted and highly readable, and recommended for all interested in the American West.

Andrew Isenberg's "The Destruction of the Bison" shows that the interaction between ecology, culture and economy contributes the the destruction of bison. Unlike most historians who contributes the environmental degradation to Euro-Americans, Isenberg shows that Native Americans also play a role in modifying the ecology. He is able to show how introduction of horses, made Native Americans became more mobile and therefore were able to hunt the bison while riding their horses.

Initially, the Natives hunted for subsistence but later were drawn into the market-oriented economic system and were trading the bison's skin for other European products. Gradually, bison became nearly decimated.

This is an incredible book in this survey of the history of the North American bison population and is very well-written. He organizes this book well and is very readable. Even if readers who do not have prior knowledge of bison or is unfamiliar with the field of environmental history, this book will not pose any difficulty for understanding the complex relationship between human and the environment around them.

So often, we tend to think of the near-extinction of the Bison as having been solely caused by overhunting by the fur trade. This book shows the intensely interwoven cause and effect relationships that led to massive changes, not only for the Bison, but for the Native Americans as well. The scope of this book is so much larger than just the destruction of the Bison - it addresses the full range of effects that Westward Expansion had on the plains. To gain a better understanding of the ecological dynamics at play between the Bison, the indigenous tribes, the settlers and the environment - this book is a must.

This is truly a fascinating, life changing book. If you are willing to change your beliefs, this book will alter forever the way you view health and your innate capacity to heal yourself. Author Kuby does an incredible research job, and writes with such clarity--this book will revolutionize the way people look at the medical industry, and prompt them to take more responsibility for their own health. It is very good to see these ideas put into print in a way that anyone can understand and benefit from.

I read this book with a bit of skepticism about the topic but it didn't take me long to be convinced that you definitely have the power to heal yourself.

Dr. Kuby cured herself of breast cancer and lived with the lump for 8 years with absolutely no pain or problems.

Her book is an encouraging and well-written account of the power we all possess to heal ourselves.

It is one of the best books on the market for those interested in medicine and health.

I have yet to find a book to compare it to with regard to dispelling the myth of Doctor as G-D. The most enduring quote from the book, regarding the Hippocratic Oath, was "First, do no harm" which encapsulates the ideology behind this most wonderful book.

This excellent book has changed my life, helping me to become a happier person and putting me on the road to my first good relationship. As I was reading it, I would come to new chapters and say, "well this certainly doesn't apply to me" (e.g. "Idealization of the Family"), but I quickly learned that those chapters did indeed apply. I now refer to it as my Bible because I so often talk about it to my friends and encourage them to read it. The section on Theoretcial Issues is probably too academic for most readers, and I am skeptical about how much schizophrenics can really be helped by these techniques. But I think the general population would be greatly helped by the ideas in the book.

One of the best, most powerful books ever writen. Reading this book will be painful, but worth it. It's worth at least 10 years of therapy.

This collection is among my favorites published in recent years. Janet McAdams lyrically links the personal with the political. Her work is engaging, memorable, passionate, yet not didactic--some poems will even keep you awake at night. Many poems reward multiple re-readings. I'm already looking forward to her next book.

This Island of Lost Luggage is wonderful. Janet McAdams's poems are lyrical and gritty at the same time, swollen with life, drenched with place, and she never seems to take the easy way in or out. Highly recommended!

As a poet myself, I can only stand in awe of the work in "Island of Lost Luggage." Janet Mc Adams is a major talent. I've turned my initial envy of her gift into a goad to write better and wider myself.

On Jan. 23/00 I was waxing and waning on the merits of this bio-balance approach to addiction. Well , confession time ; I wrote that the day I severed the bond (33 years) with nicotine How - Zyban - if that is O.K. to mention .... but somehow ,in someway , that particular concotion ... ( its really wellbutrin), did everything that Ruden talks about.... it is definitely in the neuro-chemical balance in the brain; for me it worked; it cut the chord so to speak; ever since I can decide that I do not wish, desire or want to smoke......and 347 days later still agree with delightful easement. If only the medical establishment would get serious and start doing some baseline metabolic type test : why did it work on me and not on .. Joe or Mary ???? Letsget with it!

Finally , something on , about addictions that seems to hit the proverbial nail on the head. A forward assault on the bottom line of'addiction' ..the craving brain .....the complex of neuro-chemicals , especially dopamine and serotonin , and the yin/yang; up.down ; getting the right balance. Presented as a theory ... as such holds the potential as a very fruitful theory.
