Excellent subject matter coverage
This book should be a must read for all med students as well as clinicians. It provides an unusually precise and clear link between what often appears as "common" symptoms and previously un-discussed causes such as food related chemicals, pesticides, chemical exposures, organic solvents and metals. Having seen many antidotal references in the pop literature to these issues, it is good to finally see an authoritative scientific text on the subject.

Islands in a Far Sea
Our first introduction to the Hawaiian Islands was in the early 1980's; since then we have been conducting research on the islands of Hawai'i and Kauai. Our long association with Hawai'i prompted us to develop a course: The Natural History of Hawai'i; taught by Jamie Deneris, Ph.D., College of Marin, Kentfield, California, and myself, Neil Marshall, Ph.D. College of Notre Dame, Belmont, California. This is a course that includes island biogeography, evolutionary biology, and the geology of oceanic islands. Our text is John Culliney's book, Islands in a Far Sea. This is a wonderfully, scholarly, but eminently readable book. It captures the essence of the geologic and biologic evolution of the Hawaiian Islands, presents the key points of island biogeography, and finally the impact of human activity. A fine book; this needs to be reprinted in a new edition.

A must-have resource guide to drugs
A non-judgemental, non-advocatory guide to every recreational drug one is likely to encounter. Laid out in encyclopedia format, its entries include physical and psychological effects, lethal dosages, dependency information, and other known issues regarding each substance. Although a bit dated (Quaaludes are obsolete, for example, and the newer "designer drugs" aren't listed), it's still an amazing resource. If more people had been given this book instead of "Just say no," there would probably be a lot fewer drug-related deaths.

A must read!
This is a must read. It is an intriguing novel that tells the tale of 3 men of different times and how their lives are connected across the span of history. It is not only for science fiction lovers, but those who like a good love story. The descriptions bring the characters to life and one can't wait to see what happens next. The concept is a plausible one which makes the possiblities chillingly real. Who knows what fate awaits mankind. The author takes you on a journey of what maybe has happened and what could happen. You will enjoy this book.

Laboratory Earth: The Planetary Gamble We Can't Afford to Lose (Science Masters Series)

Stephen H. Schneider is a big player in the study of global warming. As a climatologist at Stanford and as author and editor of several books on the greenhouse effect, including the Encyclopedia of Climate and Weather and Global Warming, his insights into the impact of industrial emissions on climate change influence policy makers and environmental activists alike. In Laboratory Earth, Schneider has digested the complex and quantitative details of global warming into an accessible overview of the scientific situation that never slides into simplification. The details of global warming can at times seem overwhelming, but Schneider's slim volume admirably attempts to tell this story with the sense of importance and immediacy he clearly believes it deserves.

Noted Climatologist Updates Global Warming Debate
LABORATORY EARTH simply and effectively describes the current status of research on the issue of climate change caused by human activities. The first part of the book summarizes the scientific basis for the conclusion that humans are currently raising the global temperature. The last part of the book discusses political and economic policy implications, as well as refuting arguments made within the last decade by scientists who have spearheaded the backlash against concerns about global warming. Schneider explains the scientific complexities of his specialty clearly. The book is part of the "Science Masters" series, which offers up-to-date understandings of various scientific disciplines by eminent scientists. LABORATORY EARTH will educate and enlighten without the tedium often found in more technical writing. This book should be on the reading list for the current debate about this planet's climate changes. END
