excellent review of a jeopardized social class
The author describes the decline and fall of a jeopardized social class: nobility in decadent modern France. Her account of the dispaired struggle for recognition of these eccentric and unfairly criticized creative individuals is positively thrilling. She obviously knows what's she's talking about.

The Animator's Guide to 2D Computer Animation (Focal Press Visual Effects and Animation)
Published in Paperback by Focal Press (December, 2000)
Author: Hedley Griffin
Amazon base price: $39.99
Average review score:

Excellent primer
This is a pithy and well-presented little book for people familiar with traditional hand-drawn animation who are just starting to venture into the realm of computer animation. Beginning with useful reviews of the leading software packages, Griffin walks you in detail through all the main steps involved in 2D computer animation, from initial planning through to film output, without getting bogged down in program-specific details.

This is not a how-to manual. It doesn't teach any secrets or tricks of computer animation, but gives the animator an excellent understanding of the process from start to finish. The illustrations are well-chosen and enhance the text.

The only criticism is that the accompanying CD is not highly useful. It contains only 2 short sample animations, and the rest are computer program demos, most of which are available in newer versions on-line. A simple list of links would have sufficed and the CD left out to keep the price down.

If you're just venturing into 2D computer animation, this book is an excellent place to start.

Annabelle's Wish
Published in Hardcover by Golden Books (20 October, 1997)
Author: Alan Nowell

Lasting Friendship and Holiday Spirit
In an age where children are coaxed by Sony Playstations, and the wintery outdoors; it's hard to find something simple that they can cuddle up with in the corner and quietly explore.

The story of Annabelle's Wish seems to facinate both younger children and more experienced level reader's.

Because its from Golden Books interactive series the child could "sound off" characters at any point in the reading. The book offers large bold illustrations, a clever plot twist, and original narration.

As all Christmas classics remind us, this book does make you think about the reason of the Season, and try to make your Heart feel warmer. It builds on the folklore of Santa giving the farm animals "voices" once a year on Christmas. And the friendship that builds between a mute boy and the calf, Annabelle, born on this Holiday.

Although Tommy and Annabelle are its main characters, the storey is about more than the "special" gift they exchanged. It was about how others around them put aside their personal differences to come together in Friendship.

Your child can easily relate to the animals and the frienships found in the storey. And if they understand what is being shown by "unselfish giving" recreate for your Family a special and powerful magic.

Anthropic Bias: Observation Selections Effects in Science and Philosophy (Studies in Philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (01 March, 2002)
Author: Nick Bostrom

Average review score:

Deep, thoughtful - and yet so funny book!
Why the universe is just so? The question has been posed by scientists and philosophers for millenia, but only very recently have we accumulated enough physical and astronomical knowledge to be able to discuss these issues in a serious and quantitative manner. And, lo and behold! what modern cosmologists began to explore in earnest is a sort of necessary link between our own existence as intelligent observers evolved from the simplest procaryote lifeforms over billions of years and the properties of universe (and other universes!) at large. This link is technically called an observational selection effect, and if from now on anybody wishes to seriously study these matters, "Anthropic Bias" is without question an excellent place to start.

Bostrom's book makes amusing, although at times quite exacting, reading. Early on, he gives a splendid overview of the entire field of anthropic reasoning, much used and abused in the last quarter of century. Then, almost imperceptibly, he passes on to several instances in which the nature of the anthropic selection effect becomes clearer and clearer. From quantum cosmology to annoying traffic jams, from quantum mechanics to Adam and Eve thought experiments, from freak observers created by black holes' evaporation radiation to the (in)famous Doomsday argument of Gott, Carter and Leslie (not to mention future totalitarian world government and paranormal causation), the book reads as an exciting detective novel, as you rapidly change settings following the same thread of evidence to the main culprit: the universal observational selection effect, explained in detail in the Chapter 10, arguably the culmination of the drama. Here, Bostrom develops a theory which promises a unifying treatment of observations, in particular in cosmology, explicating in detail the accompanying Bayesian methodology. The unity of the underlying analysis is emphasized in the final Chapter, where new theory is aplied in several fields of contemporary research.

Probably the worst thing one can say about this book is that it is too short. After finishing it, the reader is left with the impression that the very scope of the new theory is such that there is enough material for entirely another book, or at least reconsideration of many issues treated previously. The re-reading potential is thus very strong. The reader will also find some consolation for finishing the book in a detailed and cleverly composed bibliography. In any case, she or he will probably never think about the relationship of man and the universe in the same way as before.

Artificial Intelligence Human Effects by Yazdani Narayaman
This is an excellent reference on the workings of computerized
advice-giving systems. It is helpful in the interface between
physician interns and senior physicians and specialists.
A theme of the work is that people will be needed to attend
to patient social and physical care. An important benefit of
computerized advice giving systems is in reducing errors
of mis-diagnosis and giving the physician more intelligent
choices prior to selecting a final course of action.
