Radical Rejuvenation: The Revolutionary New System for Reversing the Effects of Ageing

A wonderful book!
Very positive and inspiring for those who want to try a healthier and more nutrient rich way of eating. Roxy Dillon's recommendation to use broad spectrum amino acids really does work - it even makes rough skin feel soft and supple. The book would be improved by having more recipes and advice for people to make the transition from eating "normal" to more raw food and how to deal with food cravings and how to eat in the "real" world. Lots of ideas and examples and the checklist of what you should be eating as an ideal each day is very useful.

First Rate
This is one of the best and most inovative books of its kind. I had a copy some years ago, but lent it to a friend who lent it to a friend etc. Now I want a copy and can't get one. I would have thought this would be a good time for a reprint with all the health consciousness around today. Roxy Dillon gives a fantastic coverage of all aspects of healthy living and rejuvenation techniques.

Creating a Paradigm Shift Toward Quality Management
Many biographies have been written about Hyman Rickover, the father of the Nuclear Navy, which focus on his dictatorial idiosyncrasies and leave the reader wondering how anyone could have ever worked for him. In "The Rickover Effect: How One Man Made A Difference" author Ted Rockwell discusses how Rickover's leadership style created a paradigm shift among all of the organizations he came in contact with focusing away from the status quo and toward operational excellence and high-reliability. Rockwell, who worked for Rickover from 1949 to 1964 and served as the Technical Director of the U.S. Naval Reactors Program (NR) between 1954 and 1964 is certainly in one of the best positions to discuss his perceptions of Rickover's personality, work ethic, and style.

One of the quotes from the book that impressed me very much was that Rickover questioned how people who admitted they could never have accomplished what he had done -- building the first atomic submarine from abstract concept to reality in record time - could question his leadership and management style. Critics generally focus on Rickover's demanding style as ruthless and insensitive, when in reality he was building a committed organization and shaking out those that were not as dedicated as he was. It is quite obvious that Rickover would never had asked anyone to do anything he was not willing to do.

Rockwell's story encompasses his recruitment out of the post Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge until Rickover's death. While Rockwell left the Naval Reactors program 1964, he continues to write about how Rickover's influence shaped his management and technological paradigm and allowed he and two of his co-workers at NR to open an engineering firm delivering outside of the Navy the same operational excellence and high-reliability systems they had developed in NR. Rockwell also discusses how leaving Rickover's program changed their relationship.

Rockwell's book is a pleasant read, as his story is not overly technical and draws readers into an appreciation of how the Naval Reactors program influenced work systems and quality management. This book should be of interest not just to those interested in the life of Hyman Rickover and the Nuclear Navy, but persons studying leadership and culture management, technological advancement, and the career of Ted Rockwell - one of the unsung heroes of nuclear technology. I also encourage readers to check out Rockwell's new book, "Creating the New World: Stories and Images From the Dawn of the Atomic Age."

Great View of this Special Man
This is an excellent insider account of Rickover's efforts and
accomplishments. Dr. Rockwell really makes the history come alive.

Highly regarded book
This book is highly spoken of by the participants in the adrenal threads of the thyroid discussion group at Healthboards.com. (Dr. Wilson's book, on the other hand, is considered interesting but not agreed with 100%).

Other hormone-related recommendations: for learning about thyroid problems, I highly recommend Mary Shomon's book as the best place to start. For a dense but incredibly comprehesive look at women's hormone issues, you can't beat Dr. Vliet.

If you have FMS, CFIDS, Addisons or low blood sugur--buy it.
"I feel wiped out--dead tired all the time." "The least little thing leaves me exhausted." "I can't even make the bed without collapsing." "The weakness, dizziness and brain fog are the worst."

If you've ever said these things to your doctor, or had a patient say them to you, then you need to own, "Safe Uses of Cortisone." This book is not about learning to get by and accept less out of life. It's not about using gentle new age exercises and expensive herbs to get over a serious medical condition. "Safe Uses of Cortisone" is about using safe, sane, normal, natural levels of adrenaline to correct very real and measurable medical problems.

While there is a fair amount of medical jargon in the book, the writing style is approachable, clear and easy to follow. For example, at the beginning of "Chapter 2: Sources of Confusion," Jefferies writes, "That cortisone and hydrocortisone are normal hormones of the adrenal cortex implies that in physiological dosages they must be safe." Doctors, and those with an interest biology, will have no trouble following the text.

Dr. Jefferies, with 1,000 patient years of experience using cortisone therapy, explains the sources of confusion about cortisone, the significance of normal adrenocortical function and accepted uses of physiological dosages. Then he goes on to discuss using cortisone in gonadal dysfunction, rheumatic disorders, allergies and other autoimmune disorders. He closes with chapters on respiratory infections and other conditions that could benefit from physiological dosages of glucocorticoids.

Them there is some big words, but well worth reading for anyone with chronic fatigue, allergies, Fibromyalgia, acne, mood swings, exercise intolerance, horrible menstrual periods or low blood sugar.

In this book, Dr. Jefferies makes an excellent case for the safety of cortisone in doses that mimic our natural levels. One thing he doesn't talk about is cost. The cost of cortisone is shocking--shockingly low. In 1998 dollars, without any help from insurance, this life saving hormonal therapy cost between $10 and $30 per month.

Buy this book. In fact, buy two copies and give one to your doctor or local library.

Fascinating
This book details the adventures of an ethnobotanist as he tries to uncover the mystery behind zombies in Haiti. In the beginning of the book, Davis describes how a New York psychologist named Nate Klein described to him the odd story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was pronounced dead and buried, yet showed up 18 years later back in the market place of his hometown claiming that he had been made a zombi and made to work as a slave until he escaped with some other zombies. Klein was completely convinced of the veracity of Narcisse's story, and wanted Davis to travel to Haiti to discover which herbs and other toxins were used to "kill" Narcisse and then bring him back to life again. Davis accepts the mission, and then travels to Haiti to investigate zombies and Haitian Voodoo. But in order to discover how people are changed into zombies, he has to first gain the confidence and respect of the Voodoo leaders. Davis eventually accomplishes most of what he set out to do, along the way relating much about Haitian history and culture as well as Voodoo beliefs. The book is very compelling and well documented, including an extensive annotated bibliography, as well as a glossary and index.

WHAT DO WE KNOW? BUGGER ALL UNTIL YOU'VE READ THIS!
YOU COULD GO TO THE TRAVEL AGENTS AND BOOK YOURSELF ON A FLIGHT TO SOME MICKEY MOUSE STYLE FUN PARK THATS ALREADY GETTING OUTDATED AND RUSTY AFTER 15 YEARS, HOWEVER IF YOU TRAVEL BY 'WADE DAVIS AIR' YOU WILL FIND LOCATIONS, SETTINGS, AND STORIES THAT YOU WOULD SAY ARE DEFINTELY NOT OF THIS WORLD. I HAD NEVER READ ANYTHING LINKED WITH THE VOODOUN RELIGION BEFORE, OR GIVEN IT MUCH THOUGHT OTHER THAN ITS SOME FARSICAL STAGESHOW, PUT ON BY CLEVER ILLUSIONISTS OF THE UNCIVILISED WORLD. WADE DAVIES TOOK ME BY THE HAND AND INTRODUCED ME TO THESE PEOPLE, AND THEIR WAYS. HIS BLEND OF ANALYSIS AND STORY TELLING LEFT ME WITH LITTLE DOUBT THAT WHAT THIS MAN HAS SEEN IS A DIFFERENT REALITY, A REALITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN CONVINCED TO OVERLOOK, AND DISMISS AS RUBBISH. ITS TIME TO OPEN OUR EYES, AND THIS BOOK HAS INSTILLED ME WITH THAT BELIEF.THE ONLY BAD THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THAT IT ENDS!

Delightful Insight
I too was a Peace Corps volunteer (99-01) working in Sierra de Agalta National Park and its surrounding communities. Mark's book wonderfully captures the "ornithophilia" of Olanchanos, and puts together a stong case for conservation at local scales that build upon existing needs and environmental concerns. A must have for all conservationists working in Honduras or anywhere else for that matter.

Sage Advice for Conservationists
Seven Names for the Bellbird goes beyond typical discussions of environmental problems in Latin America to show how real people and real birds interact in their shared landscapes. The wealth of details in Bonta's discussion makes a significant contribution to the study of human-animal interactions. Easily accessible and yet provocative, Bonta shows how conservation activities need to be based on local practices and control of resources--a lesson not just for environmentalists working in developing countries, but good advice for people working to protect their own neighborhoods.

Fascinating Perspective
The nine authors who each tackle a chapter provide a unique and fascinating insight into life, and more specifically, women's life at Los Alamos. This book is a must read for those interested in the cultural and social aspects of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos.

a marvelous compilation of reminiscences
This book, originally compiled during the early postwar years at Los Alamos, consists of reminiscences, letters, and essays by representative women who devoted their lives to the Los Alamos experience during World War II. A unique description of the Manhattan Project, it remains one of those disarming pieces of historical literature that make history such an engrossing field to wander into.

Excellent
This is the best still photography book I have found.
I recommend it to all photographers that want to know proffesional secrets and technics for still photography; and the price is really low for it.

Hicks and Schultz, what a team...
I spend allot of time in bookstores searching for useful, yes that's useful books on photography. Once you have long since gone beyond the ranks of amateur, newbie or intermediate and reached the shores of expert and semi pro, wanting to perhaps start making a living from this craft, you find that there is very little at all out there in the way of USEFUL works on the subject at this higher level.

I own great books in the area's where I usually shoot film - (Outdoor, Landscape, Night)- , which I have reviewed elsewhere for those who wonder, but the area of still life and special effects photography is something up until now I have left alone, having always been curious about. Still Life and Special Effects Photography by the above mentioned authors is a superb choice for those looking for an entry point into the professional or fun end of this type of photography.

This is not so much of an in depth step by step guide that teaches you how to shoot Still Life and Special Effects images, but rather it is a primer, explaining in brief tutorial the HOW of individual works of photography.

This work is broken up into various sections which focus on various styles of Still and Special effects images. What you get is a large facing page with the image as final product and on the opposite page a detailed drawing and explanation of HOW everything was set up in black and white sketch style. You get to see exactly what lighting was used, how it was placed, what props were involved and the camera's movements.

Sidebar discussions give technical details of each image, the photographers comments, the art director if there was one and various side bar discussions which give a brief but detailed enough version of HOW this kind of work is achieved. Largely this work is superb not as a 'guide to copy', but it is mean't to serve as a tool for inspiring YOU, the photographer, to create your own works having grasped whats possible and what can be achieved.

I own other excellent works by Hicks and Shultz and this book is just fantastic for whetting the appetite and getting some creative juices flowing. I went down to the art store and bought all kinds of materials after reading this book and am looking forward to expanding my photographic horizons into this fascinating area of image making. Used as a tool for inspiration and you can't go wrong.

Texture and Anisotropy : Preferred Orientations in Polycrystals and their Effect on Materials Properties

A Classic!
Written by experts, a must for all texture researchers. This book will be the preeminent text in its field for years to come.

A complete review on the complex anisotroic materials world
A complete and rigorous review on this subject, this book notably solves the compromise of answering scientific inquiries of general knwoledge on anisotropic materials behaviour and the easy and quick browsing for specific materials properties. This is achieved through the addition of many ilustrative figures and examples (specially texture pole figures based on observed and simulated results ) as well as the big amount of references to other studies and publications all over the text. Physicists, engineerings and crystalographers inside the materials science scope will find this book surprisingly complete, amusing and helpful.
