Quo Vadis...The professor makes this journey even more enjoyable through his deliciously witty sarcasms and digs at the capitalistic society of today and its spin-doctors of advertising. Through numerous examples and penetrating questions, the writer clearly supports his point of view that humanity today is rushing headlong into the future, with a blind reliance on science and technology/forms of government/economic theories... and this faith he claims, seems to mirror an almost religious fervor. The writer clearly illustrates how humanity is increasingly trading its unknown future for short term gains of a few in positions of power to exploit those gains.
The book deals with the subject of designing the future with Nature in mind, and speaks of the nature of design. Quite a heavy book in terms of the ideas, though the writing is wonderfully simple and straightforward. But aren't the clearest minds with the most elegant and terse prose, the hardest to comprehend? Simply a brilliant book that is a must read, and replete with a wonderfully diverse reference list at the end.
Another service to life - opening the discussion againHe explains and argues for a continually expanded vision of 'education' again, and embeds this process in the larger processes of life; tirelessy showing that there are no boundaries between the two - and what this means for our place in the living world.
Chapters such as "Architecture as Pedagogy" represent some of his past work refined.
It is in the first half dozen chapters, however, that I feel he gets closest to the heart of the matter. In chapters such as "Slow Knowledge" and "Verbicide" he brings forth such elements as time, information, the speed at which we unite (or disjoint) them, and our relationship between such daily elements. I have been on a constant search for commentary on the implications of our relationship with time as it concerns sustainability. (Some of the best writing on it, that I've found is in The Sabbath by A.J Heschel and Spell of the Sensuous by David Abram). There is little written directly about this in the general literature, much of it not embedded in the concept of sustainability. The majority of it is also somewhat hidden in studies of religion, symbolism, and philosophy. Orr brings these relationships into the open and connects our perception and the design of our use of time directly to the ground. He never loses sight of the how such processes impact our prospects for a livable future.
He also contextualizes this relationship in the ever widening definition (largely thanks to Orr himself) of DESIGN - specifically ecological design.
These aspects are only part of this commentary however; other areas focus on the idea of wilderness, political economy, vocation, technology and human development.
David Orr's ability to connect such topics and contextualize them within the qualities of 'usefulness' is needed fundamentally.
He uncompromisingly subjects dominant current (and lesser-discussed, but possible) beliefs, paradigms, technologies and techniques, to the questions:
"What good is it, are they? How does it/do they influence us? How does it/do they inform our actions? Does this further our best intentions? How does this influence the prospects of life now and in the future?"
Never before has such scrutiny been so necessary, and I have found no more enlightening and pragmatic commentary than that offered by David Orr. This book should raise the bar for others in the many fields of sustainability to broaden, deepen and connect these concepts further, and soon.

How a book changed my life.
Suffer no moreBack pain produced by the muscular-skeletal imbalances that Dr. Michele addresses here are threatening only to quality of life. But as sufferers know too well, what is the value of life if one can barely walk, sit or stand? It is surprising that very few doctors, even today, are familiar with Dr. Michele's revolutionary thinking. Fortunately, those in pain can still benefit from his wisdom--by finding and buying this book. It works. Take if from one who has been there. Alyssa A. Lappen

Technical but written for HomeownerOne tip not mentioned in the book--attach your knicknacks and crystal display vases to shelves/furniture with Quake Wax. It's expensive but doesn't harm furniture, sticks tenaciously, and comes off when you want. Our house came through the 1989 Bay Area quake just fine!
Yanev also talks about the importance of soil and location (his old pictures of devastation in unpopulated areas near Daly City, and new ones of housing tracts now in the same location, are chilling!) Pictures of damaged and undamaged houses in the Bay Area, Gilroy/Los Gatos and Southern California, illustrate the need for and performance of the retrofits. Every do-it-your-selfer in California should buy and use this book.
A must read for anymoe who lives near a fault!

Knowledge is Power1) The author was and is extremely active in the mainstream cancer institutions and not necessarily attacking the industry from an unsubstantiated reactionary position or from some zealousy believed alternative therapeutic background.
2) He sets the context for the vast amount of money and chemotherapy drugs being tested on humans by illuminating the bona fide successes of this approach several decades ago on a limited variety of certain cancers and the subsequent general failure of the industry and research to duplicate those results in the past few decades in the course of treating many of the more common varieties of cancer that are prevalent today.
3) By drawing on the work and conclusions of a few respected biostaticians, Doctor Moss takes the reader through a fairly extensive, though understandable, walk through the park to educate the reader as to how random clinical trials are constructed, the implications and potential misinterpretations of commonly used terms that are presented to the patient and how statistical data bases are often abused and massaged to proliferate the status quo within the vast megabuck industry that has arisen between, but not limited to, the pharmaceutical companies and the Oncological profession to duplicate the 'magic bullet' drugs that were found to be successful in treating leukemia, hodgkin's disease and some rare pathologies many years ago.
The appendix is packed with information in regards to a few dozen of the more commonly used or controversial cytotoxic drugs currently used. However, the issues he brings up concerning the quality of life of the cancer patient who will most probably very miserable and depleted for extended periods of time when using chemotherapy in conjunction with the fact that there are alternative treatment modes out there in the marketplace that no one is compiling any hard data on is argueably this books finest contribution. This is compelling and thought provoking imnformation for anyone in this position to consider well. Knowledge is power and reading this book may help guard the reader against naively developing a false sense of hope based upon the party line responses of the orthodox medical establishment to the concerns of patients who are struggling with the potential prospect of a significantly shortened life.
Every patient diagnosed with cancer has to have this book!
Best book I've ever read on chemotherapyUnlike many alternative health authors who base their conclusions on anecdotal evidence, Moss uses the medical establishment's own research to prove that in almost all instances chemotherapy is NOT a viable approach to improving cancer survival rates.
Moss also makes the important point that current cancer research has never bothered to examine the mental anguish, physical suffering, and poor quality of life endured by almost everyone whose doctors talk or scare them into undergoing chemotherapy.
Learning about the economics behind chemotherapy drives the final nail into the coffin of a "therpy" that educated people in the future will consider outrageous and reflective of the current dark ages of so-called modern medicine.
This is a must read book for anyone who wants to know the truth behind chemotherapy or anyone whose doctor wants to inject toxic chemicals into their bloodstream.
