Vaccination: The Issues of Our Times

an eye opener
I recommend this book to every parent and parent to be as well as health care professionals, especially pediatricians. It is an eye opener about the issue of vaccinations. The presentation of the issue is very well rounded. It provides sections on:

1. the childhood diseases against which the routine vaccinations are given 2. the opinions of the health care professionals on the vaccinations themselves 3. the experiences of parents with vaccinations 4. guidelines on how to gather information about vaccination exemptions and alternative "treatments".

I strongly recommend it. All parents owe to get informed about vaccinations. God the Almighty entrusted our children to us and we need to care for them with knowledge, and pray for the best.

Reasoned voice in the emotional debate
Most of the articles I read on vaccination are very emotional - they are either pro or against it. They make the decision making process of a new parent even harder. This book has a reasoned, less combative tone. It presents opinions as well as information from both side of the debate. I found it educational and helpful.

great book but some of the pages are upside down...
My wife and I have a 14 day old daughter(an absolute angel!!)and we are interested in vaccination issues so we ordered this book. We were really enjoying it until we got toward the back of it and noticed that 20 pages are upside down and that those upside down pages are THE same 20 pages that precede the upside down section!! Hope that wasn't too confusing?! In other words, we not only have upside down pages but we are missing 20 pages!! This is a MAJOR error from either the publisher or the printer. So, we will have to hold off final judgement of this book until amazon ships us a new copy that actually has the missing 20 pages in it!

Eye-opening for all women!
I found this book very eye-opening on many topics, from the monthly hormonal cycle to the effects of the pill to menarche rituals and menopause. Lots of the information here will be new to even well-educated women, and can help them improve their lives and sex lives. After reading and rereading this book, I bought copies for my 3 sisters and my mother.

A book all women should read
This is truly the best book I have ever read. I not only learned so much about my own body but also that of my mom, and what she is physically and emotionally going through. I learned that other women can relate to some of my experiences and I no longer feel alone. I have learned to honor and respect my body and the monthly changes that I go through, and to appreciate those changes. I am going to teach my daughter that having her period is not something to dread, but something to celebrate. I plan to buy this book for my 18 year old niece and my mom.

A recommended contribution to personal and women's studies
In Women's Sexual Passages: Finding Pleasure And Intimacy At Every Stage Of Life, midwife and women's health care provider Elizabeth Davis draws upon her many years of experience and expertise to provide a frank and intimate overview of female sexuality and its evolution over a lifetime. She shows how women's sexuality is connected to (and affected by) childbirth, child rearing, stress, grief, and creativity. Her commentary on such issues as sex during menstruation, after childbirth, after menopause, after rape, after infidelity, and the sexuality of celibacy are both candid and informative. By tracing women's sexual cycles through the course of a lunar month and a developmental lifetime, Women's Sexual Passages is a welcome and recommended contribution to personal and women's studies that is enriched for readers with poetry, invocations of ancient goddesses, traces of ritual and herbal wisdom, along with fully up-to-date presentations on endometriosis and PMS.

Yeah!

Confirmation
This review is entitled "Confirmation" because it serves to confirm or ratify what, intuitively, I have felt for as long as I can recall. Having been raised in a strongly religious family, I have been exposed to various versions of the Holy Bible, all of which tended to depict and illustrate all personalities with white faces. Given that all of the accounts in the Bible took place on the continent of Africa, prior to the arrival of any significant numbers of Europeans, it was very difficult for me to accept that none of the major figures in the Bible was Black, yet that is what is portrayed. Although I felt that something was "wrong with this picture", I had no way to refute it, and in fact, was reluctant to voice it among some of my own friends and elders who would have deemed such thoughts as sacrilegious, or worse. It still bothered me, nonetheless. As my educational experiences progressed, I had increasing difficulty reconciling what was thrust upon me by the media, those omnipresent Bible illustrations, TV Evangelists, and others who perpetuated the same notion that all of the personalities in the Bible were white. I began to research on my own, and with the advent of the Internet, other avenues were opened to me. I have read a number of other treatises and writings by other distinguished Black religious scholars on the issue of the Black presence in the Bible, all of which enlightened me, and at the same time gave me a deep sense of "connection" with those Biblical personalities, as well as a sense of pride. On the other hand, it also aroused in me a sense of anger and frustration, as it confirmed to me that religious history, just as history in general, has been manipulated, twisted, distorted, and violated for the very sinister and express purpose of discrediting a People and robbing them of a very rich heritage and perpetuating a myth of so-called "superiority". This book should be mandatory reading, not just for Blacks, but for whites, as well, who have themselves been, in the words of Carter G. Woodson, "miseducated". I applaud Dr. Johnson and his colleagues, who are making an invaluable contribution to the telling of OUR history, as too often the euphamism that history is simply "his story" as it pertains to Blacks, is validated over and over. My record will reflect that I have ordered multiple copies of this book in the past, and am at this writing ordering several more copies. They make great gifts, and I can't imagine a better gift than the gift of truth.

the truth shall set us free
very informative , and very real .with bibical scriptures to backup these claims.but most of all it is true ,and common sense.why would africa be inhabited by caucasion ,and how could cleopatra be exotic and caucasion.especially the very hot and dry climate.caucasion skin is much to thin made for colder climates.it is an exellent research on the history of african race in the bible and lets people see that they were around then and will continue to be

Compelling Reading
When I bought this book I didn't know what to expect - I thought it would be similar in style to Oliver Sacks' "Awakenings" (i.e. a series of case histories). While I enjoyed Awakenings I would have to say that this book is much better - it truly reads like an un-put-downable thriller. The plot has all the ingredients for a great story - whatever we might think of heroin addiction and the criminal backgrounds of many of the frozen addicts, we can only feel sympathy for their terrible fate; Langston is a perspicacious but poorly funded neurologist who must fight the prejudices of the medical establishment (and ultimately the government and President) in order to develop an exciting but controversial new treatment that will give the addicts the only hope of release from their living hell. It's great stuff, made all the better of course because its based on truth. The book is also hugely informative and gives a sobering insight into the suffering endured by victims of Parkinsons and other neurodegenerative diseases; as well as offering hope in the form of future treatments. It is also superbly written. What more can I say?

A must read if somebody in the family has this illness
We are passing the book around the family now. The farther has PD. It has been great for us to gain an understanding of this mysterious illness.

Fascinating presentation of the beginning of PD research
A must for all Parkinson's Disease interested persons. A spellbinding tale depicting the beginning of modern science research into the causes of PD brought about by a very unlikely source. Hard to set aside once started. E. Jack Savely

Tons of insightful information
If you compare books on interpersonal development, most of them reiterate the same basic points with little new innovation. It's like every author tries to re-write "How to Win Friend's and Influence People" with their own personal spin and a few new insights, and then try to pass it off as an informative piece of work. This book is not like that.

"The Charisma Effect" is filled with new content that I haven't seen in other books, so much so that I am now re-reading it, this time taking notes. It seems as if the author took the time to do alot of his own research rather than simply reiterate what others have said or simply rely on anecdotal experience.

The book dispenses alot of information, so I would recommend a person read "How to Win Friends" first as a primer, and then follow up with this book.

A must have !
I had been looking for a book like this for a long time, I finally fount it, it tells you that you can have that so much desired Charisma, you don't have to be born with it, this is so important if you are a Sales person, there are lots of techniques that will help you sell what you want or to persuade people. It combines a little of neurolinguistic (anchors) and that theory that there are 3 kinds of people: visual, auditive and kinesthatic... so interesting. The book is worth every dollar you spend.

This Book Fills An Important Knowledge Gap
The thing that really amazes me about this book after having read it is that it successfully challenges the myth that a person 'has' charisma - bad luck for those who don't! The central argument that people 'do' charisma was what first attracted me to it.

It's refreshing to know that if a person has the "content", the life experience, a moderate amount of intelligence, and can discover the uniqueness of their personality (through the exercises in the book), then charismatic performance is a real possibility.

I have done a number of the exercises in the book to very good effect. I found the exercises particularly helpful in three ways: 1) giving me some structures to successfully build my content around, 2)finding the right frames to wrap my message around, and 3) an unbelievable array of language techniques to use when creating the main messages. I have used the ideas to make board presentations and manage change within my organisation. I am literally astounded at how these techniques have smoothed what could have been very difficult persuasion situations.

Perhaps the most important part of the book for me is the sections on finding a mission and life passion. I completed these exercises and I have to say they have made a very substantial impact on me.

I thoroughly recommend this book. It's the first one I have found that really drills down into the actions one takes to make a difference. Most of the other titles I've read are too general and haven't gone into specifics. This one actually shows you what to do!

Understanding Craving and Addiction
This is a great little book for both the lay public and professionals. I highly recommend it. It provides a good, solid scientific understanding of addiction in simple language and offers the reader useful guidelines about moving beyond sobriety and toward cure. --Fred P. Gallo, Ph.D., Author of "Energy Psychology" and "Energy Tapping."

i was addicted to the information
This book is very informative. It is a great tool for those who need to understand themselves.

Must read book for addiction professionals
This is an excellent and cutting edge explanation of addiction that ties together not only chemical dependencies but process dependencies. Also a very hopeful book in that answers are presented and current approaches validated and explained as to why they are working for those who apply them. Give it a read!

A must read on drug effectiveness and commercialization
This is an excellent account of the effects of allowing marketing of Tamnbocor (flecainide) as an anti-arrhythmic based on "surrogate" intermediate endpoints. Later there was recognition that in fact the drug was associated with increased cardiac death rates when a "gold standard" randomized controlled trial was undertaken. It also shows the problematic relationships between the payment and support of academic researchers into drug effectiveness and the drug firms, many of whose products have been life saving and life transforming. A very well balanced book and very enjoyable reading. The author erroneously describes RA Fisher as an American Genius which would irritate the very English (& later Australian) Cambridge professor of Genetics!

Unbelievable but TRUE story how prescription drugs kill!
This important investigative work explains HOW and WHY the American Pharmaceutical Industry KILLS and no one seems seriously interested in stopping it, least of all the FDA! Legally prescribed drugs are now the 4th LEADING cause of death in the US. We are trying to change this by helping to train physicians and the public to use natural approaches instead of drugs, inspite of the continous FDA and FTC harrassment of all doctors in Alternative Medicine. Our system that financially rewards doctors millions of dollars for KILLING people is seriously out of control. If natural therapies are even alleged to have slightly harmed even 1 patient, the FDA stands ready to seize ALL of the supplies and put everyone involved in jail. Yet drugs are provably killing over 100,000 each year and the GAME goes on. I believe this book could help everyone understand that this must all change and soon. This book merely describes the tip of the iceberg and the 70,000 dead from these heart medicines described in detail here, is just a fraction of the real number needlessly killed by American medicine and surgery everyday at great taxpayor expense. WE have safe and EFFECTIVE alternatives to virtually every drug, including aspirin (not tylenol!) and most heart surgery is done on the WRONG plaque and does not significantly reduce the likelihood of a heart attack. There are SAFE natural alternatives not just for heart disease but for virtually every one of the major diseases today! contact G.F. Gordon M.D.D.O. Important piece of the jigsaw showing unscientific medicine
Ralph Moss wrote an excellent review of this book in the Spring 1997 edition of the Cancer Chronicles. I am writing only to put his review into context. There have been many books written describing the shortcomings of medicine, particularly those questioning claims of the efficacy of medical intervention. These include Robert Mendelsohn's Confessions of A Medical Heretic; Richard Taylor's Medicine out of Control; Ivan Illich's Medical Nemesis; the New Medical Foundation's Dissent in Medicine; Samuel Epstein's The Politics of Cancer; Ralph Moss' Cancer Industry and Questioning Chemotherapy; Ulrich Abel's Chemotherapy of advanced epithelial cancer - a critical survey; What Doctors Don't Tell You's Cancer Handbook, What's Really Working; and Neville Hodgkinson's AIDS, the failure of scientific medicine. (I have also published two papers questioning the efficacy of surgical treatment of cancer in Medical Hypotheses.) These together support and explain the claim in the editorial in the British Medical Journal of October 1991 (Vol 303: 198-99) "Where is the wisdom...? The poverty of medical evidence" that "Only about 15% of medical interventions are supported by solid evidence... This is partly because only 1% of the articles in medical journals are scientifically sound". Thomas Moore's earlier (1989) book Heart Failure describes the poor record of treating heart problems with bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty and drugs to lower serum cholesterol. Moore's more recent book homes in on particular drugs such as those used to treat arrhythmia. With deaths from heart disease accounting for more than 40% of all deaths these two books on the inefficacy of treatments for heart problems fill an important gap. As a scientist I found the section explaining how "surrogate endpoints" are used instead of actual therapeutic benefits to test efficacy particularly useful. It explains why so many claims for the efficacy of chemotherapy are invalid. It is a pity that the book is now out of print.

Concise technical information!
I really struggled through the first chapter, but after that is stared to make more sense. This book is very technical, and many topics like 10-bit logarithmic color are definitely complex concepts, but generally the author does an excellent job of explaining them as simply as possible.

Explanations for what is happening 'under the hood' of a lot of compositing tools are explained, as well as how to achieve them manually. Stuff like keying, despill, unsharp mask, and defocus operations. I've read the 2 other main compositing textbooks available on Amazon.com, I would say this is definitely better than "Digital Compositing In Depth", and slightly better than "The Art & Science of Digital Compositing". It's definitely the most detailed and technical of the 3 books.

I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner, it'd be more suited to someone who has composited for a few years and wants to better understand the underlying concepts of their compositing software.

Fabulous resource.
The author has done a great job of taking most if not all the tricks and tips and combined them into one excellent book.
Film and Video is completely explained and the reader gets a great idea why they are so completely different.
This book is an A+ must have for anyone wanting to know more about the compositing process.

One of the best compositing books out there...
If you consider yourself an upper intermediate level user or less, I'd recommend this book. Among many other things that it does quite well, it explains what procedural keyers like Primatte are doing and shows you how to accomplish the same kinds of processes manually. You will know what each of the many keyers in After Effects (and other compositing apps) are doing and the logic behind each. You will also learn where best to use each based on the situation at hand. It also takes you through many other areas like matte extraction, despill procedures and color correction. After reading it, you will understand scientifically what is going on under the hood of your favorite imaging and video apps. To me, this is the "Photoshop Channel Chops" of 2001. What David Biedny's legendary PCC book did for Photoshop artists a decade or so ago, this book will do for compositors today. I have seen other books handle this subject, some do it well but none as good as this one. Well-written and very easy to understand -- though there are definitely places where you will have to reread passages to understand what's being said. But if you commit to reading it with more than a cursory perusal, you'll walk away a master. Highly recommended. Five Cows.

The Fortune of owing "Titanic: Fortune & Fate"
There isn't much to say about the amazing book exept that throught the words and photos of the passangers' letters, diaries, quotes, tickets, staterooms, clothing, ect.; you get an exellent feeling of who was on the Titanic, not just a group as a whole, but you begin to know them as individuals.
Believe me, this "Fortune" is one exellent investment!!![...]

Titanic Fortune and Fate
This book must adorn your bookshelf if you are a serious Titanic fan. The book contains everything from a complete passenger list, tantilizing facts and amazing pictures of artifacts that will make any "Titanic-maniac" feel like they're owning the real thing!

As you read the book, you can't help but feel as though you've been transported back to 1912 and feel a part of history...

This book is definately a keeper, Good Work!

Excellent
If you're a Titanic buff, then this book is a must-have. The pictures of the artifacts and people, and the factoids that go with them make the stories come alive. What really got to me was the entire passenger list stating the names, ages, class, and if they survived.
