Bilingual education, history, politicis, theory and practiceExcellent book that covers all topics needed in a Foundations course for teachers that are working to obtain a Bilingual/ESL endorsement. The book covers the legal requirements for Bilingual education, gives pertinent court cases that have impacted the education of LEP studnets and gives an comprehensive history of bilingual education in the United States. The section of the effectiveness of bilingual education was thought provoking and created much class discussion, as did the section giving case studies. The teachers were able to relate thier own classroom experiences and compare those with the case studies. The book has a chapter on Indian education that was very useful to our district on a reservation. The section on theroy to practice was determined to by the teachers to be very productive.

Forget Putnam, Read Orr!Just when I got depressed about the direction of the social capital debate, this bookcame out. Orr, gets it right. Social capital explains a lot about how local politics unfold, but there are also other things going on, and social capital can applied in an intagroup or intergroup context. The social capital book to read this year. Forget Putnam, Read Orr!

This book redefines mentoring as a way of life.Breaking the Circle of One expands the traditional meaning of mentorship in education. From its beginning as a writing circle of graduate students and professors emerged a group that was redefined by the mentoring and support the members provided to one another. This book is a rich and diverse compilation of experiences that evolved as a continuing strand of mentorship by those students who participated the Circle. The stories in this book illustrate that mentoring can truly be established as a way of life, especially for those of us who are in the education profession.

Clinical Teaching Strategies in NursingClinical Teaching Strategies in Nursing by Kathleen B. Gaberson and Marilyn H. Oermann
This book was developed to examine concepts of clinical teaching but is helpful for teaching in general. The first three chapters are about a philosophy and outcomes of clinical teaching and preparing for clinical learning activities. The next three chapters are about models and processes of clinical teaching and the ethical and legal issues in clinical teaching. The last nine chapters are about teaching strategies including learning assignments, self-directed learning activities, learning laboratories, simulations, games, case method, case study, grand rounds, conferences, discussions, written assignments, use of preceptors, and clinical teaching in diverse settings. Discussions of multimedia, computer-assisted instruction, critical thinking, journals, concept maps, portfolios, contracts, global and population based settings. The authors believe that there are essential and enriched curricula. This is a scholarly and practical book that is well written and well organized. Chapters have section headings, tables, bulleted content, summaries, and list of references. My students have indicated that this book was especially helpful to them.

Coming of Age in Academe: Rekindling Women's Hopes and Reforming the Academy
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (03 November, 1999)
Amazon base price: $95.00
Used price: $11.89
Used price: $11.89
In her foreword to Coming of Age in Academe, Gloria Steinem shares Jane Roland Martin's laments about the current state of the academy, among them the exclusionary theoretical jargon that has taken over academic speech and writing. "Perhaps there should be signs on every road leading to Yale, Harvard, and so on," she suggests, "Beware: Deconstruction Ahead." In her clear, accessible argument about what has happened to women in academe, Martin never stoops to jargon herself. In fact, her devotion to plain speaking may at times remind the reader of George Bernard Shaw's devotion to simplified spelling. But in her 30 years as a college professor and philosopher of education, the author has achieved a clarity of vision that is well served by her unadorned prose. She asserts that "the academy charges an exorbitant admission fee to those women who wish to belong." Even worse, she contends, "in turning male and female members alike away from the lived experience of real people in the real world, and especially from society's desperately urgent problems, the academy creates a brain drain within the culture at large." An intelligent summary of familiar problems that also features some unfamiliar proposals for solutions, Coming of Age in Academe should be required reading for college administrators and feminist scholars from the post-Kristevan to the neo-Bovarian. --Regina Marler

Crossing BridgesThis is truly a wonderful book! It's the one so many of us have been seeking. Its appeal has a broad stroke: to in-the-home workers, off-to-the-office workers, to students, and to those in Academe. Don't misunderstand me: this is no feel-good book; it tells it like it is and somehow that's reassuring. It's reassuring because someone out there is representing us. Someone has the scholarship, the background, the style, and yes, the humanity to say it for us. It makes me proud to be an "equal gender."
". . . good philosophy was not supposed to shed light on everyday problems" says Prof. Martin. For those of us who can't live through the day without "good philosophy" reading her book provides the path to sanity. Educators are a lonely lot up there, out there, on the line of fire; just you and a whole class of whatever age, background, and ability. Take my hand, says this book. Let's go there together. I'm happy to continue the bridge-crossing begun, for me, with Prof. Martin in her seminal book,"The Schoolhome." I look forward, and across, to the other truly "essential" shore, when the next bridge beckons us to cross.
