First-Rate Work !
I feel sad because "Kinderculture" is the type of book that should be a bestseller or it should be a reference guide for experts who write books that aim for the layperson.

No future for corporation kids
This is a collection of essays on the theme that childhood is a creation of society and today it is the corporations who are constructing childhood.Topics examined include Disney movies,"educational" television,Beavis and Butthead, video games, television wrestling, Barbie, and Macdonald's.Children are shamelessly being exploited for profit with no consideration for their welfare.Graphic violence and sexism is promoted in many video games. The writers want to expose the hypocrisy and exploitation of the corporations who have taken over the minds of children.Macdonald's promotes a family friendly image, yet employees have to put the company well ahead of family interests.Never have a generation of children been subject to such intense exploitation, as this book shows. The writers hope that more parents and teachers question what is being done to the kids.

Knowing and Reasoning in College : Gender-Related Patterns in Students' Intellectual Development

developmental theory made clear
Baxter Magolda uses exerpts from her own longitudinal research to clearly introduce four "ways of knowing" that students generally progress through during the college years. The quotes (with further interpretation by the author) allow the reader to follow a handful of students and hear them relate, in their own words, the ways in which they make sense of the world. Baxter Magolda further examines gender-related ways of knowing within each cognitive stage.

The book is well-organized and easy to follow. Much of the text is quotes from student interviews, so, in a sense, the reader is learning about cognitive theory from the students themselves. Easily accessible language and clear organization and interpretation make the book easy to follow. Wide margins leave room for your own notes!

An important topic... a lens through which to better understand students' development and ultimately design better practice with students

Wow
This book is just great. It really is a revolutionary book in the field of student affairs. We so rarely think about where college students are in their development because we think they're adults. Baxter Magolda sheds light on how to work with people in this age group.

A good review of processes in reading
This book is a useful overview of the processes involved in learning to read. It cover comprehension, learning to read, and phonological awareness. This book discusses the different types of reading instruction which is usually shrouded in controversy but this discusses different processes that different teaching methods create, rather than a debate over which reading instruction is better.

Learning to Read: Beyond Phonics and Whole Language
This book breaks down the reading process into the foundational pieces necessary for success. It was a valuable tool in helping the parents, that I work with, understand why I do the things that I do, in my classroom.

A well rounded literature textbook
We used this book in my literature class, and I should say that I am not a fan of literature classes, but this book was very surprising. It contains short stories, poems, and plays like any other text, but if offers a wide variety of topics for selection by the professor or the student based on personal preferences or educational objectives. For instance, when working with poetry, students may choose from a variety of poems from baseball to romance. It is all there! Another example would be the short stories in the text; they range from stories of military experience to Asian family traditions. It is not only a literature book, but also a book of culture and variety. It is so well rounded it should appeal to all types of personalities, likes, and dislikes.

Excellent Intorduction to Literature
I used this book for a college literature class. It is a great book covering short stories, plays, poems and more. This is one book I will not be selling back!

Another question about the book: 1B- In spite of the many similarities between first and second language learning, the important differences must be considered in curriculum development. What implications might they have, particulary for planning the content of language programs?

making it happen interaction in the second language classroo
Hello I have some questions about this book, please help.. 1-The nature versus nurture controversy is still with us today in the area of language acquisition. Can you think of some evidence showing the importance of nature or what we are born with? How about our experience with the environment? which do you think is most important nature or nurture? and why?

Math and Art - What A Great Combo!
I love this book and have shared it with colleagues! What a great idea to combine math and art, and what a great way to tackle problem solving which is not always a favourite with kids! For teachers, it helps us cover two subject areas at the same time which we greatly appreciate. When I saw the cover of this book, I was instantly intrigued. I liked the fact that it's suitable for all age groups -- older students may appreciate the art history aspect more, but the rhymes appeal to all ages. The illustrations jump out, are appealing and make math more interesting. When I showed this book to some of my students, one instantly said that it was "neat" because everyone came up with a different way of getting the answer yet everyone was right, to which I responded with a delighted smile!

Wonderful math/art connection
Bravo, Greg Tang has done it once again! This wonderful book is full of authentic masterpieces which Tang recreates to get us looking at the art in a "math kind of way!" This book is super for all elementary levels, kindergarten through grade five. The focus is on addition, and the many ways we can group numbers to get to a given sum. We love it!

Very good!
This book is a very good and comprehensive introduction to the psychology of learning motivation. The author does not only present different theories and research findings, she also extracts practical recommendations. Real life examples illustrate basic principles and procedures.
Altough this book is meant for graduate students and teacher, it can also be read by other people.
The recommendations are solidly based and can help teachers, coaches, trainers, and even parents to boost students' motivation to learn

A Very Useful Book
I used this book as a graduate student and continue to use it today. I especially like the examples and literature review.

A student's perspective
I am a second year nursing student, and this has been my most favorite book this semester. Dr. Watson's definition of human care and caring is very clear and concise. The book is a true work of philosophical art. I enjoyed it very much, and will read it over and over. Thank you Dr. Watson!!

Inside nursing
This book help us to understand the true meaning of nursing in our days. With this concept of nursing, nurses really understand that they make all the difference. Jean Watson view of nursing is one of caring and supporting people in their context, respecting them as complete human beens.

Very Interesting!
This is a very well-written book for teachers. The author seems to know something about every subject that might be related to composition--the bibliography alone should be required reading for all prospective teachers; it's nearly 30 pages. I recommend this book very highly.

A "must read" for teachers
This is the most comprehensive book I've ever seen on composition and teaching. I mean, it has everything--psychology and writing, linguistics and writing, reading and writing. Also, the book goes way beyond theory and research to explain in clear language how an ordinary teacher like me can actually apply theory and research in the classroom. This is a really fine book, and I recommend it to everyone.

Psychology of Learning for Instruction

Amazon base price: $59.95

Better than you think.
Just finishing my masters in secondary education, this is the book I find myself using as a reference most often. Just about everything is here in regards to the psychology of education from the elementry stuff like Behaviorism through a hoard of theorists like Piaget, Asubel, Brunner, etc. etc. etc. The contrast presented at the end of the book between Gagne and the constructivists makes the book feel particularly relevant.

Who knows, maybe it is just that so many of the other books for teachers seem lackluster (am I the only one who didn't find Wong particularly useful???), but Driscoll's book is one of the best reference books for teachers I've come across so far.

And yeah, I don't think it was meant as a 'reference' book per se, but this will definitely point you in the right direction and while it is certainly readible, I found it stood out most for me as a stepping stone to the literature.

Intelligent and Practical
Marcy's book was the text for a course I attended, and it was packed with useful information. Her writing style is clear and organized into meaningful content areas. I found her examples to be practical and they easily conveyed the essence of the context. In general, the book exemplified the principles discussed in the materials by being student-centered.
