This book is a heady look at how remotely operated machines are affecting our beliefs and understanding of our interactions with each other and with the environment; while it's unlikely that every piece will interest every reader, anyone concerned with the future of art, technology, or society will find plenty to think about. Judith Donath, of MIT's Media Lab, asks how we define identity over the Internet and other electronic means of distant communication. Media art critic Machiko Kusahara reviews the current work of five telerobotic artists and their questioning of attitudes toward fundamental concepts like presence and absence. Philosopher Hubert L. Dreyfus cuts to the chase and examines knowledge itself in "Telepistemology: Descartes's Last Stand." Knowing that we know something is hard enough without miles of cables between our minds and the objects of our knowledge, but is technologically mediated information really different in kind?
Eighteen essays in all contribute to the discussion of remote action. As we expand our bodies to include webcam eyes and robot arms, such questions become more and more important to thinking people, and we can start looking for answers with The Robot in the Garden. --Rob Lightner

Agency and Knowledge on the Internet & Telepistemology"The Robot in the Garden: Telerobotics and Telepistemology on the Net" documents the projects and provokes thought with critical essays on its philosophical and cultural implications.
The book is highly recommended to philosophers, media artists and robotics engineers.

NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY COVER...More specifically, the author addresses such issues as gender bias, poverty, racism, and the needs of First Nations students in our schools.
The sections that I found to be especially interesting included first-person accounts of the residential school experience, and the diary of an elementary school teacher.
As a fellow sociologist, and an educator who has taught everything from kindergarten to upper-year sociology classes, I highly recommend Dr. Wotherspoon's book to anyone who has a desire to gain some interesting insights into the Canadian educational system. I personally intend to utilize this book as a text in some of my future university classes.
Thanks Dr. Wotherspoon. Your dedication to conceiving this body of research is greatly appreciated...especially at a time when our educational system faces serious challenges that are often considered to be of crisis proportions.

Brings mathematical precision to penmanshipMy son began the program at the age of seven, and he will be completing it this month. By the time he reached the third book of the program, he could write, but was unable to reproduce the samples in the books with the same precision. But do not despair. Over the next two books, his precision and speed have increased to the point that he can write more beautiful script than most adults.
My wife was so impressed with our son's progress that we decided to buy another set of practice books for her, so that she could improve her cursive script as well.

An excellent and very interesting collection of opinions.
It moves from simple rhythmic principles to more complex with lots of practice exercises. It introduces each rhythmic figure as a cell and focuses on the rhythmic patterns with simple word patterns that help in the initial learning. The book also has exercises that contain many rests. So many other books of this type consist of endless patterns of rhythmic figures without rests. Having to count through rests increases the difficulty and gives much better overall musical practice. Most of the exercises are written on single lines and really focus on the rhythm rather than trying to read notes on the usual 5 line staff. Later in the book there are more musical examples to help put the rhythms in musical context. There are review questions after each chapter and listings of pieces of music that illustrate the various rhythms just studied.
All in all it is a very good book for anyone wanting to improve their rhythmic skills.
