A truly helpful book
For any of you looking for a good book on rhythm reading the book by Daniel Kazez titled "Rhythm Reading - Elementary Through Advanced Training" is quite good. Daniel Kazez is a cellist and teaches at Wittenberg, University in Springfield, Ohio.

It moves from simple rhythmic principles to more complex with lots of practice exercises. It introduces each rhythmic figure as a cell and focuses on the rhythmic patterns with simple word patterns that help in the initial learning. The book also has exercises that contain many rests. So many other books of this type consist of endless patterns of rhythmic figures without rests. Having to count through rests increases the difficulty and gives much better overall musical practice. Most of the exercises are written on single lines and really focus on the rhythm rather than trying to read notes on the usual 5 line staff. Later in the book there are more musical examples to help put the rhythms in musical context. There are review questions after each chapter and listings of pieces of music that illustrate the various rhythms just studied.

All in all it is a very good book for anyone wanting to improve their rhythmic skills.

It may be trite to say that new technology changes the way we see ourselves and the world, but it's crucial that we explore those changes fully. In The Robot in the Garden, computer scientist Ken Goldberg curates a collection of essays on telerobotics by critics, philosophers, and engineers, addressing questions as fundamental as, "How does mediation affect the knowledge we acquire?"

This book is a heady look at how remotely operated machines are affecting our beliefs and understanding of our interactions with each other and with the environment; while it's unlikely that every piece will interest every reader, anyone concerned with the future of art, technology, or society will find plenty to think about. Judith Donath, of MIT's Media Lab, asks how we define identity over the Internet and other electronic means of distant communication. Media art critic Machiko Kusahara reviews the current work of five telerobotic artists and their questioning of attitudes toward fundamental concepts like presence and absence. Philosopher Hubert L. Dreyfus cuts to the chase and examines knowledge itself in "Telepistemology: Descartes's Last Stand." Knowing that we know something is hard enough without miles of cables between our minds and the objects of our knowledge, but is technologically mediated information really different in kind?

Eighteen essays in all contribute to the discussion of remote action. As we expand our bodies to include webcam eyes and robot arms, such questions become more and more important to thinking people, and we can start looking for answers with The Robot in the Garden. --Rob Lightner

Agency and Knowledge on the Internet & Telepistemology
The anthology of Prof. Ken Goldberg discusses the questions such as What is the essential relationship between distance and knowledge? How to technologies affect this relationship? How does technology alter our perceptions of distance and scale and our understanding of truth? What are the limits to the new technologies and how do they depend on existing human perceptual, cognitive and active capacities? How much can a human being change, even when equipped with an armory of telerobotic apparatus and how much can the concept of being human change?

"The Robot in the Garden: Telerobotics and Telepistemology on the Net" documents the projects and provokes thought with critical essays on its philosophical and cultural implications.

The book is highly recommended to philosophers, media artists and robotics engineers.

The Roots of Education (Foundations of Waldorf Education, 19)

Educators today should be listening to Rudolph Steiner
Rudolph Steiner presents evidence based on history that is duplicated by evidence in recent brain studies. Children's brains develop over three distinct time periods in their life in three different ways. Education would improve vastly if teaching methods were designed to help children learn in ways that are consistent with the way children learn. Joseph Chilton Pearce states similar views based on biological studies. All educators and education policy makers should read this book.

A Serious Proposal to the Ladies (Pickering Women's Classics)
Published in Hardcover by Pickering & Chatto Ltd (March, 2002)
Authors: Mary Astell and Patricia Springborg
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

A Serious Proposal, parts 1 and 2
Mary Astell is one of the first European females to write directly on issues of philosophy, politics, and rhetoric; like other women writers she also writes about religion and morality, as she proposes the foundation of an educational/religious institution for single ladies. This book has complete editions of both books 1 and 2 of Astell's A Serious Proposal to the Ladies (1694, 1697), with facsimiles of the original title pages, extensive footnotes, an excellent introduction, bibliography, and an index at the back. The introduction is an excellent overview of Astell's political and philosophical context. Of particular interest is Springborg's coverage of Astell's debates with John Locke, and Astell's use of Descartes and the Port-Royal Logic. Springborg also draws connections between Astell and Daniel Defoe, Richard Steele, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Samuel Richardson, and others. This book is a must for anyone interested in women's contributions to philosophy, education, religion, or politics in the English enlightenment.

NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY COVER...
The Sociology of Education In Canada is more than just another book with a pretty cover. In this book, the author, Dr. Terry Wotherspoon, successfully provides an in-depth critical sociological analysis of the contemporary issues and challenges that concern the educational system in Canada.

More specifically, the author addresses such issues as gender bias, poverty, racism, and the needs of First Nations students in our schools.

The sections that I found to be especially interesting included first-person accounts of the residential school experience, and the diary of an elementary school teacher.

As a fellow sociologist, and an educator who has taught everything from kindergarten to upper-year sociology classes, I highly recommend Dr. Wotherspoon's book to anyone who has a desire to gain some interesting insights into the Canadian educational system. I personally intend to utilize this book as a text in some of my future university classes.

Thanks Dr. Wotherspoon. Your dedication to conceiving this body of research is greatly appreciated...especially at a time when our educational system faces serious challenges that are often considered to be of crisis proportions.

Brings mathematical precision to penmanship
I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and scientific approach of this classic textbook. The Spencerian authors apparently spared no detail in putting together this very useful course.

My son began the program at the age of seven, and he will be completing it this month. By the time he reached the third book of the program, he could write, but was unable to reproduce the samples in the books with the same precision. But do not despair. Over the next two books, his precision and speed have increased to the point that he can write more beautiful script than most adults.

My wife was so impressed with our son's progress that we decided to buy another set of practice books for her, so that she could improve her cursive script as well.

Authors: Karl Nickel, Michael Wohlfahrt, and Eric M., Capt Brown
Amazon base price: $79.95

Well written and an excellent source of information
I found this book an excellent introduction to the art of tailless aircraft design. It is a well laid out book which allows you either to read it through, or to browse topics of particular interest to the reader. The enthusiasm of the authors is obvious from the tone of the book and isn't lost in the translation from German. Most of the explanations and solutions are given in a conceptual form often by analogy before the maths is presented in any detail. This makes it a very easy book to use and understand.

The Tao of Life Stories: Chinese Language, Poetry, and Culture in Education

Riveting stories of Chinese women immigrants
Dr. Li, whose first language is not English, has an exceptional ability to use English words to convey vivid imagery as she describes her own journey and the journeys of 4 other Chinese women immigrants as they transition from one very different lifestyle, language and culture, to another. She is equally adept with her beautiful poetry and use of various Chinese knots as she describes and demonstrates how teacher and student can reverse roles. How one learns and adapts throughout life provides an underlying meaning and structure to her work. This book can be an educational resource for multicultural studies, but is also a fascinating and inspirational read for anyone with an interest in life stories of those who struggle against heavy odds to bring about dramatic change in their own lives.

An excellent and very interesting collection of opinions.
I found this to be an excellent book, especially for college students interested in Leadership. The authors take a thoughtful and critical look at the field from a variety of different perspectives. The field of Leadership studies needs more academic rigor and more books like this one.
