Great for all parents!
This book is great for all parents...even if they choose not to homeschool. It gives great advice and ideas for cutting corners in "regular" life to allow room in the budget for homeschooling. I am new in my research of homeschooling but I have read at least 10 books in the last 6 months on the topic and this is tie for first place on my list! A MUST for anyone concerned about "finding" the money to homeschool!

A must read
I loved this book so informative. This book is for anyone feeling they dont feel they would be able to homeschool. It gives alot advice and how to live on one income, starting your own library, and information on college. It also gives alot of freebies or low cost alternatives. This book may be the one to convince my husband that homeschooling is the right choice.

The most practical book on home schooling that I have read!
This book is essential for all home schoolers that desire to or must watch the budget. Tons of practical tips on freebies and low cost activities and teaching aids, as well as other tips to make home schooling doable for anyone who wishes to educate their children at home.

Homework Rules and Homework Tools Your Guide to a Simple Homework System
Published in Paperback by Acalogic, Inc. (01 February, 2000)
Author: Michael S. Wendt
Amazon base price: $9.95

homework answers for teachers
I am very familiar with Homework Rules and Homework Tools. The book makes sense. It
can be the foundation for building homework policies in school and at home.
The unique thing about the Rules and Tools book is the author provides
ongoing support. Your staff is not left out in the cold after they read the
book. They can actually get their questions answered by Dr. Wendt on an as
needed basis. This book is a "must have" for teachers administrators and
parents. Our Middle School PTA representatives have taken a real interest in
the Rules and Tools approach.

Outstanding
I have a son who is intelligent, but who lacks the motivation to reach his potential. I've tried a number of things to get this kid to complete his assignments and begged him to pay attention in class. His teacher knew his potential but was unable to draw it out of him as well. I bought the book, studied it closely, implemented many of the ideas and my son's performance in school has been absolutely refreshing. The techniques for getting him to do his homework worked plus - now that he's spent some time on the schoolwork, he's actually found that some of it's actually interesting. Many thanks to the author for his work in this field. Our family thanks you.

Homework Rules and Tools is a Winner!
As principal of a school for students with disabilities- learning and emotional, I am always looking for new information- research-based, that I can pass along to the teachers and parents of my students. The number one problem faced by these folks is the dilemna of getting these students to do their homework! The bottom line that if a child does his homework, he will pass. If he does not, he will most likely fail. There have been some books written about how to get children to complete this task, and I have read all of them. However, they all lack one key component: they see the lack of homework completion as an academic task...Mr. Wendt, in his book, sees it as as a disciplinary problem, which may be due in part to the lack of control the parent has over the child. Mr. Wendt, whom I have had the pleasure of listening to on one of his speaking engagements, helps the parent gain control of not just the homework problem, but of the home as well. His book could be called a "throw back" to the days when the children listened to and respected authority. Instead of taking away things from the child, when they do not complete their tasks, give them things...like more work to do. Keep them busy! When one thinks about this simple strategy, it may sound backwards, but how many times have you, as a parent, taken away something from your child, only to have them shrug and say, "I don't care"? The practical, common sense and easy to follow approaches outlined in this book are a marvel! As an educator, I wonder why I didn't of these strategies myself. I bought 10 books after I heard Mr. Wendt speak, and gave them to parents who I felt needed the support. Seven of those 10 have called to personally thank me for this fountain of wisdom, and have noted a dramatic imporvement in their homes- both academically and behaviorally. What I like the most about this book is that it puts the burden on the CHILD to do the work, not the parent. This is something that will help the child well after he graduates from school. These are called life skills, and as one who works with children on a daily basis, there are not many parents or children who could not benefit from the great ideas in this book!

An Introduction to Law and Economics
Published in Paperback by Aspen Publishers, Inc. (June, 2003)
Author: A. Mitchell Polinsky

Average review score:

A quick read that will help 1L's tremendously.
This book is concise yet thorough giving you enough Law and Econ to do well in your first year courses without overwhelming you in minutia. The examples build on each other and Polinsky does a nice job of tying things together at the end of each chapter.

Good introduction
I noted some time ago, in a review of Thomas Miceli's _Economics of the Law_, that this work is in some ways "orthogonal" to Miceli's. For one thing, Polinsky gives a fuller discussion of the Coase Theorem; for another, Polinsky at least raises the question whether there is some sort of tradeoff between "efficiency" and "equity." (The reader should be warned that neither of these terms means to an economist quite what it means to anyone else; "equity" in particular, as Polinsky himself is careful to explain, does not mean here what it means to a moral philosopher or a legal theorist.)

As an introductory text, it's a good one; Polinsky tends to organize his presentation around well-chosen examples, and his discussion is usually pretty clear and accessible. Moreover, in apparent contrast to Miceli, he doesn't invoke much mathematics even of an elementary sort.

But that mathematics is clearly lurking just beneath the surface of the words, and I caution the reader that Polinsky will be much easier to read if you've got some math background. (I don't mean graduate-level stuff; high-school algebra will likely be enough, and a little calculus will probably help.) This is a matter more of style than of substance; readers accustomed to dealing with mathematical texts will just be better equipped to worm their way into Polinsky's clear-but-dense prose and get his point.

In coverage, Polinsky's book is pretty close to Cooter and Ulen's, but Cooter and Ulen are probably much more accessible to the typical beginning reader. Despite the absence of explicit mathematics, I'd personally rank Polinsky closer to Miceli in terms of difficulty; if Cooter and Ulen are "elementary" and Miceli is "advanced," then Polinsky is "high intermediate." Your mileage may vary.

Really Well Written and Priced.
I originally bought Polinsky's book for a Law & Economics class in college and I feel this is a very good text on my favorite subject. One of the strongest aspects of this book is the writing is very accessible. Unlike some of his peers, I feel he writes not to impress or to complicate the subject with difficult machinations. Instead, his writing is directed at teaching you the concepts directly and forthrightly. You do not need to bring your economics decoder ring or your Black's Law dictionary to access the concepts or theories. The one weakness, and it isn't to most people, is that I would have loved to seen more visuals in the book. I am a visual learner and economics so easily lends itself to charts and visuals that I would have loved to see a bit more. Yet, I think Polinsky's writing more than makes up for any criticism such as mine. In fact, don't think of as a criticism, but think of it as a suggestion for his next edition.

Another thing I also like about the book is its price. While I would favor Cooter & Ulen's book on Law & Economics if I was going to use any text in the universe for an introduction to this topic, this book is almost as effective and significantly cheaper. Therefore, if you are Prof considering a book list, remember that college kids have to find the money somewhere. If you are a normal reader, this is a good place to start for the buck.

A Former Student Speaks
I read this book for a class I took from Joanne Hames, one of the authors, at the paralegal program I attend. I found the book very well- organized and practical. The subject matter not only covers all the basics, but it also equips the paralegal to succeed in today's high-tech law office. Also, the "Ethical Choices" and "Paralegals on the Job" sections in each chapter make the book quite dynamic. The authors of this book are experienced attorneys who know the law and are abreast of everything relevant to the modern paralegal.

All introductory books should be like this.
Both informative (covering the "high points" or notable and interesting aspects of law) and well-written so you can read it straight through and get a lot out of it. The best starting point I have seen for beginning to learn about law.

Excellent Paralegal Primer, Reference, & Refresher Text!
I love Introduction to Law by Joanne Banker Hames and Yvonne Ekern! You may wonder why I feel so passionate about a textbook? When I took an Introduction to Law course four years ago, a text like this wasn't available. I desired a text that would provide a good foundation and overview for my paralegal education. Since a good text was not available at the time, the instructor chose to put together a series of handouts to supplement his lectures. You can imagine how excited I was to come across such an excellent text as this one, that provides an overview of the law, as well as a reference, a refresher, and resource for years to come.

The topics begin with the American Legal System and finish with the continually growing field of Law and Technology. Each chapter is organized to take the student on an interactive educational experience into the paralegal field. Chapter summaries are provided at the end of each section along with questions to review. Case law is incorporated into each chapter to deepen the student's understanding of the area of law discussed, as well as introduce the student to reading case law and applying it to the chapter topic. Case questions provide students the intellectual challenge to utilize abstract thinking skills necessary for a paralegal's success both in school and on the job.

The text provides the necessary foundation for a paralegal program to build their curriculum from. It will constantly be referred to throughout the student's other courses.

If you are just beginning your paralegal education; if you've just graduated and are looking for an excellent overview of the law; or if you are a teacher in search of the perfect text for your class; look no further.

I hope this is the first of many paralegal texts to come from Yvonne Ekern and Joanne Banker Hames!

Great Ideas
This book has a great variety of ideas for frugal living without sacrificing quality. I keep mine as a catalog, so to speak. Not all of the ideas apply to me, but many of them do. This book was money very well spent -- which I am sure will make the authors happy!

Living well without breaking the bank!
This book is an excellent source for anyone who is trying to accomplish their goals which require a great amount of money. Not only do they offer tips and experiences, they also make the reader feel more at ease without the fancy grammar used in some books for living well.

Something for everyone
For over a decade I have loved reading YANKEE magazine and this book from the editors of YANKEE magazine is a gold mine of useful information.

Close to 400 pages that cover everything from Secrets of a Debt Free Life; Easy Ways To Increase Your Income; Spending Less on Furniture; Personal Care for Pennies; Frugal Ways to Deal with Financial Emergencies; Celebrating On a Budget; Holiday and Gift Giving on a Budget and Thrifty Travel and Vacation Ideas.

Now I cant use everything in the book, but I picked up enough helpful ideas I never knew about, to consider it a good investment and the nice thing is the Library now owns the book so think of all the others who will get advise as well.

Majoring in the Rest of Your Life: Career Secrets for College Students

Carol Carter, a publishing-industry executive and the author of a half-dozen employment guides, believes college students who truly want to succeed after graduation must actually start preparing as soon as they begin their post-high school education. In Majoring in the Rest of Your Life, she presents a series of suggestions designed to help these students move from their often unfocused freshman years to landing the job of their dreams. Chapters deal with defining interests and goals, balancing academic and personal lives, aiming for useful extracurricular activities and part-time jobs, networking, traveling, and, eventually, sending out résumés and going on interviews. Carter certainly defines the linkage between school world and real world in a way that makes the connection click, and then provides the tools (including six appendices containing more than 50 pages of additional information and resources) that just might make it stick. --Howard Rothman

For that floundering freshman
This is a book that helped shape my life. I was floundering in dozens of classes and toying with 4 or 5 different majors after already having changed twice. Every semester I opened up the course catalog and my head would spin and swim. I had no idea what I wanted to do. This book helped guide me to my natural strengths and abilities, and allowed me to look more realistically at the majors I was considering. Where I ended up was not where I thought I was going, and I am SO much better off because of it. Highly recommend. Additionally, for more introspective personal insight I strongly recommend Please Understand Me.

No better guide for the directionless college student
Teachers, do you have a student who just doesn't know what direction to take in life? Do they remind you of a boat adrift without a rudder? Carol Carter has written an excellent book aimed at that student. Majoring in the Rest of Your Life; Career Secrets for College Students, is outstanding in filling the need of providing a good overall sense of direction for the drifting college student.

Many of us have been there, or know others who have been there: entering college with no clue what to major in. Or picture this scenario: a recent college graduate who has no idea where he or she will get their first job. This book seeks to deal with the situation in which those students find themselves.

Carol Carter is Vice President and Publisher of Student Success and Career Development at Prentice Hall. She is particularly suited to writing this book, with unique personal qualifications based on her own experience and her work at Prentice Hall.

The book walks through interest and ability inventories to help students discern strengths and weaknesses. Tips on obtaining first jobs, networking, and handling rejection are interwoven with advice on internships, time management, and resumes.

Succinctly, we can't think of a better book for high school seniors and college students.

Great Book!
This is one of my all time favorite career/college planning books. Along with MAJOR IN SUCCESS it is informative, while also interesting reading. The author makes the student want to continue on with the book, and the "learning" process is almost effortless. An excellent resource for all underclass college students and college-bound high school seniors. Mary Becelia, Mary Washington College Office of Career Services, Fredericksburg VA

Make a Mil-Yen: Teaching English in Japan
Published in Paperback by Stone Bridge Press (01 June, 1994)
Author: Don Best
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

An excellent place to start
I am currently researching teaching opportunities in Japan, and they are plentiful. While I have yet to go to Japan, reading Don Best's book has answered a lot of questions I had had (e.g. how can one afford to live in Japan?). It includes information on the English industry in Japan, qualifications for teaching, suggested preparation before leaving for Japan, finding jobs, surviving in Japan, the interview (including hints on creating a demonstration lesson), pay, work visas, and settling in.

One concern I had was that this book was written in 1994. I wrote to two address in the book and both letters were sent back to me claiming the addresses were incorrect. I suggest checking (possibly through internet searches) addresses before writing to them. There are also a lot of informative websites to check out. If you are looking to get hired from outside Japan, look for websites of these employers: Aeon, Nova, Geos, Berlitz, and ECC.

Overall, this book seems like an excellent place to start if you're interested in teaching English in Japan. Even if some of the information may be outdated, it answers a lot of questions that readers will have about teaching in Japan and about Japan itself.

A one stop resouce
I taught English in Japan for about 2 years in the mid 90's. The experience was fantastic, and I made some of the best freinds of my life. Unfortunately, I read this book after the fact (after I had my job), but I certainly could have avoided some of the common pit-falls. This book really tells it like it is, and is a MUST BUY for anyone contemplating the adventure of a life-time.

Best guide available for finding a teaching job in Japan
Just returned from teaching in Japan. The truth is that finding a job is a lot more difficult than it was, say 5 years ago. But if you are the least bit interested, this is by far the best book available. Felt like I had a friend telling me the ins and outs of how to get my job. If you are really interested in the experience then go for it!

A must for Learning Cities
Smart cities, intelligent cities, thinking cities, learning cities - whatever your city's aspirations this book will not only make you think, it will make you act. I couldn't put it down as page after page of ideas, facts, case studies and new knowledge came before me. This is a must-read not just for educators but for councillors, city professionals and anyone who has the future of our cities in mind.

What the book is about
'A well-written, ideas-packed and scholarly text on its theme' (Biochemical education) 'I found this book tremendously stimulating' (Teaching in Higher Education) 'An excellent book in which the authors define Lifelong Learning and describe its far-reaching implications for every organisation, nation and individual throughout the world' (Times Ed Supp)

These are just three comments from the reviews of Professor Longworth's first book 'Lifelong Learning' (ISBN 0 7494 1972 5). In this forthcoming sequel, he turns his attention to how Lifelong Learning can be made to work in the community. He describes it as an agent for understanding and coping with accelerating change, using examples from communities which are already adapting for the future.

International Governmental Organisations like OECD, UNESCO and the World Bank may develop Lifelong Learning guidelines and Governments may produce White Papers, he says, but the place where it will happen is in the cities, towns and regions where the people live. This is where the action takes place.

This book will provide food for thought for opinion formers and decision makers as well as crucial material for teachers and lecturers, course developers and trainers in industry. But it will be of especial interest to civic leaders, professionals in all parts of local government and indeed all citizens with a concern for the future of their community.

CONTENTS

Within the many fascinating pages of this extra-ordinary book are:

1. Case Studies and examples from Britain, USA, Sweden, Finland, France, Italy, Canada, Australia, Japan, Spain and many other countries.

2. Examples of schools, businesses, universities, towns, cities, regions, adult education colleges etc meeting the challenge of the learning century

3. New insights and vision into the nature and content of lifelong learning and the actions needed to make it happen in all sectors of the community

THE BOOK THAT WILL TRANSFORM EVERY CITY, TOWN AND REGION INTO A LEARNING, CARING AND UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY

MAKING LIFELONG LEARNING WORK LEARNING CITIES FOR A LEARNING CENTURY

Norman Longworth

Lifelong learning is no longer merely a philosophy. As Norman Longworth shows in this lively and inspiring book, it has now become a rapidly developing reality. Learning communities, where business and industry, schools, colleges, universities, professional organizations and local government co-operate and build a dynamic new environment to foster learning, are springing up throughout the world. The future for learning, from cradle to grave, is entering an exciting new phase.

Using many concrete examples of learning communities that are already adapting for the future, Norman Longworth also describes the circumstances under which lifelong learning can help cities, towns and regions to design and implement strategies for change. Packed with case studies and vital insights into the world of learning communities, the book provides a highly readable and thought-provoking glimpse of the future of learning within society and the city.

This book's strength lies in Norman Longworth's deep knowledge of the multi-faceted nature of lifelong learning and the sympathetic, entertaining and highly readable way in which he describes the future of communities and their relationship to a globalised world. The future of learning is already here. Making Lifelong Learning Work distils the best global practices into workable local solutions and will make compelling and indispensible reading for every person, private or professional, in local government, education, industry and the community at large.

The Author:

Professor Norman Longworth has worked in Universities, Industry, Education and Professional Associations. He was awarded one of the first UNESCO Chairs in 1990 and is now a visiting professor at Napier and Sheffield Hallam Universities, where he is establishing a 'centre for the learning city'. He has a worldwide reputation in both distance education and lifelong learning through his innovative work in schools, universities, industry and the European Lifelong Learning Initiative, of which he was President and the World Initiative on Lifelong Learning, of which he was Vice-President. His previous book for Kogan Page, 'Lifelong Learning' co-written with Keith Davies, was published to great critical acclaim.

Must-have in Internet Industry!
This dictionary is fun and gorgeous! Great format: very light and ergonomic having over 500 pages of invaluable information! Clever design. Everyone in computer industry should have it on the desk, read it during lunch break, have it as a contemporary coffee-table book. You will learn something new even if you think you know all about it. It may open your eyes on terms you have used incorrectly. I am webdesigner with years of experience and I have always thought that "hacker" is a negative hero in the Internet jargon, but I was wrong according to Netlingo Dictionary... I believe that it's newest Net dictionary out there.

A Handy, Accessible Guide for Every Computer User
The Netlingo dictionary gives me an enormous assortment of Internet, computing, telecom, and networking terms for reference. The definitions are written in a laid-back, conversational tone. It's as readable and friendly as you can get in this technical area, but it doesn't get condescending or cutesy. I wind up reading the surrounding terms after I've looked something up. I've recommended it to my parents because any computer user will benefit from having the dictionary as he or she moves up the learning curve. Plus, the chat acronyms, smilies, and assicons are hilarious ;-)

The first NetLingo Review
NetLingo has become a wonderful resource for me in understanding what my 'web guys' are talking about. I am somewhat computer saavy, but sometimes get my cookies confused with my bytes. It is nice to finally have a reference beside my 14 year old nephew. I'm getting a copy today for my home office.
