Get a Grant: Yes You Can! (Grades K-8)

The price is the best thing about this book
OK, maybe the title of this review is unfair. Overall a nice book but it is a little too cute for me with sections labeled "Wow! I Got One!", "Oh No! I've Been Rejected!", and "Grants, Grants, Everywhere!". I do like the author's emphasis on a team-based approach to proposal writing which I have seen used to great success but it is too light on the stuff that seems to really matter like writing strong goals and objectives and a persuasive statement of need. This is a book I would probably recommend to someone in he field of education who was involved in the grant writing process but not the one who is actually writing the proposal. For this, I recommend Carlson's "Winning Grants Step by Step," or Bauer's " A Teacher's Guide to Winning Grants."

Borrow This Book At the Library!
I went to the library and went through pretty much the whole book. There really isn't anything unique this book has to offer, as most of its tips are rather practical and known.

The longest section of the book deals with the LSAT. The advice in this section mirrors what you would read when you register with the Law School Admission Council -- when the LSAT is administered, when you should take it, how to prepare, etc.

The most helpful section in this book discusses the value of volunteering during college, or doing internships with the local attorney's office. However, you can read this section at the library in less than 15 minutes.

I do not recommend buying this book. If you are really curious about its contents, just go to your library and check it out.

A rewarding simplification
Birnbaum provides an interesting analysis of educational institutions between 1960 and 2000 groping for silver bullets to salve perceived failures and save their positions of influence. The book is worth reading to understand something of the nature of education institutions' political climate. Birnbaum's premise is well stated and discussed admirably, not withstanding some simplification to accomplish this in under 300 pages. His writing style is quite readable, as always.

Managing cultural differences, instructor's guide
This is not a 300 page book. It's a loose-leaf booklet, titled "Part D: Chapter Learning Strategies European Supplement," by Jessica L. Walters for Managing Cultural Differences 4th edition.
Since I bought this for a friend of mine in Japan who wanted this for the latest edition of Managing Cultural Differences (5th Edition), I will have to see what he says when he compares them side by side...

National Guide to Funding for Elementary and Secondary Education
Published in Paperback by Foundation Center (May, 1995)
Authors: James E. Baumgartner and Foundation Center
Amazon base price: $135.00

This 725-page volume reports on 6,331 grants
There's no doubt about it. Seeking foundation, corporate and other charitable support for elementary and secondary education is tough. Often grants are sought by teachers, parents and volunteers, who have little or no real background in seeking such contributions. Even professional grant seekers employed by a school can be daunted in matching the needs of the client to the right foundations.     Yet, elementary and secondary schools succeeded in attracting more than $568 million in grants in 1995. If so much money is being given, how can your school get its fair (or unfair!) share?     One important place to begin the search for such grants is the Foundation Center's National Guide to Funding for Elementary & Secondary Education, 4th Edition. This 725-page volume reports on 6,331 grants in support of a variety of programs, including vocational, bilingual, and special education, curriculum development, and programs for gifted or minority students.     Entries include such useful information as foundation type, assets, expenditures, grants paid and number of grants made during the year, and so on. In fact, each entry contains 34 items of information.     So essential is this volume for those seeking grant dollars for elementary and secondary schools that I cannot imagine proceeding without it.
