Better guides are available
Rankings in this book are based on the opinions of ONLY those recruiters that the SCHOOL ITSELF directs the WSJ to. It's very, very likely that the schools did not refer the WSJ to recruiters with whom they've had less-than-enthusiastic relationships. Therefore, throw out these rankings.

Read the BusinessWeek guide (most recent - I think 2002?). It's as up-to-date as it needs to be for current applicants, it incorporates a wider variety of information into its rankings (though - like all rankings - the basis is subjective data) and it provides lenghty narratives on the top schools (including international schools). Much more helpful.

Nice complementary book for the one from BusinessWeek
First of all, the school rankings in this book are much different from those found in the other, better-known book from the BusinessWeek. It's so radically different that it places Stanford behind Brigham Young and Wake Forrest. The rationale, according to the book, is that the WSJ is using the recruiters' opinions as the major measurestick, instead of the schools' reputation or average GMAT scores. In a way, it makes sense because what ultimately matters for business schools would be the quality of end-products, namely the quality of graduates after 2 years of study, which would be judged the best by the recruiters.

But this book does not have much detailed information about each school. For a given school, the BusinessWeek guide contains description that's approximately three times longer than what's in this book (I own both). However, this book is much more up-to-date. The BW guide was published in sometime around 2000 and it's pathetically behind the times (it's talking about dot.com things). So, I recommend buying the BW guide first, and then using this book as a complementary material, which would be essential at least until BW comes up with a new, up-to-date version.

Useful off-shelf resource
The third in a series of interactive training game volumes by facilitator and author Gary Kroehnert, 102 Extra Training Games features useful off-shelf structured activities, learning games and instruments in ten categories: icebreakers, teambuilding, communication, presentation skills, energizers,problem-solving, learning, perception, evaluation and self management. Clear, informal and generally useful guidance on facilitating the activities is included. As the bound volume doesn't easily lend itself to high quality reproduction, I found the suggestions on reproducing visuals and handouts less credible. Today, many trainers will want to adapt these to electronic presentation formats or their own house style. For those using OHP, tearaway handouts and visuals would be a useful improvement.

As contributed activities form the bulk of the content, some activities (or variations) will be familar to experienced trainers and learning groups. Nevertheless, I found this volume useful. The informal style and sense of humor offers a refreshing antidote to other off-shelf training resources that take themselves too seriously. A few activities may be inappropriate where people are easily offended. 'Health warnings' are however included in the short trainer's guide for each activity. Let your good judgement be your guide.

Overall-recommended to new and experienced trainers alike who need off-shelf resources in the categories listed above. As with all learning resources, review the content first before you buy.

For a narrower audience than the title suggests
Despite the generality of the title, Hall's book is heavily bent towards an audience of humanities professors and graduate students whose careers are in - or will be in - teaching rather than research institutions. Although there is much that is accessible and relevant to a wider audience of academic professionals, Hall's heavy use of terminology from his own discipline (I still have no idea what a problematization is,) as well as his assumption that the reader is familiar with one particular school of self-help books, makes much of the book useless to someone who hasn't read and studied what he has.

The introduction is the worst part in this respect. If I wasn't given this book by someone who expected me to read it, I would have stopped right there. However, "The Academic Self" does oscillate between addressing Hall's fairly limited core audience and providing useful advice to a broader range of scholars, both at an abstract level and in terms of nuts-and-bolts, plan-out-your-day suggestions.

Very infromative; however also sedative!
Want to know where to find and use business information quickly and easily; then you should read this book, i.e., Business Information: How to Find It, How to Use It by Michael R. Lavin. Mr. Lavin has here been able to compile all the necessary business resources that a busy businessman needs to make the right business decisions. It is also a great guide for special librarians, whom sometimes get the not so enviable task to find hard to get financial information. However, the big downfall for this book is that it also has a strong sedative quality to it. Lavin's articles sometimes feel as if he was paid by the word and he writes in a very convoluted way (which is fine for literature, but not for the realm of business; which demands clarity and brevity).

This book needs some work
The range of occupations Dr. Thompson explores is impressive: Navajo Medicine Man wasn't on my guidance counselor's list of potential careers. The activities suggested for teachers are inventive, and she cites recent sources for her research. But the overall package looks like a sixth grade project. Photographs are muddy, graphics are poor and separated from text, and sometimes just strange. What's an ice axe doing on the River Guide's page? The packaging detracts from what should have been a stronger book. Better documentation next time.
