Fair - Not a stand-alone textbook
This textbook contained a lot of technical information but offered little connection to real-life macroeconomics. I love economics and feel that it is necessary to emphasize its everyday uses in order to motivate a student's learning.

Further, it is in no means a stand-alone text. By that I mean that it is not a text that can be utilized by a student independent of participation in a traditional classroom setting. Most of the topics are not expanded upon sufficiently to create true understanding of the concepts.

Excellent for Self-Study (Distance Learning) Courses
I used this book for a distance learning course in the principles of macroeconomics (Econ 101) and it is by far the best introductory text in macroeconomics I have encountered. Bade and Parkin explain the theory and concepts very clearly and constantly use examples of a typical consumer or company to illustrate these concepts even though they are describing a macroeconomy. For those of you who have taken Principles of Microeconomics before Macro, this is a HUGE PLUS, and for those of you who are taking Macro before Micro, you will not feel a sense of disconnect when you begin microecon after this class. The authors do a fine job integrating areas of micro and macroecon and not make the two feel incompatible. What's more, they do not leave out crucial explanations to graphs, figures and equations so those who do not have a strong background in mathematics need not be intimidated. The graphs, figures and equations indeed supplement the narrative and sufficient examples are given so you can master the quantitative aspects of the course. Just don't take short cuts and do read the entire chapter and concepts will sink in like you wouldn't believe. This is the 3rd time in my life I have attempted a study of macroeconomics and my efforts have previously been held back because of texts that were too complex or theoretical. I am now pulling a strong A and this is because the text does a good job of lowering the entry barrier to learning economics without sacrificing academic rigor.

The Grant Seeker's Resource Guide: A List of Resources For Those Seeking Private Or Federal Grants

Information a bit out of date
This book gives the information it claims to - the only problem is, a good portion of it is out of date. For example, the link for the government assistance catalogue leads you to an area of the Library of Congress website that indicates it's no longer maintained. When you finally find the link for the catalogue, it doesn't work.

Book Helpful in Finding Sources For Grants
This book was really helpful for me. It pointed me to many grant resources that I did not know existed before I read this book. One of the best parts of this book is that it shows you a variety of different places to find the same information, this is very important with the Internet changing all of the time. If you are looking for a general reference on where to find grants or information on grant makers, this book is a good place to start.

Really!
As one who works in the field of higher education fundraising, I'd say that one theme runs through this book--"the times are changing, and we're damned ticked off about." While there is some good advice for donors in this book, the premise that seems to underlie this is that neither fundraisers, nor university administrators can be trusted to carry out the wishes of donors. I strongly disagree. The vast majority of gifts to higher education are restricted in nature. By that I mean the donor has designated some purpose which he/she wishes fulfilled. In all but the rare case do institutions violate either the purpose or intent of the donor and consider stewardship to be a solemn pledge to carry out that intent. I don't think this book is particularly helpful in tone or content.

Make gifts to your alma mater really count!
A neat concise guide filled with common sense ideas on how to can make donations to your alma mater, or any school, work to improve learning and educational excellence.

Very extensive, but contact information may be incorrect.
This book offers a great variety of information on internships both in the U.S. and abroad. It also profiles former interns now turned famous. However, I have not been able to make much use of it yet. I tried calling one of the internship contact numbers listed to find out I was phoning a private residence; I tried e-mailing another contact and it too was incorrect. It seems the folks at Princeton Review have not put much effort into updating their information yearly. So, use it for the information, but beware that you may have to do research on your own to find actual updated information on the internships.

Pretty Comprehensive
It is a rather comprehensive reference on current internships. I even wrote a column for my school's student newspaper on "fun" internships using this book. It'll save you time and money if you're looking for a suitable internship. I used it extensively last summer even though I ended up finding my internship on the internet.

Not A Very Good Book!
I was really impressed by the title of this book. But when i actually bought it, i found out that it was not very detailed. I found other books like exam cram and exam prep etc much more informative than this one. If you want my advice go for any other book but this.

Microsoft is making it easier and easier to paas exams
Microsoft is the leader in the software world and as a leader they must ensure that those who work on their software must be qualified. The first step in this process is the Networking Essentials exam and Microsoft is gone and given you that perfect study companion.

This online training kit is a self-paced, complete objective coverage of the exam certification. You have over 250 topics to choose from and you are in control of what you study, when you study and for how you study.

One of the feature I really like is the "DASHBOARD", this gives you the ability to view tips, read the glossary and print out topics of your choice. The installation was easy and there were no major problems, I would however recommend a Pentium 233 processor.

Making the exam easier is one way of ensuring people pass; this online training kit is another. Microsoft is a trusted and respected name in the computer and software industry and this product proves their commitment to excellence.

common sense
This book only has common sense ideas in it. I generally like the motley fools products. However, this book should be purchased only by those who do not have a basic understanding of how to save or prepare for college. We all know it is best to start saving early and talk to people at the schools about how to get a scholarship.

Who Knew School Could be So Affordable?
This book tackles a daunting financial topic and makes it easy to digest. Best of all, it's only 125 pages, so I didn't have to commit hours and hours of my time to learn what I needed to know. The book offered charts, tables and plain English, distilling topics such as the Education IRA (now called the Coverdell ESA), 529 Plans (there are two main kinds of these and you can sock away up to $100,000 or more in them -- who knew??) and even paying for elementary school and grad school. Oh -- and did I mention that it's funny, too?

Not So Hot for Doctors....
While I must admit I did not READ the entire book, I did give it a fairly thorough skimming. As a physician preparing to start my job search I found this book to be minimally useful. The cover boldly proclaims that the book contains model resumes for DOCTORS, etc. Truth is there is not a single model resume for a physician/doctor to be found in this book. From my point of view I really wanted give the book 1 star, but I suppose there is some useful information here for nurses, technicians, and others involved in health care. The false advertising on the cover really burns that part of me next to where I usually keep my wallet. M.D.'s and D.O.'s look elsewhere!

great resource book for writing your resume!
I found this book very helpful when revising my resume 3 years ago. I combined several of the styles presented to put together a very dynamic resume. A great investment for certain!

may be accurate if you are a white male
After getting approximately 10 books on how to be a professor for Christmas, I was least impressed with this one, mainly for two reasons.
1. The author seems to be somewhat clueless when it comes to being female or non-white (or disabled or homosexual etc.) in academia. For example, at one point he says he doesn't understand why questions about marital status or children should be banned from the interview.
2. He contradicts himself many times. In the prologue he claims that academia is a meritocracy (something none of the other books I got seem to believe), but later makes it sound like it isn't. Additionally he claims that there are many institutions where research is not important or necessary (also something none of my other books believe), but in later chapters denies this.

His chapter on how to overcome teaching anxiety looks pretty good, but I would take the rest of what he says with a grain of salt....

Don't be misled by the subtitle
Don't let the subtitle fool you-there's something in here for everyone in academia, whether you've just signed up for grad school, just gotten tenure, or have attained that coveted full professor status. Developed from a course the author taught, the book is full of the same tongue in cheek humor that characterizes Dr. Vesilind's teaching. More than a "how to get the job" manual, this book covers not only "how to excel at the job once you have it" but "why excel at the job once you have it". The final chapter-"The academic career" is a must for those discouraged souls in the postdoctoral trenches-we all started down this road for a reason and it helps to remember why. As a scientist, I found the guide especially helpful, as most guides to academia are written with humanities professors in mind. While this book is applicable to careers in both the sciences and humanities, it doesn't overlook some of the fundamental differences between the fields in how the system "works".

The Struggle for Control of Public Education: Market Ideology Vs. Democratic Values
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (February, 2000)
Author: Michael Engel
Amazon base price: $54.50
Average review score:

Misunderstands both Democracy and Markets
This book had me both seriously annoyed and seriously confused within just a few pages. In the finest Orwellian tradition, the author redefines "democracy" to include some sort of socialist or quasi-socialist concept of economics that is taken for granted but never clearly defined. Thus, when he argues for "democratic" education, what he really argues for is an education system that follows his view of what a "democratic" society ought to look like - a view that he labels "democratic" without regard to whether it's what the majority wants.

The author correctly emphasizes the importance of cooperation toward shared goals to a democratic society. But he completely misses the fact that cooperating voluntarily in smaller groups is often better than fighting each other in the political arena over who gets to force their will onto everyone. As a result, he does a gross injustice to those of us who view the application of market forces in education not merely as an exercise in self-interest but as a way to achieve the fundamentally democratic goal of helping as many families as possible get as much of what they want as possible in their children's schools.

I do think the author has some worthwhile points regarding the dangers of some particular "reform" ideas that attempt to partially incorporate market principles without incorporating the most important market principle of all: choice. But even those would come across a lot better if the author didn't display an almost blind hatred toward markets.

Stop the Corporate Juggernaut in Our Schools
I originally picked up this book because of its Civic Education chapter. After I read that (excellent) chapter, I started reading other parts of the book as well.

If you care about the future of our schools, our children, and our country, you should read this book. Engel will open your eyes to the real and disturbing trend of corporate influence in public education.

In his conclusion, he urges you to get involved with your local school board, which never receives much input from the community. Go to the board meetings, find a candidate you support and help him/her win, run for the board yourself...just do SOMETHING before it's too late and we've lost control of our schools.
