Practical textbook
Public Relations for School Leaders is a useful combination of theory and practice. The authors dicuss public relations in the broader sense of building a sense of community both within and without the school itself. They use the case study technique to present practical applications, and the case studies are quite well done. The authors do not always distinquish clearly between a case study and a secton called administrative practice, but that presents no real problem to the student or the teacher.

The final two chapters on building a community relations plan are overly technical and too complicated. However, overall, this is a well written text which will be of use in a graduate program for school administrators.

The groceries we buy can help or harm our world.
Did you know that biodiversity is a matter that affects the plant and vegetable kingdom? Once there were many different kinds of apples, now it seems there are only a few kinds grown in great numbers for mass consumption. Because consumers demand perfect looking produce, growers are encouraged to use pesticides and other artificial methods to make produce look appealing. This practice is ecologically dangerous. This is an informative and practical book, with suggestions about how the average shopper can turn the tide of the potentially harmful demand for non-diverse, uniformly and artificially appealling produce

Grauate Tool
The book READY FOR THE REAL WORLD is an excellent preparation tool for college seniors. The book offers information in career planning, personal life, community responsibilities, financial planning, and alum activities.

Written in an easy-to-read style, READY FOR THE REAL WORLD covers most of the elements that college seniors must consider from the more practical aspect of the budgeting of finances to the often neglected consideration of psychological changes that take place as one goes from the rather protected status of a student to that as a job applicant and employee.

This book is an excellent one for college classes which are offered at the end of the senior year to help prepare students for life after college, but would also be helpful to individuals who are seriously thinking about the transition from college to the "real world."

The book includes checklists and activities that allow readers to assess their status financially, psychologically, and personally. I highly recommend this book.

Great for Beginner Hagglers!
I found this book to be extremely useful in my recent apartment search & car purchase. Linda Mack Ross brings forth many valuable questions that consumers need to ask... questions that did not necessarily come off the top of my head prior to reading her book. I felt much more confident walking into the dealership after honing my skills with her teachings. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering (& leary of) spending money on a product you know nothing about (ie: a car).

Starting an Indexing Business

useful, but too overpriced
Indexing isn't just for books... there are journals, databases, government documents, recordings, cd-roms, product catalogs and more. Unless you've done some indexing, you may not realize that indexing requires considerable knowledge--and this rings more true when you consider that 35% of the indexers appearing in this book's 1997 survey have master's degrees.

This book does not explain how to do indexing... although it does list books and courses where you can get that kind of instruction. Instead, as its title suggests, it focuses on the business aspect.

There's information about how to find indexing jobs, decide on billing, and select the equipment you need to get started. There are indexing agreements (designed by the American Society of Indexers) that you can take directly from the book and modify for use with your indexing business. Because the vast majority of indexers work from home, there are also tips for how to continue working full-time, while running your indexing business part-time out of your den.

I liked the survey section of the book the most because it reveals a lot about the standard practices of indexers... how they bill for their work, how they handle billing issues, how often they work, and how much they make. The survey also includes demographic information.

My only problem with this book is its price. There is some excellent information and it may be difficult to find it elsewhere, given that indexing will probably never experience the popularity of day trading or web design. However, this is a *thin* little book, and there is a chunk of space devoted to some *very* general suggestions on how to set up your business. Some of it just seems like common sense.

...should be required reading to get a teaching credential.
While the book deals with the types of teacher unionism in considerable detail, there is only brief mention of the need for teachers themselves to be teachers of unionism. Howard Zinn states in an interview, "If teacher unions want to be strong and well-supported, it's essential they not only be teacher unionists but teachers of unionism... to create a generation of students who support teachers and the movement of teachers for their rights."

If the survival of teacher unionism depends upon teachers teaching unionism, they will have to learn about it first. Teacher unions need to teach their members, certainly their site representatives about the history of unionism. Short of having a required course in the role of unions in public education, Transforming Teacher Unions: Fighting for Better Schools and Social Justice should be required reading at least for one of the many classes teachers have to take for a credential.

Product Recommended
I'm a student at a Canadian High School. I really wanted to go to school in the US, so I got this book. I was really going into it not knowing what to expect. This product really helped. I went into the test confident. This is a great product for people not knowing what to expect going into the test.

This book talked about how to save time. It also coaches you how to pay attention to detail (A problem I have)ie: Words to watch for in the question. Great book!

Wellness Programs for Taft-Hartley Funds
Published in Paperback by Intl Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (November, 1992)
Authors: Bernard Handel and Mitchell Langbert
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

The best available book on wellness programs
In "Wellness Programs in Taft Hartley Funds" Handel and Langbert question the cliches that wellness consultants present to fund managers. Yes, they argue, wellness programs judiciously applied can work. But wellness programs need to take the special characteristics of Taft Hartley funds into account. This book targets fund managers and other professionals involved in the day-to-day operation of Taft-Hartley funds. Such funds have lagged corporate plan sponsors in adopting wellness programs. One reason might be class bias inherent in wellness programs: Rank-and-file employees are typically less interested in health imagery than are managers and executives. It is incumbent upon Taft Hartley funds to help employees to better health free of class bias. Exercise programs, for example, serve little purpose for hard working longshoremen, who burn 10,000 calories a day.Over all, "Wellness Programs in Taft Hartley Funds" offers a balanced perspective on wellness programs for union workers. I highly recommend it to fund managers

A good, general textbook for jr. high consumer science
This is a good textbook for a junior high consumer science class. It is very general, though, and does not go in depth about the subjects it covers. I teach in an inner city school. Sometimes I find it too immature for some of my students.
