Great for all teachers
I use this book with preservice teachers but find it is also helpful for me - an elementary teacher with over 10 years of experience. Different types of portfolios are addressed including setting up your porfolio for an interview. This book is very easy to understand and use.

Ethics and case reviews
All educators must look at ethical issues, and this book uses case studies to look at these issues. A dry read, but important to consider.

How True it All Is
As a middle-class student trying to work his way through an education, I know first-hand that college tuition costs are incredibly out of whack with the income of the populous. By reading this book, not only did I receive insight on how to keep myself in school while slaving through the minimum-wage jungle, but also gave me hope. Knowing that I'm not alone helps tremendously, and gives me new strength to keep on going

Guide to e-communication a winner
The book is very quick reading and provides easy access to pertinent information. It includes lots of helpful tips and I consider it a good addition to Prentice Hall's series on business communication (particularly Mary Munter's "Guide to Managerial Communication"). Innovative insights aren't the focus here (although many of them may seem novel since most people still don't practice what DeTienne sets forth), rather the book serves as a refresher and reference for how to use the e-tools at our disposal. I will definitely keep a copy on my desk and recommend it to colleagues -- who knows, it might cut down on their misuse of the technology that's supposed to make my life easier...

Helpful, says everyone
Everyone I talk to tells me this is a great book to have for the sample tests. The readability of it is zero---make sure you have a supplement with words and phrases and background before you crack this open. It summarizes key points and thats IT. Then gives you sample quizes. And vocab. The thing everyone says is great is that it gives you the answers to the test and tells you the answer---and why the answer is right to the question they ask. Its helpful as an alternative source---if you are new to real estate, PLEASE don't just use this book. The vocabulary alone will KILL YOU! Use this as a study guide and practice material to your main work. And good luck!

Honey I Shrunk the Bills
I found this book very interesting and practical. The chapters that one will find beneficial is the various web sites where you can find bargains on various products such as carpeting, furnishing, etc. Also the author gives good advice on how you can reduce your energy costs such as using cold water for the rinse cycle. There is also good information on how to buy a used car. The author does not believe in buying a new car.

I have been practing alot of the advice that he is providing and did not find anything new for myself. Alot of this information is available online for free. In many cases he does not go far enough there are alot areas that were never covered. Save your money.

Flashcards in a book
If you learn best by repetitive exposure (i.e., flashcards), this book is for you. Rita's Hot Topics allows you to "quiz" yourself or work with a partner or group to study for the PMP exam. I recently passed the PMP and was helped by using this book (although it wasn't my only resource). The CD version of this book is also helpful, as it can be used in the car or at home, and the built-in timing forces you to work on answering questions quickly and correctly. On the negative side, I found it easy to get bored with this format, and ended up relying upon the book more heavily. Overall, however, it was worth the money I spent on it [($$$)].

How to Work with the Media

Sound Advice
If you want to get favorable media coverage, read this book. These two professors describe how to get a wider audience for your ideas. They have the credentials. In the back of the book there's a summary sheet on each one telling the extensive media coverage they're received, locally, regionally, and nationally.

They argue that one's academic credibility is enhanced by media coverage. But, in working with the media, they point out, a news source has to be ready when media people need them. It may not necessarily be at the convience of the interviewee. The first step in getting in the arena is to prepare a one page, media friendly fact sheet, listing your content areas and an overview of your background. Next, learn the players, who the gatekeepers are and "work the system."

Keep in mind, you're talking to the masses. Don't lecture. This isn't a university class. Keep it simple and easy to understand. Write for the general public. Op-ed columns, magazine articles, and newspaper features are ways of gaining initial media attention.

There's some very practical advice in this book. I've worked in both arenas, the media and academe. I can see how the two sometimes miscommunicate. This book goes a long way in breaking down those communication barriers.

Human Services?: That Must Be So Rewarding: A Practical Guide for Professional Development

For those who want the real scoop on human services!
Everyone who works in human services has at some time or another heard the remark, "you must be such a wonderful person to do such noble work". Dr. Bernstein confronts this attitude head on in her book, "Human Services . . . That must be so rewarding". She talks about the realities of working as human service professional & offers practical, real-world advice for those considering entering the field. I didn't find her "Tales of Disillusioned Diana" segments particularly helpful, but the comments of current & past professionals offer good insights & the "hands on" exercises recommended in each chapter encourage readers to apply lessons learned to their current situation. I think college professors educating future "human service" professionals will find Dr. Bernstein's offering an excellent dose of reality therapy for their students.
