How to be Human* : *Though an Economist
Published in Hardcover by UMP (05 December, 2000)
Author: Deirdre Nansen McCloskey
Amazon base price: $70.00
Average review score:

Read if Interested in What's Wrong with Economics Profession
"Most of the essays in "How to Be Human Though an Economist" were published originally in Deirdre McClosky's regular column in the "Eastern Economic Journal." The material is sophisticated and serious but not technical, and many noneconomists will be able to follow along with difficulty. In a short review, it is impossible to summarize all the essays. In general, the book has to do with the economics profession - what McClosky thinks is wrong with it and how to fix it. Much of the material will be familiar to anyone who has read McClosky's earlier books - "The Rhetoric of Economists" (1985), "The Writing of Economics" (1986), and "The Vices of Economists; The Virtues of the Bourgeoisie" (1997). The essays are grouped loosely around basic suggestions that sounds like those in the latest self-help book: be yourself, be brave, be ethical, write better, read more."

"A large section of the book is devoted to McClosky's on-going and largely futile war on "statistical significance." McClosky is not the only critic of how empirical statistical research is conducted, but she is certainly the most vocal one. Every economist who has ever estimated a regression equation should read these essays."

-From "The Independent Review," Fall 2002

Great Light Reading on Heavy Topics
This book is a collection of short articles published previously, all for the generalist economist. McCloskey skewers mainstream economics for its insular habits, woeful statistical techniques, and inability to change. I found all of the essays provocative. The style is chatty and conversational, and as McCloskey has interacted with many of the world's leading economists and Nobel laureates, it makes a great read. Highly recommended.

Leadership 101: Developing Leadership Skills for Resilient Youth Facilitator's Guide
Published in Paperback by youthleadership.com (01 April, 1997)
Authors: Mariam G. MacGregor and Mariam MacGregor
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

An OK start...
This author has created a semester-long guide for a high school leadership class. She covers the theory and some of the skills of leaders. As such, it is more cognitive than not, and even though she uses daily class exercises and feedback, it is not experiential. Her curriculum guide does not involve group projects or group process. She is oriented more toward intellectual and using ego-ideals than experience. She has midterm and final exams in this book.

Nevertheless, many of her points are well taken and worth reading.

For teachers interested in building classroom experiences that affect skills of leaders (e.g., active listening, self-concept and self-esteem, values, vision and goals, stress management), you might consider Susan Fritz's Interpersonal Skills for Leadership (Prentice-Hall, 1999), even though it is written for a college-level class. Using both MacGregor and Fritz, you will be able to create a very interesting set of cognitive and experiential lessons, aimed at both conceptual and skill-building outcomes.

A must for all educators interested in youth leadership
"Developing Leadership Skills for Resilient Youth" is an essential tool for people interested in developing leadership programs for youth. MacGregor has hit upon the perfect combination of formatted lessons and flexable curriculm sugesstions. This comprehensive facilitator's guide and the accompanying workbook provide an outstanding basis for developing a leadership program for any school or youth organization. Furthermore, this book can be used as a tool to measure and evaluate leadership skills and abilities for youth. MacGregor has easily achieved her goal of designing a resource which "establishes a foundation for youth leadershipeducation programs for adolescents and young adults"

Nice and Simple
This workbook stood out to me first, for it's affordable price. I needed some workbooks/ideas for a workshop I was doing. This is definately the way to go for a special needs group. It goes over the information and key ideas, then gives fill in the blank questions for the group.

Lifeskills For Workplace Communication Skills Mastery
Great instructional workbook that is written for special needs populations. Easy to understand concepts and perfect for supplemental use in teaching employment readiness skills. I highly recommend this workbook to special needs instructors and you can't beat the price !

The fervor with which people have dubbed our era the Information Age--an age to be dominated by those who master the mysterious art of "continuous learning"--is amazing. Yet amidst this unprecedented overflow of information, good old brain skills are needed for not only sorting through info but interpreting and applying it wisely.

That's the purpose of this compact and easily digestible "learning handbook." Its authors, a professor of higher education and a former teacher of human resources management, reassure us we can learn anything we need to know, be it new career/tech/computer skills, subjects we hated in grade school, or how to change a light bulb--presumably if we first "learn how to learn." From there, they introduce us to seven key "ways of learning": behavioral (learning new skills), cognitive (learning from presentations), inquiry (learning to think), using mental models (problem solving), collaborative (group learning), virtual reality (improving performance), and holistic (learning from experience.) The final section of the book is an overview of places to find the info and knowledge we're looking for--from the old-fashioned, bricks-and-mortar library to the newfangled browse-and-click Web.

If you're looking for a hands-on text to beef up your learning skills (complete with those use-your-own-experience self-tests and worksheets we all snicker at yet find so fun and invaluable), this isn't it. Although Managing Your Own Learning offers some general examples to illustrate its theories, it does far more bland lecturing than engaging (so much for learning by doing). What's more, the closing section on how to use libraries, the Internet, and other research tools is fairly simple-minded (on libraries, to wit: "The card catalog has been replaced with an online catalog accessed through a computer station...." No foolin'?) But if you're looking for a clear, concise survey of some of the major learning theories of the past few decades, translated out of the academic gobbledygook of their creators and into plain English with quick-summary sidebars and bulleted-list breakdowns, this is a fine book (it sort of reads like an introductory text for aspiring K-12 teachers). --Timothy Murphy

Insightful!
Managers and trainers rely on James R. Davis and Adelaide B. Davis' book on training strategies, which the authors now have adapted as a personal self-help guide to learning. Although they touch briefly on underlying learning theories and present examples of learning from diverse academic fields (i.e. psychology, sociology, philosophy and communications), this is primarily a step-by-step manual. It begins with a brief self-assessment, guiding you to examine your strengths and weaknesses and to decide what you want to learn. Then, the authors explain how and when to use each of the seven major approaches to learning: behavioral, cognitive, inquiry, mental models, collaborative, virtual realities and holistic learning. They also suggest the best ways to learn in each category. Their well organized book lists major principles, enumerates rules, and provides a summary of each chapter. We [...] recommend this individually directed manual to those who wish to make the most of the time they spend absorbing new information.

Summary of Learning how to learn
Very systematic approach of teaching learning how to learn.

Part one : motivate you to learn "Preparation for learning" Part two : teach you to learn ""Seven ways of learning" Part three : practise your learning "Maximizing Learning"

The look and feel are very good. You can find out the editing of the book made you read the book very comfortable.

A solid introduction to Distance Learning
This book is for those who want to learn more about distance learning, but don't know where to begin. The title of the book says "An Implementation Guide for Trainers and Human Resources Professionals" but this book would be helpful to any manager involved in distance learning, whether it is developing a program or evaluating the feasibility of implementation. Chapters include basic overviews of audio, video and web-based learning, determining if your company is ready and program design & delivery. The book includes some valuable information about the differences between the different methods of distance learning. This is a no-nonsense approach without a lot of fluff, but offers some sensible, solid content and a good introduction to the topic. Recommended.

Practical Wisdom
This book offers practical wisdom on how to successfully design and implement a distance learning system. It is written by proven professionals who know what it takes to get a major change initiative completed in the corporate environment. I highly recommend the book!

Money management from a Christian perspective
An important fact to note about the author is that he is the "founder and president of Christian Financial Concepts, Inc., a ministry dedicated to teaching God's priniciples of financial management." (from the back cover) This doesn't affect the quality of his advice, but it may affect whether you buy this book as gift for someone else who may be an atheist or follow a religion other than Christianity.

Very Helpful for College Students with budgets
Larry Burkett's Managing Money book was wonderfully helpful. I am a college student and was really struggling with budgeting my money. By using this book, I was able to really see how my money was being spent, ways to change my spending habits, and ways to be smart about the money I have. I would recommend this book to any college students, high school students, or young adults who are struggling with using their moeny wisely.

More Pleasant Surprises
The sequel to "Team Building Activities for Every Group" is another decent activity resource book by Alanna Jones. I was pleasantly surprised by the first and equally happy with this publication.

Some of the similarities are unfortunate. Like the first book, there are few diagrams and illustrations. Also, several of the activities might have been better served with more detailed descriptions. Finally, those with access to other experiential activity resource books will discover several renamed, recycled selections. For example, what you may know as "bull ring" becomes "ball ring" in this publication.

The good news? The book provides a number of decent, portable, no-props - low props, experiential activities. The majority of the 107 descriptions are clear and concise. Discussion prompts and activity variations are included whenever appropriate. Finally, when compared to other more costly publications or poor quality books, "More Team Building Activities" is a terrific value.

If you have experience facilitating groups you will almost certainly discover (or rediscover) activities to enhance your programs. I anticipate this selection becoming a frequently referenced book in our program's resource library.

This book DOES offer more!
I use the book "Team-Building Activities for Every Group" all the time and found this book is full of just as many new and great activities, if not more! This book seems to have more active games and a wider variety of new games! I use this book for my church group, soccer team and at the ropes course where I am a facilitator.

Well written book on knowledge creation
Professor Barton has written an extremely readable book on a very imporotant topic, knowledge creation. Now a days, knowledge has become a buzz word in alomost every sphere of economic activities. But what does it mean? What does it take to create knowldege? This book addresses such questions. Barton has done important research on the subject and has produced the book with some new concepts that are extremely important in management. Her idea of "core rigidity" is indeed something every senior executive should think about.

A very worthwhile read.
This book would serve both seasoned knowledge practioners and those new to the field equally well. The writing is clear and crisp, and the content is well organized. I highly recommend this book for anyone charged with implementing knowledge strategies or at all interested in the topic.
