the accelarating organization
very updated, helpful in managing change in big organizations

It's people, people, people!
I have always been interested in culture and human aspects of the firm. This book was highly recommended by my teacher on strategic management as his favorite on change management. It's an easy read on the human aspects of change and is helped by a novel structure in the book (each subsection of the chapter reads like an individual chapter, which assists the dropping and picking up). It's no nonsense. Anyone who liked 'The Fifth Discipline', will much appreciate this as well. I hope to read more of this type material.

A "do-able" resource on the constantly learning organization
The Accelerating Organization is an excellent resource of ideas on how to develop a constantly learning organization. Maira and Scott-Morgan provide many clear and concise concepts in developing a new organization or moving an existing organization into a learning system. Every point is illustrated from a plethora of international business situations. Not only is "The Accelerating Organization" informative, it is "do-able."

Perfectly Practical
I love this book! It's so easy (and fun) to read. It's got chapters for buying new products as well as buying "Secondhand Rose" stuff at auctions and estate sales and a very detailed index, perfect for looking up an area I want to concentrate on. I just looked up holiday gifts and found some terrific ideas for bargain buying now, instead of waiting until December. This book is full of practical information on how to make your money go further while having fun at the same time.

Advice That Works !
A excellent primer on getting great deals on all kinds of products, from clothing to computers to cars. Besides the great advice (which really does work!), the book is a fun read, with lots of tip boxes and sidebars that share the authors' own experiences.

Practical strategies for getting the best possible deal
Collaboratively written by Art Beroff (a professional investment banker and member of the Small Business Administration National Advisory Council), with the collaborative assistance of Rob Adams and Terry Adams (real estate development and property management experts who buy distressed properties and then remodels and furnishes them for a profit), The Bargain Hunter's & Smart Consumer's Field Guide is a solid and accessibly presented money-saving guide to getting discounts when shopping or utilizing service providers; using the Internet for finding bargain prices; negotiate like a professional over real estate; and much, much more. The text is comprised of motivational, down-to-earth language, showcasing accessible and practical strategies for getting the best possible deal, while avoiding scams. The Bargain Hunter's & Smart Consumer's Field Guide is a thoroughly "user friendly" how-to guide that will literally pay for itself over and over again.

Very Useful Book
No doubt, a very useful guide to methods of financing a college education. Also check out "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick, which clues you in about West Point, the college at which everyone is there on full scholarship paid by the government.

The best book ever written about saving for college!
This book unlocks the secrets of saving for college like the 401k plan did for saving for retirement. A real must for all families to understand. Makes a great present.

A fantastic summary of 529 plans
This book should be read by anyone planning to send a child to college. After reading this book, I started college savings accounts for my daughterin New York and New Hampshire. This is definitely the "sleeper" tax break which everyone should know about. Forget the pitiful Education IRA. The 529 plans are where it's at!!

Once upon a time, buying stuff on the Internet was easy. Once you were satisfied that your personal information was adequately protected by encryption and other security technologies, all you had to do was find what you wanted and submit your credit card details. You can still do that, but the Internet now boasts a myriad of ways for you to get stuff you want.

The number of facilities for selling your own goods to others is exploding too. Preston Gralla explains all of this in The Complete Idiot's Guide to Online Shopping, providing you with the background knowledge you need to buy and sell things on the Web; explaining such concepts as Dutch auctions and electronic coupons; and intelligently combining the capabilities of commercial sites, such as the numerous online automobile dealers, with free resources such as government crash-test numbers. He also shows how to milk Usenet newsgroups and consumer sites for commentary and buying advice.

A large part of this book consists of commentary on various online storefronts. Most of the entries deal with books, CDs, clothing, food products, and computer stuff, and it's not fair to fault him for omitting sites in an online-shopping universe that's changing so rapidly. Notwithstanding, you'll probably want to supplement Gralla's listings with fresher sources of information about places to shop online. You'll also likely get more assistance from online resources if you're looking for stuff other than mainstream consumer goods--say, parts for a specific car or specialized metalworking tools. --David Wall

Topics covered: Basics of Internet transactions, security considerations, avoiding scams, finding bargains, buying and selling at auction, researching and buying automobiles, searching for houses and apartments, and buying various consumer goods.

A Must Have for Teachers Who Want a Job!
I bought this book knowing that the authors worked in the schools as administrators. They were in charge of hiring and firing. This would help me to know what is expected of me when looking for a job. The book is filled with important information and tips. It not only covers the basic resume and cover letter but how to make it stand out! They mention what you should wear to an interview and how to answer some difficult questions. They provide internet links to popular job links for educators. The book includes how to create a portfolio, how to sit, some frequently asked questions, and tons of interview questions.

This book is recommended on every education web site that I have been to recently. I have found this book helpful in presenting me in a good light and as a unique employee. After using this book, I just received a call for me to have my second interview. This book is a must for every teacher seeking a job today!

This book is a MUST-HAVE!!!
This book is a must-have for ALL prospective teachers, whether one is a recent college grad, teacher switching districts, or a career-changer. It is written by two renouned school administrators who give a wealth of inside tips for making onself the best possible candidate, regardless of what the situation is. I was amazed at how thorough the book is - every question and concern I had was answered in-depth in these pages. How to Get the Teaching Job You Want includes worksheets for candidates to self-reflect on their teaching philosophies, and forms to record research on each school's background. By using these forms, candidates can write an attention-grabbing cover letter and resume which will match their strengths with the school's needs. Drs. Feirson and Weitzman also provide a number of useful Web sites that will provide information on a school's economic background, student body, state test scores, etc. Best of all, they provide step-by-step procedures for how to locate information on each of these sites. Truly helpful is the "Top 100 Interview Questions" that is sure to prepare a candidate for any interview, no matter how grueling. Feirson and Weitzman explain how to create effective portfolios (even digital portfolios) and how to refer to photos as evidence during your interview. Furthermore, they include a list of questions YOU should ask interviewers to show genuine interest in the school. Lastly, Feirson and Weitzman include a glossary of educational jargon that up-to-date candidates should be familiar with. If you are seeking an educationally-related job, give this book a thorough read ASAP. If your competition reads it and you don't, you will be at a significant disadvantage.

A First Rate Job Hunting Guide for Prospective Teachers
Having just read through over 100 resumes for one social studies teaching position ("more applicants than jobs" category, according to the authors), I can tell you that this book is a must-read for prospective teacher candidates. It offers a treasure trove of real-life, up-to-date, and valuable advice for job seekers, ranging from resume writing, how to interview, and where to find on-line information about school districts across the country. This is an extremely valuable and worthwhile guide for recent graduates, career changers, and even school administrators looking for competent and qualified teachers. I highly recommend it!!

While taking accounting at the other New York business school, I deep sixed my assigned accounting book and instead borrowed my wife's. It coverage of topics and pedagogical flow are quite approachable and manageable. Struggling friends begain to purchase it for themselves. An excellent book. An interesting book as well. Case examples and references keep things interesting. Not just dry rules.

accounting study guide i want a complete book

An excellent text to ease you into accounting
Accounting is the type of subject that can ramp up quickly in difficulty, and this text plots a nearly perfect learning curve in getting the reader well-grounded in the fundamentals. I purchased this text as a requirement for a course, but it is a definite keeper and I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone interested in learning about accounting.

Dated, but still valuable!
I can't say I was fully suprised when my local library finally took this book from the shelf due to its age. What really suprised me was that I had to come here to actually buy it! Most etiquette books are usually the type to sit on a 'For Sale' rack until nearly eternity.

'Outclassing the Competition' is a bit dated but the advice is invaluable to anyone who would seriously wish to advance themselves socially and be seen as having more manners than most of the general public. Even a slight usage of the techniques in this book would set a reader above a great number of the general public these days. Ranging from pronunciation of words and use of terms, to cooking and entertaining this book has nearly all of what most would want to find out and apply to the 'better' situation life has dealt them.
My only wish would be for Ms. Darling to come up with an updated, revised version of this wonderful work. Simply because while 'class' never goes out-of-fashion, times do change.

Still Timely After nearly 20 Years!
I have been referring to this book for nearly 20 years ! As I have risen in the ranks of Corporate Events, I have leaned heavily on Jan Darling's knowledge to make both my client and me look good. Yes, some of the suggestions are a little dated ( Godiva chocolate is not the status purchase it once was) but knowing how to behave in unfamiliar situations, knowing what to say and displaying beautiful manners never, ever go out of style. And,no, I am not selling my copy for love nor money - would love for Ms. Darling to issue an updated edition, though!

Best Book on the Fine Art of Executive Social Skills
I can't believe this book is out of print. My copy of this edition has been circulated to several executives who lacked the time or training to perform skillfully in social events such as formal dinners and parties. This is the ideal book for the folks who had to spend their energy in university learning mathematics rather than learning how to survive in formal social settings.

This book is a godsend!
For those of us who feel intimidated by the relentless pace of technological change, this book is a godsend. Not only does the author help make sense of how new technologies are altering the workplace, but she also provides practical advice on how to make the most of one's skills and interests in such an environment. Goldberg writes with clarity and grace. The tips at the end of each chapter offer excellent guidance for adapting to a high-tech world and inspire the reader to continue to think about these issues on his or her own. All in all, a valuable and accessible book that can help readers find their place in an increasingly complex world.

A Must Read for Those Advers to Technology
I found the book extremely useful. If there is anyone who has an aversion to technology, this is the book to read. As usual, Ms. Goldberg's style is fluid and cogent. It is an easy read and well done. Congratulations on a much needed book in today's hi-tech society.

A great tool for reluctant employees
This is proving a great tool for getting reluctant employees to face the fact that they simply have to deal with computers. It provides enough information and tips about working in this new way, without ever getting technical, to get people relaxed enough to accept training with hope instead of terror.

I will call this book Mentoring the Trainer
Artistry in Training is good self help book for any Trainer. Stephanie has provided friendly guidance for being a confident Trainer. Her style of presenting facts, analysing them and offering of expert advise with empathy is the hallmark of this book.I find in this book a strong reasoning for every guidance offered.

The book reflects great clarity and confidence in her field.Chapter 3 and chapter 7 is superb.I will call this book as Mentoring the Trainer.

Thanks very much..

This book is real friend
Artistry in Training is a book I have been 'friends' with for 3 years now, long before meeting Stephanie. The experiences that Stephanie shares are real, tell it like it is and have enabled me to get a better understanding of this wonderful career path of being a trainer of adults and the wonderful interactions and dynamics they bring to a training environ. No special skills required to understand and gain from this 'friend'. When you feel alone on the path you are trying to forge for yourself, turn to Artistry in Training for a friendly help and reminder of why you are doing what you are doing.

Breaking New Ground
Ever given a presentation to a room full of people and realised that you were failing dismally? Ever had one student in your class who you just couldn't reach? Ever thought of giving up teaching/presenting because it's no fun anymore and your audience is getting tougher to handle everyday? Ever wanted to be better at what you do and don't know who to turn to for the answers? - well read on.

A new book entitled Artistry in Training by Stephanie Burns takes us to a higher level of understanding about the role and impact of the educator/trainer, in a concisely written, logically sequenced and easy to read format. Before we start, perhaps some definitions are necessary. Throughout the book Burns uses the term trainer to describe "anyone seeking to change or modify human behaviour - affecting the skills or actions, the thoughts and emotions of other people" (she covers this well in a section within her introduction entitled "What's in a Name"). So, for the purpose of this review I will use the term trainer to identify anyone involved in the teaching world - coach, teacher, counsellor, leader, sales manager. Further, Burns refers to members of the audience as students. So again, I will use this term throughout this review. Finally, whilst Burns has spent much of her life focussing on adult education, her focus is on education and learning. The methodology detailed in Artistry in Training has equal application to a group of five year olds or fifty year olds, so I will not distinguish adult or child education in this review, I will simply use the term education.

Now, if you want another "how to training book", stop right here, Artistry in Training is not for you. If however you are seeking to understand the experience of the learner, what is happening in your classroom and what you need to do to achieve 100% participation and results from your students, then Artistry in Training is an essential read.

Firstly, let's start with the author. American Stephanie Burns is a leading force in the field of education. She has spent her lengthy career exploring the "why's" of learning (both as student and educator), specialising in the area of adult education. Burn's client list (attained from another source) reads like a 'who's who' of world business. Try NASA, Coca Cola, ABC-TV and General Electric to name a few, and you have got to sit up and take note of what Burns is saying. Now resident in Australia, Burns has placed much of her recent focus on sharing her knowledge with other trainers in the live seminar environment. One suspects from her acknowledgments at the start of this book, that Burns was cajoled into writing Artistry in Training by her publishers, Woodslane, and to them we owe a debt of gratitude. For Artistry in Training is truly ground breaking and streets ahead of other training materials on the market.

Burns had me by page 9 of Artistry in Training when, after sharing an amusing story about her first training attempt, she writes " that those with perseverance and a willingness to make all their experiences useful, will without doubt succeed". Anyone who has sought to train or educate another person in anything, must surely be inspired by this line. So what makes Burns approach to the world of education different? Simply, it is these three core concepts.

1.Know and understand the learner's experience - realise that students are not all the same. 2.Understand the range and flexibility of behaviours that you as a trainer possess. 3.Develop coherent presentations/materials that make sense.

Now don't be fooled here. These concepts whilst making inordinate sense as one liners, are the result of years of research and study and are backed by a mass of theoretical data which Burns has painstakingly gathered from around the globe. What I particularly like about Burns work is that she obviously understands why her work works (or fails as in her first training experience) and this is well communicated throughout the book. This is probably what makes Burns unique and allows her message to be labelled ground breaking. There is no guess work here and as we read the book we can see that Burns has tested every concept and idea in real learning environments. Artistry in Training is a true blend of academic foundation and experience, which has been simply translated for the most experienced or novice trainer.

An easy 250 page read, Artistry in Training is extraordinary in its detail. Burns use of anecdotes keeps the reader grounded in the real world and builds a bridge of shared experiences which most readers will immediately relate to. The construction of the book (7 chapters) is solid, with each chapter containing an introduction, body and summary. Whilst I would not recommend it, this format allows the reader to read the book based on chapter interest, instead of from front to back. An FAQ chapter concludes the book, which is particularly useful for those hungry for immediate practical application. Entitled " Going Real-Time" this section has quickly become my favourite.

Artistry in Training is an enthralling first time read and for anyone engaged in the education field, a constant companion that will age well with time. So if you are charged with the task of teaching anything to anyone, Artistry in Training must be your first port of call. It is practical, intelligently written and provides hope to anyone seeking to communicate a message.

Good and Practical Advice for Would-Be Teachers
Like some other reviewers, I am currently looking for a teaching position. I ordered this book and found it had very good information on where to find jobs, how to write a resume, and how to answer possible interview questions. I would say the resume part was the most useful so far, as few resume books have examples of teacher resumes. From the examples provided I was able to construct a more condensed resume from the three-page one I previously had.

However, the jury is out in so far as whether I will be able to obtain employment in the field even with this advice. The reason I did not give this book five stars is that there was not a whole lot of information for those people who are changing careers in mid-life. Most of the emphasis seemed directed at those traditional college age graduates with little or no employment experience.

Must Have For All Teachers
I found this book to be a must have for all teachers. As a recent graduate with a teaching degree, I was nervous about finding the right teaching job for me. I used the techniques and suggestions in the book. I was offered a job from my very first teaching interview.

A great resource for those "still looking"
I just got this book and have only flipped through it, but already I can tell it will be a great asset. I am a recent graduate with a teaching degree. Our last year we had several seminars and workshops on interviews and finding a job. I have notes scattered all over the place. This book puts all the same info in one place and a whole lot more. Really great interview tips. Lots of potential questions and what not to do or say during an interview. I can't wait to read this book in depth! A definite "must have" in the increasing competitiveness of the teaching job market!
