Now teenage girls can learn about making money
Growing out of her studies of women entrepreneurs, Ms. Godfrey formed the group An Income of Her Own. The educational foundation is designed to level the playing field, by providing teenage girls with the same opportunities that teenage boys traditionally enjoy: namely, to learn at a young age how money is made. This book is full of hands-on ideas for educating girls in business on a local level. END

Great Stand-Alone Office Manual: 4½ stars
Out of all the office reference manuals I own, I use this one the most. The spirals are practical, making it easy to use; plus the book's small enough to store just about anywhere near your computer. The primary purpose of this book is "to help transcription and others produce correctly written and formatted documents," which it does do. It's also meant to be used in conjunction with "Transcription Skills for Business" by Linda Mallinson, Lois Meyer, and Ruth Moyer (which I also have). Yet, as this book mentions, it's not necessary to have both books, especially since this one is the more practical of the two, being geared for the office setting, while the other is mainly for transcription purposes.

The major topics touched upon in "The Office Guide" are troublesome similar-sounding words (like 'patients' and 'patience'), foreign words ('id est', or 'i.e.'), and their respective meanings, as well as some of the following topics: proofreaders' and punctuation marks; postal and address guidelines; appropriate grammar use; document formats for letters, memos, agendas, minutes, etc. (includes 12 convenient examples of what some of them should look like); and filing procedures (alphabetic, numeric, etc.). Most of this stuff seems simple enough, but it's amazing how easily it is to goof up on a lot of it. I found numerous common errors I make all the time.

I did want to mention that, while "The Office Guide" is functional, most software programs nowadays have templates, spell check, and formatting tools that make writing letters and such less of a headache. Yet for those who are stuck using something from back in the Stone Age, like WordPerfect, then this book is a lifesaver. It's also simple enough to be used in a business, English, and/or computer class setting for middle and high schoolers.

An indispensable resource
I'm an Executive Administrative Assistant, and I reach for this guide as often as I do my dictionary and thesaurus. It's a simple-to-use, concise resource, and the spiral binding is very convenient. If you're looking to buy only one guide, this is the one.

great quotes and inspirational - Now what?
I gave this book 4 stars because, while it was refreshing to read and I definitely learned quite a bit, it wasn't a paradigm-shifting book, which is what I am increasingly moving towards for my 5 star books.

I love these small books full of great little inspiration and motivational quotes. I believe John Maxwell's book, The Power of Leadership, is an even better read for those looking to better themselves and get a peak at how the world's greatest businessmen and politicians think.

The key to ranking this book depends on what you are seeking to get out of the book.

They key to getting long-term value out of a book like this is to highlight the quotes you love and integrate them into your daily life. Practice what you read essentially. Hope this helps everyone.

Improve Yourself to Improve All of Your Relationships
This is a good book of brief quotes and sayings about human relationships. Since I found it listed as a management book, I thought that's what it would be about. Actually, it begins in that vein and goes on to include marriage, parenting, and friendship. The overall theme is that you have to improve if you want your relationships to improve. As Mother Teresa said (and is quoted in the book), "It is by forgiving that one is forgiven."

The authors of the sayings include John C. Maxwell (the author), the Bible, outstanding people, philosophers, business people, and politicians.

In some cases, it wasn't clear who was the source of the quote. That was the only drawback I saw here. Unlike some books of quotations, this one had a consistent theme that was intelligently developed through the many quotes in the book. I especially liked the lead-in on page 4 which is a list of 10 commandments of human relations (best practices for copyright law suggest that lists like this not be quoted in reviews or I would give it to you in total).

Here are some of my favorites from other parts of the book:

"Ninety percent of the friction of daily life is caused by the wrong tone of voice." -- John C. Maxwell

"Ninety percent of the art of living consists of getting along with people you cannot stand." -- Samuel Goldwyn

"People aren't sales resistant -- they are salespeople resistant." -- Mark Hebenstreit

"I will pay more for the ability to deal with people than for any other ability under the sun." -- John D. Rockefeller

"We cannot forgive another for not being ourselves." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"The only way to have a friend is to be one." -- Emerson

These are good reminders of things we all know, and forget to do. So overcome your procrastination stall by reading and applying a few of these bits of good advice daily! You'll certainly like yourself better if you do. It's not a bad idea to have a valid reason for thinking better of yourself.

A OK book
The other "CV" book "The Curriculum Vitae Handbook : How to Present and Promote Your Academic Career" by Rebecca Anthony and Gerald Roe cover more materials although this one provided some pratcical tips, such as Tips for Producing a Scannable Curriculum Vitae, 3 Listing Competencies and Skills Step I: Competencies Step II: Credentials Step III: Skills Step IV: Levels or Degrees of Proficiency Step V: Review and so on. I found this book helpful, although if you only have the budget to buy one CV book, I'll probably recommend the other one..

An Outstanding Guide to CV Preparation
In this time of traumatizing economic upheaval, every advantage in the competition for jobs, no matter how slight, matters. As such, how one presents oneself is often more important than what one presents to the public. Jackson's book, Prepare Your Curriculum Vitae, gives the intelligent job seeker an advantage in the job search in two ways. First, it prepares the reader emotionally for the task of charting one's life and career via detailed documentation of events and achievements. Second, it clearly and skillfully guides the reader through the mechanics of putting one's best foot forward on paper. As such, the book combines an emphasis on content with important dimensions of style to give the job seeker a crucial and badly needed advantage in the competition for jobs.

The first chapter, 'Getting Started: The Emotional Dimension', offers excellent, quality exercises to put the reader in the proper frame of mind to write an outstanding and noticeable CV. A strong and successful CV is the product of considerable time and effort devoted to personal reflection. As such, the chapter helps to build a positive and realistic attitude toward CV preparation, and makes the writing process much easier to perform. After making an honest attempt to do the exercises in the first chapter, I was truly amazed at my own perspective, and what I as a person had accomplished. Before completing the exercises, I had held my accomplishments in very low regard, and I had the general impression that I did not know anything and had not done anything of true significance or value. As such, I see the first chapter as a psychologically beneficial means to boost both self-confidence and self-esteem.

Given the format and structure of the text, the second chapter on electronic resumes should have logically followed the chapters on drafting and preparing CVs and the chapter of sample CVs. The real work associated with CV preparation and writing begins with the third chapter, 'Listing Competencies and Skills'. Here, in a five-step process, the text encourages the reader to identify his or her competencies and skills. For each competency and skill, the reader learns how to make both broad assessments and exacting statements about his or her level, or degree, of proficiency. The reader finally reviews his or her competencies, and then chooses which to state on the CV based on individual career objectives, position sought and the degree of importance of each competency. The fourth chapter immerses the reader in the preparation of working drafts. After presenting the contents of a typical CV to the reader, each portion of the CV, from the objectives and education to the interests and references, are subjected to a three-step process of draft, revision and final version. Once each part of the CV is completed, the entire CV is stylistically assembled in a way most pleasing to the potential viewers of the document. The fifth chapter gives the reader the usual advice regarding the polishing of the final draft of the CV. Chapters six and seven go through the mechanics of writing effective cover letters and other correspondence associated with job seeking, and provides numerous, detailed samples of each type of correspondence, as well as the successful distribution of your CV. Chapter eight offers numerous examples of CV organization and style across all disciplines at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels. Four appendices round out the book, and offer information on abbreviations, a list of action verbs used in resume preparation, contact information for selected professional organizations and societies, and a select list of books on style in writing.

The book repeatedly emphasizes that care should be taken to describe accomplishments in clear, concise terms, and that the content of the CV should be slanted toward the particular objective in mind. The text also stresses that because the CV serves simultaneously as a calling card and as marketing, sales and promotional material for the individual, it pays to be a strong advocate of oneself and one's accomplishments.

Apart from some minor organizational problems, the book is an excellent source of information and inspiration for those who have no previous experience writing CVs. More experienced and advanced individuals can still use this book as a basis for CV preparation, albeit at a faster pace than those new to the endeavor. No graduate student or professional should be without this important and invaluable text.

Clarity, accuracy
After scanning this and six other similar books, I chose this one for my home study. There is an intellectual clarity in _RE Fundamentals_ that makes it stand out from the others. It has the accuracy of a scholarly work without being opaque. No marketing hype here. Nothing about how rich you are going to be. Quizzes at the end of each chapter are brief but adequate.

Good real estate primer...
This is the book that is given with the pre-licence classes at the tennessee real estate education system(TREES). The class is not taught right from the book but they believe that this book is a solid primer and reference point. I agree, this book provides all the basic general information needed to pass the real estate exam anywhere and it is presented in an organized easy to read format. Also the price is very reasonable compared to other RE primers. I recommend it.

A map through the maze of medical careers in the UK
This book is a bible for the confused junior doctor or medical student deciding which path to take. For every speciality, there is essential information about the reality of the job - a refreshing change from the abstract, idealistic and stereotypical ideas so often perpetuated by our profession. Particulary useful is the information on those things that matter most: pay, working hours, competitiveness, nights, opportunity for private practice, stress and amount of litigation. It also includes useful contact details, tips to race ahead of the crowd, sections on opportunities abroad and alternative careers for doctors who have had enough. In short, this book is a map through the maze of medical careers - a great investment.

Incredible
This has got to be the best book regarding medical careers I have ever read. The contents is both informative yet readable, and the cartoons and pictures give the book a humourous feel. This book is incredible.
