Very helpful guide for the business school selection process
If you are certain that you have no interest in studying outside the U.S. or Canada, then this book provides a good amount of information on the business schools on which you will be focusing. It also provides a nice summary table of these schools as well as a short section dedicated to the GMAT exam. This is the perfect book if you need to narrow down or even just select the business schools in which you may be interested. It can be particularly useful in assuring you don't accidentally overlook a program for which you are well suited. The financial aid section is also pretty helpful. Beware that, if you are applying to a competitive business school, you will want to do additional research for your "Why I want to attend your business school" essay beyond what is covered in this book.

Barron's collectively assembles the information you are looking for in an easy-to-read format that makes the scary idea of going to business school a little less intimidating. The book breaks down each school, discussing the programs available, admissions info and general data regarding the campuses.

Boards From Hell: Maps for Getting Home from There
This book is a must read for volunteer board members and the staff who nurture them while trying to do their underpaid, undervalued jobs.

Boards from Hell is an easy read, reference manual that gives names to the dismay you're feeling when attempting to make your non-profit board productive and mission-driven. It also gives easy to follow, realistic steps to take to rescue faltering boards and put them back on the road to governance rather than abstinence or micro-management.

I use this book with struggling boards and with college students interested in "getting it right." In fact, this order represents my 60-something purchase of the book!

We have used this book as a trainiing manual for a leadership training program in our community. It is a no nonsense, easy to read book that helps anyone new to the board scene feel at ease. It provides tools to help board maintain their sanity and avoid burn out.

An IDEAL book for anyone needing help with the process!
This book will be a great asset to anyone feeling overwhelmed with the college search process (who isn't?). Given the amazing amount of literature out there, I felt relieved that someone took the time to find and identify the best resources for finding the right college. There is a TON of literature out there, and only about 1/3 of it is useful - this book makes sure that you're buying the right item (and consequently not throwing away money!). Easy to understand, complete, and encouraging!

Great resource for helping trainers organize and plan
Really enjoyed the analogies at the beginning of each section. The author definitely practices what she preaches.

A "must read" for novice trainers!
Before this book, I was at a loss as to how to effectively present training sessions on technical information. This excellent guide takes novice trainers step-by-step through the process. Handy fill-in worksheets at the end of each chapter provide a journal to use later. Each chapter begins with a guiding principle from one of Aesop's Fables that make the concepts easy to apply. I wish I had had this book years ago!

Corporate Universities
I found this book quite helpful to me in setting up a corporate university within my company. Meister's book was a great resource to see how the large companies have set up their universities. The general guidelines of "how to do it", gave me some insight as to how to go about setting one up for my company. Visiting the web sites of some of the 50 companies referenced, was also very helpful. A good resource/reference book.

Jeanne Meister hits the mark with Corporate Universities
Jeanne Meister's book on corporate universities is a review of the key success factors and motives in developing a high level corporate training organization. The majority of the information in the book is taken from Fortune 500 companies who are developing their own 'umbrella' learning organizations. The information was gathered through questionnaires, consulting, and trade shows held by Corporate University X-change, a company who publishing one of the leading industry magazines. The trend for corporate universities seems to be driven by two main factors:

1. Upper-management's need to build a flexible learning organization. A good example of this trend is illustrated in a Shell Oil study on changes in the firms appearing on the Fortune 500 list . This study showed that one-third of the companies listed on the Fortune 500 list in 1970 had vanished by 1983. In fact, the study estimated that the lifetime of the largest industrial firm was less than half the average lifetime of a person in an industrial society. The bright spot of this study was that those who survived 75 years or longer made a point of continually experimenting and exploring new businesses and creating new sources of growth.

2. Technologies that more effectively facilitate the collection and management of key information on the organizations intellectual capital.

I was impressed by the names and company references that this book contains. It appears as if the author has established relationships with these companies and makes the information seem more credible because it appears to be first hand and can be backed up by contacting the individual or company.

Designing Student Leadership Programs: Transforming the Leadership Potential of Youth

Authors: Mariam G. MacGregor and Mariam MacGregor
Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

Great Starter Book
Author Mariam MacGregor has laid this book out great for anyone wanting to start a youth leadership program. The material isn't new -- but the format is easy to read. I've worked with high school leadership groups for more than 12 years and this book reconfirmed some of my ideas about leadership. A couple of new activities about youth ethics were found as well. One of the best parts of this book is that it walks you through setting up a program. This is a GOOD BUY. Well worth the money.

A GREAT PLACE for youth leadership trainers to start!
I recommend "DSLP" extremely highly to any and all adults working with teens in a leadership context. I teach in a leadership development program for high school students. MacGregor includes here many activities, schema, and resources that are eminently useful to me and my faculty colleagues, as well as the apprenticing student leaders we work with. This volume is practical, current, and very user-friendly. I thus give it my most enthusiastic endorsement. Treat yourself to this invaluable asset!

A practical orientation about Distance Training
The book deserves the merit of showing diverse Instructional Theories frameworks applied to both Academic and Corporate environments. It becomes even more comprehensive at the point the case studies are shown, so it is easy to evaluate the applicability of all methodologies presented to a certain purpose.

Delving into the details of distance training and education.
This work explores the impact of organizational technology on distance training, presents conceptual frameworks in distance training and education, and discusses instructional design of distance training. Most of the book presents case studies in considerable detail. Three primary themes of the cases are: distributing information and increasing knowledge; building technical and critical thinking skills; and changing attitudes and enhancing motivation. A penetrating and technical treatment of the subject.
