A no-nonsense guide for training program development
An easy reading reference for training professionals. It breaks down into simple terms, the complex process of developing training.

The 1988 edition of this book was the course reference text in my college classes on "training development, implementation, and evaluation ". I am still working in the training industry, and refer the the book frequently.

Excellent Instructional Development Book
Mager has written an outstanding book for the beginner to intermediate trainer/curriculum developer. He addresses the skills and procedures necessary for designing instruction. The book is an enjoyable read, which guides you through each step of design, development, implementation and evaluation!

Mager - The Master of Simplicity and Common Sense
Dr. Robert F. Mager may be the master of understatement. When you read his precise recipe for creating successful instruction, you are left with the realization that your life could have been much simpler had you encountered this wisdom earlier in your existence. Dr. Mager is not recounting some brand new theory or blinding discovery. He is communicating a logical and systematic process for defining what instruction can do. In the process, he helps you determine if instruction is the solution for your performance problem. He shows you how to set goals, identify task objectives and task sequences, identify the skills and characteristics of the persons you are teaching, and develop and refine your instruction into an effective change agent.

Amazing section on speed reading
Found this 1990 book at the local library - though it does not deal with the internet at all, it is still an extremely useful book.

Talks about a variety of topics like power of positive thinking, reducing stress, improve concentratiion, how to relax your eyes & improve peripheral vision.

The section on speed reading is utterly amazing, well worth the price of the book - I've been able to more than double my reading speed, and am trying to learn "grokking" to grasp at the essence of an entire technical book in an hour!

Good paperwork skills without hypes or gimmicks!!!
This book really helped me organize how I handle paperwork, communications, and information gathering. It help me learn to read faster and improve my memory. This book is out of print but I highly recommended it. This isn't Super Learning telling stories etc. This book really is a how to book. If you're swamped in paperwork this will help greatly. The book is any easy read.

More than I had hoped to learn
This book is packed full of good useful information. By reading the book and doing the pertinent exercises I was able to improve many of my mental skills. I hadn't expected to get so much out of one book.

Statistical Analysis by Kachigan
This book has an excellent treatment of the various statistical methodologies. It has an easy-to-read treatment of basic probability with a gradual introduction into conditional prob. The coverage of mean, variance, weighted mean and the standard deviation is good. I was impressed with the explanation of the z statistic and hypothesis testing. The author had a good rendition of regression and correlation in single, as well as, multiple models. The style of this work is a belles lettres

treatment-almost akin to reading a story. Despite the simplicity, there is enough complexity for the quantitatively oriented readers. I would like to see an update of this book with some cross-referencing to the internet and more modern terminology. Despite the fact that it is an older work, there are few books which explain the material with the clarity of this text. Its weaknesses may be overcome by utilizing the REA Statistics or the Schaum's outline. This book is excellent for students who find math hard to comprehend. It serves all levels of students from the most advanced to the students requiring more time with the material.

Yo Baby, Sammy is Da' Hoochie Daddy
I just wish he would write a new book and focus it around SPSS. Although the book was published long ago, it is written to those struggling in their Multivariate classes. It is very clear and concise. I could have read this in high school and understood every word. The book is not focused on linear algebra or higher level mathematics. Instead, he provides a clear conceptual understanding of the major techniques. If you read this much, buy the book and read it. I guarentee that in no time you will be asking your prof questions that will boggle his or her mind and you will score you some brownie points. Further, after reading it you will love the subject and study stats naked. Even if you decide not to keep this as a desk reference, you can always sell it to another student and use the cash to buy some beer. After reading this review, I only ask that you write Dr. Sam and tell him to keep writing. Tell him that we will revoke his Visa if he doesn't. I love you SAM. Peace to the world. Long live Dallas, TX! This book helped me earn an A+ in advanced stats in the MBA that I am enrolled in.

Afraid of Statistics? This book is for you!
This volume is an excellent introduction for someone who needs a conceptual understanding of statistics without the rigor or depth of a specialist. The presention is very non-technical with each new subject carefully developed. Ideal for the general business or social science undergraduate or anyone needing a brief and relatively painless encounter with a vital subject.

1001 Math Review
Great for examples of practical math problems. Useful for the math solutions you forgot from high school and college!

1001 Math Problems (Skill Builders Practice)
I purchased this book to help prepare my son for his written test with the local fire department. The problems start off easy but progress rapidly in difficulty for each category. It has a multiple choice format that is easy to read and understand. The answers are provided with a brief explanation on how to solve the problem or why it is correct. The book comes in a nice size with space to work out the problems. Now my son is telling me he needs one for the spelling test!

Help for the Job Needy
As educators know, it can be difficult to put together a resume filled with all that goes into teaching: classroom, coaching, club advisor, education, licenses, etc. This book not only tells the career educator what to include, it helps weed out unnecessary information. With sections such as Production Guidelines, Tailoring Your Resume, and Resumes for International Teaching, this book is for the teacher seriously looking for a new position. It even has a section on Cover Letters.

Great resume book!
I really enjoyed this resume book. It helped me to get my first teaching job and I was even complimented on my resume by my employer. I really found the chapter on what gets left out helpful. It also gives you good action words and short phrases to use. Great for administrators too!

Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising: A Comprehensive Guide to Principles, Strategies, and Methods (The Jossey-Bass Nonprofit Sector Series)

Very good. Inspiring and practical guide for set up.
Rosso and Associates have created a book to inspire those who find themselves in a relatively undefined fundraising position. The book provides a conceptual framework from which to view fundraising as, aside from the mission, the most vital aspect of a not-for-profit organisation. You can approach this book from an absolute beginner level or from an experienced fundraising background looking for a little inspiration and back-up. The book is, understandably, quite grounded in American law and culture so its direct application to other countries is limited.

A must read for everyone involved in fund raising
The late Henry Rosso, one of fund raising's all time great teachers and practitioners, gets to the heart and soul of fund raising as he clearly presents the basic techniques. His love for philanthropy and his respect and admiration for donors is infectious.

Very creative !
Some activities were completely new to me, and some were games I have know forever -- but with a tickling twist! Although some results are difficult to analyze accurately without a Master in Psychology, the exercises allow players to learn something about themselves. Good buy.

Powerful Ideas
I've just purchased this book and am really impressed. Good to see so many quick yet powerful exercises in one book. Most of them I haven't seen before and that is refreshing. I am always on the look out for creative experiential resources and this book certainly fits the need.

How to Make it Big in the Seminar Business

It's OK, But...
This book is a good, though only partial, treatment of the subject of developing a seminar business from scratch. It's actually better at teaching you how to promote yourself as a trainer or seminar leader than it is at showing you how to build a business. It's "you can do it, too!" approach is empowering but woefully incomplete.

Seminar leadership is a viable business in itself, as well as a component of any subject matter expert's business. There is tremendous potential in establishing onself as an expert and selling that expertise though seminars, including "backroom sales" of books, videos, audiotapes, and related products. Seminar attendees, book readers, etc., are also a potential audience for private consulting assignments. The ability and drive to leverage one body of knowledge into multiple formats and venues is central to this book's purpose.

After reading the book and listening to the companion audiotapes (sold separately), I attended a two-day "Seminar Leaders University" hosted by the American Seminar Leaders Association (ASLA), founded by the author and subsequently sold by him. I hold their "Certified Seminar Leader" (CSL) designation. However, none of these three resources addressed the *economics* of the seminar business or prepared me for the business of the seminar business.

Beging with this book, and follow up with Howard Shenson's books, epecially "How to Develop and Promote Successful Seminars and Workshops: The Definitive Guide to Creating and Marketing Seminars, Workshops, Classes, and Conferences," for the dollars and cents of marketing, testing, and delivering successful seminars.

"How to Make it Big" should whet your appetite for more substantial fare to complement its enthusiasm and introduction to the subject.

GREAT!
This book will give you the perfect map for beginning your own seminar business whether you are experienced or not. It also has so many references and tools that it will be the only book necessary regarding this subject for you to have and keep. Thank you Paul!

Wonderful way to learn more about how to get started!
This book was really helpful to me. It contained information on everything from what to do with the initial idea of a seminar business, to how to write a great seminar brochure, to marketing techniques. Overall, I'd HIGHLY recommend it to others interested in making money in the seminar business.

Also, a good selling point is the listing of names, addresses, and numbers for people in the business, contacts, good seminar locations, etc. Very worthwhile investment!

For those interested in improving performing arts educatioan
For those interested in the current state of liberal arts and the performing arts among institutions of higher learning, this is a book worth adding to one's library. The section of the book dealing with the political and corporate influence on higher education during the post WWII period make intere4sting reading, although one may question the conclusions the author has drawn. The author is an excellent writer and has important things to say. The book, however, is highly derivative and thus it is difficult to separate his voice from all the quotes and references. Dr. Himes' views could provide an important contribution ti the refining and improvement of the Performing Arts curriculum of US colleges and universities. .

I sincerely like this book.
I sincerely like this book. I first picked it up mainly out of a curiosity over what was meant by the " massacre of genius." I discovered that the author defines genius as a special wisdom that we all have but because of the dominance of Western objectivism, it is rarely explored. The fact that the Dramatic Arts were used as the model for Hime's theories was also interesting. I have heard college and university theatre students complain about many of the very things he explains in this book. For example, the writer brings out the fact that university theatre needs to be a laboratory where students are told that their mistakes are merely a part of their growth and not a reflection on their ability and that the Dramatic Arts must become a course of study where students are led to discover the extent of their abilities and desire as well as receive a general education through, what he calls, "layered instruction." Because this kind of training is rarely, if ever, being done, the full intellectual and creative potential of the vast majority of students is being "massacred." What I found particularly interesting was the author's dual emphasis upon student and faculty self-discovery and interdisciplinary collaboration. I liked the way he used established scholars to substantiate his theories, which if he had not, much of the surprising information he has uncovered would be hard to believe. I am amazed at why it's so difficult for dedicated educators to put into effect student-centered programs. It was frustrating at first when I found that I had to read this book slowly, a little bit at a time, in order to digest the information. The author doesn't present his concepts in a simple fashion which makes this book a challenge to read. But, the author states that a paradigm is suppose to stimulate thought and not dictate solutions. And so, I had to form my own beliefs about what I was reading. It reminded me of the book, HOW WE THINK by John Dewey. In my opinion, the writer of THE JANUS PARADIGM has a similar enigmatic style and thought provoking outlook about the development of higher education since 1950 and where it's heading in the next century as Dewey did about the twentieth century. Dan Beutner, professional educator

This book kicks butt!!!
This book kicks butt! Finally somebody wrote a book who understands what students are going through. Dr. Himes writes about the things that too many professors are afraid to discuss. He even brings out that fact-- explains why, and offers solutions about how the faculty and administration can improvethe current situation and lack of understanding. This guy recognizes the fact that we are paying a lot more for our education and so deserve more attention and time from professors. We are not paying all this money to support their research-we want to learn directly from them and we want them to give us the time we are paying for instead of spending most of it on their own publications for advancement. There's a lot of real great ideas in this book that people who run colleges and work in them should pay attention to and even give them a try. I recommend this book to college students too! It's helped me realize what to look for in a class or professor and know more about what is right and wrong with how I am being given the grades that will affect my whole life. The book could be used as an awesome discussion focus between students and teachers. What's also cool, I thought, is that it's written like a reference book so I could read about I was interested in at the time and not have to read everything to get the important stuff. We need more books like this one.

A memorable schema for how people approach decisions
I enjoyed reading this a year ago, and recently bought a copy as a gift. I remembered it as a "light" read, but it's really fairly long. The authors give you a memorable perspective on how there are completely different ways of viewing decisions - appeal to consensus; appeal to facts; appeal to authority, etc. You may take that for grant, but the book really brings this perspective alive and points out that modern-world decision making requires more complex approaches that ever before.

Understanding the limitations on our thought processes
While this is not a book to be read for entertainment, it will certainly surprise and excite those who wish to better understand our every day decision making processes. I highly recommend it for those who need to think quickly and efficiently in business, or even for anyone who just wants to better understand their own decision making patterns for better or for worse. You'll need at least a couple of weeks to get through this one, and I would recommend reading it with a friend so you can discuss each chapter as you progress throuh the book.

Wicked problems are difficult to structure
This book examines the difficult task of formulating the structure of particularly complex, or wicked, problems. Wicked problems often do not have "right" or "wrong" solutions, and progress on one aspect of such a problem often leads to new problems on another aspect. By defining the multiple perspectives of stakeholders in these problem "messes", Mitroff and Linstone illustrate how one can begin to approach "solving" them in a reasonable fashion.
