The only complete book of business communication
I did enjoy every page of this book, although I haven't read all of them. It's more an encyclopedia, which you may use in your day-to-day business, than something you will read straight through over the weekend. Very valuable and up-to-date were the chapters about intercultural and e-mail communication. Strong recommendation.

Buisness Communication today
This is a fantastic book. It can be used for reference at home and at work. It helped me fine tune my job resume and also helps in communications between companies at work. Keep this book, you never know when you need a letter format or an outline for some other form of written communication.

Comprehensive and easy to understand
This book is really good to help me understand my course. It was well developed and accounted for basic skills needed for people to develop their skills. It was full of useful, colourful illustrations and easy to comprehend. The exercises were excellent and it did make me really able to detect my mistakes. The book would be helpful for future references (example: attending interviews, writing letters). I wouldn't even trade this book with another since I found it will help me to improve my skills in communicating and writing.

Full of It
This book is choc-full of useful techniques for good, solid business communication. The samples are well thought-out and are very true to life. However, the questions, especially the ethics questions do not have any answers provided. Even the instructor copy doesn't have any of the answers, so effectively it boils down to your opinions and whether or not you can defend them. Yee Hah, just like real life.

Wonderful reference book
I use this book for my primary text in a Business and Professional Communication class that I teach. The students like how the book is organized; I appreciate the examples that we can use in class for discussion.

Beyond that, the AIDA approach to business writing is clear and easy to use once students get the hang of it. My students' major project is to work with an organization in solving a communication problem, they are responsible for writing memos and reports to both the client and me.

However, I guess that the biggest endorsement is the number of students who do not resell this book at the end of the semester. I have had several tell me that this is one of the few books that they will take with them when they graduate because they view it as a good reference book.

it is a very good book for a beginning student of BBA OR MB
i am feeling difficulty to understand terminology(glossary required at the end of book) i think all the supported material like test bank or software must be attached with this book in form of CD(ROM)

The First National Bank of Dad: The Best Way to Teach Kids About Money

Good advice on how to teach kids a valuable lesson.
I read this book in one afternoon. It is a relatively quick and easy read. David Owen does a good job of supplying advice and a lesson in money management with a little humor. My son is 6 years old and I just started giving him an allowance so he can buy things and stop pestering me. It turns out that this is exactly what Mr. Owen recommends in his book.

This book was enjoyable and informative; I recommend it to anyone with young children.

A must-read for all parents, esp. middle class parents
I got a few books on how to teach kids money from the local library and settled on David Owen's book. Owen used his real life experience with his own children to get his messages acrossed. Some of the approached Owen used are really "out-of-the-box". He also offerred the lessons he learned from his experiments.

Owen's philosophy is sound, his approaches are sensible, and this book is easy to read and often funny. Highly recommmended.

Much More Than Just a "Bank Book"
David Owen's book should be must reading for all parents with children under age 12. In the first part of the book he describes the success he has had with his own children in establishing a "bank" for them that is both understandable and lucrative. Later he gives excellent advice on providing allowances for youngsters and what they might do with some of the cash including the risks of getting caught up in bubbles nearly as scary as the great internet dot.bomb or dot.con fiasco of 2000: namely, beanie babies. Valuable lessons for children.
Also, the simple language used to describe stocks and bonds could be very useful for young, inquiring minds. Almost surprisingly at the end he segues into the benefits of reading aloud for impressionable minds, and again makes good solid sense. In sum a great book for parents to own and read and even for grandparents to buy for them.

From Debate to Dialogue: Using the Understanding Process to Transform Our Conversations

Contains valuable ideas to improve communication.
This is a great book! Flick's analysis of the debate culture goes right to the heart of what's keeping us from really communicating with each other. Her suggestions for how to break away from debate to true understanding are effective and liberating.

"From Debate to Dialogue" showed me why so many discussions in meetings I have been to recently have been unfruitful. If I can get several more people in my department to read this book, I believe we could discover better solutions to the problems we are working on. And we could all get there in a much better frame of mind.

Contention and divisiveness seem to be on the increase these days, and it seems to me that Flick has developed a method to reduce them and to take a different path, both in everyday, personal communications and in technical or business discussions.

Have you ever listened to someone only to have them ultimately say to you that you weren't really listening? What was your response? Was it something like, "Sure, I was listening!" Well, what you have found is a book that gives you a recipe for developing some skills which most of us think we have mastered. Like fish in water, we don't see that what we are surrounded by is the "stuff" to which we have become accustomed. Like fish in water, we don't recognize its hold on us until we are taken out of it and asked to try something totally different. Like fish who are taken out of the water and placed on dry land, we usually gasp at the thought of trying something different for too long. Some of us don't get it and don't see the need to change. Like fish, we just want to be placed back in the water! Dr. Flick's assertion about the fact that we have become accustomed to the "Debate Culture" is right on target. She is also correct in her assertion that if we are going to "walk a mile in another's shoes" the only way to do it is to transform our conversations using what she has called the "Understanding Process". You must read the book and practice the skill to really experience how this process can impact professional and personal conversations. I have utilized the exercise she recommends in the book during a diversity exercise in an organizational setting. I started at this point because it was my observation that the group of people that I was working with had difficulty constructively discussing the topics of race and gender. I believe that before we can have healthy constructive discussion, we have to know how to carry on dialogue that allows us to embark upon the "diversity journey". The beautiful thing about the "Understanding Process" is that Dr. Flick isn't proposing that in the dialogue your objective is to change the other person's position, she is simply proposing that this is a method that you can use to begin to appreciate and value the other person's perspective. These skills are required for us to successfully challenge our assumptions in situations requiring dialogue with other human beings. Challenging our assumptions is fundamental to acquiring new knowledge and developing critical thinking skills. I have found that we can help others to begin to develop their ability to challenge their underlying assumptions utilizing critical debate. Combining this exercise with the "Understanding Process" is a recipe that strengthens the development of skills that allow for meaningful conversations. These conversations are critical to our ability to push past the awareness building "parlor games" we have become accustomed to in our pursuit of valuing diversity within organizations. Be warned! Some executives are prone to launch into difficult diversity conversations thinking they inherently have the skills Dr. Flick recommends. I have observed that the more anxious they are to "get to the issues", the less they are willing to recognize the water in which they are swimming and the harder it becomes to convince them to learn this new method. Appropriate sponsorship and positioning are important to successfully utilizing the "Understanding Process" as a first step in pursuing deeper levels of learning regarding diversity. Practicing the skill is also important. Because the "Debate Culture" is so entrenched, a plan to carry forth learnings is imperative to changing behavior. Thank you Dr. Flick!

Transform heated discussions into constructive dialogue
Dr. Flick has captured the essence of Debate Culture. More importantly, she offers a way to transform heated discussions into dialogues which expand knowledge, affirm relationships, and transform debate into hope. I have seen the Understanding Process in action with peers and clients and have never seen it fail to transform discussions for groups and individuals. The Understanding Process is disarmingly simple to understand, but requires focused attention and a degree of discipline to apply successfully. Anyone needing to engage in meaningful discourse would benefit from this timely book.

A book for those who never worked
I decided to buy this book after reading all the reviews. To tell you the truth, I expected some new good info that could be of help to those 'knocking the corporate doors'. What I got was a bunch of common knowledge 'tips' in big font. I learnt nothing from this book. Give me your e-mail and I'll send it to you for half the price.

is is really helpful??
this book is really great especially for graduates who have not given an interview as yet. It really boosts your confidence.

Excellent read in about 3 hours!
How Hard Are You Knocking is a great book if you don't have a lot of time and you want to get a head start before you start your job search. I had the opportunity to see the Author in person at a career seminar. He knows what he is talking about. He is a recruiter and does this stuff everyday. Great young speaker who understands what college is like. I would recommend this book to any college student.

an elegant little book - competition for Zagats at Christmas
This is a beautiful, little book, a wonderful corporate gift, different and distinctive. It is filled with perfect quotations for every occasion in business and personal life, and the illustrations are beautiful, as well. It is a pleasure to flip through, and a wonderful desk reference as it is organized by topic: "achievement" "adversity" "competition" "immortality" "risk" "war". High end clients or customers would welcome being thought of in such an elegant manner.

Great resource
I was quite surprised at how interesting and practical this book was. Many books on personal finance or job finding can be grueling to read and filled with more hype than useful tips. But Stacy Kravetz writes well, and she knows what she's talking about. She also has a pretty healthy perspective on jobs and finding jobs, which can provide hope for the underemployed college grad. If you're looking to organize your life in a sensible way, it's definitely worth skimming through once, but it can be a good reference guide as well.

Excellent book for college graduates
This book is very well written and organized. I will definately refer back to this book in the future. It had a lot of excellent ideas for the recent college graduate, covering everything from resumes to investing. I really liked how the book was full of basic information that everyone needs to know. It also listed sources where one can find more information though other books and the internet.

Could this really be the real world?
Corporate scandals, unemployment, terrorism, wars, could this be the real world? Graduates today are facing some of the toughest times in US history, this book helps readers get on track after school, even in the crazy world we live in now. The book is well written and has good advice to get a solid start in life. Another great book for the grad is Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life.

Common sense book
This book has a lot of common sense ideas, most easy to follow, when hiring a contractor. In some cases I could see that following all the advice might cause some contractors to run away and play with somebody who is not a pain in the ***, but the advice is to protect the homeowner and is written in such a way as to be easy to understand. The book lacks a summary of the ideas, which I condensed into 2 pages for our project

Learn about what could go wrong, and how to prevent it.
My highlighter got quite a workout during this easy to read book. Tells about disastrous contractor scenarios, and how they could have been avoided. Lots of matter of fact warnings about contracts, even gives a sample one. There is a very useful section on specifications. He stresses the importance of VERY specific specifications -- right down to how many layers of tar paper. I felt much more nervous after finishing the book because I realized the phenomenal number of decisions ahead of me, but once I started making my list with the help of the book, I felt like I had a handle on it. The list of things to specify could have been a little more complete, which is why a 4 instead of a 5 rating.

Very helpful book
I recently had a house built (I was a first-timer with little experience in construction) and found this a very useful little book. It reinforced the importance of being thorough in checking references and provided concrete information about how to develop a construction contract. I found it extremely useful in developing my Owner's Specifications that were the foundation for my bid request and later became part of the construction contract documents. Use a highlighter to highlight the recommendations as you read this book: the useful tips can get lost in the text, much of which is devoted to consumer horror stories.

Excellent Primer
Discussion groups are an invaluable tool in distance learning and this book is a really useful guide to planning, implementing and managing them. If you follow the steps she outlines, it's hard to see how you could go wrong. If you're doing discussion groups - get it!

I recomend to buy this book
If you are a e-teaching or you are in the e-learning business, you must buy and read this book. This book explain the e-teaching work, how to moderate a online class without lose the control, how to train and monitoring a e-moderator,... talk about the important things in the success of the work of a e-teacher/e-moderator. I found this book very informative, I recomend it!.

For more than distance education....
Although this book is aimed at those teaching/facilitating in a distance learning setting, Salmon's advice and approaches are sound and right on target. The last third of the ook, "resources for e-moderators," is terrific for many online facilitation settings beyond distance ed, especially distance teams/workgroups, communities of practice etc. Some may find them a bit conservative for more free-wheeling social spaces and virtual communities. But her advice rings very true to me.

I particularly enjoyed the case studies and examples sprinkled throughout the book. I found myself nodding, taking notes and putting stickies in the book - a sign that this is a book I can come back to and use again and again. I plan to reference it in my next online facilitation course!

Good but complicated
Some of the activities here were great but only a handful were easy to perform in an office setting with minimal setup. Great if you have a whole day to spend on a series of activities and preferably an outdoor setting, but in corporate teams with little space they could be a challenge.

Go, Go, Gorilla!
Feeding the Zircon Gorilla is but one of the most fun teambuilding games included in this book. Sam Sikes rides again as he shares with us more really creative, group, brain teasers! The fun part is - you simply cannot win as an individual, you must work as a team to succeed! The game props can be made with everyday, around the house kind of stuff - nothing else to buy.

Lots of ideas for team building & problem solving activities
This book is a must-have for any trainer. Sam Sikes takes a fun, creative approach to team building and problem solving activities. The activities presented run the gamut of activities from those requiring few props, to high challenge activities for ropes courses. There are activities that are adapatable for children's groups to adults. I have used a number of these activities in team building activities, and participants have always found the activities to be valuable -- and fun!
