Shaping Futures: Learning for Competence and Citizenship
Published in Hardcover by Avebury (August, 1998)
Author: Karen Evans
Amazon base price: $69.95
Collectible price: $136.15
Average review score:

Review of Shaping Futures
"This outstanding book is a refreshing change from so much half-aware writing about 'preparation for work' or 'preparation for life'. From her acute awareness of young adults' perspectives and prospects in the rapidly changing interplay between education and a life at work, Professor Evans brings us a clear message admirably written: that all learning today is continuous both in time and amidst the shifting variety of occupations. Professor Evans rejects outmoded notions of 'transition' from learning to work, especially during or immediately after post-compulsory enrolment in formal programmes. She rightly sees each stage of learning, each job-change, as a threshold of the next. No matter how occupationally involved, people are personally engaged in self-education, or in the miseducation inflicted by the failure of systems. This book is full of meat from the author's own researches and experience in Britain, in other European countries and North America; but it is also enriched by research partnerships across the continents. It opens our eyes to present actuality, but still more to the future already beckoning young adults personally and occupationally." Social Movements, Civil Society, and Radical Adult Education
Published in Hardcover by Bergin & Garvey (30 November, 2001)
Author: John D. Holst
Amazon base price: $69.95
Average review score:

What others are saying:
Endorsement From Peter Mayo Associate Professor, University of Malta:
John Holst helps bring the historical materialist tradition back into the reckoning in the literature on radical and transformative adult education. This inspiring book is a must for anyone interested in the area of adult education for social transformation as part of a larger and more comprehensive struggle for economic redistribution and social justice.

Endorsement From Tara J. Fenwick Associate Professor, University of Alberta:
Here is a bold and incisive argument, calling adult educators to account....Joining scholars like Allman and Youngman, Holst restores a robust vision of revolutionary praxis in a desperate world.

Endorsement From Mark Murphy, Ph.D. Lecturer in Education, University of Stirling, Scotland:
Those who espouse to be 'radical' adult educators need to get themselves a copy of John Holst's book. In a brave and unambiguous approach to civil society and social movements, Holst provides a compelling and lucid case for reasserting a Marxist socialist agenda for adult education.

Endorsement From Paula Allman author, Revolutionary Social Transformation:
Theoretically grounded in Marx, Gramsci, and Lenin, this is the book we've waited for and the book we need. The clear articulation of the relationship between social movements and civil society makes Holst's work absolutely essential reading for radical/critical educators.

Endorsement From Nelson Peery League of Revolutionaries for a New America:
This uncompromising, deeply theoretical, understandable polemic is needed for educators in classrooms, in unions, on the soap box or the internet.

Endorsement From Stephen Brookfield Distinguished Professor, University of St. Thomas, Minnesota:
Holst blends theoretical sophistication with activist momentum to argue for the enduring relevance of a socialist vision of adult education.

Endorsement From Kjell Rubenson, Ph.D. Professor of Adult Education, University of British Columbia:
A brilliant contribution to the radical tradition of adult education. Holst convincingly demonstrates how progressive adult education scholars have used the writings of Marx, Gramsci, and Freire in selective and problematic ways. The author provides a thoughtful and inspirational way of returning to the fundamental ideas of these thinkers.

Learn how to give an entertaining, and original speech.
Though Don Aslett is known mostly for his books on cleaning and organization, he has also written an excellent book on public speaking. I am a high school student, and speeches have always scared me. However, when I began to read Don Aslett's book, I decided that maybe speeches are not so bad after all. This book offers tips on preparing your speech, how to dress, and even ways to "recognize" important people in the audience you are addressing. There is also advice on speech length, adding humor to your speech, visual aids, handouts, and more. At the end of each chapter some questions are included to make sure you paid attention, and understood it. I believe however, that the most important things about the book is that it helps you relax and have fun preparing and presenting your speech. I recommend this book especially to nervous and not-so-nervous high schoolers. It will definitely help you with your speech.

Wonderful synthesis of classic and contemporary thought
A very thoughtful and detailed analysis of classic and contemporary economic theories and their effects on society. Weiss does a wonderful job weaving philosophy, anthropology, history, a little spattering of sociology - a bit of organic chemistry - and some speculative quantum physics in this his magnum opus. I say, Bravo!

A wonderful resource!
David Braverman's book is a great help in understanding how to finance a college education. It gives families the financial knowledge they need to plan and choose wisely for the future. This book cuts through all the confusion and is clear and easy to read. It's a wonderful guide and resource for all families investing in college.

An important book to read!
This book is a must read for the parents whose children will someday attend college. I wish I had had this book when my children were little. After reading it I gave it to my daughter and son-in-law who just had a baby. They agreed and learned so much about the different ways to save for your child's education. With the price of college rising, you can not afford not to read this book.
