Smart advice, no lawyer jokes.
When I was divorced last year and had to find a lawyer for the first time, this book saved me lots of frustration (and probably lots of time and money). It's very useful -- and it's even fun to read. The author's one smart guy. Everyone ought to have this book handy, because sometime, everyone has to hire a lawyer for something. Don't do it without this book.

Dr. King shares her wisdom
From soup to nuts...that is how Dr. King covers the process of counseling. In a delightful conversational style, she outlines both the art and the science of counseling. Her career as a counselor and counselor educator shines through the pages of this brief but potent work. I recommend it to counselor educators as a text for intro and practicum courses. Enjoy it!

Dependency theory dissected
This book focuses on dissecting the origins, development, and continued appeal of the dependency movement in Latin America, and its contagion of intellectuals in the US. With logic, the author begins to tear apart many widely held views by the movement's founders and drivers, which have absolutely no factual basis.

For all those interested in the history of economic development thoght, this book is very interesting and educational. For those interested in Brazil, I especially recommend it, as Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the former president, was one of the main founders of the movement. Of course, when he became a leader, he did ask that people "forget what he wrote" and adopted a strong economically orthodox stand.

Concise Reference for Managers and Marketers
This is a handy desk reference for marketing folks and the people who work with them. And a great value. Definitions are concise and well-written (but the trade-off is they are sometimes incomplete). Good coverage of trade terms (but marketing academics and researchers might want to look elsewhere).

The Distance Learning Funding $ourcebook : A Guide to Foundation, Corporate and Government Support for Telecommunications and the New Media

By far, the best funding $ourcebook ever!
This fourth edition of The Distance Learning Funding $ourcebook is an all-in-one comprehensive guide that covers funding sources, cable industry information, includes a section on intellectual property and distance learning, contains numerous Internet and multimedia resources, and a section on grantwriting. As a grantwriter that must identify the right funding source the first time around and use the most recent technology terms to write a competitive grant application, this book is a valuable tool. Arlene's expertise in the field of telecommunications shines throughout each chapter. Her indepth review of each distance learning funding source along with up-to-date contact information is critical for the grantseeker. This book was most helpful in helping me secure over $1,000,000 in U.S. Department of Commerce TIIAP (Telecommunications Information Infrastructire Assistance Program) grant funds for the Brooklyn College Library (NY) and Union County College (NJ). Arlene's section on TIIAP funding is clear and factual. Very little changes from year-to-year in federal grant competitions, so the 1998 and 1997 list of funded projects were instrumental in enabling me to create another winning program design for the 1999 TIAAP competition. The author has an insight in her specialized field that can be replicated by none. I would recommend this book to any grantseeker, both the novice and advanced grantwriter.

A scathing indictment of multiculturalism
Mr. Schlesinger is cogent and to the point. The best attack on multicultural agendas there is--from an intellectual giant. Short enough to be read in one sitting. Unfortunately, America's public schools and their hyper-ethnic curriculums will never catch on. Jesse Jackson only wishes that he could refute Schlesinger's wisdom.

A concise and challenging exploration of diversity
For several years I have been looking for a simple text to use with students to examine issues of diversity. This is it! Bucher presents in 7 short chapters an overview that includes a broad range of issues, balanced theory with practical application, useful and challenging activities. I plan to use this not only with my sociology students but also with human resource personnel who are trying to be more effective managers of diversity. Good work!

It's about time.
Leaders in higher education should stand up and applaud the efforts of these authors. This is an accurate appraisal of the IT landscape in higher education. Few have ever touched upon this 800 pound gorilla of a subject. These authors have challenged the misperceptions held by many about the real costs of technology. It's about time.

The Dyslexic Adult in a Non-dyslexic World
Published in Paperback by Whurr Pub Ltd (December, 2000)
Authors: Ellen Morgan and Cynthia Klein
Amazon base price: $33.95
Average review score:

From the parent of a dyslexic adult
It is refreshing to find a book devoted to the experiences of dyslexic adults, since much of the available literature focuses on children. The Dyslexic Adult in a non-dyslexic world was a welcome addition to my bookshelf. It is eminently readable and combines an 'academic' understanding of the issues with down-to-earth examples based on interviews with dyslexic adults. I particularly liked the fact that it gave a 'voice' to many people who have previously been ignored; namely, those adults whose dyslexia was not identified at school. Their stories, told through their own words, are well integrated into the various themes of the book. As the parent of an adult dyslexic son, I was able to identify my son's experiences with many of those described by the interviewees.

This book presents a realistic view of the problems and difficulties encountered by many dyslexic adults, but gives a balanced account by also exploring the many strengths which dyslexic adults may possess. It should appeal to a wide range of readers, including non-dyslexic members of the dyslexic adult's family, teachers, employers, friends and, perhaps most importantly, to dyslexic adults themselves.
