This book helped to clarify what has been called the "corporatization of education" that is taking place not only in higher education but in education in general. With corporations looking to education as a potential profit mine, the mission of education as a tool for a democratic society is being eroded. Shumar takes the concept of commodification and analyzes this trend throughout U.S. history with great detail. Although this book is pretty academic, and the postmodern terminology can turn some people off, this is a valuable resource for everyone looking to combat the corporate takeover of education and work to make it for what it should be intended for, a key tool for democracy.

David Speck's "Investment Prescriptions for a Healthy College Fund" is packed with sound advice--and not just for anxious parents and grandparents trying to plan for the college education of children and grandchildren--but for any investor seeking to reach a long-term goal.

For example, Mr. Speck's introductory advice to "buy good stuff and leave it alone" along with his admonition against gambling with one or two stocks, rather than investing in stock mutual funds (e.g. ". . . do not buy individual stocks until you are ready to invest enough money to create your own 'mutual fund' . . .) ring especially true in today's "Internet-Crazed" market.

His book is well written and offers excellent tools for calculating what one must do today to meet the objectives of tomorrow. Yet he manages to take this otherwise dull topic and lighten it with just enough humor to keep the reader's interest flowing.

If you are a "day trader" you probably will not appreciate the sound advice and assistance offered by Mr. Speck. But, then if you are a day trader you most likely are not interested in a college fund for your child or grandchild, and this book is not really written for you in the first place. In short, this is an excellent addition to the series of college planning guides from the publisher, Octameron. If you are neither day trader not concerned parent or grand parent, you may still find this book useful as an excellent primer and compact source on investing and many of the confusing terms found in the world of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.

This is an excellent get-started book for those who are discouraged about getting their home under control. I first read this book ten years ago when I was a newlywed, and it was a real encouragement to me. You will find creative ways to organize and get control of clutter; manage your time; kid-friendly chore ideas and age-appropriate chore charts; super ideas on how to save money; nutrition information and how to eat smart, etc. It has a fresh, creative, no-nonsense approach to making the most of your time, money, and resources. It's super for those of us who have not had a lot of practical training in good home management and great for those who have. I find it a great motivator every time I read it! It encourages you to roll up your sleeves and get started!

This book covers all of the basics for how to conduct oneself in the business world. Office politics, dining, and social functions are all addressed. The wardrobe section is very helpful, as well. It offers sound clothing advice for both men and women. The women's section is noteworthy in that it gives women the freedom to actually dress like a woman in the office. Too many books of this sort pigeonhole women into the traditional black hole of a dark suit, round earrings, and sensible pumps. The dining section gives advice on being proper, but not stuffy, at the table. There is also a useful glossary on hard-to-eat foods. This book offers useful and practical tips for the seasoned executive and the young up-and-comer, alike. I recommend it to anyone in the business world.

This Book is Excellent!

For reference, I've read dozens of books on presentation,

and with no doubt this is the best book I could find.

If you are in the market for a new small truck, this is a reference guide that you should have to make an intelligent choice before buying. Please note that the publisher, "IntelliChoice," is using the word "small" in comparison to a Mack or a Freightliner. In this guide you will find more than 500 pickups, vans, SUVs and wagons listed. The guide begins with more than 100 pages of very useful information that helps you understand the economics of buying and owning a vehicle, ie. insurance, finance cost, leasing, safety, tips on buying and more are covered. As you know, the purchase price is only one factor to consider before a purchase. Insurance, maintenance, repairs, depreciation, financing and fuel are also some of the costs that need to be considered. This wonderfully useful guide also gives you a black and white photo of each model, the dealer and list price, a unique "IntelliChoice" value code (Excellent to Poor), projected ownership cost per year, and much more information on each vehicle.

"IntelliChoice" guides retain their usefulness and value over the years if you decide later to purchase a used vehicle. I have guides that go back to 1993 and they are immensely valuable when buying a used vehicle for myself or a friend. I also plan to keep these guides with the hope that I will be around 20 or 30 years from now and I will have a guide that covers all the vehicles sold in America for a particular year. Wouldn't it be nice to have a guide today that shows you photos and evaluations of all the vehicles made and sold in 1969 or 1970? Some prospective buyers may baulk at the price, but when you consider that you will be spending between $15,000 to $30,000 for a new vehicle then the purchase price of this unique guide is only a minuscule .002% of your cost. Highly Recommended.

This is a great book for court reporters, scopists, proofreaders, anyone who needs help with grammar or punctuation. This book will teach you when to use a comma; semicolon; colon; capitalization; etc. This book helps with troublsome words like "legislator" or "legislature"; it helps with one word/two words; when to use a comma instead of a period after the answer "yes" or "no"; etc. This is an all around great book for anyone who uses punctuation or grammar in their everday life.

This is one of the best books I have read on this subject and I highly recommend it.

Although I already had the Creative Curriculum 3rd edition, I was compelled to buy this newer version, the 4th edition, when I heard there was new information. I was not disappointed. The Creative Curriculum is a guide for early childhood classrooms which addresses the environment and learning centers, as well as the role of the teacher. It is compatible with other known practices in early childhood, including the project approach, Reggio Emilia, and emergent curriculum. The book describes the setup and rationale for learning centers from Blocks to Library to outdoors. There are letters and information for parents, assessment and documentation sections. I can't say enough good things about this book!!

With qualified workers at a premium today, the author offers a solution. Business and education must integrate. Education should teach higher levels of thinking (e.g., paradoxical, systemic, futuristic) to provide business with innovative thinkers for the 21st century.

This book provides a comprehensive review of educational initiatives in S.Africa It draws from a variety of perspectives -postcolonial studies, sociology,history,political economy, studies in anti-racist education...it is striking because of its comprehensiveness. This is the work of an authority on education in sub-saharan africa. Strongly recommended!
