Getting a Job: A Study in Contacts and Careers
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (February, 1995)
Author: Mark Granovetter
Amazon base price: $15.00

The science of labor markets
This book is an interesting introduction to the workings of the labor market. The main theory revolves around the fact that contacts within our social circle usually do not have access to information we do not already have; in order to get new information, we need to extend social circles and reach for those with whom we do not have constant contact.

Through a very academic approach to the problem, the scientific approach is best to help us understand how people get jobs. I originally read this book as an undergraduate in a labor economics course, and I have recently consulted it again (10yrs later) and found many insights I had not caught the first time around.

how labor markets really work!
Mark Granovetter reveals how people make economic decisions and take economic actions based on the social structure they are embedded in. We are not totally rational beings as the old economists would have us believe -- we are social beings -- influenced by, and influencing those around us. It is how we vote, how we dress, how we think, what careers we pursue and what products we buy.

Yet, those immediately around us may not be very useful in helping us find a job! Our close associates know what we know at the same time we know it! Therefore, they are not very useful for telling us something new -- like where a job opening is. To find out about jobs, we don't already know about, we need to go outside of our immediate social circle to connect to people we don't see very often any more[old friends, college chums, old army buddies, former co-workers, old sorority sisters]. They now live in different social circles than we do. These social circles have information not available in our social circle -- some of the info is about job openings.

This classic book is still highly relevant and useful after 30 years! The book is somewhat 'academic' in parts, but is so full of 'gems' that it is worth slogging through the research numbers. Every college graduate should read this book and keep it handy till they retire.

Most Helpful College Finance Book I've Ever Read!
This book really covers it all - from financial aid to money management to real student experiences with paying for college and budgeting their time and money - it was the most well-written and accessible money-related book i've ever read. As I prepare for my freshman year, I'm now much less stressed about how to handle all of the money issues that come with college. Buy this book!

Great Tips & Budget Advice!
I thought this book would be mostly about financial aid, but it has so much more information that it's probably the most helpful money management book I've ever read. With quotes, essays, and interviews from students and recent graduates, this book is a great resource to make the right financial aid decisions, but also for dealing with all money matters including credit cards, budgets, and handling the stress of the college bill! I definitely recommend this book to any year college student! (I'm a sophomore.)

You may remember the definitions forever after listening.
The CD contains numerous definitions and a few basic concepts read aloud by a professional speaker.

I received this audio CD when I purchased the book 'PMP Exam Prep' by Rita Mulcahy and PM Fastrack (software). This audio CD is excellent in mastering the definitions and basic concepts from the 'Guide to the PMBOK' by PMI which is the official syllabus for the PMP. One of the main problems in passing the PMP is the situational questions that comprise a majority of the questions on the test. These questions seem very subjective but once you understand the definitions thoroughly, half the problem is solved.

That's where this audio CD comes in. After you have had a chance to read the 'PMP Exam Prep' by Rita Mulcahy, you can start listening to this audio CD whenever you have a few minutes. I played the 87 minute CD for about half an hour each night before going to bed. I have successfully used this technique in a lot of tests where you need to memorize definitions. If you play the CD about 2-3 times before taking the test, you should be able to recall the definitions very easily. If you play it a couple more times, I am guessing you will never forget the definitions.

The CD has a few basic project management concepts on top of the definitions. The voice is not that of Rita Mulcahy but of a professional speaker. The price seems a bit [high] and some people have preferred the book version of 'Hot Topics' for the value provided. I have personally reviewed another product, 'PMP Exam Challenge' by J. Leroy Ward in book form and liked it also. But the superiority of HEARING these definitions on an audio CD is hard to match in any book. This is because when you both HEAR and READ a concept or definition, it is more likely to permanently etch itself in your brain than otherwise. Of course, the strongest etching occurs when you use audio, video, book, and some form of interactivity in your learning.

If you get a chance, read my review on 'PMP Exam Prep' where I wrote about my PMP exam experience. You may find it helpful in preparing for the PMP exam. ... Rita Mulcahy is President & Founder of RMC Project Management that published this audio CD. The best of luck to you in passing the PMP exam!

Listen and learn
This 87 minute CD covers 650 hot topics in audio format in the same manner as the author's "Hot Topics: Flashcards for Passing the PMP Exam". It's a painless way to learn the key terms and their official definitions, which you will encounter on the PMP exam. If used in conjunction with the paper flashcards you'll have a powerful two-pronged approach to preparing for the exam. The terms and definitions are up-to-date and reflect the content of the PMBOK 2000 edition.

Helpful memory jogger for project managers on the move
I really liked the flashcard design - small, lightweight, spiral bound. Perfect for studying in the plane, train, or automobile (as long as you are not driving!).

I used this tool to help me prepare (and more importantly pass) the PMP exam. Rita's material was very helpful.

Fun and effective
This 643 page learning aid is simple to use and highly effective. It's in near pocket-size format, with an upper spiral binding to use as flip cards. On the face of each card is a term, and on the reverse is a definition. It's designed for you to use simple, effective memory drills to recognize key terms you will encounter on the PMP exam and the correct definition. The definitions are usually in bullet style and are consistent with the correct exam answers.

Key points: it reflects the PMBOK 2000 edition and also covers professional responsibility topics. You may want to also get the audio tape titled "Hot Topics: Audio Way to Get Ready for the PMP Exam" and use both as an extra effective learning strategy.

Illusions of Equality: Deaf Americans in School and Factory,1850-1950
Published in Hardcover by Gallaudet Univ Pr (January, 2002)
Author: Robert Buchanan
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Informative and engrossing
I found this book to be helpful as it provided much new information in areas that have not been fully explored in recent works. Buchanan showed that Deaf adults actively defended American Sign Language during the very decades (1900-1950) when "Oralism" was the official policy in most schools. He also shows that this tradition of self-activity extended into employment where Deaf adults worked individually and collectively to challenge discriminatory employers many decades before the Americans with Disabilities Act. Finally, Illusions is helpful as it provides an honest and empathic portrait of the Deaf Community that considers frailties and divisions as well as its extraordinary history of determined self-activity.

Filling the Gaps
Robert Buchanan's book 'Illusions of Equality' fills a gap long overlooked in activist literature. Meticulously researched and well written, Buchanan's book details the plight of deaf Americans in trying to find equal opportunity in employment during the heyday of American industrialization. With this book, Buchanan becomes one of the premier voices amongst activist/historians.

Influencing Public Attitudes: Strategies That Reduce the Media's Power

Everyone I work for or who works for me will have a copy...
As the Media Officer for III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan, I face the daily challenge of communicating with a community that is strongly influenced by media organizations distinctly biased against my organization.

Far from being "free press" as understood from the American perspective, the Japanese media operates in "press clubs" which control access and flow of information to a great extent. The two leading local print media organizations in Okinawa are directly linked the the Communist Party and have clearly stated that their editiorial objective is removal of US forces from Okinawa.

While the issue of the continued US presence in Japan is certainly worthy of debate and constant evaluation, my daily mission of providing accurate and timely information about the Marine Corps to various audiences brings me into constant contact with openly biased and often antagonistic media organizations. This book has become my most valuable reference resource when establishing effective plans to communicate with my audiences under these conditions.

It is concise, clear, easy to read, and perhaps most importantly, easily understood by senior leaders who rely on me for guidance but are not themselves Public Affairs specialists.

Influencing Public Attitudes
Write for one of the most brilliant public relations counselors, this book is a required reading for every person involved in Public Relations. Lukaszewski style, short and sweet, creates a perfect approach to the Realities and Myths in Communications Strategies.

Make College Count
This is a thoughtful, energetic companion to college. College is a huge investment. I absolutely recommend this to students, would-be students, and parents of students, to ensure they get their money's worth.

This is a "must read" for any college student
This book is a must read for any college student or college bound high school student. The book contains strategies and suggestions for success while in schoool that will lead to success in the world of work. The information presented will help students prioratize the activities and events of their college and university years that will ultimatly lead to higher grades, a more enriched experience in the University, and career success. Many researchers have documented a relationship between happiness on the "job" and happiness and contentment in life

Much of the information is what we assume all good parents will share with their children. However, my experience as a college professor and mentor to many students is that this information is not being passed on effectively. Even the best parents could not come up with all of these "pointers". Dr. Scheele shares her experiences with students she has encountered in her position in the career center of a large University.

This bok would make a great gift to the graduating senior or to any young adult looking for some common sense quidance to help launch them into the world of work. It will be on my list of "gifts for the graduate"
