Great primer on the US Economy
With all this talk lately about the condition the economy is in, I thought I'd do myself some good and actually read up a little bit on what the economy is actually all about - I'm in my 30's and it's been some years since those highschool economics classes.

I actually picked this up at my local library - but I liked it so much it's now on my Wish List.
The author takes a subject that's frankly not very exciting or clear to most, and puts it in words almost anyone can understand and states examples of how different concepts would work.

In this book I learned about such things as:

-The laws of Supply and Demand
-Different types of business organizations and what monopolies, oligopolies, and anti-trust laws are all about
-Labor unions and their effect on the workforce, and why some trades tend to make so much more than others due again to supply and demand
-What the gross domestic product is and how fiscal policies effect the economy
-Where the money for unemployment checks comes from and how the government determins what the unemployment rates are
-What causes inflation and why it's not necessarily a bad thing
-How the Federal Reserve System works and what banks do with my money after I make a deposit
-How internation trade effects the economy, and why buying foreign goods is actually good for the economy

Although this book doesn't cover everything there is to know about economics, it certainly is a great book for "US Economics in a Nutshell," and I feel I have a much better understanding of how the economy works now.

Reader's response to Demystifying Economics
DEMYSTIFYING ECONONOMICS takes a complex subject and makes it possible for both beginning students and older adults who have forgotten a lot from school days, to understand the basics of economics. The author has over 28 years of teaching experience and it shows. He is a writer who cares about students and the public, not just other economists. The careful reader will learn about the basic problem of economics, that is scarcity. Nations and citizens must choose because we have unlimited wants and limited resources. Readers will learn: the varied ways in which business firms are organized, labor economics, government policies designed to keep from boom and bust excesses, money and banking and international trade etc. The book also tells the story of how our national debt zoomed from 290.5 billion in 1960 to 5 trillion,711.4 billion (est) in 2000. This book belongs in libraries, as a companion text in schools and colleges and in the personal libraries of citizens who wish to make informed choices.

A tremendous resource for any training professional.
I have been in the training profession for about 15 years and have looked for a resource like this for a long time. As a training professional I have been asked to develop training materials for numerous learning styles and levels and have struggled to interpret what my customers are needing. This book details very simply what it takes to develop training materials and how to be an effective consultant in a timely manner. I found the concepts to be extremely effective and realistic and usable. I manage a training department of 8 trainers who have tremendous training responsibilities. Because this book is such an excellent resource I purchased it for each of my training consultants and they have used it many times over. I really appreciate the creative methods detailed by the authors in creating that "powerful" training program that our customers expect.

"Designing Powerful Training" will help you do exactly that
I have been designing and presenting workshops for many years but "Designing Powerful Training: The Sequential-Iterative Model" by Michael Milano and Diane Ullius is the most crisp, clear, and concise "how to" and "why" book that I've read on the subject. Theory and practice are consistently presented hand-in-hand. I particularly like the way Milano and Ullius honor all varieties of learning styles. They do this in the design process as well as in their explanations. The result is that I felt included as a colleague and as a co-learner. The book has actually motivated me to redouble my own commitment to design training events with the same sensitivity. But what I like most is the presentation of a process that is both sequential and iterative. To me that means a process that is both disciplined and flexible, invariant yet creative. The five point model helped me recommit to the importance of paying attention up-front to writing ! out complete goals and objectives. The authors do a great job of demonstrating why this is so essential. For me, the book functions like a disciplined and experienced teacher. The method demands discipline but within that discipline there is space for spontaneity and fun.

Great Resource for Directors in Classical Theater
Dramatic Events is an excellent resource for play directors and teachers of drama. Actors and playwrights will also find its insights useful. From easy-to-understand basics of how to read and speak Shakespearean verse to the more obscure requirements of working with masks and choral speaking, it is full of well-researched examples of how to solve the problems of classical texts. It is especially useful to American actors and directors, who typically do not receive as much training in the technical aspects of Shakespeare and Greek plays as acting students in Britain. It could be an excellent adjunct text for those teaching or studying advanced Linklaetter voice work.

A Great Resource
This books takes you through the author's experience step by step of running several forms of acting/drama workshops. It takes you from warm-up exercises through different performance goals. I found the book very helpful in developing my own improv/acting workshops.

Brilliant!
Peter Drucker has hit the nail on the head. This is strategic planning at its best, particularly for nonprofit organizations. The process is simple and concise, based on Drucker's 5 basic questions. The approach is comprehensive and inclusive. I recommend it to the leadership of any nonprofit organization.

Results-oriented approach to change management
I am struck by its simplicity and by the depth of its value. Seeking to change the old paradigms of a beloved, yet antiquated traditional organization, while at the same time fostering the public support of long-time stakeholders, is daunting. But this no-nonsense approach perpetuates joint problem solving and ownership. DISCOVERY of the real, not assumed, answers to five essential questions helps to level the playing field. I am recommending its use and am seeking support for sponsorship of the two day seminars.

Success or otherwise... You should read this!
"The educational and Occupational Attainment Process," which was written by Yukiko Inoue, is an experiment study of factors influencing status attainment in the United States. The purpose of this study is to define educational attainment and occupational attainment among adolescents. In addition, the author intended to find the process, which women attain their status in this research. This study did focus on women's status attainment as well as men's. Therefore, the author stated three interesting points, which are 1) women in American Higher Education, 2) the status attainment process between men and women, 3) impacts of marriage and children. The result of this study would apply to today's adolescents, because 1) the attainment process is found to be similar for men and women, 2) the importance of educational aspiration is still the determinant of educational attainment for American adolescents. This study makes its results so clear that American adolescents today can seek their way of attaining their status by reading this book. This study can be used for counseling adolescents, who are in the transition from high school to the occupational world. In addition, this study will help both schoolars and students in the different countries to compare own country to the U.S. I enjoyed reading this study a lot, because I have all my educational background in Japan, so it caught my attention in a great deal. It gave me a chance to get to know American adolescents, who are attaining their education and occupation. From my experience, I found out that the reason why educational attainment will guide students in the U.S. to occupational attainment is that American students tend to major, of which they can make use, for their occupation. That means that whatever they study in college will apply for jobs that they are interested in. This is a big differences between Japanese students and American students. People in the U.S. seem to enjoy their occupation and make full use of what they learned in college. I understood that people in the U.S. and Japan have different way of attaining their status. In the last, I was glad to have a chance to read this study, which made me think about the differences between American educational attainment system and Japanese educational attainment system. This book is highly recommended for those who want to succeed in the near future.

A look at the determinants of college and career attainment
What motivates young adults to go to college and to choose a career? This scholarly research study examines the multiple and interrelated variables which influence the educational and occupational aspirations of American high school seniors during the transition to college, their attainment levels in early adulthood, and the economic, psychological and social influences on educational attainment and early occupational attainment. The research involved surveying more than 2,100 high school seniors (Class of 1972) who responded five times between 1972 and 1986, from approximately age 18 to age 32. The complex multivariate methodology process analyzes the dynamics of the variables of: socioeconomic status, gender, ability, academic performance, significant others' influence (parents, teachers and peers), educational and occupational aspirations, marital status and number of children, and educational and occupational attainment.

The study finds that the level of educational attainment is determined, in order of significance, by: ability, academic performance, significant others' influence, and socioeconomic status. Further, the author posits that occupational attainment is a consequence, in order of magnitude, of: ability, academic performance, educational aspiration, socioeconomic status, occupational aspiration, sex, significant others' influence, and the number of children. In addition, the process of aspiration and attainment is consistent for men and women.

Includes five figures, eleven tables, an excellent bibliography and an index.

Recommended for teachers, school counselors, educational administrsators, school board members and parents.

A Calculus book that made me fall for Calculus
I have always wanted to gain a degree of mastery over the subject of Calculus, knowing the power and elegance of this topic of mathematics. I had searched in vain for a text that made the subject matter comprehensible, fearing no such beast existed. I stumbled onto this book virtually by accident and to my great surprise and delight, I found the text easy to read, with the subject material presented in a sequential manner that aided complete understanding. At no stage of the text did I suffer the pangs of not knowing where some pertinent information had arisen. Further, many of the examples in the book had a practical application of Calculus to the real world, making the subject even more rewarding to learn. In short, this Calculus Book has made the Calculus a pleasure to learn. My enduring and hearthelt thanks to MR. HOFFMANN and MR BRADLEY for their wonderful gift to me

Very useful
For those who need to see this course in college, this is the book to have. It's very explicit, and offers a very useful Algebra review at the end; extremely important to refresh our memory from highschool. Highly recommended!!

a good wager
In a provocative and well-thought-out, albeit short text, the authors, instead of condemning any act of a business to address environmental concerns as too narrow, choose instead to applaud it. The argument is that any move toward environmentalism is a good bet, basing this on the same concept used by 17th century philospher Blaise Pascal who wagered: "If God does not exist, one will lose nothing by believing in him, while if he does exist, one will lose everything by not believing." There's a particularly telling anecdote in the book involving Edgar Woolard, the former chairman of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., after he pronounced the business's commitment to zero pollution. Subsequent to the pronouncement an engineer told Woolard that there wasn't any way one of the plants could meet the new goal. So Woolard tells the engineer that the plant will have to close. Ironically, after the plant's engineers do come up with a solution, it turns out that it will ultimately save du Pont money. This book is a terrific exploration of how some businesses are discovering that environmentalism is not only a must for survival of society, but also for the future of business. Good, well analyzed stories and thinking here.

Thought Provoking Approach to Environmental Issues
Should corporations maximize profits OR preserve the environment? Is the cost of an environmentally sensitive business approach an expense OR an investment?

In this timely book, the authors build on the philosophical foundation of Pascal's Wager to advance what I will call Freeman's Wager:

"assume that it is reasonable to bet that there is in fact an environmental crisis. The consequences of being wrong are too great to bet otherwise."

The consequences of this wager for our children and future generations inform and lend urgency to the arguments advanced in this work.

Recognizing the ambiguity of "truth" in relation to the health of the environment and the contentious nature of public discourse on this topic, the authors advance four new environmental strategies for businesses: (1) light green, (2) market green, (3) stakeholder green, (4) dark green. Each of these strategies has its own logic and they do not represent a continuum requiring inevitable motion along a predetermined path.

Rather, these strategies represent options and the book advances a number of convincing arguments that a corporate value system that incorporates environmental considerations can actually lead to a competitive advantage.

This was an enjoyable and thought provoking tome and left me convinced that adopting a shade of green would be a competitive advantage to a company with a clear understanding of "what it stands for" and which embodies "values based capitalism." Such companies can maximize profits AND care for the environment. For these firms, environmentalism is an investment, not an expense.

I would ask the authors to further explore the implications of their thesis for average companies. They did not fully explicate the applicability of their argument to such firms.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever questioned how to live well today while preserving a good world for our children.

Vast Resource, but contact info out of date
They've done the research and list many scholorships in an uncluttered format. Scholarships are listed by the geographical location in which the scholarship is to be used. The contact information tends to be out of date, but it is possible to find the current information, albeit with a little work.

Interested in international education? Look no further!
Financial Resources for International Study is a must have for anyone wishing to attend school outside of the U.S. Every scholarship and financial aid option imaginable is listed within the book, which if you recieve one of those, could pay for the book itself easily!
