The best anthology since A Mencken Chestomathy
For paleolibertarians, the Ludwig von Mises Institute is the intellectual fountainhead. Included in this volume is what comes out of the fountainhead: a delightful spray of right-on critiques of statism. This book is useful to bring along on long trips when you have hours on planes or trains and need to keep your brain cells in use.

A terrific collection of statistics at a glance
This is a great book for people who need information about different countries. It has statistics on obscure information I couldn't find anywhere else. My only problem with this is that it was published in 1990, so the data is a little old now. Why hasn't the Economist published a new version?

The best single source for global statistical data
Few statistical compilations are as consistently useful and interesting as The Economist Pocket World in Figures. I have bought each annual edition since the early 1990s and count it as the single most useful reference source available to managers. The Pocket World is produced by the same group that publishes the weekly Economist magazine and expensive but invaluable country reports from the Economist Intelligence Unit. That lineage guarantees (as much as anything could) the timeliness and accuracy of data. The first part of the Pocket World lists 'world rankings' for over 170 countries using around 200 different measures. These include all the standard economic, population and financial measures as well as interesting comparisons on trade, quality of life measures, creativity and research indices and consumption data. A little cross-referencing produces useful and original information. Match (for example) per-capita book purchases (page 88) against computer ownership levels (page 86) and you can produce a linear regression that should be music to Amazon's heart!

The second part of the book has country profiles providing a two-page statistical breakdown for each of the world's 60 major economies. Spending some time comparing and contrasting the data gives the reader a greater depth of understanding about the factors that set nation's destinies. The sections on age distribution and birth rates, for example, clearly show the different national challenges raised for Japan (with the world's highest median age) and for many troubled African states where close to half the population is under fifteen.

For anyone interested in world affairs this is an essential book. It is an endlessly fascinating source of data and a reliable base from which to build an understanding of economic and demographic trends.

Terrific Introduction to Game Theory Experiments
I recently used this book in an introductory course in experimental methods in political science, taught at Columbia University. (I used the book in a seminar for juniors but it would also be appropriate for first year graduate students.) The book was recommended to me by a leading experimentalist in political science, and its easy to see why. It is filled with practical suggestions, on everything from recruiting subjects, to writing instructions, to analyzing data. It's many references to the literature (as well as sample syllabi) are very helpful. It is also short and readable, and reasonably priced. One caveat: if you are more interested in the psychology tradition to laboratory experiments, there are more appropriate books. Also, it does not deal with field experiments. But if you are interested in the game theoretic/economic tradition of laboratory experiments, it is hard to beat as a practical introduction. In short, a terrific book. Fifty Major Economists
Published in Digital by Routledge ()
Author: Steven Pressman
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Economics in context
Steven Pressman's book is the best place for anyone to start reading about economics. What you get here is neither the one-sided, smug, neoclassical viewpoint that most books on economics take nor one full of revolutionary fervour. Instead, this short book moves chronologically through the economic landscape, pausing to highlight the important economic thinkers, their lives and thoughts, and explaining both their lasting ideas and forgotten ones.

Free Market Reader: Essays in the Economics of Liberty

Interesting and timely anthology of free-market thought...
Lew Rockwell has compiled a fascinating collection of essays to add to the free-market apologia. Rockwell is the "dean" of the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Alabama, the fountainhead of paleolibertarianism. The Institute works to advance individual liberty and free-markets while promoting Judeo-Christian values.

This book, originally published in the late 1980's, contains a number of essays on a variety of issues from economists, scholars and free-market defenders. It features

luminaries of the Austrian school such as Mises, Reed, Rothbard, Skouson. Also, the paleolibertarian Congressman of Texas, Dr. Ron Paul offers his perspective in essays such as "The Coming World Bank" and "The Case for Free Trade." Moreover, Lew Rockwell, the editor, also offers some fresh perspectives.

Wide-ranging issues such as: banking, economic myths & fundamentals, fiat money vs. the gold standard, free trade vs. protectionism, privatization and socialism, etc. Plus a salute to the great economists of the Austrian school of economics.

Moreover, it seems this book has gone out-of-print. You might want to search for it on a used book search like half.com if you don't have any luck with Amazon's used book service. Though, I've seen it available every now and again.
