The Executive Temp: A Career Management Guide and On-The-job Handbook for the Temporary Manager
Published in Paperback by Random House Reference & (02 March, 1999)
Author: Diane L. Thrailkill
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $1.74
As corporations regularly eliminate scores of permanent full-time positions--but not the critical workplace responsibilities that go with them--more and more mid- to high-level jobs are being filled by temporary employees. With this trend likely to continue for the foreseeable future, consultant and long-time temp-by-choice Diane L. Thrailkill argues, why not roll with the punches and consider turning the situation to your advantage? Executive Temp is her helpful manual for anyone contemplating such a career track. Professionally and profitably fulfilling these jobs in company after company requires more than demonstrable talent in appropriate occupational areas, she writes; basic entrepreneurial and management skills, like those necessary in any small business, also are critical. Focusing on those relevant in this context, Thrailkill explains how to land the best assignments and negotiate the best rates through creation of a serious business plan and an organized approach to realize it. She discusses related fiscal matters, networking alliances, marketing programs, time management, and even specifics like medical insurance. After most chapters, she also provides a list of books with additional information, and concludes with an extensive overall appendix containing still more resources. --Howard Rothman

Pretty complete, from point of view of industry insider.
Pretty complete, except from a legislative standpoint. Wendy Perkins, the first published temp in America testified for temp benefits in her June 1993 testimony before the U.S. Senate Labor Committee. If you liked this book, you will love Temporarily Yours by Wendy Perkins, a temp/author-national activist.

First Home Buying Guide: How to Do It Right the First Time!
This book is an excellent first step to the home buying process. It gives a brief outline of the process that you must go through to purchase your first house. Though it lacks the true depth of information that is needed for true due dilligence for a purchase of this side, it gives you the eight steps that you must follow for a successful home purchase.

Good general information reference.
This treatment provides a good synopsis for various management issues faced by many of us on a daily basis. Obviously, it is difficult to be detailed on each and every aspect, as well! Tom Lambert does an excellent job of funneling out what's important and what's not! For those who need a more detailed treatment, this is not for you

Making Big Money in 1600: The Life and Times of Isma'Il Abu Taqiyya, Egyptian Merchant (Middle East Studies Beyond Dominant Paradigms)
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse University Press (May, 1998)
Author: Nelly Hanna
Amazon base price: $44.95
Used price: $23.81
Average review score:

Not entirely engaging, but informative
This book describes the life of a merchant (Abu Taqiyya) and some details about his family. You see how he traded, where he traveled, how he negotiated, etc. Also, you see how his family was affected by Abu's merchant lifestyle. It's informative cultural history. But, it's a little slow.

The details sometimes get a little too detailed. It's not a sweeping novel, by any means. This was written by a scholar, so expect to see more detail and analyzation than you would in say, a historical fiction novel.

The book does its job -- teaching you about merchant culture in 17th century middle east. It's just not a "fun" book compared to most.

Power Scheduling: The New Approach to Time Management
Published in Paperback by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (January, 1995)
Authors: Dave De Sousa and Dave De Sousa
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Power Scheduling
The book begins with a series of good quotes and anecdotal stories relating to time, use of tools, efficiency, etc.

The book continues its meandering around a series of concepts that do not come together until you reach Chapter Ten: "Making a Power Schedule." Here all the stories fall into place and everything begins to make sense.

Using the Power Schedule method, you learn to manage all aspects of your life around a planned set of actions instead of priorities. The Power Schedule provides a way to take care of all your roles and goals, minimizes fires, and allows "interruptions" to occur without losing the effectiveness of the schedule. This flexibility makes Power Scheduling an advance over left-brain, linear 'time management.'

This book will be of benefit to anyone who is NOT a type A person, as it appeals to a right brain approach to planning.

Review of a great help book
This is an excellent window to be aware of the importance of integrating purchasing strategies with various business tools such as TQM, JIT, MRP.The author critically analyses trends of management focus and gives suggestions to purchasing personnel to re-allign and improve their performance measures of cost, quality and delivery. As a practising purchase manager, I have been greatly benefited in provoking the thought process of my department personnel to constantly innovate and improve their effectiveness. I have recomended a copy of this book to all libraries of our 17 group companies. I would be delighted if the author and the publishers come out with material on using "change management" by purchase professionals to use tools of ERP and e-commerce and "adjust their sails" to ride the new cutting edge technologies.

Quality Is Still Free: Making Quality Certain In Uncertain Times

Business life story under misleading title
Some people who read 'Quality Is Free' observed that the title is somewhat misleading (because it oversimplifies the real message). This book's title is definitely misleading, because it suggests that the book is an update to "Quality Is Free'. This, however, is not at all the case - this book does not have anything to do with "QIF", except the author and his general attitude towards quality (which is quite convincing, however).

"Still Free" is just an account of Crosby's career from his earliest work experiences, through ITT to his own quality consulting firm. The focus, however, is almost always on quality philosophy and implementation, rather than personal matters - they are touched on only to illustrate the professional aspects. Generally, it is a good account but I doubt that this is a reasonable form of explaining author's quality philosophy because it's intrinsically simple and intuitive; as far as can be seen from the book, it has not evolved much over years of its application by the author. This being the case, it is not worth explaining in this particular form.

The book would be more valuable if it were written before "Quality Is Free", not after. Maybe they should be read in this order; doing it the other way round does not seem to be very useful.

An advantage of this book over "QIF" is its language: much more clear and readable. All in all, it may be worth reading if you only want to get a general idea of Crosby's quality concept. If you need a program for actions, better read "QIF".

Quantitative Methods for Portfolio Analysis: Mtv Model Approach (Theory and Decision Library. Series B: Mathematical and Statistical methodS, Vol 23)

The MTV approach to Portfolio Construction
This book provides practical details for applying quantitative techniques in building portfolios to maximize expected utility. In paricular, Kariya proposes use of his MTV (multivariate time series variance component) model for forecasting returns and risks. Essentially multivariate financial time series are decomposed into simpler principal components, which in turn are are analyzed as ARMA or GARCH models etc. (Compare with the work of Carol Alexander 1996.) This methodology is exemplified in the Japanese markets. Overall a systematic and disciplined approach to quantitative portfolio construction.
